You know this is badass list when you kick it off with one of my favorites on the console, Ehrgeiz! The final 2 games mentioned are easily the strongest ones for the PS1 as well. Awesome list man! Now I want to fire up some Ehrgeiz again lol.
One of the greatest 2D fighting ever made, the Samurai Spirit 4 was also ported to PS1. But that game is as elusive as it goes. And a shell of what it's supposed to be.
It's nice to see EHRGEIZ on this list, i feel like it's very underrated, and the RPG mode is surprisingly fun! JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is probably my favourite fighting game on the console, with a surprising second being Gundam Battle Assault 2, or Bloody Roar 2, although i haven't played much of the latter outside of a demon.
I love how fighting games used to be all unique in their own way with originality and mechanics. It leaves great imaginations, style and never afraid to experiment. These days devs make fighting games feel more the same. I really miss those days.
@@DarkOverlord96Yup, the OP sounds like they must have dropped off of fighting games long ago if they feel this way about current fighting games because creating your own unique combos and ways of winning is exactly what newer fighting games do, more than ever before even!
I collect fighting games, I currently own every big hitter and the most unique fighting games made including every single game on this list. Fighting games hit a pretty low point during the ps3/wii/Xbox 360 gen which im assuming this is what you're basing this opinion off of. Current fighting games are not only friendlier than ever before for newcomers with many notoriously difficult games becoming easier for newcomers, they also allow the most creative freedom in terms of combos than ever before. The fact that this is one of the most liked comments makes me sad that most seem to be lost in the nostalgia of older fighting games but never actually kept up with them to see that they are better than ever.
@@joeyisabsb1 I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I didn’t say that modern fighting games are trash or didn’t get better . A lot of the news ones are good. What I am pointing out is that it not too many of them doesn’t do much or anything new to stand out because developers are afraid to make it original. It’s not nostalgia that makes me say this and I think fighting games is bigger more than ever. I’m pointing out how different it is compared to now. During the Xbox 360/ PlayStation 3 and Wii, fighting games was on the high because of Street fighter IV. That’s why a lot of popular ones got franchises like Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, Tekken, and etc revived because of it.

Even MegaMan Legends 3 for cancelled.
Kensei is super underrated. Also Tobal. Their grapple/reversal system is way more developed than Tekken's or Virtua Fighter's. I do wish Konami never cancelled Fighting Bujitsu for arcade though. That looked like a serious 3D fighter contender. Also Fighting Layer and Battle Tryst never got ported and SNK lost all the source code for Buriki One and both Samurai Shodown 64 games... There's also Taito's Fighters Impact for arcade/PS1 which was very good and Atlus Yusha: Heaven's Gate which I liked (and it had unlockable guest character Kurara from the Power Instinct fighting game series.) and Critical Blow. Star Gladiator by Capcom was also good. Fun fact: it originally was supposed to be a Star Wars fighting game, but Lucasarts pulled the plug and made their own, so Capcom took the remaining assets and reworked it into their own fighting game. That's why the main guy uses a lightsaber, the end boss looks like Darth Vader, and there's a character that looks like a Wookie 😅
Ehrgeiz is an amazing hidden gem on the PS1. So cool to be able to play as a many of the iconic FF7 characters in full-blown 3D where you had full control over them as opposed to the turn-based combat of their own game. Just a shame that they completely overshadowed all the original characters, because while some of them are unique and interesting like the yo-yo cop girl (have you seen that movie btw?) they don't even compare to the likes of Cloud, Sephy, Vincent, Tifa, and Yuffie.
I think that game got a lot of heat thrown it's way because people didn't like the unorthodox design of the mechanics. Like I remember people complaining about its running system but ultimately that meant they didn't know how to properly play it. You're not supposed to just let your character run around willy nilly like that. You hold down the shoulder button while playing and then release if need be to run out of the way of attacks. Also, like Tobal 2, it has Just-Frame attacks which isn't something normally used in fighting games much, so it has a difficulty curve in mastering. It's interesting how it was rejected because of its 3D movement. When you think of it, it's almost like one of the main precursors to arena fighters besides Destrega, Bushido Blade, and Thrill Kill. And most people in the FGC do not like arena fighters. I mean just look at Tekken: they tried to evolve it a bit with Tekken 4, and that got rejected so they referred back to simpler 3D movement with Tekken 5 and on through to 8. Now you just see players moving awkwardly using Korean back dash which makes the game look glitchy. Or some players don't even use the 3D movement at all, making it basically a 2.5D game (3D character models moving on a 2D plane which is basically what Street Fighter and Guilty Gear are now). When you think of it, PS2's Urban Reign by Namco would be what Tekken would have evolved to if they didn't abandon developing and evolving the 3D movement.
I gotta add Tobal No. 1 to this list. Runs at a silky smooth framerate, character design by Akira Toriyama, full 3D movement, music is some of the best on PlayStation, dungeon-like quest mode to play through.... It's just one of the best fighting games on PS1
This list is crazy and ironic becase I have Rival School, Evil Zone, Tekken and Battle Arena and still those games to this day. Along with the dreamcast and N64. My cousin and I retro game occasionally with these classic, and rivalry is still there since we was kids! This video gave me goosebumps.
Yeah oddly enough, Namco of all companies published it for arcade first and the Final Fantasy characters in the original arcade version were Cloud, Sephiroth and Tifa, and they were time released within the internal clock of the arcade cabinet, much like how Tekken 2 arcade version did that as well (can't remember if Tekken 3 arcade did that too). When Ergheiz got ported to the PS1, Squaresoft published it then they added Luffy and Vincent. The game was developed by Dreamfactory who had also made Tobal #1 (which had come with a Final Fantasy VII demo disc with it in 1996) and it's sequel Tobal 2 which only got released in Japan (dumb mistake imo), and Dreamfactory was headed by Seichi Ishii, who was the designer for the first Virtua Fighter game and director of the first Tekken game. That's why Tobal and Ergheiz share a lot of DNA with Tekken and VF
Cool some great fighting games here that i agree are still worth playing today. Many of them i have still yet to play myself but will definitely try them. My bro owned Rival Schools & yea a very cool game & i also played Bushido Blade & Bloody Roar 2, both are epic, Tekken 3 is just a masterpiece & my favourite in the series. Great video.
I actually wasn't expecting to see any games I didn't know. But I had no idea about the Fatal Fury game. It's not the first time removed the 3rd lane though, as the super nintendo was the first to do that due to hardware limitations. Great video!
That bastard end boss would try to get a last hit on you after you defeat him 😂 He also didn't mention how the game has a Street Fighter 3 parry like attack to it
Evil Zone has to be in the top 10 most underrated for PS1. Seriously excellent game with a ton of personality and replay value. When you get down to a sliver of health you become ultra powerful, making matches really uncertain right up to the finish. Used to love being almost defeated and then wrecking their whole life bar on a sudden comeback.
The port of Street Fighter Alpha 3 I remember was pretty good with just a few compromises compared to the superior Saturn version. I think by the time Capcom got to Alpha/Zero 3, they started to get much better at porting 2d fighting games on the PS1 with its limited memory. I remember how happy I was when this was released because I must have spent a small fortune in quarters at the arcades playing this one.
Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Evolution, Rage Racer, Tokyo Highway Racer and Ray Tracers are hard to get back into, but R4 Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo 2, Option still hold up. Also Silent Bomber, Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman, Tenchu and Trap Gunner for 3D action games as well. Certainly the older Resident Evil 1 & 2 games, Galarians, T.R.A.G., Vampire Hunter D, Countdown Vampires, Overblood 2, get a mixed response now due to newer games not liking tank controls. Actually I don't think Countdown Vampires was ever liked 😂
I was always interested in Ehrgeiz because of the FF7 characters, though I never played it myself. I remember playing Rival Schools at a friend's house when I was a kid. I sucked at it but I liked it! Batsu is definitely a cool character. I recently got Evil Zone for my collection as well! It's pretty fun! I remember playing through Inuyasha so many times to get all the characters!! My friend and I really liked it and it was the first game where Is aw the character Koga and he became my favorite. Always fun to watch what games you pick to talk about! Thanks again for the content!
All those games I got on my Raspberry Pi which I remember buying for about $50 five or so years ago. Now I look it up and they go for damn near $300 wtf happened lol
Soul Blade is my number 1, that game was so ahead of its time, so many innovative features, including RPG elements, not to mention the colorful graphics and memorable soundtrack, but Tekken 3, Bushido Blade and Street Fighter Alpha 3 are all top notch games. Guilty Gear, Darkstalkers 3 and King of Fighters 98 deserve at least a mention. One of the greatest consoles and eras for fighting games.
@@eljugadorescaldenc4002 I have Soul Caliber 2 HD Online too (cause it's got Spawn also you can unlock a legend of Valkyrie outfit for Cassandra though it takes a while) So yeah Soul Blade, Star Gladiator, and of plenty of Battle Arena Toshinden. Though I do like how Battle Arena Toshinden URA for Saturn looks on my Trinitron. Toshinden always did get respect for having first 3D fighting game with actual 3D movement,, even though it was limited to just a dodge roll evade.
There should be some honorable mentions: Street Fighter EX2 Plus and Double Dragon. DD is such a cool game, I have bought the disc a few years ago. I remember pumping a shit ton of quarters on that game when I was a kid. Even now, I currently play it on my Miyoo Mini.
I got Dominated Mind on my Pi4 along with Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition (NEVER give up game over screen when fighting Geese at the end will be forever etched into my brain lol 😢)
Rival Schools is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. I lost it when Akira made into Street Fighter V. I need more RS characters in SF6! Also, I find it criminal that Soul Edge/Blade was not on the list. That opening and song is the goat.
MK Trilogy is still one of the best MK games ever made. It was the reason why I wanted a PS1 because I would always drop coins on the arcade machine near my place.
Yea, I can't believe that didn't pop in my head first. It has one of the best opening movies of all time and the graphics were almost unmatched at the time.
Kensei scared fist, dragon ball gt final bout, xmen mutant academy, street fighter ex 2 plus, wwf smackdown(bit of a stretch) Kensei has excellent atmosphere and soundtrack, final bout is broken fun with cool secrets, xmen is for combo nerds, sfex2p is EXCELlent for tryhards, wwf is saturday night fun with a buddy. But my top pick would be KOF98.
Fighting is the best genre on the console and it's really never mentioned. Too many people claimed Saturn to be superior in the genre because of the 2d port comparisons, but Saturn did not have Tobal, Tekken, SF EX, Soul Blade, Star Gladiator, Rival Schools, etc etc etc
I also prefer ps1 over Saturn because the games I like more on only on ps1. That being said, if I were to give an unbiased opinion and not a personal one, its the Sega Saturn.
Rival School was Capcom's early attempt into 3D fighting games as the time VR Fighter and Tekken series were taking grounds. Also the first time Sakura ever showed up in Street Fighter series so it's part of the street fighter universe we need this IP remade.
Ehrgetz and Bushido Blade are ones of my favorite games of all times. And I am not a fan of the PSX. Their first 3D games were horrible but Ehrgetz and Bushido Blade brought so many creative ideas in the way it uses 3D.
Yeah Asukac120% Burning Festival Limited and Asuka 120% Excellent: Burning Fest. Excellent (not of a redundant title there 😂) Ever played Advanced V.G 2 for PS1?
And this past month of December sold my copy of Rival Schools for almost 300 bucks here in México, already have a backup of this game at my PS3 as well on my PS Vita, with that money AM gonna purchase some games for My daughter, she wants a couple of them for the Switch 😅
On Switch, get her Angel Eyes and Breakers Also Mazinger Z shoot em up is on there which surprised the hell out of me. Though it is double the cost of the other ACA ports (it's $15 not the usual $8)

Yup, RBS: Dominated Mind ^^ Love it! I still prefer the NeoGeo original, but the PS1 version is my favorite fighting game on the system.
That bastard end boss would try to get a last hit on you after you defeat him 😂
He also didn't mention how the game has a Street Fighter 3 parry like attack to it
Evil Zone has to be in the top 10 most underrated for PS1. Seriously excellent game with a ton of personality and replay value. When you get down to a sliver of health you become ultra powerful, making matches really uncertain right up to the finish. Used to love being almost defeated and then wrecking their whole life bar on a sudden comeback.
Same, I loved this game and still love it.
I actually started a mini tournament at my Troop's Boy Scout Christmas party probably in 2011 iirc.
@@haloslayer255 Nice! I bet that was a blast. I need to play it again, it's been years for me.
It also had connection to the Sony Pocketstation (at least the JPN version I had did) so you could play on the go like Tamogotchi.
Thankyou Now I have to play Erhgeiz.
Bloody Roar deserves a game but with more characters representing new and different weapons from different regions
Just starting the video and I'm here to say I'm absolutely here to see some love shown for Rival Schools
I find that fighting games along with RPGs and racing games hold up better than most other types of early 3D games.
Your videos are relaxing, love it
Evil Zone is my favorite fighting game on ps1, Soul Blade was so fun too back in the day
Tekken 3 starting my fighting game journey, and I replace it all the time to this day
Your videos so crispy making PS1 games look like PS5 🤣
I wanna play each one right now💯
I freaking love this youtube channel.
good and informative. not just a montage of random gameplay. thank you for this great vid
Bloody Roar 2 was my fave. I still play it.
Does Armored Core count?
Soul Blade is my number 1, that game was so ahead of its time, so many innovative features, including RPG elements, not to mention the colorful graphics and memorable soundtrack, but Tekken 3, Bushido Blade and Street Fighter Alpha 3 are all top notch games.
Guilty Gear, Darkstalkers 3 and King of Fighters 98 deserve at least a mention.
One of the greatest consoles and eras for fighting games.
I am simple man. I see Evil Zone, I push like. The ost in that game is god tier.
The practice mode background music.... 🎵 🎶 🔥
Awesome video man. Great work.
Played most those games. Love them. Especially Blood Roar and Eretzvaju. But You left a few really good ones out. Like Soul Edge and Psycho Force
Man, I miss Bloody Roar.
Same here!
Tekken 3, kof98, rival schools, sf alpha 3, tenshoden 3 my fav ps1 fighting games
Interesting list, some obscure entries, never even heard of Evil Zone and InuYasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale.
I'm so glad Bushido Blade was mentioned, excellent game and pretty realistic for a fighting game. Tekken will always be the best though
Dude, Tekken 2's opening theme was perfect for this intro.
I'm glad to see Toshinden 3 here. You cannot imagine how many afternoons I played with my friends in that time.
Toshinden 3 didn't get a lot of love back in the day. It got overshadowed by Soul Blade and even Star Gladiator.
@@budgiecat9039 Totally agree by the way we spend a lot of time playing Star Gladiator and Soul Blade back in the day.
@@eljugadorescaldenc4002 I have Soul Caliber 2 HD Online too (cause it's got Spawn also you can unlock a legend of Valkyrie outfit for Cassandra though it takes a while)
So yeah Soul Blade, Star Gladiator, and of plenty of Battle Arena Toshinden.
Though I do like how Battle Arena Toshinden URA for Saturn looks on my Trinitron.
Toshinden always did get respect for having first 3D fighting game with actual 3D movement,, even though it was limited to just a dodge roll evade.
Tekken 3 scars are badges of honor. Nothing hits that spot like Tekken 3 and Tekken 5 . But all are nice and have a special place in my heart .
I learned alot today. We need some of these remastered.
There should be some honorable mentions: Street Fighter EX2 Plus and Double Dragon. DD is such a cool game, I have bought the disc a few years ago. I remember pumping a shit ton of quarters on that game when I was a kid. Even now, I currently play it on my Miyoo Mini.
There's a part 2 coming
EVIL ZONE,FATAL FURY,BLOODY ROAR 2 n 3 are my favorite cant stop playing them...
I got Dominated Mind on my Pi4 along with Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition (NEVER give up game over screen when fighting Geese at the end will be forever etched into my brain lol 😢)
Cool to see Dominated Mind get some attention. Such a great version of Real Bout.
Rival Schools is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. I lost it when Akira made into Street Fighter V. I need more RS characters in SF6! Also, I find it criminal that Soul Edge/Blade was not on the list. That opening and song is the goat.
Happy new year! Glad to see your content continuing 🎉
Happy new year to you too!
MK Trilogy is still one of the best MK games ever made. It was the reason why I wanted a PS1 because I would always drop coins on the arcade machine near my place.
Mine was soulblade, hands down
Yea, I can't believe that didn't pop in my head first. It has one of the best opening movies of all time and the graphics were almost unmatched at the time.
Best Kos 😂😂😂
I pretty much have every game in this list
what about Soul Blade/Edge ?
Tekken 3 is a miracle of optimization. Great graphics with great framerate. It it eats the cake and still keeps it.
Do you wear a retainer?
Kensei scared fist, dragon ball gt final bout, xmen mutant academy, street fighter ex 2 plus, wwf smackdown(bit of a stretch)
Kensei has excellent atmosphere and soundtrack, final bout is broken fun with cool secrets, xmen is for combo nerds, sfex2p is EXCELlent for tryhards, wwf is saturday night fun with a buddy.
Don’t forget Street Fighter EX2 and Critical Blow along with MK Trilogy and Soul Edge
Tekken 3 and Bloody Roar 2...
Yeah these were awesome
Rival School was Capcom's early attempt into 3D fighting games as the time VR Fighter and Tekken series were taking grounds. Also the first time Sakura ever showed up in Street Fighter series so it's part of the street fighter universe we need this IP remade.
Ehrgetz and Bushido Blade are ones of my favorite games of all times. And I am not a fan of the PSX. Their first 3D games were horrible but Ehrgetz and Bushido Blade brought so many creative ideas in the way it uses 3D.
Great one, as always!
I was searching of the name of Rival Schools for a long time, thank you! I was playing this in Atari places when I was child 😊
Glad the video helped out!
That part of the intro movie with Nina!
Gundam Battle Assault 2 is underrated
It is....
But Wing Gundam on SNES was better
Gotta try Inuyasha! I would add to the list asuka 120% final...that game is a lot of fun!
Yeah Asukac120% Burning Festival Limited and Asuka 120% Excellent: Burning Fest. Excellent (not of a redundant title there 😂)
Ever played Advanced V.G 2 for PS1?
Grew up playing these games and still a huge fighting game fan 🤘wish they would revive Bloody Roar.
EHRGEIZ did in fact inspired "Dissidia Final Fantasy" on the PSP.
Kensei: Sacred Fist was pretty solid, imho.
No Soul Blade? The intro song and video was reason alone to buy the game.
wow I didnñt know about that fatal fury game, I want to play it!
Nice to see Alpha 3 on this list. My all time favorite game. There's Street Fighter and every other game that wants to be Street Fighter 😊
Honestly Breaker's Revenge, Fatal Fury Dominated Mind, KoF, gave SF a run for its money quality wise. Also Power Instinct series.
street fighter. tekken. bloody roar. soul edge. and rival school
Very interesting list but the absence of Soul Blade makes my heart bleed :')
Nice Psx fighting games list Bro. This is a great Psx reference ❤❤❤
I hope capcom will make a new Rival schools game or a reboot
And this past month of December sold my copy of Rival Schools for almost 300 bucks here in México, already have a backup of this game at my PS3 as well on my PS Vita, with that money AM gonna purchase some games for My daughter, she wants a couple of them for the Switch 😅
On Switch, get her Angel Eyes and Breakers
Also Mazinger Z shoot em up is on there which surprised the hell out of me. Though it is double the cost of the other ACA ports (it's $15 not the usual $8)
Rival Schools is my go to for therapy!
