Hey all, I would like to remind you before commenting this video was written in March of 2020 and released in May. This was before many of the allegations began circulating in the FGC and any claims I make either way were not influenced by these events. Safe to say that nobody in any community would defend these horrible people and the same can be said for me. Fuck abusers, fuck pedos, believe victims its as simple as that. Peace.

@@kibowolf1153 Saying something vague and obvious like "false rape allegations are a thing" without anything else is weird. Is there a particular member of the FGC that you think was unfairly treated, or that the allegations against them were false? It would be much better if you mentioned that, rather than give a broad statement. False allegations are a thing. But sexual abuse is a thing as well.

    • @NihongoWakannai
      @NihongoWakannai 2 года назад +38

@@dudestep he's just addressing the vague statement of "believe victims". Because "believe victims" tends to actually mean "believe accusers"
If someone is proven to be a victim, there's no need for "belief" it's a fact.
Thus the statement of "believe victims" seems contradictory. A situation in which belief is necessary would be one in which you cannot be sure they are victims. And a situation in which you know they are a victim is one where belief is not required.

One of my favorite aspects of the Daigo parry that doesn't often get talked about is that in some recordings of the clip you can hear floe talking in the crowd and expressing worry about jwong throwing out a raw super on block as apparently Daigo had managed to parry the super earlier in bracket that day.
The fact that it didn't come out of nowhere honestly makes it even more exciting to me, like an anime character pulling out their secret technique it feels even more earned that they had proven themselves before and the idea that it was something that could be predicted as a small chance of happening again makes it all the more rewarding.

The amount of modes in each game and the amount of comics and other forms of media you have to sit through to even understand some of KOF or SFs lore is just not worth the effort. One thing to note as well is just how these 2 communities Melee and Ultimate are treated by Nintendo. If the FGC is the thug of the esports community then Melee is the manipulated child (at least in my eyes) with every passing game Nintendo is like HEY (Melee player) come play our new smash game with an invitational tournament then later on of the biggest tournaments in Melee could be shut down because the only way to play is on an emulator. Ultimate has it's own issues which have been documented, but when the only thing a community wants is to be left alone by Our creator instead of being lead on in hope HOPE that We get accepted by Nintendo and get helped. It doesn't excuse some of Our actions and how We act when We don't get a tournament spot but I hope it helps people understand why We react how we did.

As a 22yo who’s followed the Smash community since middle school, the ending of this was incredibly demoralizing to watch.
However, the change necessary for the community to mature and be “accepted by the FGC,” as it so desperately wants for some reason, _cannot and will not EVER_ happen and here’s why:
Smash is *too* accessible. It’s also a kids’ game on a kids’ console. Sakurai literally said he made Smash to be accessible and easy for newcomers. It was never even meant to be taken seriously. That’s why it’s so easy to get into for kids. How many middle schoolers do you know that play Smash vs literally any other fighting game? There is a disproportionate amount of children interested in competitive Smash vs any other fighting game. They get invested. They want to compete. They want to meet and beat their heroes. That’s why we have so many stories of kids like MKLeo back in the day and Sparg0 now making waves at such young ages, while that’s more of a rare occurrence in the FGC comparatively.
Not to mention Smash is extremely attractive even if you aren’t interested in comp. If you buy Guilty Gear, it’s to _play_ Guilty Gear, y’know? You bought it to learn a fun, competitive new skill. You bought a _hobby._ But people buy Smash just for casual fun with friends, or maybe because characters from a franchise they love just got added to it. Smash has insane reach and appeal to the broader public and that devastatingly increases the chance of weirdos, immature adults, and literal, actual children to stumble their way into the scene.
And that segues into the second issue: Smash is on a kids’ console. While the lower age of the average comp Smash player contributes greatly to the severely lowered average maturity level compared to the FGC, it also is on a console that is more geared towards children. While obviously there are some mature games on Nintendo consoles, the vast majority of main titles are kid friendly. There’s nothing wrong with adults enjoying them too, because the games are made for everybody, but that’s just it: they’re made for EVERYBODY. Compare stereotypical flagship games on Xbox and PlayStation vs Nintendo and it’s blatantly easy to see which side focuses more on making things kids can enjoy in addition to adults, versus the side that still has kids games, but also a large variety of games made _just_ for adults.
This fact about Nintendo basically echos the same effects Smash being accessible to children has on the community. Because Nintendo games are more cartoonish and made with children in mind, they have wider appeal. And while there is nothing wrong with liking less gritty, more cartoony media (I literally fall into that category lol), it has the propensity to attract people who like those things but also have stunted mental growth.
Basically, the average Nintendo console owner has lower maturity, either due to being a literal child, or being an adult more childlike in his or her thinking, and within that sphere, the average Smash player is even _more_ exaggerated in those categories. And because these adults in the Smash community are hanging around and communicating on Twitter with the younger players (even if they don’t realize it), the lack of maturity of those kids actually _rubs off_ on the older players.
Additionally, lots of content creators in the Smash scene have younger viewer bases than FGC content creators, because, again, Smash attracts younger players due to its wider appeal. This in turn, again, just amplifies the amount of kid-adult interactions in the community and fosters the _creation_ of manchildren in addition to attracting preexisting ones.
And I didn’t even touch on it but you can obviously see how that makes it easier for creeps and pedos to not only find their way into the scene, but be _CREATED OUT OF_ the scene. You get the gist so I won’t say any more.
Basically, tl;dr: the lack of maturity in the Smash community is a side effect of the type of game Smash is and the type of console it’s on, and because those _facts_ will never change about Smash and Nintendo, it is _LITERALLY_ impossible for the necessary growth the community needs to ever fully happen. It’s important for the community to still try and improve in spite of this, obviously, but at the end of the day, no matter how much progress we make, it will _always_ be a far more egregious problem for Smash than it is for the FGC, and that’s, unfortunately, just a fact.

After watching the Smash part of the video, I greatly disagree. I do think the whole Bocchi ordeal was horrible just as you said, but do note this isn't specific to the Smash community. The FGC also has incidents like this with the recent LTG/CeroBlast drama with plenty of people looking for clout, and as much as I hate this it's practically unavoidable when a large amount of people is involved. It's also untrue to say that the Smash community don't welcome new players to rise to the top - Ultimate has a ton of those (Riddles, Maister, heck even Toast). The reason Melee players want their game is because it offers a very different experience that's more valuable to them, which actually made a lot of sense during the era of Brawl (which was clearly catered to casuals); the most apt FGC comparison I can probably think of is stopping Melty Blood from being run in a tournament due to the presence of UNICLR. And while I agree that FGC figures stand out to me more, the Melee gods and top players of the past and present are very valid personalities. If I'm being frank, that part of the video, along with the SonicFox chapter, seemed more like a personal preference rather than actual history. While I enjoy the FGC more as a community, the Smash Community is equally valid, and the two share many traits, both positive and negative. There's definitely points I agree with and this video is still amazingly made overall, but there was stuff I thought lacked insight for sure.

Thanks for the great video bro! Thoroughly enjoyed but I do think the take on Smash community was one of the most biased and misinformed I've ever come across. Not really a part of the scene anymore myself as I have other interests going on but I do think you only portrayed a very niche part of it as being "the scene." Smash ultimate had the teenager new comer "sparg0" come into the scene and become one of the best in the world and he was revered and celebrated as a crowd favorite. The Bocchi incident sure is sad and appalling and it's not the only thing that has gone massively wrong in the scene but it's not representative of the international scene as a whole. The vast majority of the scene is very friendly and most people I've met are the most socially conscious people I've met in any FGC scene.
The thing about Melee you have to understand is that it's a grass roots scene that has had to constantly battle against Nintendo who is trying to destroy it. It's a very different place to be in compared to many fighting game companies that celebrate and support their competitive scene.
I do agree that the smash scene is stubborn and allergic to drastic changes but I think it's understandable because it's something they've had to build themselves starting from "house rules" because the game isn't built for a competitive environment. This also makes it very dear to the players and they become protective. I understand it might look silly from the outside but Melee truly is a unique installation in the series and jumping from Melee to Ultimate is honestly a massive leap. Not saying one is better than the other but Ultimate lacks most things that Melee is celebrated for and Ultimate brings a lot of things to the table that Melee never could. I don't think it's any different from people who still play Third Strike because they don't enjoy the new installations. They are very different after all. And we did have almost all of the Melee gods move into Ultimate too so I think the argument is a bit unfair.
Anyways cheers and thanks for the great video!

I don't think your portraying of the smash community is just tone deaf, it's misinformed. You can dislike leffen as much as you want and the guy surely is a divisive personality, but no other figure head of the community has stepped up and been a leader in the best sense of the word as he has when the smash community had that wave of abuse stories being exposed. He not only called out the other community leaders who had shit brought up about them, he actively took steps in order to make the issue as visible and discussed as he could. Also, most of the toxic behaviour you showed were from ultimate players, and a known douchebag in the melee community (westballz) who was even accused of abuse by mango's wife. Most of melee community is pretty chill, they just don't like the other games in the series (which is also understandable, seeing as how every other game is huge departure from melee's core mechanics and how Sakurai has gone on record saying he wants the other games to be different from melee).
Also, there's a reason for Armada's controller being an issue, and you could have researched it better if you wanted to. The kotaku article you showed actually explains why his problem was not just 'bitchery'.
I'm not saying the smash community is perfect and while it has improved significantly it still has a lot to go, but I think you went into this piece with a formed opinion, and that's a shame.

    • @duyan3010
      @duyan3010 3 года назад +20

This is true, I do think that him just calling armada a cry baby is uncalled for because his controller wasn’t working properly because it’s not the way it’s not supposed to work, like image you playing SF or anything other fighting game and playing in on a broken stick in a big tournament, instead of turning a blind eye and just saying stuff, he should put himself in other’s shoes. And the other “toxic” stuff he showed about the smash community was ether not researched enough, biased, or simply not the whole picture, plus i do think that he did not show all of the smash community, he just showed the bad side of the smash community... I mean I could just go in any community, even the FGC nowadays and just show the bad side and making look like a toxic acid pool. Instead of just showing the far between toxic stuff the smash community did, maybe show some good side to it because the people that have no idea about the smash community or what it’s truly like, you could make them shift away from it and think of it as nothing but toxic...

I was going to ask about melee but then i got to chapter 7 and i have a few points to make about this but ill keep them to myself as the chapter felt like a set up to pull contradiction but i want to say that this felt like a jab that was mildly deserved but when it was followed up by a shiryuken it feel like a rub in the wound. The community is split into ultimate and melee, being bunched into the same group felt wrong and over all it felt like you dont understand smash to the full degree. However that being said if we had a company like capcom perhaps we wouldnt have so many issues with our comminuty and things that happen out side of our tournements is not something we can control but i personally celebrate like a fighting game fame not as a smasher when i see someone break thier barrier i am excited. Either way i love this video all except for the disregard for every melee and smash as a whole has done.

Just saying: Melee and Ultimate are completely different scenes.
Being aware that comparing bullying a 15 year old with players staying with Melee because Brawl follows a completely different design philosophy is tonedeaf doesn't make it any better when you do it and therefore insult us Melee players for loving a game.
We (Melee Community) don't hate change, we are just forced to stay with Melee because no other game remotely comes close to what it is.
Also, in case you didn't know, Toph, who you included with a tweet where he calls out the Ultimate community, is one of the most important figures in the Melee community.

I straight up can't enjoy smash anymore because of the collective UTI that community has. I straight up played a CASUAL set against 2 tournament level players, utterly crushed them both(not trying to brag), and they both demanded to go into my games settings to see if I had some "comeback" mechanic enabled (I didn't, also I held the lead for the entirety of both sets so I literally wouldn't have gotten any bonus from it)
On top of that, one of them made me go into training mode to double check the damage and frames of my character's smash attacks
Like. I'm happy to go into training to lab some stuff and help a fellow player but I felt so icky after they both basically accused me of cheating or playing unfairly that I've lost any interest in playing smash competitively.
I really hope they get their shit together, Smash could be so much more than the toxic cesspool that it is right now.

On the one hand, many, many many many aspects and layers of this video are amazing and I LOVE that you made it. On the other hand.... implying multiple times that the FGC is homophobic etc. which is just not true anymore, making a massive deal about Alex Valle doing 'okay' at a touranment at age 36 like he's fucking ancient when for example Daigo is 42 and still kicking ass with absolutely no end in sight (and myself being in my 30s and just getting into fighting games seriously taking offense to that implication lmao), the way you dug around the 'dirty' parts of why Sonicfox owning as hard as they do and more FGC smack talk rather than just celebrating the player, randomly taking a hard detour into Smash and downplaying its entire community then bringing up a totally random universally distressing moment with the 15-year-old and pushing weird drama that didn't need to be brought up or showcased at all, being ageist AGAIN about Mang0, like... I eventually just had to stop watching lmao. Like, nice try, but you have some maturing to do before you can really pull off a vid like this. I do genuinely appreciate the attempt, though.
