Margaret Povey & Florence Nightingale would be first cousins, two generations removed (aka: twice removed). Assuming of course, that Povey's grandpa was Nightingale's first cousin of the same generation (her mom or dad's brother or sister's son).
People in the direct patrilineal or matrilineal (Father or Mother) line remain first cousins to the direct patrilineal or matrilineal descendants of their direct paternal or maternal ancestors first cousin. "Removed" means how many generations separate them moving forward or backward.
@@sparky6086 I was going to answer the same thing but you beat me to it! Yes, their most common ancestors was Florence's grandparents, so they are first cousins. And Margaret being a granddaughter of first cousins has her twice removed from Florence.
this can also be called a first cousin two generations removed and is can either be a grandchild of your first cousin or the first cousin of your grandparent.
I am a descendant of this family. My great grandfather emigrated from Sale in Manchester to NZ and became the NZ governments first stamp duty officer. We have a family tree descending from Florences father's brother.
As a nurse, your glowing appreciation for my chosen profession (which I feel was also a calling) warmed my heart. As a coincidence, I'm a night nurse. So, often, I too am the lady with the lamp. 😉🔦
My story with nurses. About 10ish years ago, I had foot surgery. The podiatrist, I didn't like. He knew it was my first surgery, but gave me no clue what to expect from recovery, and simply didn't have much time for me to begin with. After surgery, when it was time to remove the stitches. The nurse that was removing the stitches did everything she could to keep it from hurting. My only regret from that whole thing is NOT stopping on my way out to tell the staff at the waiting room desk how grateful I was for her doing that. (Yes, there was still pain with removing the stitches. They were located in the arch of my foot and some dried blood was there after all. I'm positive it would've been more pain if she hadn't have been trying to keep it from hurting.)

I do not know if other countries do this, but in Turkey, Istanbul University named its Faculty of Nursing, Florence Nightengale Faculty of University. Also, there are private hospitals that are using her name. Florence Nightengale Hastaneleri/ Hospitals to show her importance and role for nursing and patient care.
i just started my nursing degree and there is so much stuff that you have to remember just for the practice placements alone, thats not including coursework and assessments
I am not sure if nursing was considered low and dirty back then, but it was really strict and only the women of the church (the nuns) could nurse patiens, hence why some people still call "sister" to the nurses. Florence's biggest achievement/legacy was making the nursing a separate career and allowing people to study and practice it without being part or regulated by the church. of course, nursing was a thing for thousands of years before Florence was born, but she reformed the modern nursing into what it currently is.
It is suspected that Florence Nightingale suffered of ME/CFS, which is why the annual international ME awareness day is held on May 12th - her birthday.

In most places, a third cousin is someone who shares the same great-great grandparent as someone else. Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip are third cousins through Queen Victoria (Victoria - Edward VII - George V - George VI - Elizabeth; Victoria - Alice - Victoria of Hesse - Alice of Battenberg - Philip). Their relationship is slightly closer if linked through King Christian IX of Denmark; 2nd cousins once removed (He's the Queen's great-great grandfather, but Prince Philip's great-grandfather; Christian IX - Alexandra - George V - George VI - Elizabeth & Christian IX - George I of Greece - Andrew - Philip).
My family has tried for years to see whether a family legend that we are related to Florence nightingale is true. We have shores in our family tree at the same time as Florence was born, however the last missing links haven’t been found. Her family also had links to Derbyshire which make the legend seem plausible
Florence Nightingale did not do her nursing work in Crimea; she served in Scutari (now part of Istanbul) during the Crimean War, arriving there in November 1854. Despite it being over 300 miles away, and across the Black Sea, that was the site of one of the main hospitals for British troops stationed at Balaklava in Crimea. She did travel to Crimea in May 1855 and may have done some work in cleaning up the military medical units there but this is less well documented. Istanbul has 4 hospitals named after her today because of her work there during the Crimean War; there aren't any on the Crimean Peninsula as far as I know. Also, in the 1850s the germ theory of disease was still a decade in the future; she embraced the miasma theory that was the recognized theory of disease and she based the need for cleanliness around the principles of the miasmatic theory. By the mid-1870s she had embraced the germ theory but her adherence to cleanliness worked no matter which theory she embraced
A guess at the relationship between Florence Nightingale and Margaret Povey would be first cousin, twice removed. The common ancestor being a grandparent of Flo and Nicholson and the great great grandparent of Margaret.
I can say that Nightingales still exist. In fact I knew a nurse by the name of Nightingale, an aptonym in fact. I do not suspect she was related to the great Florence but she did have the name.

Why did Florence's dad inherit all that wealth and a new last name but his brother (your relation) didn't

I like how even she did the pie chart for data that would be better as bar graphs thing. That’s a real seasoned-classic, then.
My teacher was a Ms. Nightingale and she and her husband owned the Nightingale funeral home across the street from our school
I know someone with the surname Nightingale, no relation. However that relation Margaret Povey is is i think a First cousin thrice removed I think

In Australia that relationship would be called a third cousin but I believe elsewhere it's called a first cousin twice removed.

1st cousin twice removed is the technical name, but many people would mistakenly say 3rd cousin. It may be different in Australia though.
