Thank you for turing on the light for me! My second watch of this video and it really is a brilliant lesson! I am really enjoying your 2-part video lesson on Creating Values! Soooo worth it!
Wonderful!! That makes my day. I am doing this to share the things I have earned, and when I hear that it has been really helpful, well that's just great. Thank you very much.
When I taught watercolor classes, I had a baggie of grey and black torn shapes of construction paper that I would place into students paintings to show them how a darker value would make their painting pop. They started to visualize the possibilities!
There is grace in the brush strokes......a dance across the surface in this....it is mesmerizing to watch how you transform with colors and brush. excellent!!
I love the spare sure brushstrokes which really create soooo much texture. No fiddling in your work- hmmm, could surely be the not so secret of your success. Your work is so exciting. Thanks so very much for generously sharing.
CARL!!!!!!! Just rediscovered your RUclips channel. How I love to watch you paint while listening to you explain. Keep 'em coming. It is very motivating and inspiring....keeps me at my easel. I saw your painting, "The Cable Drum," posted in the UWS fall exhibition. It made me happy, and reminded me of sitting in your workshops in Ephraim. It's the mark of a true artist to make a piles of junk look beautiful. Nobody can do that as well as you.
You're very welcome! There are so many little things that we as instructors hardly think about as we paint, but that are questions in the minds of students. I'm glad you found this helpful. Thanks for the comment.
This is an informative, well-presented video on enhancing the tonal range in watercolour paintings. Placing a BEFORE and AFTER image adjacent to each other at the end of the video would have strengthened your message. Cheers.
It was was a wonderful day yesterday! I discovered you, your paintings and videos. Your art makes my heart so happy and my brain excited. Your work is beyond beautiful...thank you for your generosity!
A wonderful tutorial Carl. This is a great illustration of how a composition employing by design a full tonal range makes for a broader diversity in contrast and hence greater visual stimulus. There are two major needs that a viewer of art craves either knowing or unknowing - One is difference & the other is ambiguity - both have the ability to capture and retain the minds eye in a depth of cognitive dialogue.🙏
Thank you, Andre for that very insightful comment. One could walk into a painting class and without seeing any of the paintings, give the advise that they need to increase the range of their values. That would probably hit most of the paintings.
AMAZING video! I love the transformation you made happen there. I keep telling my taiko students the same thing.... we need to increase the dynamic range!!! It makes expression so much clearer and more enjoyable :) GREAT JOB Dad!!! And you're also getting super proficient at making these videos! Love you!
Great demo, thanks! I generally go dark via the classic route with ultramarine and burnt sienna, but going to try your method of laying colours side by side.
THANKYOU very much. Perfect tuition and inspiration. Fantastic demonstration from a gifted artist Much appreciated
You are very welcome. Thanks for your kind comment.

That's a good strategy. I too have done this. I have also painted on their paintings(with their permission of course)
I’m so glad I found you today! How did that not happen earlier? No idea. You deserve so many subscribers!
I'm so glad you did too. Thanks.

Great point! It only took me 30 years to learn that watercolor is like golf, the fewer the strokes the better the score.

Thanks, Vaughn. I guess I don't think of the pile as junk, only as an arrangement of interesting shapes.
Hi. I just now subscribed and I know I can learn a lot about watercoloring from you based on what I've seen so far of your videos. Thanks so much!
Awesome, thank you! I think we lose something valuable if we don't share.
what a great lesson..thank you soooo much for this!!!!

Very inspiring. Maybe I won't be afraid of darks. Beautiful.
Thanks. Darks are your friend because they make the lights pop.

Glad you enjoyed it! I am better at painting than I am at video. production. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you so much!I really appreciate your kind words. Sharing with others is the only lasting legacy.
Beautiful. I need to work on rocks. Perfect timing. Thanks Carl. Love your work.
Thank you. Rocks are hard (no pun intended).

@@CarlPurcellArt This is very true Carl so why don't painters give such advice ? I guess they are just painters and not educators !
Very very nice
Thanks a lot. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you. I would never haave been aable to do this without you, Rannoch.
Well we're far from even.... :) I owe you a lifetime!!! Love you Dad!!!

Thanks, David. I have found this method adds richness to the darks and suggests depth.
Wow. New subscriber here, this really brings home the message. Thank you. Love this painting.
Thank you, Christine. Too many art classes ignore this vital subject.
Thank you so much, Christine. Glad to be of help.
This is very helpful, thanks for sharing.
THANKS, DAVID. Glad to hear that.
Oh thank you! I'm going to see if I can fix some of my paintings!
Have fun!
Sometimes in a workshop I do a fix it session. I would guess that in about 90% of the paintings I do a fix on, it is in the area of values.

Hi Carl, I’m getting so anxious to paint, I think I’m having an attack!
Embrace the fear and go for it. Happy Painting.
