    When I was eleven years old I took violin lessons from a nun. She would stop slipping pegs by rubbing some chalk dust on them.

    Hi there, I subscribed to your channel a few months back as I picked up a Cecilio violin and wanted to start learning. Very recently this was the first time I encountered this problem with my A string peg, luckily your first step (to nudge the peg inward while tuning) was all I needed to do to make it stop slipping, I am so grateful as at first I was beginning to think I would have to take it in for repairing, but luckily that wasn't the case! Your channel has been tremendously helpful for learning violin - Thank you so much!!!

    instead of soap, you can also put chalk, the same one used for writing on tables or drawing on the walls. It also works great with writing pencils as long as they are not too greasy (most of the regular pencils are HB which are fine, but it works well with H, H2, but avoid B2 and higher).
    And of course, the all mighty baby talc.

    You didn't talk about replacing the pegs with geared pegs - like the Wittner fine tune pegs. Yes they are expensive ($30 or so per peg). They look like a regular peg but they have a gear mechanism inside so the whole peg isn't turning only the part that the string goes through. They make them for 3/4 and full size violins, violas. cellos and double bases - as well as ukuleles and guitars that use a peg head. As well as not slipping they are much easier to tune precisely because the gear allows finer control.

    The intro cracked me up hee hee I had this problem with a new student violin I've gotten literally a few days ago as of this comment, and it made me so sad. I came across a couple of videos for fixing it, and this one was the one the finally got it to gel for me. I wonder if it'll eventually start slipping again, though, which is why I am bringing it in for a lookover. I imagine the pegs will all be adjusted properly, and I know the bridge needs some adjustment. Your vidoes are the ones I've been watching to learn. It's going to be a rainy day indoors today, so, the perfect change to finally get some real practice and familarity with the instrument in!

    I just bought a violin and started tuning it and was confronted with slipping pegs problem. So I stumbled across this video. The advice that did work for me is wind the strings closer to the side of the violin. My only question is, why don't they initially make the hole through which the strings goes closer to the side? That would fix this permanently. I think I'm gonna drill new holes in my pegs and give it a try.

    I snapped my E string again... The 2nd time this month after trying to stop slipping. I live in a VERY hot country, no music stores...;(

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 лет назад +5

      If you are snapping your string, you are most likely yanking the string too much, too quickly. You will not snap the string if you really take your time and tighten it little by little.
      - Thread the new string into the hole in the peg, tighten the string till its 'taught' all the way up, making sure the bottom of the string is in the tail piece/fine tuner correctly and in the groove of the bridge with the little plastic tubing protecting the string over the bridge.
      - Then, tighten the string little by little by little. NEVER yank the string all the way to the note you want to tune it too as you will snap it.
      Just to replace one string takes me a good 10-15 mins and for a whole set about 30 minutes or more.

      Cindy Wu you should also always loosen your peg a bit before tightening it, so turn it a little towards yourself before turning it outwards. I experimented this problem Al lot myself since I live in India, which is a very very humid place

    Hello, this is a really useful video, so thank you!!
    I have recently inherited a very old violin (from the 19th century), and a few days ago tried to tune it for the first time. I'm pretty sure the pegs are loose and that is the only problem (I usually do #1 with my other violin, but the pegs are really too loose for this one), but i was wondering which solution would be best so I can start playing it as soon as possible, as it has such a beautiful rich tone! I would also like to avoid taking it to a repair shop for the time being.
    If you have any suggestions, I would love to know. Thank you x

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  7 лет назад +2

      If its an old violin I would advise you not to play about with the pegs, but get them professionally looked at. `they probably need tweaking. `the trouble with old violins that have potentially been 'sitting there' for a while is that all sorts of things can happen to the peg box. The pegs are mostly like ebony, and they need adjusting.
      If it were a cheap old student violin, its fine to mess about with them, but not on an antique. Get it fixed and sorted, and it will be lovely. Whilst the luthier has it, they will look it over and adjust the sound post too if necessary and trust me, it will come back lovely.

    • @TheArtsNinja
      @TheArtsNinja 7 лет назад +1

      Okay, thank you very much! Yeah, I haven't done anything to them yet, as I was worried too seeing how old it is. I will get it checked soon, and hopefully be able to play it for future concerts. Thank you again for your advice! x

    Damn American climate... This cold has been MURDER on my pegs! 😖 I just re-did every string TWICE and the pegs were STILL slipping! (I've had the violin for almost a year and never needed to tune before, nor undo the strings) I came very close to smashing the violin against the wall! Haha! But pushing them in as I tuned did help, and they seem to be stable now. Let's hope they stay that way. Also, I never realized how horrendously difficult and tedious it is to tune! A hairs width down and it's much too low, a hairs width up and it's much too high, and I'm being as slight as I possibly can! Would it help to mark the pegs and the box once I've got it right? Or will the "right" placement change next time?

  • @1234brianatthedoor
    @1234brianatthedoor 6 лет назад

    Hi Alison. Great tips! Why do your pegs have more than one hole? Is that so they're interchangeable and easier to wind the string against the side of the peg box?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 лет назад

      My peg box has no more holes than usual. I dont understand what you mean?

    • @1234brianatthedoor
      @1234brianatthedoor 6 лет назад

      I mean the peg itself. When you remove it from the peg box and turn it around to add compound at 4:30 it looks like it has more than one hole going through it, but perhaps my old eyes are deceiving me :) Of course it has one hole for the string to go through, with a front and back opening, but it looked like there was more than one drill hole through the peg.

      I don’t agree, but we are talking about solutions for violins under $100. No good quality student violin will have this issue - hence those people will not be looking for this video.

    I have a problem. My violin used to be my Papa's and it is about 55 years old. Whenever we tuned it with the pegs we would push the peg in a little. Now the peg holes in the scroll box are really big. Thank you for what you said in this video but it doesn't seem to be working, the first solution got me to where I am, I have the strings wound properly in the box, the thing I haven't tried is 'Peg Drops' I'm nervous that I'll add to much, I also tried the last suggestion with a bar of soap. Do you have any other ideas that I may try?

      I dont think there are any more tips - none that I can think of as I would have included them in this video! If none of the tips have worked, then its probably time to get a better violin...

    New student. Popping strings regularly. My pegs have never gone all the way through the hole. Is that normal?

    Had a peg slip once, I just rubbed "cigarette" ashes on the culprit. Worked a treat.

    I am such a sissy when it comes to e-string. Last time I tuned it when I was 11, the e-string broke and it cut my whole forearm, and there was this thin long scar. That definitely did hurt but I never told it to my mum ever since

    My pegs just dont stay in at all, just fall out even when the violin is tuned, It was a cheap violin. Will the soap or drops work or is it just falling out because of poor construction? I think it is carbon fiber and not wood.

      +ZackypoohAndFriends Have you tried all the solutions in this video? i would be surprised if none work and if none do work, then you could try and exchange it at the shop you bought it from as they shouldn't fall out like that unless they are really loose, which means they are unfit for purpose.

  • @merlynschutterle7242
    @merlynschutterle7242 4 года назад

    The sixth solution is get mechanical tuners. They may not look as nice, but they make tuning easier regardless of environmental issues. You don't even need fine tuners.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  4 года назад

      Very expensive, and they need to be fitted. They wont fint otherwise and you cant sadly just buy pegs and hope they fit properly into the holes as they wont. If they dont go in enough for example as the pre-drilled hole is too small, then they wont work well.

      @@TheOnlineViolinTutor Maybe, but they work well and that slipping and tuning issue is gone.

      Not a lot you can do apart from upgrade to a better violin.

      Hi, please answer immediately.
      My violin is from school (rented) and it costs 250 $ to make up for broken or damaged violins. If a string snaps, would it be considered broken? Please tell me, i'm scared I might get fined!!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, if a string has snapped, then you cannot re-use it. Just buy another and replace it and it will be fine. You shouldnt get in trouble as these things happen on the violin. I would think that as long as you replace it and put it back on the violin, it will be fine. It wont matter what strings are on the violin as long as they are on and all working.
