Let me tell you my funny story! I never played violin. I play guitar, mandolin and piano. When my granpa passed away, he gave me his violin. I did not play for a year. When i finally decided to play, it was out of tune. I watched a vid on youtube to get the right note and the fricking bridge flew right across the room! I cried 3 night straight! Thinking I had broken a violin who was passed on for 6 generations! Saved over a 1000$ to get it repaired and the artisan(yes he builds violin as a passion & knows everything about wood based instruments) He laughed so hard at me and explained that it was not glued on the violin lolll He fixed it without charging me and showed me how to tune it🤦 I took that money and bought myself a cheap violin to start practicing! Im never touching that violin again until i 100% know how to play😂
bridges are not supposed to be glued down. it relies on the tension of the strings, placement, and angle. dont recommend gluing it down... you should take it to a local luthier.

To be fair. Watercolor is more about skill than the material. I've seen people make good art with their coffee or blood lmao. Of course, preservations is where it gets expensive. More expensive materials just last longer. Value also rise up with expensive materials. This is a different though. Can't get good with a cheap violin if it's unplayable. I've seen pros try to play with a cheap violins and made it playable, but only because they immediately know what's wrong with it and how to adjust to it.
Don't be discouraged. Work with what u have. My first sax is Chinese maid. I told myself when the expensive one's is not accessible to me, this sax is therefore making it the best sax for my learning.
I am playing and performing on a sprektrum of instruments and I gotta say something for beginners: If you are unsure about wether or not you stick to the instrument. Go and rent a professionally made instrument! They are usually in amazing shape and fixed up to make your journey most pleasant. I did this with my flute when I was a kid, the piano and now with a Cello (I started learning two weeks ago. (Yes, I play 4 instruments^^) If you love the sound of an instrument don't waste money and nerves on poorly made things and if you end up realizing that the particular instrument isn't for you, you can give it back and someone else is being able to learn on it. ;)
Anderson Choi “oh hey, you sent the product over to amazon right?” “Yeah, this is going to help so many violinists out there” “violinists? This is supposed to be for archers!” “YOU SAID IT WAS FOR BOWS ITS NOT MY FAULT”
the fact that it costs $50,000 for a "professional" violin is just so sad ... so many talented people would never be able to afford one. I think this is also part of the reason why the classical music scene is filled with mostly upper class people. I'm not criticizing people for having money, but damn, I know it does not cost even close to $50,000 to produce a violin lol. Just seems over the top in terms of pricing. I'm a professional guitarist and the cost of each of my guitars varies from $800 - $2500. $2500 would be considered a "professional build", but in actually the additional cost is mostly for the prestige (e.g. the headstock logo showing up as "Gibson Les Paul" vs a "Gibson Les Paul Studio").
Violin making is incredibly difficult, and there are loads of factors that come into pricing. It also takes years to make them, I see it as a pretty equal price match, but it still really sucks that thry arent widely available for cheap. Ik there are some carbon violins out there though, there are a lot of luthiers trying to figure out how to produce a carbon violin with an authentic sound so people can afford one that's cheap and durable!
I'm a guitarist as well, but guitar and violin are built different. Reason even the technique in making violin took years to learn and even a good luthier wouldn't even be able to make violin as close to what it was in the past, such as Stradivarius, etc. For a classical guitar a basic mass produced Yamaha would work well and sounds good, I started with a $80 Yamaha Guitar as a starter, which for a violin the same price probably would not be as satisfactory. Each piece in the violin, are supposed to be handmade and really made to detail. A mass produced violin won't sound the same, reason why their price is soooo high.
Yeah, saving up for a 1k dollar bass is a lot for me, I'd hate to be saving up for a violin ( I don't think being 13 and not having a real job helps but....)
I actually bought the first one they had as my beginner violin and had to send it back 2 times… I got one from them and finally was able to play it.. I had to buy my own strings (about 60$) and it worked perfectly (the bridge wasn’t flat) .. so if a person can’t afford a expensive violin you can buy the first one and buy a set of good strings and make it work.. as a beginner one of course (buy a more expensive one later on when you know you’ll stick to playing)
The second violin in here...is literally the violin i have.....i had a budget..now i dunno what to do....like...TODAY I HAVE MY FIRST SESSION ALRIGHT WOW I HAVENT EVEN STARTED AND BOOM

Yea I was thinking the same thing. I got mine for about the same price. And am in love with mine. If I payed $400 for a violin the place where I live will kill me.
Anjali a violin that cheap might have problems that will affect your playing, or anyone’s for that matter simply because they might not be built right. The best thing you can do would be to go to the nearest music store and see the cheapest violins that they have and confirm that they’re not total garbage, but that might not be possible right now for obvious reasons. I don’t mean to discourage you, but it would suck if someone stopped playing because their instrument was crap.
@@hurrikane5562 i understand. I cant even find a place to even rent one, even if i did i dont think it would be very safe. Guess I'll just stick to my guitar for now 😔

emily chan Exactly! I’ve thought that for months. I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten one yet. Although, to be fair, I don’t know how much a professional-quality shoulder rest typically costs
They have money to buy all these rubbish in this video, they will have money to buy a new shoulder rest. More like most musicians have attachment issue
As an instrument maker, I've had quite a few violins like this brought into my workshop when the owners discovered they were unplayable. It's hard to tell them that the only cure is to throw it away and get a better instrument.
@@myes344 I guess it depends on what you consider "playable" to mean. Yes, you can make sounds with a violin like this. But since these instruments are mostly machine made, they are as a rule very badly set up, the strings are so high that they are next to impossible to press down to the fingerboard, and thus especially for beginners and children very frustrating to try to play. Setting them up properly usually costs more than a better violin would have cost.
@@therealzilch Yes, you can actually watch Olaf the Violin maker, he has a youtube channel (in case you don't know). He's a luthier and friend of Twoset. He said exactly the same thing as yours and price the playable violin cost after improving it to the price that Twoset mentioned in this video, which is around $400.
@@cdiking7026 The guitar has an easier learning curve- you can make pleasant sounds sooner than on the violin. But to play at a professional level, it's hard also.

I don’t think this was the intended take away from this video, but watching this made me want to practice my violin again for the first time in 5 years
These comments made me much more grateful that my middle school orchestra teacher, when I was just starting out only supplied instruments that were $500 minimum, and she would rent them out for $25 per school year with free instrument and string repairs.
My school owned rented violin costs me like 25€ per semester because of insurance, and that's it. It's so sad that only two or three studemts use the opportunity with me - it's basically free violin classes.
As a luthier, I have had the dubious privilege of setting up a lot of these monstrosities. Eddy and Brett did a great job calling out a lot of the obvious problems with them. Plastic necks, unfitted bridges, the grooves in the nuts are always wrong. A lot of times it is possible to set them up to be barely playable, but considering how terrible they sound it’s really not worth it.
I'm not a professional luthier, but I got into it as a hobby, and what i've seen is that the below $100 range aren't really worth upgrading, but above that price can easily be made playable and the real thing is that the good ones are almost shockingly sturdy. Kids drops them and they fall pegbox down, and don't shatter. The wood is thicker, which makes them heavier duty, but of course that thickness of material hurts performance and playability(too think of neck, heavy makes it harder to practice for longer, doesn't resonate as well and sounds stifled). I have had a couple of these cheap amazon student instruments that actually shocked me. They are usually just set up really poorly. One they dropped and popped some glue seams loose, sound post fell out, bridge broke. After gluing the seams back together, the sound post was pretty crappy so I cut and fit a new one. The bridge was total loss so I shaped a cheap teller bridge, probably $10 in materials and after i finished i was actually shocked how good that violin sounded. I also adjusted one where the bridge was unplayable out of the box, practically square, too high, and not carved down at all(pretty much a blank, i mean 30 seconds of effort was made to fit that bridge. I fitted the feet properly, thinned it, shaped the top properly and it was pretty good after that.
My guitar tech friend once told a guy to buy a new guitar instead of trying to get a cheap Amazon guitar set up properly. "I told him it would be cheaper than replacing literally every component in it." I'm just glad guitars are cheap compared to everything else.
My luthier (well, the one I usually go to) doesn't even touch those horrible plastic violins. Even though he refuses to work with them he has *a lot* to say about them.
est1420 we don’t do it for paying customers, but there’s a charity we do set-ups for that takes donations of all levels. If it’s possible to be set up, they want it done because they distribute to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have an instrument at all.

@@lottabubbles1596 no, i think the conductor played the kid's violin as a demonstration which led to the realization that the violin sucked, not the friend
When I was in 4th grade, I played violin and my uncle got me my violin. It was my first time playing an instrument. After some investigation, I recently learned my violin was bought off amazon for $60. No wonder I quit after the first year. My dad has informed me that after he finishes paying off my trumpet, (In August 2020) I am allowed to start playing another instrument. I am currently considering starting violin, once again, with a proper student violin and with more music knowledge and experience! :)
jmitterii2 that’s actually not necessarily true. If you buy an a hundred year old violin with good tone and great craftsmanship for 2000 dollars, in 40 years that violin could cost more as the age of it increases. As long as it is still in amazing condition, age of a violin really adds to the price as new violins are often looked down upon
I will forever be grateful that when I wanted to learn and got the tiniest violin to "play", Amazon was not yet invented and my parents rented one from an actual music store. Wow.

I wonder if they would claim you just got a lemon and offer to exchange it or if they thank you for the critique and say they're going to fix the products or if they're angry lol

Just wanted to put it out there that these violins are a bit too cheap for playing. But, if youre just starting the violin and you can afford this, the $200 violin from walmart actually is really good. I now play a $7,000 violin body with a $5,000 bow. There is a huge difference but for starting, I definitely recommend the walmart one.
Pawn shops are good, too. They usually don't know anything about violins and you can get something much nicer than the $200 for much less. Though I'd recommend a beginner bring an experienced player who knows what to look for in a quality instrument
When I decided to start learning how to play the guitar, I bought a cheap $50-$100 'Lotus' guitar. It would've been just fine for a beginner to learn. But, as soon as I started learning the basic fundamentals, I ran out and bought a $3000 Gibson Les Paul. It didn't improve my playing any. I should've kept practicing on the cheap one until I got good, then buy a better guitar and I would've appreciated the higher quality a lot more.

That is such a good story. I play kalimba as I can't get instruments like guitar now due to my age and studies. Have a good life man🌸

the fact that it costs $50,000 for a "professional" violin is just so sad ... so many talented people would never be able to afford one.
Right? A professional guitarist could EASILY make a professional sound on a £300 squire or epiphone.
Sometimes your just paying for the name
This actually explains a lot, the problem is my $80 violin, not my skills... It's all clear now... 😂

As an instrument maker, I've had quite a few violins like this brought into my workshop when the owners discovered they were unplayable. It's hard to tell them that the only cure is to throw it away and get a better instrument.
How are u a maker. This violin works. Dont bereve me? Go watch anyone else review this same violin. I don't trust the things u make btw
"I told him it would be cheaper than replacing literally every component in it."
I'm just glad guitars are cheap compared to everything else.

My dad has informed me that after he finishes paying off my trumpet, (In August 2020) I am allowed to start playing another instrument. I am currently considering starting violin, once again, with a proper student violin and with more music knowledge and experience! :)
Godspeed my guy
rent!
Good luck on your journey!!
See if there is a luthier in your area, especially a young one. You might be able to get a cheap and good sounding violin.
I'm currently using my $60 violin, and I hate it because its terrible that's why I quit practicing .😔
A 400$ violin is just... playable
Me: hugs my 2000$ violin
Violin: yeah Im good
*My bank account: and Im dead*
Hopefully you'll keep playing. I have no idea of the resell value of most instruments, but I can imagine you won't get 2,000 back.
jmitterii2 great way to spoil a day
jmitterii2 that’s actually not necessarily true. If you buy an a hundred year old violin with good tone and great craftsmanship for 2000 dollars, in 40 years that violin could cost more as the age of it increases. As long as it is still in amazing condition, age of a violin really adds to the price as new violins are often looked down upon
@Gargi Jejurikar no
I see jungkook :)
I will forever be grateful that when I wanted to learn and got the tiniest violin to "play", Amazon was not yet invented and my parents rented one from an actual music store. Wow.
I am 70 years old and i honestly believe that the private music lessons that i paid for my little girl from 8 years old to 18 were the best investment i made in my life. Of course she truly wanted to play. she plays piano violin viola and anything she puts her hands on.
that's nice!
Twoset are torturing themselves again after that classical remixes 😭😭😭 luckily they have lingling insurance to protect them
Rieny A. Bandan Yes pray to lingling insurance saving their lives every 48 hours of day and night.
They should play the cheap Violins with a handsaw.
@@rangabusi So true
Eddy: I'm not tuning this E string any higher, it doesn't feel right.
Every guitarist restringing their guitar.
Do the companies that make these crappy instruments ever reach out to you via email or comment section to explain themselves? I wonder if they would claim you just got a lemon and offer to exchange it or if they thank you for the critique and say they're going to fix the products or if they're angry lol
they definitely don't care, they don't put any effort into the products and their whole point is to make nai've (probably old) parents and grandparents think they are useful in some way
Now they have a “violin/viola” to test the child-stand-on-a-violin-theory.
Awesome, and they can bring in Brett's son to use as the child.
steem sprite Didn’t know Brett has a son, but great idea!
Brett's been a child before he can do it again.
@@xandraxandra1437 He doesn't actually 😂 but in the video where Eddy bought him a viola for his birthday there was a little kid roaming around his house and Brett said it was his son Kachikawawa: ruclips.net/video/B_nFV0zdv5U/видео.html
Omg I actually thought that first violin was actually playing, I was like hey it sounds really nice actually
unironically, my first thought was like; wow, im buying that immediately.
The bowing was off the sound.
It did not sound good.

I bought a $90.00 violin on Amazon because it was all I could afford and wasn't sure if I'd like violin (I'm 57 and flit from hobby to hobby quite a bit). So far it's a great instrument for me, I learned how to tune it, even changed a string to make sure I knew how to do it just in case. It came with a decent bow and rosin, a neck rest and extra strings. I'm getting some wonderful sounds out of it and think it was a great deal and will last me years. 🎻
Brett: "I need to have a shower after. It's so dirty."
*three months later*
*showers with the violin*

BRETT IS SO SAVAGE AHAHAHAHA
You guys are the Gordon Ramsay’s of violin criticism. 😂
Wow 200 likes thank but don’t like the comment like the video.
Oh, please, I would roast this.

pingpongpung it’s right
I love your show and especially love you guys getting angry at the junk that people get sold who want to try to learn the violin but it isn't even worthwhile stuff. Thank you for making us that much more aware that we should just not Try to buy a used violin rather than these horrible faiith the Violins. You guys are so VERY FUNNY AS YOU NOT ONLY Unwrapping the ACCESSORIES❣️❣️
The lesson can be applied to all aspects of life: if it’s cheap, there’s a reason why.
Never felt so stressed watching a twoset video:
**using their bows on cheap crappy instruments**
**over 100 dollars worth of crap**
**some are out of footage**
**twoset thinking over their decisions in making this video**
But still, this is why i enjoy watching you guys. 😂❤️
Their bows! I couldn't stand it!
*cries in cant even afford a 5 piece mcnugget meal*
Pawn shops are good, too. They usually don't know anything about violins and you can get something much nicer than the $200 for much less. Though I'd recommend a beginner bring an experienced player who knows what to look for in a quality instrument
I didn't even know walmart sold Violins ;-; lol
When I decided to start learning how to play the guitar, I bought a cheap $50-$100 'Lotus' guitar. It would've been just fine for a beginner to learn. But, as soon as I started learning the basic fundamentals, I ran out and bought a $3000 Gibson Les Paul. It didn't improve my playing any. I should've kept practicing on the cheap one until I got good, then buy a better guitar and I would've appreciated the higher quality a lot more.
*cries in country that doesn't have walmart (Germany)*
Wow this video went PSA in 2 minutes flat, gentlemen this is epically good, This IS the video All beginners need to watch or any beginner who wants to start this IS that video you need to watch, so informative so instructive so educational I'm glad I found your channel.
