Heard a sad story of Guarneri's life. He lived at the same time as Stradivari and struggled competing him. During his life he wasn't highly recognized (mostly because of the fame of Stradivari) and her violins' sound was considered as squeaky an hissing. But the fact is that at these times violin concerts were run in small rooms for small groups of listeners. When music became more popular for the masses and concerts were organized in much bigger audiences it appeared that Guarneri violins sound much better and brighter in those big spaces but the master already passed away by that time. That was the reason why Paganini preferred Guarneri over Stradivari. And that's why, unfortunately, there are only about 30 Guarneri violins left (comparing to 400+ Stradivari's) nowadays.
I don't think people realize that Brett and Eddy's violins are probably worth like $10k + maybe even more. Those are old violins and they are professionals. I have looked up Brett's instrument. He plays an old Scrollavetza which goes for between the $20k-$30k range (AT AUCTION = MORE FOR RETAIL). Another thing I want to mention is that Benny's bow also makes a huge difference at that level. It could perhaps be a Pecatte or a Tourte which costs more than Brett's violin alone ( ~$100k respectively)
"Old" doesn't just mean "good." There are new instruments that sound way better than plenty of old ones. Most of the time it's just a placebo effect tricking people into thinking some old piece of crap sounds better.
@@herbertguo3498 hm that's not always true though, for broke professionals like me (aha) i use a 900 dollar violin. its more about the sound than it is the pricetag.

Last Saturday I attended Benny's concert in Taiwan. We all know that Benny is an incredibly amazing, talented violinist, and his recordings are beautiful for sure, but let me tell you something: they certainly pale in comparison to his live performance. It was the most magical experience. It's been days and I'm still thinking about it. So if you ever get the chance, do go to concerts, immerse yourself in the powerful sound that came straight out of the instruments (btw, if I'm not wrong, Benny's playing on a Strad now). I almost died when Benny (in a shy manner) reminded the audience that there are still a few movements left. (And everybody clearly liked dat ;)) I even heard a girl nearby whispering 'aww he's so cute ;-; ' and I was like I KNOW RIGHT)
Wow, Benny seeing that the Guarneri fits better with Eddy's style and Strad with Brett's makes so much sense. These two have their unique "flavor" in playing and I cannot describe it better than how Benny did it.
@@Roma-kp4qg He's like "Sorry babe, you sound much better with someone else playing on you". Kind of reminds me of how I felt so useless compared to other classmates, and that's the reason I quit playing instruments haha

What makes Benny an amazing musician is not just his ability to physically play well (even though that's off the charts), he obviously has an amazing ear, and the ability to instantly recognise what can make something sound better, or what kind of instrument would suit what style of playing. Having this ability to make judgement calls on playing, sound, instrument, technique etc puts him in a league of his own. Just wow.
To be honest I have my doubts. I really don't hear a difference between the violins, even with my really good headphones. A lot of it is probably placebo. There is a test on this. They tested the sounds of different stradivarius violins and the blindfolded listeners couldn't commonly exact on a definitive difference. It's mostly placebo. But if there is a difference, it is miniscule and border-line imperceptible.
@@TheReal4th bro trust me a true violin player can and will hear the difference for you and me it's not so different because we are no experts (assuming you are not) if my grandma would see a 400€ PC and a 3000€ PC next to each other, but all she can imagine on it is solitaire, she will see no difference but me as a passionate af gamer that pours his energy into gaming and PC's will look at this from a lot more and a lot different perspectives and can clearly see the difference between the two
@@chickenbob562 That's an interesting take on it and a very good explanation. While I have never touched a violin, I can tell the subtle differences in the pitch. Also, the higher quality a violin is, the smoother the transition between notes seem to be like the difference between hollow and solid wood when you knock on it. That's my observation at least but yes: just like with any skill set, the more practiced you are in it, the easier it is to pick up on the nuances and tell what makes a proper tool for the job at hand.

Have to agree with Benny that when Brett fixed his chin position on the Guarneri, the sound got more vibrant and brighter. While when he back using his previous chin position, the sound got a little bit muted. Amazing
I don't know anything about violins or famous violinists, but I always enjoy TwoSet's special guests. Benny seems like a really sweet person. Brett's violin has a fuller sound with more pronounced mid-range frequencies. Eddy's for some reason lacks a little bit of low-end especially compared to the other two. The Guaneri sounds like it fucking harmonizes itself no matter who played it.
Art Deco I think the comment above referred to how full the sound was for that violin. In other words, the violin is sooo good. It’s probably just a phrase not meant to take literally.
This is the video that made me start the violin. I was just randomly scrolling through youtube. Somehow the clickbait-title made me watch it and their awesome dynamic made me stay. @@charlesfranks1902 in fact, we should "ask more" to our instruments trying to imitate the great sound of great players that we love. Gee such a humble guy. There's something loud and clean about the Guarneri? But I liked hearing him play on Eddy's violin a lot. He's like a violin whisperer lmao
The biggest difference isn't the tone or pitch. It's the amount of resonance. The 10M is so clean. There is very little resonance it's a lot more clear than the other two, especially open G. That's really the biggest difference I noticed.
@@LetsDrawDragons so 4:19 listen to the overtone ( you can hear the sound inside the shell) then when he switches, there is almost no overtone. I feel you can hear the sound being trapped inside the shell, where as the more expensive one there is so much more velocity. The notes just sound so powerful and bright.
It's hard to hear through RUclips and a microphone, but that's the sense I got too. Benny's fiddle just sounded like the music was filling the whole instrument more. A friend who plays cello described playing his sub-$1,000 instrument vs one with a $50,000 price tag once. He said the 50k one but "responded instantly" whereas his cello felt like it had to spend a fraction of a second catching up.
It's a dryer sound. As wood ages the inner moisture and sap drys up and hardens. I'm a guitarist, same thing happens in guitars and produces the signature dry and clear sound vintage guitars have. It makes the response time of the instrument quicker as well
@@ランダムドイツ人 I think in one of their video featuring Olaf, Olaf said Brett's violin is almost 50k dollar (not sure usd or aud) so he would treat it very carefully or smth like that
The sound of the Guarneri violin was deeper, more mature, and you could hear every note more clearly. It seemed like the notes came out of the Guarneri the most easily. I think that the violinist makes the most difference overall, but when comparing one violinist on three violins, I heard how easily the notes came out with a clear tone, the violin definitely makes a difference. While on some violins the violinist must work to get a good tone on every note, while on others it just comes out naturally, that's the difference.
@@staneagle1070 yea but most of the price is due to rarity and story behind. Not a violinist expert but I would bet you could get similar sounding modern violin (quality wise, as generally instruments usually sound unique to each other anyway) in under a million
I think the experience adds to it also. As Benny is already touring around the world, I bet the practice time he’s spending is twice or more than Brett and Eddy so his bowing has more control and his ears are more sharp.
Maybe but keep in mind that if you don't do this experiment blinded, it might just be because you know what is the violin and because you are excepting one to be better, therefore that's how you perceive it ;)
I bet you the bow was also super expensive so that changes the tone and quality of sound. I’m sure if he played the violin with a super cheap bow it wouldn’t sound so rich.
dont bother. u tube compression algorithm got your back. it turns everything into shit no matter the headphones. also u d need expensive sound card and a good cord

Michael Sternberg what amazed me was Benny’s immediate analysis of Brett and Eddy’s playing. He was able to tell eddies bow pressure vs. Brett’s bow speed (and what suits them more, Guarneri vs Strad), bretts chin tone thing, and as you said the different players and violins combos. His analysis is pretty impressive and what he was able to tell about Brett and Eddie separate playing style
I mean ... It wasn't the most impressive part, since I played the game too and I heard differences ... But just how he plays, how he knows so much about violins to tell what was the problem, it's just ... Mesmerizing ! I wish I could be as dedicated to something as he seems to be ...
You have to listen it live to actually hear the difference. I dont know any about violin but I can tell a good intrucment can provide louder sound. And louder is not enough. A goos intrucment can sent the sound farer with good quolity. I mean, even you sit so far, it still sounds it plays close in front of you. Classical music usually doesnt use amp or any electric device. So the quolity of the instrucment has to be good to play music to hundreds of people in a hall.
at least I have $20 Sony Xtra Bass over-the-ear ones (cheapest in their range) ... I'm happy I could hear the difference in Vibrato though! The Guarneri had really a Rich tone to it and deeper vibrato while other two were more pitchy in comparison.
I'm so amazed just how different it is. The 10m is so warm and full and resonant. It just shouts the notes out. Then Brett's is nice and warm but much less resonant. Eddy's was all resonance. It sounded like it was hollow almost. Such a stark contrast.
I had the same comparison. The 10m one sounds "full" and darker, Brett's sounds lighter and like it isn't as powerful but still nice and warm, Eddy's sounded like a cardboard box in comparison.
Benny is amazing. However, without you guys, my wife and I won’t even get to know him! You guys should be very proud of what you have brought to the world. You make people like me start to understand the wonderfulness of classical music and violin. In terms of influence, you guys might outperform almost every genius musicians in the history. Just think about it. That is an amazing achievement to tell your grand children!
Yes!! I would have never heard classical music if it weren’t for them. I still don’t like it really or tbh understand or feel it but I’ve started liking one or two pieces and actually considered giving it a try
Wow the $10M is so much...bolder and richer. Brett’s violin is also quite rich/deep though, just a bit dryer. Eddie’s violin is much dryer and much brighter. So interesting. Also the chin thing really shook me. I’ve never, ever thought about my chin position before heck what.
The real impressive part is how Benny was able to tell who (Brett or Eddy) was playing, after hearing them played only briefly before the blind challenge. 👏👏👏
"It's not the instrument, it's the player that makes the music." The same lesson our music teachers have been telling us for years. This video is about benny's unstoppable force as a musician. He'd still sound gorgeous even with a $100 violin.
Listening to Benny play, the $10M violin does actually sound ever slightly like it's two violins playing perfectly together if that makes any sense? Like the strings vibrate with more subtlety and character and richness with it.
@@jessas231 I'd be really curious to see, for all 3 violins: 1) the audio waveform recordings 2) the spectral analyses of each 3) while recorded in a clean sound room
so u guys really think he would hold a 7 million dollar violin with one hand as easy as that, even _HAVING ONE, no one would lend you one for a video, but u guys cant see, sheeple
I can also hear a difference. No need to know anything about violing playing, it's more like reference listening. :') Similar to "can you hear the difference between 128kbps, 320kbps and lossless audio". or... Idk.. listening to different drum samples, like "this one sounds veiled, this has a tss sound and this is a hard kick"...
yea me too. especially bc we already sampled both of their playing for the same piece and u could already tell the difference blindfolded or not-u would just need to first see who played which and then u will know. i honestly liked brett’s playing for this piece more!
10:53 Eddy fanboying over Benny's playing is the most precious thing ♥️ Also, Brett's tone improved when Benny corrected his chin position. It sounded much fuller whereas the first time he played, it sounded more closed off (sound not projecting fully) (Late to the discussion but who cares 🤷)
I think that Benny’s analysis and suggestions were spot on... Brett’s cheek was absorbing the sound a bit from when he changed his position... As well as Benny’s violin sounded much rounder than both Eddy’s and Brett’s... It’s definitely more about who plays versus what’s played... This was super eye opening....
Well there are certainly diminishing returns at a certain point. If they actually got a 'cheap' violin for comparison (~$500), there would be a very noticeable difference. However, Brett and Eddy already have good instruments; sure, they might not be worth millions, but they are by no means cheap. Of course, I have no way of knowing their instrument's price for sure, but I'd be surprised if they were less than $5000.
Proper setup is crucial, which can often be lost in the extremely low end of pricing range, so I would definitely say their estimate of $1000 (while likely a little low for their actual instruments) is a realistic if you want a guarantee that an instrument is set up correctly and won't have major issues that could impact your playing.
@@KevinWangz It's doubtful their instruments are below $10,000 -15,000. Few violinists progress through the collegiate level and into professional play without upgrading to a "pro-level" instrument. Usually if you're good enough to become professional the differences in a better instrument are more obvious to you and therefore upgrading is worth it. Cheaper violins simply don't project as easily or provide as good of tone closer to the bridge, however, a very excellent player can overcome this to some degree. You can definitely tell Benny struggles to produce the same piece on their violins and there are several notes that are lacking vibrancy and stand out compared to the del gesu. As with all things diminishing returns. A $100 violin will usually be 10x worse than a $1,000 violin. A $10,000 violin will probably be 2-3x better than a $1,000 instrument. Any of the $50k+ instruments are marginally better and mostly only have that value for rarity and prestige. Yes the Gesu sounded noticeably better than their violins but only with Benny playing, and he's so good he can almost make their violins sound like a million bucks too.
Paul D. sometimes i forget their instruments might be worth thousands of dollars (i looked up the maker of Brett’s violin) because they abuse it so much lmao and considering they were concertmasters in their respective orchestras, we can safely say their violins are definitely not cheap. i wonder about their bows, though, because i haven’t seen anyone talking about quality and price range of bows yet.
@Captain Feeney it was because he just played better but he was very cautious with his words and not saying anything to hurt them. I think one can't be more humble than that

When you're listen to a $10000000 violin on $10 headphones so you actually cant tell the difference
Mines are $3 only, so...
Mines are €200 but it also depends on the audio card
You have to listen it live to actually hear the difference. I dont know any about violin but I can tell a good intrucment can provide louder sound. And louder is not enough. A goos intrucment can sent the sound farer with good quolity. I mean, even you sit so far, it still sounds it plays close in front of you. Classical music usually doesnt use amp or any electric device. So the quolity of the instrucment has to be good to play music to hundreds of people in a hall.

Ooh brighter, and dry, those are good words to describe the sound.
You mean the $1,000 violin sounds less wet and poorer than the $10M
Yes agree with that. Definitely.
You never noticed that the violin rings more freely when you don't press with the head? Interesting...
The real impressive part is how Benny was able to tell who (Brett or Eddy) was playing, after hearing them played only briefly before the blind challenge. 👏👏👏
WOW! i don't even have a violin but the way Benny diagnosed the problem at 5:36 is mindblowing!!
Even Brett who is quite professional was surprised!
Omg I think thats a really good way of putting it, I was thinking that it had a richer deeper sound and I like that comparsion
@@jessas231 I'd be really curious to see, for all 3 violins:
1) the audio waveform recordings
2) the spectral analyses of each
3) while recorded in a clean sound room
Dude when I first listened to the 10 million dollar I thought of the same exact thing that it almost sounded like two in perfect sync
LIKE IT HAD TWO SPEAKERS
srry caps
so u guys really think he would hold a 7 million dollar violin with one hand as easy as that, even _HAVING ONE, no one would lend you one for a video, but u guys cant see, sheeple
I can hear a difference.
*me knowing nothing about violins.
I can also hear a difference. No need to know anything about violing playing, it's more like reference listening. :')
Similar to "can you hear the difference between 128kbps, 320kbps and lossless audio".
or... Idk.. listening to different drum samples, like "this one sounds veiled, this has a tss sound and this is a hard kick"...
You can def hear a difference between the 10m one and the rest, with decent speakers/phones. Much more richer. I bet it's even more obvious irl.
yea me too. especially bc we already sampled both of their playing for the same piece and u could already tell the difference blindfolded or not-u would just need to first see who played which and then u will know. i honestly liked brett’s playing for this piece more!
This RUclips .... the audio quality is limited
The emotion that comes through Benny’s playing is incredible. He does make the violin sound very different from Eddy and Brett.
I felt that. (12:34)
And Eddy and Brett are as far above me as Benny is ahead of them
Does anyone know the name of that piece?

@@elenasobran2748 a million thanks.
i miss twoset already
10:53 Eddy fanboying over Benny's playing is the most precious thing ♥️
Also, Brett's tone improved when Benny corrected his chin position. It sounded much fuller whereas the first time he played, it sounded more closed off (sound not projecting fully)
(Late to the discussion but who cares 🤷)
yea! i didnt really notice anything when he played the first time but after he corrected it and went back i was like WOW
Gear doesn’t matter confirmed?
I wish Benny had a youtube on his master class
Ok, we can all agree - 80% player and 20% violin
I love how it's been more than 3 years and Brett hasn't sold his violin yet
"I'm gonna sell this soon" LMAO
I wonder if he can actually sell it for a higher price now, as a violin that was owned by Brett of Twoset-fame!
@@Fidi987 He can make an auction and someone would buy it for a lot more than its actual worth. Twoset are like idols at this point
Both of them while watching Benny play their own violins be like, "My violin can make that sound??!"
They had the chance when Benny was blindfolded.

Nothing like a humble artist who knows his craft inside and out. Incredible.
@Captain Feeney it was because he just played better but he was very cautious with his words and not saying anything to hurt them. I think one can't be more humble than that

What song is it?
@FattyMcjohnson I’m pretty sure it glazunov violin concerto in a minor. Brilliant piece
Gluzanov? Not Tchaikovsky? Ah thank youuu, I'm so tone deaf that I can't differentiate what's Benny plays and tchaik 2nd movement
do you know the song playing at 2:14?
