@@cristian-flaviusradu2090 oh no!! 🥺 In order to prevent breaking a string, I suggest playing the pitch on something while you tune. This way, you won't go above your intended pitch. Also, make sure that you push to peg in WHILE you turn it. This will prevent the peg from slipping. I hope this helps!

Yes, it is appalling how may players AND shops are unaware of how to properly string violins. I think the biggest issue is that a lot of luthiers do not play the violins they repair. They string them up and have no idea the frustration that soon occurs for the players when they play their violin for a little bit. Glad I could help!
Destring the violin, pull the pegs, and put rossin on part of the peg that contacts the wood. Always worked for me. It increases the amount of friction between the two different woods (or plastic for some pegs I guess). Just like rossin increases friction for the bow and string.

Yes, it's definitely a learned skill and the more you do it, the better you get at it. Just remember to do everything gradually. If your violin is REALLY out of tune, you'll have to go back and forth between the pegs and the bridge for a while until you get where you want to go. You won't be able to do both in one fell swoop.
I have a Kennedy violin, and I just began experiencing the slipping pegs. I was so discouraged! I am so glad that I found this video for a solution. Thanks!!
Thank God, one of the 1st videos to pop up on 'slipping violin pegs' search! Joel, this is so kool and I will try this. I'm a guitarist exploring the violin...Thank you!
Ahhhh yes. Guitar players usually are quite frustrated with violins because of the rudimentary nature of the tuning mechanism. I hope this video helps! Thanks for the comment ☺️
My A String on the violin broke in school after turning the peg too much, but before when it was slipping I used this video to fix it. Thank you so much for this video
Thanks for this!! I kind of did this informally with my violin and students’ violins because once you get the string in the peg’s hole, I like it to be tightly and evenly wound. And I’ve also seen people wind strings unevenly and overlapping, and then when it’s time to change them, it’s wrapped and tangled and seems overwhelming to have to unwind and change strings without pliers. But I never knew that pushing the peg in was going to over time change the shape of the pegbox’s holes🙉 thanks so much! I’m gonna be more careful with this from now on.
Thank you, absolutely brilliant! Can't believe it worked so easily. Man, I love the internet, you can find fixes for every single problem lol. Thank you!
Awesome! I just bought a Viola for my wife for Christmas and I had to bring her along to make sure it was short enough for her to play it before I bought it for her. We were in the music store and one of the pegs kept jumping out of tune. The salesman gave her some "Peg Drops" to help keep it from slipping and that seems to have worked. She got it tuned up and it stayed in tune. This looks like a better solution than putting something liquid on the Viola.

I almost gave up, but just watched you video and it works perfectly. Thank you! Now to figure out where all the notes are....
This trick is awesome. I recently bought a new violin, and every string needed this. The E5 string took me 6 tries to get it not to slip, but that's probably a mix between me not doing something right and it being a new string. Thanks for making this video!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! All of my pegs kept slipping mostly E and A and these prevented me fr9m playing because I was scared to break them. This really helped me engage back to practising violin! Thank you , may god bless you ❤
THANK YOU SO MUCHHH! My e string has been slipping for 6 months now and i havent been able to play it as i wasnt sure how to fix it without damaging it. Thought it broke! This was extremely helpful.
Years ago I bought a used violin for cheap and was never able to play it because of slipping pegs, until now! I'll have to try this, I thought I'd never be able to play it. Thank you!
This is.... genius. I need to go try it. I'd been having such an impossible time with my violin once I moved to a really dry place. It became completely unplayable, so... I gave up. The music store people kept just telling me "just use rosin on it" and brushed me off without any instruction on doing that. And like maybe that might have helped, but this also makes sense, and doesn't involve me disassembling my violin. Now I'm extra grumpy about how they treated me knowing this was possible and they just neglected to say anything and ignored me. I haven't played in almost a decade because of that experience.
@@KennedyViolins yes thank you! It worked like a charm for the first 3 strings. The only stubborn one is the e string, which was the worst offender in the past too. I will probably have to try the rosin on it too and combine with the winding technique to see if that does the trick finally. Here's hoping!
@yayrayday Yes, the E string is always the most difficult. You just have to make sure that you wind it as much as possible against the scroll box wall and push in a little harder. It should work just fine. It's just that the E string is thinner, so it's a little more difficult to create the "wedge effect" against the side of the scroll box.
Wow thank you so much ! As a beginner, I broke 2 strings trying to fix this without knowing what I was doing wrong. Just tried it on another peg I had issue with and it works like a charm now :)
Our luthiers use this technique when winding the strings during the setup of all our instruments! Due to humidity/temperature changes, our instruments often experience some slipping upon arrival to the customer, but following this video to rewind the pegs should take care of it!
Just found this video!! for 30 mins. trying to tune my violin this morning and the pegs were slipping driving me nuts late for work and fingers hurting trying to get it tuned. Just found this video!!! I will try this method. Thanks for the info.
Dude thank you so much I have to play at my cousins wedding and I got my violin out (I haven't played in 6 months) and I was tuning and I got this issue and I almost had a panic attack but now it's fixed thank you do much man, love from australia
Thank you so much for posting this video! I was so irritated that my violin would not tune properly. I did exactly what you said and now its perfect! I had tried recommended methods to correct the problem of slipping pegs and none worked. I'm so glad I didn't continue repeating these methods because I would've ruined a good violin!
You are amazing. I've started lessons a month ago, so I literaly now nothing about violins. I had completely no idea about this trick and I was thinking that something was wrong. Thank you!
Bless you! Thank you for explaining succinctly what probably is the number one reason violins go out of tune overnight. Does this work on all string materials or only on gut? Will sure try this tip out . Again many thanks.😅
Hi there, thanks for the positive comment! Yes, this method works for all string instruments and all string materials. It's just the mechanics of the peg and scroll box that make all the difference. Of course, with a cello, you'll have to push in a lot harder and most basses a have different tuning mechanism, so it's basically violin Viola and cello. Thanks!
If this is a problem that has plagued violinists for hundreds of years why hasn’t anyone developed a better design? Why is the classical music world so obsessed with keeping things exactly as they were 300 years ago?
I've managed to stop the slipping after powdering the pegs with rosin and then using your method. Just using the method without rosin didn't work for me. I'm glad it did in the end. Thanks :D
Thanks, I bought a cheap violin just to try it out. Being used to tuning guitars I thought the problem was because it's a cheap violin. This is something everyone new to violins should know, seen a bunch of tuning videos for beginners but none mentioned this problem.
Thanks, just got mine for Christmas, been working at it all day and was about to call the music store and say my violin was broken, glad it wasn't and I'm glad I didn't have to use glue or something! :D
Gonna try this in the morning with my new to me super cheap violin. I figured out that the guy who sold it to me put the E and A on the wrong pegs and when I was tuning it, I popped the bridge twice! I have to swap those out tomorrow and if I can't win with your method, it's off to the local music shop for peg drops! Hoping you have a vid on rosining the bow.
THANK YOU SO MUUCH!! I haven't picked up my Stradivarius since 2019 and this was soooo helpful!! I did all the pegs. I was so anxious but it's perfect now!!!

My fiddle mentor put rosin on a slipping peg. Since he is strong, he caused the peg to break with a spiral fracture, because the rosin caused the peg to seize up, instead of turn (rotate). Now we know the correct solution to the "slippery issue".. Thanks so much.
I just want to say Thank You. Violin is not an instrument I feel too comfortable with but I am in charge of making sure 40 of them are in tune for our students, and I was ready to smash a few today. Your video solved all my problems!!!!

Glad it worked out. Since you just started out, you may have other questions so just let me know. Happy practicing! 👍
Years ago I bought a used violin for cheap and was never able to play it because of slipping pegs, until now! I'll have to try this, I thought I'd never be able to play it. Thank you!
It'll work!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Didn’t want to put peg drops on my brand new cello! Love you!
Glad I could help!
This is....
Oh no!! Well, I'm glad you saw this video and with a little practice, you'll be able to get your violin tuned soon enough!
This video truly helped!!!! I'm a newbie so fixing slipped pegs is such an accomplishment hahaha 💪🙌
Wow thank you so much ! As a beginner, I broke 2 strings trying to fix this without knowing what I was doing wrong. Just tried it on another peg I had issue with and it works like a charm now :)
Super awesome! I love to save strings. They have feelings you know...
Help me, I’ve done it 3 times and it’s still slipping. my E string sounds like my A string. I have even taken the string off and put it back on
Put some resin on the peg
This is a better solution than applying chalk to the pegs. Thanks for the video!
Cool it really helped me on the peg and thanked I wish you a happy day!!!
Glad I could help! Happy practicing. :)
It took me a few tries, but it worked for me! Thank you!
Sweeeeet...
When I buy my violin from you guys will the violin strings have already been adjusted so the pegs won't slip just like in The video?
Our luthiers use this technique when winding the strings during the setup of all our instruments! Due to humidity/temperature changes, our instruments often experience some slipping upon arrival to the customer, but following this video to rewind the pegs should take care of it!
Just found this video!! for 30 mins. trying to tune my violin this morning and the pegs were slipping driving me nuts late for work and fingers hurting trying to get it tuned. Just found this video!!! I will try this method. Thanks for the info.
OMG.... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! THIS IS A LIFE SAVER!!! IT SRSLY HELPED!!!
Super cool. Glad I could help! Happy practicing :)
Dude thank you so much I have to play at my cousins wedding and I got my violin out (I haven't played in 6 months) and I was tuning and I got this issue and I almost had a panic attack but now it's fixed thank you do much man, love from australia
SWEET, so glad to hear stories like this. This is why I create vids. Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks for this video!!! You saved me time and trouble! Truly appreciated!
Glad I could help Cheryl! It's such an easy fix and hopefully the word will get spread and more people will know. Happy practicing!
This isn't working for me 😭
You are amazing. I've started lessons a month ago, so I literaly now nothing about violins. I had completely no idea about this trick and I was thinking that something was wrong. Thank you!
Flattery will get you everywhere!
Broke my string because the peg kept slipping 🤠 and I need this string in a few days time 🤠
Oh no no nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
As a person that tunes uke, piano, guitar and bass I’m wondering this exact same question
I've managed to stop the slipping after powdering the pegs with rosin and then using your method. Just using the method without rosin didn't work for me. I'm glad it did in the end. Thanks :D
Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks so much, that worked great!
This worked to tighten the peg on my daughters violin, thank you for making this video!
Glad to help!
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, I bought a cheap violin just to try it out. Being used to tuning guitars I thought the problem was because it's a cheap violin. This is something everyone new to violins should know, seen a bunch of tuning videos for beginners but none mentioned this problem.
What if it’s a string in the middle
No idea if I should have but I used a pair of tweezers to push the string to the side of the pegbox, kept it nice and tight to the sides.
This was the perfect fix! Took 4/5 times to get it right but once it was fixed it stay fixed!
Awesome! Glad it worked.
Thanks for the video, it helped a bunch! cx
Thanks, just got mine for Christmas, been working at it all day and was about to call the music store and say my violin was broken, glad it wasn't and I'm glad I didn't have to use glue or something! :D
Ty so muchh
Gonna try this in the morning with my new to me super cheap violin. I figured out that the guy who sold it to me put the E and A on the wrong pegs and when I was tuning it, I popped the bridge twice! I have to swap those out tomorrow and if I can't win with your method, it's off to the local music shop for peg drops! Hoping you have a vid on rosining the bow.
I got ya covered!
This is driving me crazy
Extreamly helpful......
I have no word........
And I don't even know....how can I thank you
You just did!
I am very scared to do this in fear my hands will break the whole string 💀
I did it and 2 of my strings broke.. so I’m going back to the music store to have it fix
Esp E string
Same, I was terrified, but it worked lol
THANK YOU SO MUUCH!! I haven't picked up my Stradivarius since 2019 and this was soooo helpful!! I did all the pegs. I was so anxious but it's perfect now!!!

Glad we could help!
Kennedy Violins . The clouds parted and the angels began to sing. :)
My fiddle mentor put rosin on a slipping peg. Since he is strong, he caused the peg to break with a spiral fracture, because the rosin caused the peg to seize up, instead of turn (rotate). Now we know the correct solution to the "slippery issue".. Thanks so much.
Glad to help and thanks for letting me know! 👍
I just want to say Thank You. Violin is not an instrument I feel too comfortable with but I am in charge of making sure 40 of them are in tune for our students, and I was ready to smash a few today. Your video solved all my problems!!!!
