But Negan is not only one of the best written if not the best written character in the show but he's compelling, charismatic, badass and the best antagonist of the show. I will admit that it's hard to fully understand his motivation if you haven't read the comic that reveals his entire backstory. But honestly Negan is the best thing to happen to the show since the show didn't have a real antagonist since The Governor. Even if you don't appreciate the character you can at least admit that the show was without a doubt better with him in it and that it would've been worse without him.

Jason Patterson From interviews he has talked about how at that point he was pretty disillusioned by acting and was considering quiting. I don't think the Daryl Dixon role was even intended to last more than a couple of episodes but he took the role and ran with it. It was literally written for him after he came in for an audition. I'm always surprised when people say he can't act. For me he doesn't even need words. He can say more with how he is holding his shoulders than many actors can with multiple lines of dialog.
Yeah I'm pretty sure TWD was considered a totally absurd concept at the time and not expected to do well at all as people thought no one would watch a show all about killing zombies. I've also heard rumours (i think its true without checking now on google) that Daryl was going to be killed off pretty early on (s1 i think) but he resonated so much with the fans that they knew he had to be kept on.
