About the AFI Life Achievement Award:
The highest honor given for a career in film, the AFI Life Achievement Award was established by the AFI Board of Trustees in 1973. Denzel Washington will receive the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award, celebrating his life and work. The special will air on TNT on Thursday, June 20, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, followed by an encore at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT. Sister network Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will also air the special in September, during a night of programming dedicated to Washington's work.

Goddammit, that entire movie production of "He Got Game" never, ever receives its due. From Ray Allen's literally out-of-nowhere acting performance, Spike Lee's inimitable filmmaking style, to DENZEL. fking. WASHINGTON's singular on-screen power only he can deliver -- this movie needs to be recognized for the multi-dimensional and impactful achievement it is. It's not a basketball movie, sports, movie, character study, it's a compendium of all of those things that make it one of the great and transcendant movie of the 1990s.
America is a great nation because of the choices its citizens have made in the interest of individualism and humanity. With understanding and humility, we have instilled great morals and policies that reward choices in the effort to better one another. Striving to climb the ladder of freedom, we have drawn the eyes of the world.Though the ladder is unstable, the way to balance it is to keep climbing. We must explore for the next step of the ladder, find that choice, the opportunity to become better people. We should dismiss the steps that only make us look better or feel better. Avoid the steps that compare, blame, and measure. In the endeavor to find the right steps, we must reach deep within ourselves. The unique individual who truly loves freedom will find the right step and the ladder will stabilize.
