Chadwick Boseman pays tribute to Denzel Washington at the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award on June 6, 2019 at the Dolby Theatre. In this clip, Boseman: “there is no BLACK PANTHER without Denzel Washington. And not just because of me. My whole cast, that generation, stands on your shoulders.” AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO DENZEL WASHINGTON aired on June 20, 2019 on TNT. Sister network Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will air the special in October 2019, during a night of programming dedicated to Washington’s work.
Other presenters at the event included Mahershala Ali, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Antoine Fuqua, Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, Michael B. Jordan, Issa Rae, and Cicely Tyson and many others who all paid tribute to Washington's life and work.
Additional guests included Ed Begley, Jr., W. Everything he said resonates so much harder knowing it’s coming from a man who knows his time is limited. It’s the words of wisdom from a man who can find the most satisfaction in his remaining days saying what needs to be said in a world he will soon be leaving. He understood things with a different perspective and angle than most ever will.

He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2016. So it was constantly on his mind. He just made sure he had the team and medical team that helped him produce a physique for each of his films.
God used Denzel Washington to get him the funding he needed to attend the classes. See , God will make a way when there seems to be no way. All we have to do is ask him. And then trust him to do what we have asked him for.

Even then .... Denzel knew. He knew..... he knew what was going on with Chadwick Boseman. His eyes told me he knew the battle Boseman was fighting. It was so clear to see in his eyes. In his heart I have no doubt Denzel knew he was watching a King in his own right, fighting a fierce battle and yet selfless in his praise and admiration and thanks for all that Denzel had done for him....enabling Boseman to become the King. The tears were there in his eyes....and in his heart I know Denzel knew that the accolades he received that night truly belonged to the young man honoring him....Denzel's eyes honored that young man. I have no doubt Denzel felt fortunate,... blessed even,... that he had the opportunity to fulfill a dream of a talented young man....with the heart and strength and courage...of a King. This was Denzel's night to be sure...but his eyes also said... it would never be his alone. God bless both these great men.
