  • I find it necessary to change the Transmission and Differential oil on any used car I've ever gotten. Although it probably wasn't necessary on this car due to mileage and condition, it sure feels good to know for sure it's been changed and is new.

    Tip for doing diff plugs with low clearance. Use your socket and a box wrench on the hex side.

    Man I miss my E36...(SMG swapped 328is not an M3) but this reminded me about how straight forward everything used to be on a BMW and I think I'm going to put a new engine in her to get her going again. Thank you sir!

    Hey Matt, Nice job awesome to have a lift it’s been my experience that the dif fluid stays much cleaner than the trans fluid so that’s probably never been changed but then again who knows for sure also maybe the next time around after draining the fluid pump about a quarter quart in before putting in the drain plug and push out the last of the old fluid you’d be surprised how much actually is still in there it only adds a couple minutes to the job not quite a full flush but a quick flush lots of great videos keep them coming and have a good one.

    My ZF box wasn't bad, but with new oil it kept getting better over the course of perhaps three years (and around 12k miles) until it came to the point where it is today. I've seen others report the same odd behaviour.

    ECS Tuning sells a BMW driveline wrench that has the 14mm allen for those plugs and also a 17mm 6 point hex. It works awesome!

    Matt, your E36 is looking great. Your attention to detail is phenomenal . Don’t listen to the critics. BMW bro’s can be an odd bunch. I lived in Orlando about 6 years ago, and had a beautiful E39 530i sport package with a manual trans. My ride and I were not considered cool by the local BMW clergy because I didn’t have a 2002 or a E30 M3. To sum, I guess I am trying to say, consider the sources !

    Lol I remember Matt gave away his engine hoist and hydraulic press because they were harbour freight. But for something that you store away and only use it once very couple of years, I would just keep them. Heck, I removed the harbour freight stickers and ceramic coated them and they look better than snap ons

    Yellow paint isn’t a good indication that the bolts haven’t been touched before. The yellow paint still shows on my e36 m3. I’ve changed the fluid many times - owned the car for 10 years and it has ~125k miles.

    Noticed on your transmission drain plug there are some threads remaining after torquing down? Is this normal? On my car the plug is threaded all the way in. But it looked like you got yours to the right torque without needing to seat the threads all the way in... just wondering if thats normal for when I change my fluid

  • @jamesrobinson1579
    @jamesrobinson1579 2 года назад

    Just questioning your diff fluid choice... I think you said straight gear oil but the M3 is limited slip and needs either "friction modifier" additive or a fluid specified for LSD...
    You can easily add some of the LSD modifier... You don't want to lose the lockup.

    • @pnum9618

    I'd think the dry ice machine will be extremely useful when mounting and balancing tires. Figure out where the new weights go, mark it, drice it, stick the new weights on, coat the area, done.

    First off I want to say I love the Channel, but nobody except you and I are as crazy about making sure everything is up to "OG Spec" and change all the fluids when they get a car. So at 36,000 miles i bet nobody has ever replaced those fluids.

    • @bcastromusic
      @bcastromusic 2 года назад

      Huh. I think most bmw owners change fluids when they get car regardless of miles. I’ve had my m3 for 20 years. I changed transmission fluid at 45k, 67k, 100k, and 134k. About the same for diff but have also swapped in other diff back and forth few times. As a crazy owner I still want to see under his transmission, rear subframe and under that fuel filter cover among other things… pretty sure I got him beat in the obsessed cleanliness ;)
