"you can hear the stereo better"...please, for those of us who go out to enjoy the marine setting and who are not interested in whose got the loudest stereo in the competition for volume or in discovering a new playlist, stay onboard your vessel and listen at reasonable levels. Go ashore to go ashore not listen to your music from 20 yards away. Allow the the right to quite enjoyment.

Yeah, I think that's a move the younger captains make, with the loud tunes. I was much more interested in making sure that everybody within 10 miles of my boat would enjoy my music when I was 25. Not so much at 55
Who cares about the stereo really.
Good descriptive video. One suggestion is to limit the amount of anchor rode which extends into the channel. Some beaches have lots of boats running up and down and most of the boaters do not look for underwater anchor lines.

This is good IF you can get the bow anchor to hold. Where I'm from it's all sand and usually a slight current so this method won't work. For me the best way is to drift in stern first and secure stern anchor on the beach. I then take the bow anchor and also run it up to the beach on the side against the current.

Drop forward anchor at depth...reverse towards shore..have 2nd person carry stern anchor ashore and drop on beach..tighten up all lines...done!!

We can't recommend backing toward the beach for three reasons: safety, convenience, and avoiding damage to the outboard or sterndrive.
Where we boat, the beach is often crowded, so backing propeller first toward shore could endanger swimmers.
Second, we like the convenience of getting off the boat directly ashore. It's easier to pass gear to someone on dry land and our guests don't have to get wet just to go ashore.
Lastly, backing down puts you at risk of bumping bottom if you can't see it or don't know the waters well. Nothing will destroy your water pump's impeller and wear-plate faster than sucking up sand.
So while it's an extra step to drop everyone off first and then flip around, we think the advantages are worth the little bit of hassle.
Leave your guests at the ramp if they don't want to get wet.
Yea backing down on the beach is much less work. Sure you can go too far and dig the props into the sand. Just don't go that close and try to avoid drinking. That should help with distance judgement.
Neither is necessary. Drop your anchor, kill the engines and drift in. Before you get too shallow, tie off the bow anchor. Jump in and pull the stern anchor to the beach and have everyone unload from the stern. If you beach often in the same spot, pre-tie the anchor lines.

If you had a windless with a wireless remote you wouldn't need to swim to and from the boat, put out more length at the bow and then use the stern anchor to pull the boat in.
If you're fortunate to have a windlass and wireless remote, go ahead. The boat shown in the video did not have a windlass of any sort, which is why we show lowering the anchor and rode hand over hand.
The moment that you have to worry about not getting the rope cut in the propeller that is the moment when you should stop doing that. This is an advanced maneuver if you ask me. if you have two engines just rotate the boat drop anchor and back up a bit to gain momentum. after that neutral until it grabs and you are done with the front. then set the back and pull on the front a bit and you are 100% set. That way there is no risk of getting the rope on the prop

Thanks for the great question, Ron. Probably not specifically for this purpose, though if you keep the second anchor on board for anchoring in different bottoms, you’d probably want it to have chain.
Looks like a easy job made hard. Since you have to carry the stern anchor to set why not back the boat toward the beach with the bow anchor already on the bottom and set. Drop the stern pull forward a little and its set. Unload from the stern which is lower to the water. As we say in the South, "Two ways to skin a Cat"!
Thanks for watching, John. We don't recommend backing toward a beach, particularly when it is crowded, for safety reasons. Sucking sand into the engine is another reason to avoid it. And if you're trying to squeeze in between other boats, as is typical on holiday weekends, you have way, way more control coming in forward, rather than trying to back down. We see it happen all the time. We also like unloading off the bow because it means only one person has to get wet.

Thanks for your comment. This set up does require you and your guests to wade out to the swim ladder when it’s time to go. My boat has a fixed swim ladder, rather than a telescoping or hinged model, so I’m stuck leaving it at least waist deep. IF your boat doesn’t have a fixed ladder, it would be possible for one person to go aboard and let out anchor rode while someone on the beach pulled the transom of the boat into shallower water. After everyone and the gear are loaded up, the last person aboard would bring the stern anchor up, and then you would use the bow anchor rode to pull the boat to deep water, lower the engines, and finish pulling the anchor before setting off.

Why not go bow out from the beach, drop the bow anchor and back into the beach? Turn the engine off, jump off the stern with the stern anchor for the beach? Less chance of fouling lines on the prop and scraping chain along the hull. I always like to go to the sandbar at the bottom of the tide so conditions always get better.
Always a great question! Backing in makes it likely you'll suck silt and sand into your outboard. By going in bow-first, you'll be more likely to avoid a call to TowBoatUS to get home.

Dropping the anchor and not setting the anchor? Did the anchor penetrates the bottom? If not, when the wind kicks up what happens? Your boat bangs into my boat. I would set the anchor first. When that is done, let additional rode out to meet the beach. Then continue with your scenario.

why not just drop the first anchor in the front, then slowly reverse towards the beach, and when you reach trim up the engines, tie the boat to another rope that you will take with you as you jump in the water to get to the beach, then tie the other end of the rope there or anchor it?
A couple reasons. If you have an outboard, you could damage your engine and/or prop by hitting a submerged object or sucking up sand or other debris. Also, it could be dangerous if there are swimmers in the water.

Thanks for the great question, Steve. Basically, when it comes time to leave, the process is reversed. The stern anchor is retrieved first and placed back aboard. Then the boat can be pulled forward on the bow anchor into deeper water where the engines can then be safely started but left in neutral so that you will be ready to motor away from the beach as soon as the bow anchor is free. To do this, have a crew member pull in on the bow anchor rode until it is is straight up and down. The anchor should then break free and the crew can pull the remainder of the rode back onboard the boat. Once the crew indicates to the helmsman that the anchor is clear of the water the engine can be put in gear and the boat motored away from the beach.

Hello, i would like to ask why the chains of both anchors, main and secondary are so short for so big boat. As far as i know the length of the chain must be at least the length of the boat. But generally a little longer or shorter i guess its not that big deal but the chains in the video look way very short. Thank you.

For a smaller boat that’s not anchoring overnight, just a few feet of chain makes a big impact. As little as 4- to 6-feet will improve holding. If your boat has room for it, a length of chain half the length of the boat will help keep you secure overnight, and of course, if you want to drag around a longer chain and deal with it every time you raise anchor, more won’t hurt, provided the weight in the bow doesn’t impact how the boat rides.
I’m actually about to remove the chain in the video and replace it with a 5-foot length to make things more manageable for my crew. It’s a balancing act between your anchoring needs, and the impact of more chain on the boat and crew.
Thank you for the answer. I guess it depends on the weather conditions too. I dont know how the things are in your area. For example in my area and generally all over Greece (where i come from) we have squals (windstorms) that weather forcast cant predict. So its not about anchoring over night or just for a couple of hours. The forecast may say that all day the weather will be windless and in a matter of 5 minutes a windstorm to start suddenly and destroy everything. Usually it doesnt last more than 15-20 minutes and then its calm again but if you are with so short chain even in my 15 feet boat you are in huge trouble for sure. Noone likes long chains thats for sure but at sea i prefer to pull up some extra feet of chain than to see my boat crashed on the rocks. I guess every country and area have different needs. We have those unpredictable phenomenas because we have many mountains among the coast lines. Anyways, thanks again and have a good day sir.

Thank you for reaching out. You will notice that when the maneuver, as depicted in the video, is undertaken the boat initially approaches the beach bow first, the motors are raised and then the second (stern) anchor is set after which the boat can easily be rotated manually. Motoring the boat in stern to offers a very good chance of hitting the bottom with the props and doing some serious damage to the lower units. Additionally, setting two anchors allows the boat to be easily shifted as the tide comes in or goes out, preventing it from making contact with the seabed, damaging the hull.

why not pull in and beach it then anchor onto shore?with a hook anchor it should pose no problem with tide. I do it all the time with mine only I don't have tide in a lake.
I feel like this is the hardest way you can possibly do it.

The proper way to do something is not always the easiest way.
It’s way easier than getting stuck on the beach and/or sucking sand in your engine
you need one more turn on the bow cleat before you cross over the cleat.

Well, I the gulf you have waves coming up on the beach. I just point the bow out away from the beach and drop the bow anchor and back in until I like where the stern is, then tie off the bow and throw out the stern anchor and get out and pull the boat tight. I've never seen what you just showed here. It is interesting...

Agreed. You drop your bow anchor before you are anywhere near the shoreline...so you can run light reverse for at least 30-60 seconds to make sure your anchor set. Then you can add more slack to the line as you back up towards the shore with your stern anchor ready!. Set that against the current and you are set!

It's a good technique but it looks a bit cumbersome. Why not just back up the boat while letting the rode out until the anchor is set? You then can just set the stern anchor at the beach. I'm mostly concerned with letting the rode
out through the side and having to watch the propellers while turning the boat.

He did say temporarily... So maybe this is acceptable, but - otherwise this is pretty poor technique. To properly set the anchor you should motor it in.
Not to mention that eventually gel coat will over time be severely damaged by the sand costing you a fortune later.

Some exceptions on this video, YOU NEVER EVER RUN ANY PART OF YOUR BOAT ON GROUND! PERIOD! END OF STORY, That is Called GROUNDING and YOU WILL Destroy your KEEL if you dont have a Keel Guard like the boat used here! Ive seen that BS destroy keels by grinding right thru the glass! That said a 2 or 3 point anchor is correct in 3+ fsw and while this video is made to look ez pz note there is no current running, also you never want to start your engine in super shallow water -3fsw, YOU RUN THE RISK OF SUCKING UP SAND INTO YOUR IMPELLER WHEN YOU ENGAGE YOUR PROPS AND MANEUVER, thus reducing your pump life.

@@boatus guys i just tried buying my first florida boat,, i thought it would be ez,, the joke was on me,, down here and i am 60yo been on the water all my life, i have never seen so many destroyed keels in all my life, down here its like these boaters see land and head for it full speed ahead, the other recurring issue i see in florida is plastice thru hulls destroyed on every other vessel again never seen anything like it, basic maintenance on older boats is non exhistant here
Yikes! We're just finishing up an article for an upcoming issue of BoatUS Magazine about someone's journey to buy a trawler. Three contracts, three surveys, and still no boat. And this was not an inexpensive purchase. So it's not just in Florida, but as the state has the most registered boats in the country, there's a much greater likelihood of finding issues. Sounds like you are knowledgeable, but for the folks in the back, we ALWAYS recommend hiring a good surveyor before purchasing any boat and ensuring your contract has a survey clause.

Why stern to? If the tide goes out your engines will be in the shallows.
Stern to keeps the bow facing the waves to prevent swamping. Yes, the stern is in the shallows with the motors trimmed up, but all you have to do is raise the stern/beach anchor, and then use the bow anchor rode to pull the boat out to deeper water.

+Peter DelFino you should never anchor solely from the stern. It’s far too easy to swamp the boat. But using a stern anchor in addition to a bow anchor is acceptable to prevent swinging. But note, you shouldn’t use a stern anchor unless others in the anchorage or beach are also using one. If your boat isn’t swinging and others in the anchorage are, a wind shift will start knocking boats together.
On another note, the action of dragging the boat back off the beach has a similar effect to backing down and helps set the anchor. An once both the bow and stern anchors have dug in, the boat usually rests at equilibrium between the two, nicely keeping tension on both. We do this all summer long. As long as you put enough rode out on the bow anchor, the boat stays put; wind and tide shifts don’t seem to matter.
