      It's possible they're both ok. Theory I go with is Childs doesn't have breath like Macready does. Man is a mammal that is warm blooded. There was a sequel comic book that continued the story.

    • @msfeistybabe
      @msfeistybabe 2 года назад +18

      My theory has always been that Childs was one of them. When Mac came into the storeroom & had the dynamite he was covered in snow & frost everywhere on his face. He was out with others for about 45 minutes. Childs was gone for at least that long but wasn't 1/2 frozen when he found Mac and didn't act exhausted like you would think he would be freezing out in the storm and wandering lost as he said. Even if he got back to the burning buildings and was getting warm... he still should have been very cold & tired. And I think Mac was still human because he was wanting them to just rest there. He was exhausted and cold. Of course, some might say he wanted to rest because he was the Thing and just wanted Childs to either show himself as the Thing also or for both of them to freeze so that when they were found, he (Mac if he was the Thing) would then start again with the new people. Also, I love Kurt Russell and he was great as Mac... and I didn't want him to freeze to death but that would be like going to sleep. It would be better for him than to be the Thing that he fought so hard to kill while trying to save everyone!

    *THE THING THEORY*
    At the end, what could potentially give away that Childs is The Thing is the act of him drinking after MacReady. I believe that Childs would never risk being infected, even with the knowledge that he'll freeze to death soon. I think him accepting the drink, is The Thing making a mistake. As he raises the bottle to his lips, the film's ominous music kicks in, MacReady laughs. It's the first time Childs trusts him.

      I mean I'm sure this is true but really the level of gore and just yuckiness hurt this film way more than ET did. This was just not an acceptable level of gore when it came out. I can't name another film that had this level of gore that was popular or did well at the box office. Films like Halloween did really well but that has almost no blood or gore in it. Films like Friday the 13th did well but it was sort of because they were being attacked for the gore and violence and being completely panned by the critics. This movie just way ahead of its time.

    @tcarr6575 2 года назад +22

    40years later people are still debating the ending. It's deliberately left open to scare the audience and keep people talking about the movie.
    Some people think Childs is the thing and when Mac gives him the bottle to drink it's full of gasoline (that's why he laughs when Childs drinks it and doesn't react) he had just been throwing molotovs so it stands to reason the bottle wasn't full of liquor. Mac is laughing because he knows the thing wouldn't know the difference but he's too weak to fight it.
    Some people say Mac is the thing and when he hands Childs the bottle to drink he laughs because he just infected him so he too would become the thing increasing the chances it survives to make it to the mainland and infect the rest of the world.
    Some people say neither one or both of them are the thing. As an interesting side note is that a PS2 video game was made (that acts as a sequel to the movie) and Carpenter has said the game is canon - in the game both Childs and Mac survive and neither are the thing. In the game another crew shows up to fight the thing but Childs later dies and Mac saves the crew and they ultimately kill the thing.
    All depends on how you interpret it. Great video man i'm glad you did this one!

    I'm sorry for what you're about to witness. Some of us who voted for this "ain't shit." Other than one particular scene, the rest of the film is very good and something you might enjoy. It's got mystery elements to it, trying to figure out who isn't who they say they are. Almost like a murder mystery, but the murderer can take you over and make you like them in a very horrific way.
    The fourth or fifth time I saw this film, my dog creeped me out a bit. I was sitting in the living room, and the scene where the Husky goes into the room and you see the shadow of a person. Right at that moment, my dog stands up and walks right up to me and just stares at me for a full minute. It was just a really weird moment because he never acted like that before or after. I was around 14 or 15 then. So this film always reminds me of him, his name was Toby, and he passed away October 19th 2004. Haven't been able to own a pet since then, don't want to have to deal with the loss. It's just too difficult.

They aren't interchangeable and are not to be replaced like a new cell phone. They are all individuals and definitely a part of our lives. And the loss is devastating. I've lost many dogs through the years and a few cats as well. But I could never give up the years I get to spend with them and every time I lose one... it doesn't take me long before I feel like I need another one with me. Right now I have 4 Yorkie-Poos. The mom & dad didn't have any babies for years and finally, the mom said ok to the dad & we got one litter of 4 adorable babies. I couldn't keep them all so we gave 2 away to friends that didn't have any pets. One man had lost his wife the year before and giving him one of the baby girls seemed to be exactly what he needed at the time. So now our "puppies" are 4 years old and their furry mom is 11 and their furry dad is 12. So I know within a few years at the most I will lose their mom & dad to old age if I'm lucky and don't lose them sooner. I just pray that it's not on Christmas day (like the furry boy I had before these 4) and not in the month of September which is when my parents both died 13 years apart within 2 days of each other.

      I understand completely...it was 2016 when my last companion passed and I don't know if I'll get over holding her as it happened...yes it hurts so bad that the thought of losing another is horrific...also I'm old..I fear what would become of them if I passed first...
      I console myself by helping strays and pet sitting occasionally...

    The effects are so good in this. It's all practical effects, and in many ways makes it more real. They have to rely on other things, like sound effects, suspense, eerie music and general atmosphere to create fear (and grossness).

    Just to address a few questions:
    "When did the Thing get Palmer?"
    In the beginning we see the dog-Thing wander through the camp unattended, and pass into a room where someone unknown to us turns to look. We only see their shadow. This was probably Palmer. After infection the Palmer-Thing spends most of his time trying to turn the group against itself, accusing Windows of being the Thing and trying to get everyone to kill MacReady.
    "Who got to the blood?"
    When Windows and Bennings are in the room with the remains of the Thing, Windows leaves to get the keys from Garry. He returns and sees Bennings being assimilated, and we hear a jingling sound - Windows dropping the keys on the floor as he runs away. Since Palmer has almost certainly been assimilated now, he's probably the one who recovered the keys and destroyed the whole blood. Norris might also be a Thing at this point but seems less likely due the nature of his transformation.
    "Why did Norris die?"
    His infection seemed to happen more slowly than the others, so it's likely it was a very small amount of contact. Maybe Palmer touched him for a second - long enough for skin cells to flake off of his hand and infect Norris. If it Norris was only being assimilated a piece at a time rather than all at once the process might have killed hom as his organs shut down one by one. Or, the process of copying might have been so perfect that the Thing copied Norris' heart problems and it simply had a heart attack.
    "When did Blair become the Thing?"
    Best guess is when he was captured either Palmer or Norris touched him. He may have realized he was changing and tried to hang himself but was too late. It is also possible that he was infected during his rampage and was being influenced to isolate the camp so the Thing could take over everyone.
    "How could Blair build a spaceship out of helicopter and generator parts?"
    I know it looked like a flying saucer but a likelier answer is that he was building something like a hovercraft, just to get to the nearest research station.
    "Are both Childs and MacReady the Thing?"
    The fourth option, almost always overlooked. We don't actually know if Things are aware of one another or if they're all cooperating with each other. The Palmer-Thing has no problem pointing out the escaping head-spider-Thing to everyone. It is possible that both survivors are infected by movie's end, each one waiting to infect the other as they freeze.

      It's also possible that those who are infected by the thing do not even realize they are, essentially Manchurian agents. The host acts 100% like they normally would, including any desire to destroy the thing. Meanwhile, the thing remains dormant in the infected host, consciously waiting for the right moment to take action.

      Another solution to the blood being destroyed: The Thing doesn't need a key. It's a refrigerator with rubber seal, all it has to do is grow a thin appendage to bypass the seal and that appendage can also grow something to function in the dark and cut the blood bags. The keys aren't needed.

    BTW, you kept saying while watching that you would have been gone, but there would have been nowhere to go. They were in the middle of Antarctica, a totally inhospitable continent with subzero temperatures, and massive snow storms, thousands of miles from any other continent. And at the beginning it was even mentioned that they hadn't been able to contact anyone outside their camp for the last 2 weeks. So even if they had abandoned the camp to get away from the Thing, there would have been nowhere to go, and no one to rescue them before they froze to death. That's what was so scary about their situation. They were totally isolated, and trapped with nowhere safe to escape to.

I do kind of feel bad that we made you want to kill the puppies, but who would generally suspect a "harmless" puppy??
    I do also enjoy the incidental score which, at the end come back just before the credits, which has been there many times during Thing, and it is meant to be an open ending, to give discussion. I have thought about Kurt Russel using the whiskey in the beginning when pouring into the chessmaster, and then it comes back at the end, questioning Childs as possible Thing.
