Actually, in the 70s and early 80s movies "went there" way more often than now. Movies now are safe. This movie wouldnt be made in 2022, no way. There was a grittiness to life in 1973 that doesnt exist now. I hear you but forget "disturbing images", there was an aspect of life that was more disturbing that allowed this movie to be made and released for public consumption.
On a date, I saw this in a theater around Halloween 2000 when they released the version “you’ve never seen”. Afterwards, we had to walk back home, just a few blocks, at night. The girl I was with was cracking up at how scared I was. Looking back, I can smile about it but I’ve never been so shook by a movie that It had me ready to run like hell back home. Still, an amazing experience I’ll never forget.
My mother saw the movie when it was released in 1973 and she said there were 4 nuns who came to watch the movie, and at the end of the show a group of people were so freaked out they begged the nuns to escort them on the dark walk home., which they did. My mother also said a lot of people were taking the little Gideon bibles that were being handed out just outside the theater exit.
The imagery is still disturbing even by today's standards. I know Linda Blair isn't actually doing that to herself from the special features, but still it looks convincing. What she's doing is putting the crucifix into a box between her legs with movie blood, and at her age at that time, she said she had no clue what masturbation was.
The interesting thing is that it shocks people even today - 50 years later - after we’ve all been used to blood and gore for decades. Even reactors who may have been joking about while watching the movie suddenly change in that scene.

Even Terrifier 2 didn't shock me, Exorcist was a supernatural horror with an extremely creepy atmosphere, however the first time I ever watched it yes extremely scary and shocking, but after the first time ,the edge and shock wares off.

My dad saw this in the theater, when it came out. Mind you, he was also an adult then. He came home afterward, went to go to bed, and stepped on a loose board, and the closet door opened, and he jumped from the doorway all the way to his bed and under the covers.

I was going thru Marine Corps boot camp when this movie opened. Never heard any of the hype & missed out on anything in the news. So imagine being dragged into a theater that was still showing it several month later. The BEST overall movie-going experience I've ever had in my 67 years on this planet.

The "spider walk" down the stairs scene was actually omitted from the theatrical version, because they couldn't successfully hide the wires that helped her get down the stairs like that. In 2000, the movie's original director's cut version received a haul over, and the wires were erased, allowing for that scene to be added back in.
Thanks for that trivia. Rewatching several times, I think you can see where a wire was attached to the gal's "pajama top". If I'm not mistaken, it appears that the material, where the wire was attached, pulls the material a bit.

I saw it along with thousands of others in the original theatrical version. We saw it on home-video for decades later. I have two VHS tapes (one recorded from HBO over TV in 1980 or 1981) with the spiderwalk, and the first two DVDs in the late '90s and early 2000s had it. None of those distinguished "dir cut".
I begged my parents to take me to see this. I was only 10 and they were like heck no. They went to see it and dropped me off at my sisters house. When I finally watched it some years later I had to seriously thank them for not giving in and leaving me with my sister.😂😂
You really were lucky. I was 11 and went to see it with my girlfriend, her mom and her sister. It scared the living shit out of me and I was traumatized for years afterwards.
Hats off to Mercedes McCambridge who voiced Pazuzu. The physical regiment she put herself through to get her voice to sound like that was amazing. She originally wasn't credited for providing the voice but after much legal wrangling, she was finally given a credit. You'd think this film would've been a lock to win a best special effects Oscar, but for some reason, the Academy left out the category that year. Talk about getting robbed.

It definitely would have won Visual effects. "JAWS" would have won too. Maybe the shark effects are slightly rough in a few scenes for a modern audience, in '75 they were TOP-TIER!but the category wasn't recognized that year either??
The makeup on Father Merrin is so freaking good. Max Von Sydow was like, our ages, when he did this movie, and they aged him up so convincingly I didn't know it until years later, when I saw him as the Three Eyed Raven in Game of Thrones. I thought "Damn, he looks just the same as he did in 1973!", but that just shows what a good job the 1973 makeup department did. They made him look just like he ended up looking much later in life.
I'm 55 now. I was like 15 when I watched the movie the first time, but when I saw that actor in The Force Awakens I couldn't understand how this old man was still making movies, thinking he should have been like 100 years old 😅
I like to freak people out (if they don't know about the age make up), by telling them to compare him in 1973, in the Exorcist, to him in 1993, in Needful Things, in which he plays the devil and looks 20 years younger, 20 years later.

True horror. Not a few jumps scares and gore that you forget about within hours like most horror movies since the 80s. This movie affects you for life. It is really disturbing.
Something really disturbing to me about the film is how small it makes me feel because it breaks the illusion of control we as adults are supposed to have. The fear of losing a loved one is huge for me. The film makes you watch as two pretty well put together folks lose their most precious family members.
I’ve seen this quite a few times. It’s definitely one of the scariest movies I’ve seen but it’s also very good. Everyone always talks about how frightening it is, but there’s one thing that always grabs me more than the fear. I’m always left with feelings of being very moved by the commitment of Fr Karras and Fr Merrin in the face of something so terrifying. Like Karras overcoming the tormented guilt over his mother and Merrin literally was just unwavering and just kept going 100% until his body gave out. At the end, they gave up everything to help that little girl. I’m honestly not religious, but that’s the feeling I walk away with after watching.
I never laughed so hard. I've seen this movie so many times it makes me laugh when watching people on edge watching this movie. Jay trying to keep his nerves in control. This is priceless.
That was the absolute best reaction to this movie I've seen! This is how people in the theaters reacted; so disturbed from a variety of things this movie put right out there, in your face, nothing held back! They couldn't pause a thing tho, so just left, or dealt with it. The Exorcist lures you in with its slow burn then hits you with progressively more disturbing angles to ones individual sensibilities; attacking with the grossout, shocking language and actions. That factor amped to 11 as it comes from such a young innocent girl. It makes you think bad thoughts because you must decide if you should help her, abandon her, or end her. Regardless, the overall effect is that by the end you feel emotionally and physically drained, just washed out. Then it gets dark outside....and you have to turn out the light and face the quiet sometime... .
I absolutely agree. Maybe other people don't see the buildup of the plot in this movie. And then we see where the evil ends up, a young girl with a ouija board.

My husband was three years old when his parents went to see this in the theater. It freaked them out so much, later that night, they heard a deep laugh coming from hub's bedroom and both were too scared to check. The house they lived in had many strange things happen in it, so there's that too....
I went with a friend to see it in college and I love scary movies, but this scared the piss out of me. On the walk back to the dorm we heard coyotes howling. Nightmares that night.

It's interesting how differently people consume movies. EOM was focused so much much on "Listen...listen...listen...Get up outta the house" and the extreme visuals and such of the movie. When i first saw it, i was so much more affected by the mother. The performance she gave, expressing the utter anguish and complete feeling of helplessness broke my heart. And i still appreciate it every time i see the film.

This is still disturbing nearly 50 years later- I can't imagine how people must have felt in the seventies when they saw this. An incredibly well made film that's always freaked me out (I live in the UK and this was actually banned for many years). Also, if you haven't seen scary movie 2 it spoofs it brilliantly
Max Von Sydow was only in his mid 40’s when he starred in this movie, but the makeup job was excellent because they made him look ‘nearly’ the same as he did when he reached his 70’s. 👍
When this came out, I snuck into the theater with my friend and his older brother. I was 8. It was pretty intense for a kid and I didn't sleep very well for quite a while. A year later I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I met Linda Blair in 2018 and got to talk to her for while. She was really sweet and of course I got an autographed photo of her as the demon.

My sister was same age as Regan, and remember coming home and looking in to check for demons in her room. She had a bad cold and when she answered me her voice was just like her voice in movie. Almost lost my mind. To this day can’t watch it and theme song gives me chills. Your gonna need the copilots for this one pal. Be Blessed and hug your doggies for me. I miss my little buddy so much
Linda Blair’s character, when possessed, was voiced by the late actress Mercedes McCambridge (not originally credited) as Linda Blair was only 12 when she did this film so they didn’t want to allow her to use the language.

I remember my parents coming back from watching it and they looked a bit pale. My ex-wife said when her parents saw it her mom couldn’t sleep for several days. As a side note, she is Filipina, and her mom was EXTREMELY superstitious, so this movie totally unhinged her. I guess her dad kept teasing her about it as well. 😂

The spiderwalk down the stairs was done by a stuntwoman. It was not in the original cut of the film because there were wires attached to her, and they were too noticeable. When they did this extended cut decades later, the wires were digitally removed, and the scene reinstated.

@Jon M That's the truth! People were actually throwing up and running out of the theater because they was so scared. In some cases people actually passed out! You can look it up on RUclips and find the reactions of when it was first shown in different places like California and NYC theaters and a couple other places around the country. It shows a lot of interviews from people afterwards. It also shows people being carried out of the theater who had passed out! Yeah, it was a pretty wild time because nobody had seen anything this graphic on screen. It was also a lot of protests going on back then against this movie. A lot of religious groups were saying that it was sacrilegious because of the exorcism they didn't feel that it was right to show it a so-called horror movie depiction.

I was 13 when this movie came out. My parents wouldn't even let me read the book. But just listening to theme song Tubular Bells on the radio scared me!
I bought the DVD back in the 90's and I think it was on the director commentary track they described how Mercedes McCambridge (voice of possessed Regan) was tied to a chair, smoked a pack of cigarettes, ate raw eggs, and did shots of whiskey before her vocal performance and saying the most vile stuff as little Regan. She earned her place in movie history, but for the longest time was not credited in the movie until decades after the film was released. Quite possibly one of the best reaction videos ever. You pulled it together and survived. Godspeed!

I saw this movie when I was 15 (in 1973). I've watched it every year since. It is still one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. Even if you hate it, you have to admit it's terrifying and very well done. Love your reaction! It's completely reasonable considering how realistic the movie is. When we came home that night, I waited until my sister was almost asleep, and said "Kimmy, why you do this to me?". She still gets mad at me if I bring that up.

The Exorcist is a masterclass in traditional horror films. The scariest thing is truly the viewer's own imagination. All the movie needs to do is trigger that imagination.
Some info on the movie, the fighting dogs are a foreshadowing of the eventual conflict between good (the priest) and evil (demon named Pazuzu). Pazuzu is from ancient Mesopotamia and was known as king of the demons of the wind (southwest wind) and brings famine and locusts. There’s an exhibit at the Met museum in NYC that is called beyond good and evil where they talk about him in the Epic of Gilgamesh. There’s actual clay tablets depicting him. What some don’t know is that he (Pazuzu) was actually a defender against a different entity called Lamashtu the worst of all the female demons and daughter of Anu (the god of the sky). She killed children and drank the blood of human men and ate their bodies. She’s known as “the bearer of seven names,” and described in incantations as the “seven witches.” Anu is the equivalent of “god” “Yahweh” “Allah” who is the father of benevolent and malevolent beings. The priest was taking nitroglycerin which is good for the heart. And the reason the demon showed up is because Regan decided to play with the ouija board. Her mom should’ve got her a horse to play with instead.
"Poison to fight poison." Some ancient medicines were like that. But still that guy was one demon you did not want to fuck with. So evil that other demons steered clear of him. After watching this at 13, to this very day, I will not even say his name out loud. That's just inviting bad ju-ju.

One thing that occurs in the book, but is not as clear in the film, is that when Regan begins speaking backwards and Father Karras listens back to the tape, he can clearly hear the demon saying “MERRIN!”. This was before Merrin even shows up at the house.
personally i cant watch the spinal tap scenes. freaks me out, gives me the willies. hate doctors, hate hospitals. certainly more scary than any movie ive ever seen.

My family moved into a house in 1958, in Pennsylvania outside Philly. I had just turned 5 years old. I knew immediately there was something about the house i was very afraid of. Well my feeling was NOT wrong. For the next 5 years any time i had a ringing in my ears before bed time, i knew my visitor was paying me a visit. It would start with me waking up, probably 1 or 2 am and i'd hear walking around downstairs along with a grunting sound. He would then come up the stairs, go past my bedroom, grunting the entire time, then go silent. A minute or so later, i'd hear the grunting and foot steps coming down the hall, and he'd come in my room. He would walk around grunting, then sit on my bed. This scenario would happen at least once a week for 5 years. My sister also actually saw the man. When he went past my room, he paid her a visit, at beat on her back. One day we came home from lunch, and my sister went up to use the bathroom. All the sudden my mom and i heard her screaming. She said this man came out of my parents bedroom and stood in front of the mirror making faces. This was at 12 noon.! We told our parents about it, and they wouldn't believe us. Years later i was telling my Aunt about who ever was haunting the house, and she said he was probably a run away slave who had, had his tongue cut out, and that is why he grunted.

You and I feel pretty similar about this movie. It’s more disturbing than scary to me. The actress who played the little girl has talked about some of the backlash she got from this movie. She said that people on the street were scared of her and some were pretty mean as well. You’re reactions always crack me up, and I knew this one was gonna get you in a few different places! Lol
When this came out in 73, we had to reserve tickets in advance because the theaters were full every showing. The theaters even had midnight showings on the weekends.

Props for watching this man. In my opinion not just the scariest but one of the greatest movies ever made. No joke... I watched this at a friends house without my parents permission when I was 12... it fucked me up for a year. I was convinced I was possessed. I lost friends, wasn't eating. My parents took me to multiple child psychiatrists. That was when we learned I have a pretty nasty case of OCD (mine manifests in what's called a "brain lock", where no matter what I do I can't get a thought out of my head). This shit is no joke man. Funny thing though, over the years I've come to appreciate it for what it is. I watch it about once a year now. To this day, with ALL of the modern horror classics, there still hasn't been one in my opinion that has come close to this. Love your stuff man! You seem like such a cool dude.

I love this reaction, it's so different than most of the others. And you were kind of spot on about the 'if we put a bullet in her head', because yes, she'd take it with her. It's just that it took Damien sacrificing himself once the demon came into him because he (they) were trying so hard to save Regan. My grandmother, who is devoutly Catholic, cackled her way through this entire movie at the theater, calling it nonsense until the crucifix scene. She was SUPER offended by that and doesn't even want to hear about the movie to this day because of it.
I'm not sure which would be more disturbing: watching the movie when it first came out, or hearing your grandma cackle in the theater. I'd probably be looking for a young priest and an old priest myself if I heard something cackling during a horror movie.

The significance of Reagan kissing the priest at the end when she saw his collar was to show that, even though she has suppressed her memories of what happened, part of her subconscious remembers Fr. Merrin and what he did for her.
"The Power of Christ compels you!" Fun Fact: According to William Friedkin, the subliminal shots of the white faced demon are actually rejected makeup tests for Regan's possessed appearance. Too Real Fact: Upon its initial theatrical release the film affected many audiences so strongly that at many theaters, paramedics were called to treat people who fainted and others who went into hysterics. And Scene Fact: The scene where Regan projectile vomits at Father Karras only required one take. The vomit was intended to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but the plastic tubing misfired, hitting him in the face. His reaction of shock and disgust while wiping away the vomit is genuine, and Miller admitted in an interview that he was very angered by this mistake.
Friedkin pulled a lot of nasty stunts on set, like severely injuring Ellen Burstyn's spine and filming her pained reaction, and smacking the actor playing Father Dyer across the face and filming his reaction.

I think this film was based on a boy in the 1940s, if I am not mistaken. Another film that haunted me was 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' which came out came out when I was a teen (2000s). They made a film much more along the lines of the Annalise Michaels story. It was a film that scared me, almost, as much as 'the Exorcist'. They even did a decent job not loading it wirh special effects, even of the time. It's less aggressive, in ways, than the Exorcist. Maybe add it to your list.

On a date, I saw this in a theater around Halloween 2000 when they released the version “you’ve never seen”. Afterwards, we had to walk back home, just a few blocks, at night. The girl I was with was cracking up at how scared I was. Looking back, I can smile about it but I’ve never been so shook by a movie that It had me ready to run like hell back home. Still, an amazing experience I’ll never forget.
My mother saw the movie when it was released in 1973 and she said there were 4 nuns who came to watch the movie, and at the end of the show a group of people were so freaked out they begged the nuns to escort them on the dark walk home., which they did. My mother also said a lot of people were taking the little Gideon bibles that were being handed out just outside the theater exit.
The crucifix scene is one of the most visceral scenes in movie history. No wonder people ran out of the cinema in the 70's
The imagery is still disturbing even by today's standards. I know Linda Blair isn't actually doing that to herself from the special features, but still it looks convincing. What she's doing is putting the crucifix into a box between her legs with movie blood, and at her age at that time, she said she had no clue what masturbation was.
Those people were just unfamiliar with adult toy categories.
To this very day , I don't think I've witnessed a scene from any other horror movie as bluntly far out shocking as that scene
The interesting thing is that it shocks people even today - 50 years later - after we’ve all been used to blood and gore for decades. Even reactors who may have been joking about while watching the movie suddenly change in that scene.

Even Terrifier 2 didn't shock me, Exorcist was a supernatural horror with an extremely creepy atmosphere, however the first time I ever watched it yes extremely scary and shocking, but after the first time ,the edge and shock wares off.

I was going thru Marine Corps boot camp when this movie opened. Never heard any of the hype & missed out on anything in the news. So imagine being dragged into a theater that was still showing it several month later. The BEST overall movie-going experience I've ever had in my 67 years on this planet.

The "spider walk" down the stairs scene was actually omitted from the theatrical version, because they couldn't successfully hide the wires that helped her get down the stairs like that. In 2000, the movie's original director's cut version received a haul over, and the wires were erased, allowing for that scene to be added back in.
Thanks for that trivia. Rewatching several times, I think you can see where a wire was attached to the gal's "pajama top". If I'm not mistaken, it appears that the material, where the wire was attached, pulls the material a bit.

I saw it along with thousands of others in the original theatrical version. We saw it on home-video for decades later. I begged my parents to take me to see this. I was only 10 and they were like heck no. They went to see it and dropped me off at my sisters house. When I finally watched it some years later I had to seriously thank them for not giving in and leaving me with my sister.😂😂

Hats off to Mercedes McCambridge who voiced Pazuzu. The physical regiment she put herself through to get her voice to sound like that was amazing. She originally wasn't credited for providing the voice but after much legal wrangling, she was finally given a credit. You'd think this film would've been a lock to win a best special effects Oscar, but for some reason, the Academy left out the category that year. Talk about getting robbed.

The makeup on Father Merrin is so freaking good. Max Von Sydow was like, our ages, when he did this movie, and they aged him up so convincingly I didn't know it until years later, when I saw him as the Three Eyed Raven in Game of Thrones. I thought "Damn, he looks just the same as he did in 1973!", but that just shows what a good job the 1973 makeup department did. They made him look just like he ended up looking much later in life.
I'm 55 now. I was like 15 when I watched the movie the first time, but when I saw that actor in The Force Awakens I couldn't understand how this old man was still making movies, thinking he should have been like 100 years old 😅
I like to freak people out (if they don't know about the age make up), by telling them to compare him in 1973, in the Exorcist, to him in 1993, in Needful Things, in which he plays the devil and looks 20 years younger, 20 years later.
The accuracy of the makeup with Max is great unlike what they did with Keir Dullea in Space Odyssey.

True horror. Not a few jumps scares and gore that you forget about within hours like most horror movies since the 80s. This movie affects you for life. It is really disturbing.

Something really disturbing to me about the film is how small it makes me feel because it breaks the illusion of control we as adults are supposed to have. The fear of losing a loved one is huge for me. The film makes you watch as two pretty well put together folks lose their most precious family members.

I’ve seen this quite a few times. It’s definitely one of the scariest movies I’ve seen but it’s also very good. Everyone always talks about how frightening it is, but there’s one thing that always grabs me more than the fear. I’m always left with feelings of being very moved by the commitment of Fr Karras and Fr Merrin in the face of something so terrifying. Like Karras overcoming the tormented guilt over his mother and Merrin literally was just unwavering and just kept going 100% until his body gave out. At the end, they gave up everything to help that little girl. I’m honestly not religious, but that’s the feeling I walk away with after watching.
It’s one of those movies that is disturbing, whether you are religious or not.

That was the absolute best reaction to this movie I've seen! This is how people in the theaters reacted; so disturbed from a variety of things this movie put right out there, in your face, nothing held back! They couldn't pause a thing tho, so just left, or dealt with it. The Exorcist lures you in with its slow burn then hits you with progressively more disturbing angles to ones individual sensibilities; attacking with the grossout, shocking language and actions. That factor amped to 11 as it comes from such a young innocent girl. It makes you think bad thoughts because you must decide if you should help her, abandon her, or end her. Regardless, the overall effect is that by the end you feel emotionally and physically drained, just washed out. Then it gets dark outside....and you have to turn out the light and face the quiet sometime... .
I absolutely agree. Maybe other people don't see the buildup of the plot in this movie. And then we see where the evil ends up, a young girl with a ouija board.

My husband was three years old when his parents went to see this in the theater. It freaked them out so much, later that night, they heard a deep laugh coming from hub's bedroom and both were too scared to check. The house they lived in had many strange things happen in it, so there's that too....
I went with a friend to see it in college and I love scary movies, but this scared the piss out of me. On the walk back to the dorm we heard coyotes howling. Nightmares that night.

It's interesting how differently people consume movies. EOM was focused so much much on "Listen...listen...listen...Get up outta the house" and the extreme visuals and such of the movie. When i first saw it, i was so much more affected by the mother. The performance she gave, expressing the utter anguish and complete feeling of helplessness broke my heart. And i still appreciate it every time i see the film.

Max Von Sydow was only in his mid 40’s when he starred in this movie, but the makeup job was excellent because they made him look ‘nearly’ the same as he did when he reached his 70’s. 👍

When this came out, I snuck into the theater with my friend and his older brother. I was 8. It was pretty intense for a kid and I didn't sleep very well for quite a while. A year later I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I met Linda Blair in 2018 and got to talk to her for while. She was really sweet and of course I got an autographed photo of her as the demon.

The spiderwalk down the stairs was done by a stuntwoman. It was not in the original cut of the film because there were wires attached to her, and they were too noticeable. When they did this extended cut decades later, the wires were digitally removed, and the scene reinstated.

@Jon M That's the truth! People were actually throwing up and running out of the theater because they was so scared. In some cases people actually passed out! You can look it up on RUclips and find the reactions of when it was first shown in different places like California and NYC theaters and a couple other places around the country. It shows a lot of interviews from people afterwards. It also shows people being carried out of the theater who had passed out! Yeah, it was a pretty wild time because nobody had seen anything this graphic on screen. It was also a lot of protests going on back then against this movie. A lot of religious groups were saying that it was sacrilegious because of the exorcism they didn't feel that it was right to show it a so-called horror movie depiction.

I was 13 when this movie came out. My parents wouldn't even let me read the book. But just listening to theme song Tubular Bells on the radio scared me!
I bought the DVD back in the 90's and I think it was on the director commentary track they described how Mercedes McCambridge (voice of possessed Regan) was tied to a chair, smoked a pack of cigarettes, ate raw eggs, and did shots of whiskey before her vocal performance and saying the most vile stuff as little Regan. She earned her place in movie history, but for the longest time was not credited in the movie until decades after the film was released. Quite possibly one of the best reaction videos ever. You pulled it together and survived. Godspeed!

I saw this movie when I was 15 (in 1973). I've watched it every year since. It is still one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. Even if you hate it, you have to admit it's terrifying and very well done. Love your reaction! It's completely reasonable considering how realistic the movie is. When we came home that night, I waited until my sister was almost asleep, and said "Kimmy, why you do this to me?". She still gets mad at me if I bring that up.

The Exorcist is a masterclass in traditional horror films. The scariest thing is truly the viewer's own imagination. All the movie needs to do is trigger that imagination.
The most disturbing movie ever made. JL's stomach will never be the same.
Some info on the movie, the fighting dogs are a foreshadowing of the eventual conflict between good (the priest) and evil (demon named Pazuzu). Pazuzu is from ancient Mesopotamia and was known as king of the demons of the wind (southwest wind) and brings famine and locusts. There’s an exhibit at the Met museum in NYC that is called beyond good and evil where they talk about him in the Epic of Gilgamesh. There’s actual clay tablets depicting him. What some don’t know is that he (Pazuzu) was actually a defender against a different entity called Lamashtu the worst of all the female demons and daughter of Anu (the god of the sky). She killed children and drank the blood of human men and ate their bodies. She’s known as “the bearer of seven names,” and described in incantations as the “seven witches.” Anu is the equivalent of “god” “Yahweh” “Allah” who is the father of benevolent and malevolent beings. The priest was taking nitroglycerin which is good for the heart. And the reason the demon showed up is because Regan decided to play with the ouija board. Her mom should’ve got her a horse to play with instead.

One thing that occurs in the book, but is not as clear in the film, is that when Regan begins speaking backwards and Father Karras listens back to the tape, he can clearly hear the demon saying “MERRIN!”. This was before Merrin even shows up at the house.
You really have to watch Fallen. It's not really scary, it's more of a suspense kind of movie. With great acting, Denzel Washington and John Goodman.

My family moved into a house in 1958, in Pennsylvania outside Philly. I had just turned 5 years old. I knew immediately there was something about the house i was very afraid of. Well my feeling was NOT wrong. For the next 5 years any time i had a ringing in my ears before bed time, i knew my visitor was paying me a visit. It would start with me waking up, probably 1 or 2 am and i'd hear walking around downstairs along with a grunting sound. He would then come up the stairs, go past my bedroom, grunting the entire time, then go silent. A minute or so later, i'd hear the grunting and foot steps coming down the hall, and he'd come in my room. He would walk around grunting, then sit on my bed. This scenario would happen at least once a week for 5 years. My sister also actually saw the man. When he went past my room, he paid her a visit, at beat on her back. One day we came home from lunch, and my sister went up to use the bathroom. All the sudden my mom and i heard her screaming. She said this man came out of my parents bedroom and stood in front of the mirror making faces. This was at 12 noon.! We told our parents about it, and they wouldn't believe us. Years later i was telling my Aunt about who ever was haunting the house, and she said he was probably a run away slave who had, had his tongue cut out, and that is why he grunted.

You and I feel pretty similar about this movie. It’s more disturbing than scary to me. The actress who played the little girl has talked about some of the backlash she got from this movie. She said that people on the street were scared of her and some were pretty mean as well. You’re reactions always crack me up, and I knew this one was gonna get you in a few different places! Lol

When this came out in 73, we had to reserve tickets in advance because the theaters were full every showing. The theaters even had midnight showings on the weekends.

Props for watching this man. In my opinion not just the scariest but one of the greatest movies ever made. No joke... I watched this at a friends house without my parents permission when I was 12... it fucked me up for a year. I was convinced I was possessed. I lost friends, wasn't eating. My parents took me to multiple child psychiatrists. That was when we learned I have a pretty nasty case of OCD (mine manifests in what's called a "brain lock", where no matter what I do I can't get a thought out of my head). This shit is no joke man. Funny thing though, over the years I've come to appreciate it for what it is. I watch it about once a year now. To this day, with ALL of the modern horror classics, there still hasn't been one in my opinion that has come close to this. Love your stuff man! You seem like such a cool dude.

I love this reaction, it's so different than most of the others. And you were kind of spot on about the 'if we put a bullet in her head', because yes, she'd take it with her. It's just that it took Damien sacrificing himself once the demon came into him because he (they) were trying so hard to save Regan. My grandmother, who is devoutly Catholic, cackled her way through this entire movie at the theater, calling it nonsense until the crucifix scene. She was SUPER offended by that and doesn't even want to hear about the movie to this day because of it.
I'm not sure which would be more disturbing: watching the movie when it first came out, or hearing your grandma cackle in the theater. I'd probably be looking for a young priest and an old priest myself if I heard something cackling during a horror movie.

The significance of Reagan kissing the priest at the end when she saw his collar was to show that, even though she has suppressed her memories of what happened, part of her subconscious remembers Fr. Merrin and what he did for her.

Fun Fact: According to William Friedkin, the subliminal shots of the white faced demon are actually rejected makeup tests for Regan's possessed appearance.
Too Real Fact: Upon its initial theatrical release the film affected many audiences so strongly that at many theaters, paramedics were called to treat people who fainted and others who went into hysterics.
And Scene Fact: The scene where Regan projectile vomits at Father Karras only required one take. The vomit was intended to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but the plastic tubing misfired, hitting him in the face. His reaction of shock and disgust while wiping away the vomit is genuine, and Miller admitted in an interview that he was very angered by this mistake.
Why not just tell him the whole script.
Friedkin pulled a lot of nasty stunts on set, like severely injuring Ellen Burstyn's spine and filming her pained reaction, and smacking the actor playing Father Dyer across the face and filming his reaction.
Jason Miller deserved that Academy Award for Supporting Actor. He should have won.

I think this film was based on a boy in the 1940s, if I am not mistaken.
Another film that haunted me was 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' which came out came out when I was a teen (2000s). They made a film much more along the lines of the Annalise Michaels story. It was a film that scared me, almost, as much as 'the Exorcist'. They even did a decent job not loading it wirh special effects, even of the time. It's less aggressive, in ways, than the Exorcist. Maybe add it to your list.
