    Analytics work really well in the regular season because you have a large sample which reduces significantly the Variance.
    The playoffs is more about situational Basketball than Analytics.
    In a 7 games series if you rely to much in Analytics the Variance can kill you like did with the Rockets in 2018.

    • @SkunkFarmer420
      @SkunkFarmer420 6 месяцев назад +3

      Absolutely! I definitely agree

    • @notiowegian
      @notiowegian 6 месяцев назад

      Not really, a larger % of games in the playoffs are blowouts, teams have a chance to adapt throughout a series but this happens on both sides of the ball and kind of washes out any perceived defensive advantage that playing the same team might have. ISO ball has become get swept ball, much smarter to get more shots by rebounding and getting open shots for any shooter. The big differences are that players play harder in the playoffs, give better effort while the game is still in hand, and they don't let up when they have a lead. And the series ALWAYS come down to positional match-ups, not always straight Pg vs. Pg, but where the biggest drop off in talent occurs on a particular team. The Lakers were even(slightly better) until they got down to D-Russell, Rui H. and Austin R...these three guys were substantially worse players than their counterparts...people might think D-Russell or Rui shit the bed but in reality they were going up against better players 5 straight games...this rarely happens in the regular season, and of course they got cooked. Upsets almost never happen in the playoffs, the team with the best players almost always wins, and the team with the best 5 win...makes the playoffs really boring, with injuries being the only thing that can mix it up.

    • @shepardice3775
      @shepardice3775 6 месяцев назад +18

      Exactly. Doesn't matter in the regular season where the law of averages will work in your favour over the course of 82 games. Losing a crucial game in the playoffs because you think the numbers will eventually be on your side is so dumb.

The game is still centered around who gets more easy shots in the paint, who plays better defense and who rebounds better. Go check yourself last 10 finals series. One thing I agree COMPLETELY on against the analytics 3 is sample size. 3 is worth less than 2 in a must win playoff game, point blank. Over the regular season, it's fine, hot nights will balance out cold nights, and there IS more hot/cold discrepancy when it comes to a more valuable shot with a lower FG%. It's why the Rockets missed 27 3s in a row in a single game, a game they didn't even lose that hard. That's the drawback of 3 pt shots, it's why Jokic is an absolute monster in the post season, because he only shoots good 3s, and only when he doesn't have better shots open at the rim. MPJ or Murray, the guys that they RELY on for 3s, are ALSO too good to miss 27 in a row. By relying on shots at the rim, he never misses.

      There’s layers to how great this podcast is for JJ. In the simplest sense it’s interesting and people pay attention which can be monetized…but him routinely putting his bball IQ on display is advancing him down the path towards coaching at a high level. He has expedited that process by a decade or more and I credit this. Yes he has commentated for a while but this is way more heady
      I’m not saying he’ll coach the Lakers next year….but his name being in convos is a testament to how much people respect him. Obviously the normal path is to sign on as an assistant for a big program OR coach a small obscure college team. But in the public’s mind he’s a future NBA coach….So you gotta respect it. Podcasting is creating win win scenarios for him where as most guys can’t chop it up on this level

    1:14, That is an interesting position. LeBron is the GREATEST of all time. I have always felt that what makes LeBron great is he is a student of the game, a coach on the court. Similar to Tom Brady in football. If JJ coaches the Lakers, it will be GOLD and JJ will allow LeBron to be LeBron and also add schematically a game plan that maximizes scoring from the supporting cast. JJ finding just that extra 10-15 points in addition to LeBron and AD's output would have beat Denver. If JJ was on the bench in the Denver series the Lakers would still be playing💯

    This is the wrong mindset. Probably from both sides. Players should explain why they feel they shouldnt listen, and analysts should incorporate that feedback into the analysis.
    Also very important that analysts have a basic understanding of strategy and tactics. As an analytical guy, I can't tell you how mad it makes me to see the third baseman in baseball nearly touch second base when there is a baserunner on third. Like BRO, somebody needs to hold him on third so he doesnt steal home! Fielding isnt the only thing that matters.
    BTW, professional sports teams, PLEASE HIRE ME

    Is this where we start considering making the court bigger and making the 3 farther back? Just sounds like 3's are way too strong as the players are getting significantly better over the years. This way I feel like the best shooters like Steph and Dame actually are rewarded more for their range.

    The Rockets missed 27 3s in a row because it was fixed, watch the video on youtube. Harden had many no foul calls when he baits the shooter. There were other fouls not called. And then, get this, when Harden hit a 3 point and got 4 point play with a foul they wiped it off, keeping the streak going. Went from HOU up 20 to GSW up 20, 40 point swing.

    LeBron knows he pulls up for early threes all the time lol You can also count him in the stepback threes part, the difference being he steps to his left at an angle that can still be considered 'back' relative to the basket ("LeF--k You" threes). He does that WAY more over the last 3-4.

    It's only a good shot when the defender isn't allowed to press, trap and body-up 94ft for 48 minutes. Empower the defense to stop the offensive player and watch the 6 second three disappear overnight. As it stands It's a valid tactic because their is too much artificial space created by these foul and contact rules.

    The only argument i can make against early threes is that its draining the energy/willpower of your teammates if you miss. Just worked their ass off to make a stop, run to the other side and just when they are there, missed three and they have to run back. If players touch the ball more on offense they have more willpower to work hard on defence

    The reason the step back 3 is made at a higher percentage these days and because defense is not played anymore. It's really not that hard to defend. It's not like they have a quick first step then a quick step back then a quick release. they are actually stepping back kind of slow, players just don't play defense these days.
