The Kamov does not have the tail rotor limitation that "conventional" helicopters have. The tail rotor robs power to counter tourque. The Kamov puts all power to lift and thrust.
The hind is a faster aircraft - it's not so much about power loss in the other choppers as it is about the efficiency with which the kamov puts power to the ground (or air)
@@carmelonold1090 Bell helicopter and Boeing might have some insight as to why your statement is mistaken. Both companies have fielded coaxial helicopters for the next gen Army aircraft. I think the Kamov benefits somewhat from pilot experience too, or lack thereof. Helicopters are difficult to fly, I don't think this is some sort of secret. There's 3 things (there's more, of course, but these are the ones I think would be most important in a drag race scenario) you need to worry about when lifting off in a helicopter: -Torque reaction -Flapback -Inflow Roll (Transverse Flow) Torque reaction is the easiest to explain of course, it's simply adding more power to the main rotor to go up/faster and it makes the helicopter spin. Flapback is a bit more complex but essentially as the helicopter accelerates, change in angle of attack on the advancing blade causes it to pitch up, often quite harshly. The pitch up will also make the main rotor act like an airbrake and thus this will cost a lot of valuable speed.* Inflow Roll is caused by a reduction in lift at the back of the rotor and this manifests as a roll to one side. This one is probably responsible for the most crashes seen in the video. As these factors are dependent on the direction the main rotor turns in and the Kamov has 2, the Kamov won't be visibly affected by them. We see in the drag races some of the pilots are unable to overcome helicopter physics and so are flying far too high, rolling over and crashing or just going sideways down the runway and thus losing valuable time. I believe some extra practice in the Hind and Gazelle to learn to understand these effects would give them a better chance against the Kamov. Love from Cpt. Thomas CPL/H *Edit because I forgot to add this: the Kamov should be affected by Flapback, same as the other helicopters, but it won't be affected by torque or roll. This makes it easier to fly as the pilots only have to worry about one thing screwing up rather than all three.
That would’ve been much more entertaining. Seeing their proximity it’s the reason I watched the race in the first place. Pretty disappointed seeing them going underground and flopping upside down on the runway without losing so much as a rotor blade
100% of the Kamov's power goes to lift and forward movement since it's engines are only powering the dual rotors. All single rotor designs waste some engine power on the tail rotor. Kamov may have less power but it uses it more efficiently.
Never heard of a helicopter 🚁 drag race... Until now. That got me thinking of that one Bell helicopter 🚁 that can fly to supersonic speeds from THAT 80's TV show...
here ladies and gentlemen you see the best example of what happens when you pull your collective from 0 to 100% (in under 1 second) and do not know what your engine can do have the hinds also set the "master" gas throttel to max?
Home with Covid. Found one of these vids from Grim Reapers by chance. I've been watching them for a week and have never played DCS. I'm about to start. Yall are awesome! Thanks for the entertainment!!
The Hueys got a great start, and if it was only a half mile race they might have won. I'd love to see an Apache or Cobra in this sprint... and a V-22 of course.
The Kamarovs won so consistently simply because one of the main reasons they have the contra rotating rotors is is because it allows more engine power to be directed towards flight and less towards stabilising the flight. As no engine power needs to be directed to a second rotor that doesn't provide any collective pitch such as a secondary rotor. As such it can while it may not necessarily have the most powerful power plant it's use of said power is much more efficient as such allowing for a sleeker design while still maintaining great power applied to the shaft.
@Jaomir Courtar something I have noticed that is difficult to manage is flying fast without causing the lower rotor to lift into the one above it. While I'm on flight characteristics I've also noticed on occasion if you up or lower too much power too fast you can begin to spin a bit. Doesn't happen much (especially not in forward flight) but in a hover it can throw you off target a bit.
I think, as Cap said, it has more to do with the fact that the contra-rotating blades mean they can go full power straight away. The tail rotor types can't due to the torque-spin.
