On boy, it's another experiment video! Today, we'll be trying to install Windows XP Mode inside of a Windows 7 VM running on my Windows 10 PC. Let's see what I got myself into.

Try to make a vm in the windows xp mode
I actually tried to put Virtual PC under XP mode.
This didn't go well x)
That seems like the only logical next step. Then maybe a VM inside of that VM? Yeah, might have to try that out!
@@MichaelMJD I tried Linux VM on Windows XP before
@@MichaelMJD Maybe you can try to run VMWare Workstation 6 on XP and run Windows 98 with Unity mode?
it didn't work flawless
I remember they recommended installing a VM inside XP Mode as well. So you would actually end up with 2 antivirus apps running when you had this setup following Microsoft's recommendations.
That Windows XP window on Win7 without opening the VM was really cool
Indeed! I tried XP Mode about 2~3 years ago, but i didn't notice that feature back then, so it took me by surprise to see how smooth and seamless it worked.
To be honest, there's something both nostalgic and unsettling seeing a Luna window in an Aero environment.
I loved the explorer integration. You could create any windows vm you wanted from the explorer and manage them in the explorer.
Dude...your channel is awesome. All these videos are so interesting and I love them. Fantastic job.
Also I remember getting Virtual PC 2007 to run years ago as a kid and I felt like a king lol
That I will admit is something I did not know. I did install XP Mode on my Win7 back in the day, but I never knew you could put a shortcut like that in the Win7 Start Menu to launch an app in XP mode without needing to actually start the XP VM (after obviously installing it first).
Now try Windows 3.1 inside XP Mode inside Windows 7 inside Windows 10
I like more your idea. But how do you emulate Windows 3.1 in Windows 95?
If it is retail Windows 95, its built-in MS-DOS 7.0 can natively run Windows 3.x without issue. If it is 95 OSR 2.x, then you need to find the proper OSR2Fix patch to the IO.SYS to do so.
Correction: Windows 7's support will end on 14th January 2020, so it's around two and a half months from now on.
They will extend that support on a month to month basis, but it will cost a lot of money. I believe 9 dollars a month for each copy of Win7.
@@MisterMichaelVReyes I was talking about end user support, just like how Mike would.
true
@@MisterMichaelVReyes true
Third party updates exist
I'm surprised the installer for Windows XP Mode is still up. I'd figure it'd be taken down when Windows XP ended support, but since Windows 7 is still being support I guess it makes sense.
Also, just a FYI for you Michael, Windows Virtual PC and Microsoft Virtual PC are separate products. Windows Virtual PC will actually refuse to run if it detects that Microsoft Virtual PC is installed.
I got into VMs through VPC 2007 as well Michael.
As did this other Michael, here.
I had interest since i installed VirtualBox. I still use it.
This inspired me to attempt
Windows 1 in
Windows 2 in
Windows 3 in
Windows 3.1 in
Windows 95 in
Windows 98 in
Windows Me in
Windows 2000 in
Windows XP in
Windows Vista
Windows 7 in
Windows 8 in
Windows 8.1
In my daily driver windows 10 pc!
I didn’t try yet
I did and it worked
I was honestly surprised that XP Mode ran in a virtual environment - back in the day of Microsoft Virtual PC, whenever you ran an instance of a VM in MVPC it used to kick up an error. Very cool, none-the-less!
I still use XP Mode for some programs that wouldn’t install on 7 properly. Programs start slowly the first time, but other than that, it’s very useful.
I remember Windows XP Mode! Parallels offers something similar for macOS today quite surprisingly, as I migrated to macOS on my laptop and had fun with Parallels on it. Impressive.
You can also use VirtualBox for free (not sponsored )
Very cool. I always wanted to know how XP mode worked.
Well, apparently I'm super early. I have used XP mode before, it's a very great feature! Also nice video
I'm gonna take that and archive it. (considering the fun it can be to track something like this down once it's not hosted anymore)
I have a high-spec HP Z800 that will turn into a Windows 7 retro PC at some point. :)
good to hear that that someone is gonna archive it
Thanks for the very cool and helpful video!
The whole concept also reminds me of OS9 environment in early Mac OS X
Good video Michael MJD about Windows XP Mode
Thank you!
Rest in peace Windows 7
It's still got a couple months. Either way, it's legacy will still be kept by old people who refuse to upgrade.
Fuck off
Just for fun. I've just installed XP mode (WindowsXPMode-en_us.exe installer) on Linux using Wine. Then mounted its .vhd file inside VirtualBox. Installed Guest Addi(c)tions, enabled seamless mode and BOOM - Windows XP Mode on Linux :) Though it didn't want to activate. But still, worked just fine.
That's not XP Mode, that's just an XP VM on Linux.
@@Jake1702 And XP Mode is XP VM on Windows.
@@Jake1702 You do know that XP Mode is just a VM running on Windows using Windows Virtual PC, right?
They're just taking a XP Mode vhd (Virtual Hard Drive) and using Virtualbox (another VM software that can run on Linux, unlike WVPC) to boot it.
@@IdRatherNotHaveAHandleThankYou XP Mode is designed to be integrated into the host desktop.
@@Jake1702 Virtualbox's built-in Guest Additions for Windows VMs and Linux VMs allow you to run programs from the guest system without a VM Window.
Awesome video Michael
I've used XP Mode before, it's pretty redundant once you know how to set up a VM, but I can see it's usefulness for less experienced users.
I love this! I will get this on my main laptop
Back when I was keeping track on Windows 7, it was one of the mode that I really wanted to try but unable to do so as this mode is limited to Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate.
Maybe I should fire up a VM and try this too
I remember back shortly after windows 7 launched I thought xp mode was so cool and I wanted to use it so badly that I actually upgraded my laptop with a cracked product key of win7 ultimate just so I could download it
bravo ... nice video
Cheers !!! :) Just downloaded, just in case............ !!! :)
Unfortunately on July 25, 2021, Microsoft removed the links for Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode
try using wayback machine
Your voice is amazing ☺️
It's now longer there to download, 2 months ago it still was
Nice one Michael! Can you try upgrading the VM to Vista to make a "Vista Mode"?
Then maybe Windows 7 mode on Windows 7?
Oh...
Nice!
Try to make an Ubuntu vm in Ubuntu 18.04 then 17.04 then... You get it. 😀
Drinking game: 2 shots every time there's a pop-up and when he rages.
I've actually been wanting to do something like this for a while now, I really want to try running as many virtual machines inside of each other as possible. I've only gotten as far as installing Windows FLP in a virtual machine on a Windows XP virtual machine on my host PC, I probably could have run Windows 95 in FLP as well
@@zacharyreynolds4303 No, it's just coincidental.
I wonder if Windows 10 will run XP mode? (Maybe in the upcoming "sandbox"?)
No. Microsoft has already indicated they are not bringing it back.
Use compatibility mode on it to use it
super eraly, this cool
I tried it once I got Windows 7
moreover I tried Windows 2000 and ME
and it worked perfectly
A virtual machine inside a virtual machine, thats cool!! :)
Very Nice Video for Windows XP Mode MJD. I'm thinking about new future video. Can you made new video for Windows 98 Development for History and also Windows 7 Development for History too 😁.
3 icons on the desktop. XP like: "What a mess, tidy up ya lazy bastard!"
cool video keep it up
Fun project ^^
I still need this but How On Earth can I get the download files for Virtual PC and XP Mode now that they are taken down?? I am so mad I assumed I had saved everything I need in backup but IMMEDIATELY after I could not download anymore I found out my backup of the image failed to open because I don't have everything saved!
your voice sounds proffesional
Fun fact: Office 97 can install on Windows 7, and the Office 2007 compatibility pack that you’d normally add to Office 2003 works just fine on 97!
I was running Windows 2000 on VMware and it found and installed two updates i was missing, this doesn't seem to work on actual hardware though.
My mind is -blown- totally nuked. I had no clue this existed and I must try it. It'll probably run like $#!t on my old laptop but it's worth a shot.
Informative, now I want to try on my PC. :(
Oh and Michael, I think you’re gonna make that End of Support video when Windows 7 reaches that deadline. I’m excited and sad when it comes.
8:47 XP Mode does ask for a product key if your not running Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise.
The XP Product key is included in Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise
Nope, you're wrong. The XP Mode only runs on above Editions, not on the Home Edition.
@@niklas7816 It runs on other versions with tricks, but not activated
Windows XP games I just saw..... back to the old days with no internet ...
2:29 they still host windows xp sp3 so it will be there for a long time
@Michael do you have the install files. The links no longer work?
Hey Michael, do you know the PC emulation software called PCem? Is not a virtual machine, is a PC emulator like a videogame emulator. You can run really old operating systems which you couldn't run well otherwise with Virtual Machine software.
What hypervisor do you use? VirtualBox, Hyper-V, VMware?
Does this let you recognize USB device in Windows XP VM? I have an old VAG-COM USB Cable only works on Windows XP. Windows XP VM works perfectly fine under Windows 7 but I'm running Windows 10 now and HyperV doesn't really work as well as the VM in Windows 7
Microsoft also had a VM software called Windows virtuell server, if I remember correctly !
Why is your system resource drive viewable? Normally that's hidden.
If you Open diskmanager you can edit the flags of it. Just copy the ones that c: has
This reminds me of the Classic environment in macOS 10.
One thing I noticed is that XP mode is based off SP3 yet it has IE6 and old media player
Note: Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode are not available because of Windows 7 being out of support, if you try to tap/click the link, it will lead to a Microsoft 404 error.
Someone must have downloaded the files.
You can still get the old VM and XP files from the web archive
Good advice. I'm having odd network connections. Some pages will load without a problem and others will tell me there is a internet connectivity issue. It's doing my head in.
Cool, now you can run Windows 3.11 with DOSBOX via Windows XP Mode inside Windows 7 VM on Windows 10 host
Mine Says The Certificate for the signer of the message is invalid or not found. Help!
That is cool. I can't help but feel it's a little unpractical though. Why not run do mode in Windows 10?
Never got XP mode working on my computer. Now I know why. I had home premium..
@Skytrace Ling OFFICIAL yeah I'm out of that though, Windows 10 on every device so idc anymore
What a innocent noise
Hi @Michael MJD ~ I realize that this video is getting a bit long in the tooth, but we actually need to "revive" and old [expensive] 32-bit XP utility for a project. As it's been tough-sledding trying to find a decent old XP laptop, I've been thinking about VMs and Windows XP Mode, in particular. In your mind, would it make sense for us to, perhaps, broaden the search and look for either a decent Win 7 laptop or an even newer Win 10 laptop and use Windows XP Mode to run the old XP utility I mentioned? As I understand it, you used a Win 10 PC to run a Win 7 VM and, finally, used Windows XP mode - from Windows 7 - to start and use Win XP in Windows XP mode. Is that correct? Anyway, I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have on how you would approach buying an old machine, if you were in our situation. By the way, we're long-time Mac users, so we don't presently own a PC of any kind. Thank you for your help.
There is a right click contect menu where you can open exes directly to xp mode
I installed Virtual PC and also the XP Mode, but I don't have an shortcut for the XP Mode and neither the XP Mode can be opened with the virtual PC. I try since weeks to install XP on my Laptop, but nothing works.. Does anybode know why it doesn't work and could help me?
Nice
I'm going to be using 7 and XP for a long time. The only thing i don't like about Windows 8.1 is you can't use an image for a LOG ON screen. Log on in caps because that's what i mean. People get it confused for the lock screen.
you need to enable full graphics in the xp mode settings those did work fine for me so shutdown xp mode then open the settings up the graphic memory and up it
Yeah, I used it before briefly. You cannot really play any games on it though, as it does not support any form of scaling or whatnot. Full screen app will just shrink into a tiny window.
The windows XP Mode for Windows 7 is still hostet at the website of Microsoft! 12/2020
I used to have Windows 7 Pro on my old 2008-ish Compaq laptop (which has Vista basic pre-installed), and when I attempted to install XP mode it complained about my PC did not meet the basic requirements, so I never had a chance to run that. :(
Thanks for the great video. Need more help. I am trying to access an external hard drive through the XP Virtual PC. I am able to install the software through the CD-ROM but it does not see the drive connected to the host's ethernet port. Lights are yellow/flashing yellow so think there is a connection problem. Any ideas. Hardware manager in the virtual PC machine. As an alternative, can the Virtual PC access the wifi network of the host machine because I can connect the hard drive to the router and try to access it that way.
Do you know if you could run a VM inside of XP mode, and then run Windows 95 on that?
i should have subscribed when i watch the hanah montana video
Try updating all the Drivers and what it allows you to update on WIndows Update for XP mode. I think you will find they do work?
old updates and tools are allways available for old os even for windows 2000 or windows 98
QQ: Can this windows xp installed inside windows 10? I have a lot of games that run smoothly on windows xp, can I use this xp to run my game? My games are crashing regularly or not running in windows 10 at all.
SO NOW,im trying it..^-^
I wish they should create Windows 7 mode for Windows 10 when the support ends
i keep an old asus gaming rig with W7 on it around, just so i can run older games on the XP mode shell. you need the W7 Professional version, and possibly some BIOS enables to do it though. W7 Home / Student, etc won't do it.
if windows 7 has compatibility mode, what’s the point of this?
That compatibility layer is not perfect, and some things just won't run. This is especially true when the program uses undocumented functions and APIs to do something.
i would like to see a windows 98 se mode. However you should watch a few youtubes :) and recode all of windows in assembly :) All kidding aside w98 might be a good idea if you would like to show people how to enable use of older software that has lost some functionality in newer operating systems.
Hello Michael can you please upload XP mode and windows virtual pc and other versions to your archive account. thanks
So I can do flytech's error span and run it as winXP and win7 app
Woah, does wWindows XP mode have persistence?!?
Virtualbox also does seamless mode
I have friends with a Walt Disney World CD ROM which will not work in Windows 7 and I hadn't quite gotten XP mode to work yet. This may help.
Xp mode is also for windows 8.1 ?
Yeah, but how did you install the Windows 7 on the Windows 10 in the first place?
I could never get XP Mode to work... wondering if it'll run on Win8/10.... Can it be used to run 16bit console apps?
IIRC it's one of the reason XP mode exists (to run 16 bit app on 64 bit system).
Unfortunately, WVPC runs on 800 Mhz speed, I think a virtual P3, and the graphics VVRAM is so low, if I recall it is 32 megs only.
It has been a long time since I touched W7 Pro and used the XP mode.
should use qubes os where everything is in separate vms from the network to the usb
Welp . . . time for a quick trip to Google!
Thanks Spi- i mean Aurora ^^;
