I used this pattern design to make a holder for the blades for my food processor. I didn't want to cut myself each time I pulled them out of the cabinet. I made a couple of changes, like using iron-on fleece for the batting and adding Velcro tabs to seal it shut. Now I can safely find the blades for the food processor. I've made a few of these and I think it important to use 100% cotton thread (as well as cotton fabric & batting) for a microwaveable bag. A polyester might melt.

Just want to say instructions are great. I like these directions because it is easier on sewing machine by having the flap . With the flap you are not overlapping the top and bottom, thereby having only 6 layers to sew instead of 9 . Your 1/2 inch seam allowance should be big enough so you are not sewing on the seam allowance you turned inside or you would be sewing over 12 layers. Hope this isn't too confusing

You can buy a red potato bag on ebay for two australian dollars, buy a few as they get stained fairly quickly and using any kind of cleaning agent would not be a healthy choice.

I do have a question. Has the potato batting been improved? I made some several years ago for gifts and low and behold they caught fire in the microwave. I would love to make these again . That pattern looks fantastic. . They worked great in the microwave until they caught on fire, that was embarrassing 😊
53sweetums the cotton batting must be 100% cotton without any scrim. Some pkgs that say “cotton batting” will also say on the pkg if there is any other filler. Also be sure the thread and fabric is 100% cotton. Synthetics in any of the three will not withstand microwaving. (That was emphasized & pointed out out to me by a fabric store employee ~ synthetics can melt and heat up differently than cotton, so if for example your fabric is cotton but not the batting, the cotton can catch fire from the more excessive heat generated from the batting). I hope that helps.

I understand the situation for sure. I have stuff around that I don't remember what the content is anymore myself. Not too long ago I made a specialized pot holder for a friend's birthday present and had to go out and buy all new material because labels and wrappers and end stickers had been removed or lost long ago. I didn't need a lot, but I had to get batting, material, and even thread. So, you are not alone in that journey. Good luck with the new project.

I'll add this...I always start baked potatoes in the microwave (though I've never used a zap bag)...and then finish off in the oven or toaster oven.

The fabric, batting, and thread has to be 100% cotton; anything else will either melt or catch fire.
