    Okay, I agree with you, 100% automation must not include any dupe interactions, so no ranch can be fully automated. It then is the question of how close one can get to fully automated, i.e. how much dupe interaction is required. With ranches best case scenario involves only grooming and critter relocation tasks, which means your design is, indeed, as automated as possible.

    Bravo Echo! I really admire how you can take a confusing looking system (automation baffles me) and explain it so clearly, step by step. I am pretty sure that one watch has given me the theory behind it all. I'd need to follow along to build one but I think I would understand most of it. The only bits that I am not 100% on still is the shipping count thing and maybe the counting bit. But if I played around with those things it would likely make more sense!

    That said, efficiency wise it is best to restrict Puft movement inside the stable with pheumatic doors at the top and liquid locks at the bottom. Not only it keeps them closer to the grooming station, but unlike other critters, it also effects their metabolism. The more space Pufts have to move around, the less resources they will produce.

    i like that you went over the top here, but it can be made way less complicated, depending on what it is your purpose is for the pufts. let me explain:
    1. pufts break the need for meat and eggs, due to the 4kg per cycle of slime dusk caps require, and the waterweed which only require .5 kg per cycle of bleachstone. only 1 puft is needed to support 11 dusk caps. in other words, 5 pufts can support an entire colony on mushrooms alone.
    2. you want to have one puft ranch and one puft prince ranch to keep pure eggs being laid, with single but separate incubator rooms, and a single large mixing room to allow for incubator room overflow to flow into. you won't need large scale squeaky puft ranching. only 2 pufts and a single chlorine vent is needed to support 114 waterweed plants.
    3. the only exception to the rule is the dense puft. they have less production efficiency over the oxylite forge, so if you have no access to gold or plastic, then you would need to go this route with them.

      the chlorine vent has other major uses, sand production through table salt refinement, and oxygen production through the rust deoxidizer. the .5 kg per cycle from waterweed allow for 114 waterweed to be supported by 2 squeaky pufts, or 12 with puft princes, both of which can be supported by one vent.

    I think the 15.4 eggs is not accurate for meat calculation. You have to round down to 15 because 0.4 of an egg is not an egg. Having 3 pufts is not going to result in a 46th egg.

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  Год назад +2

      Truth be told 15 isn't necessarily accurate either. The time the critter goes between grooming (and its reproduction being dropped) fluctuates total eggs as well. This is why I round in the end. For instance, if the final number is 2.6 dupes per ranch, I will only try to feed 2 or 2.5 dupes with it.

    I think I'm missing something with the counter+conveyor meter. The point is to keep exactly one puff prince egg in the incubation chanber, so can't you go filter -> drop-off -> evo chamber; then use the critter sensor to disable the drop-off?

  • @xBLiNDBoi
    @xBLiNDBoi Год назад +2

    Something I thought about when trying this out, the slime produced from the regular pufts can be used for Fungal Spores, if I did the math right 5 pufts + prince can support ~60 Fungal Spores.
    Slime produced: (47.5 * 5) + 3 = 240.5 kg per cycle
    Fungal Spore needs 4000 grams or 4kg per cycle: 240.5 / 4 = 60.125
    Rounding down to 60 Fungal Spores, which produces a Mushroom every 7.5 cycles and a Mushroom can be cooked to Fried Mushroom gaining additional calories. A Mushroom is 2,400 and a Fried Mushroom is 2,800 calories.
    2,400 * 60 = 144,000 calories of Mushrooms
    2,800 * 60 = 168,000 calories of Fried Mushrooms
    Assuming you will always fry the mushrooms, dividing the total by 7.5 will give us a very healthy amount of calories per cycle.
    168,000 / 7.5 = 22,400 calories per cycle
    Assuming I am doing the math right, 22 dupes worth of food seems to be a lot for just one ranch. Feels like am I missing something?

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  Год назад +1

      Looks solid to me. Well done.

    • @8-7-styx94
      @8-7-styx94 Год назад +1

      It gets even better though, when you add in the squeaky pufts you're going to get you can feed ~57 waterweed plants per puft. With that you can turn your fried mush into mushroom wraps and gain an additional 2000 kCal per unit of fried mush. All you need is chlorine and salt water. As a bonus you can go for a wide ranch and just use the extra non ranching floor tiles for said water weed plants, I mean you're flooding the floor either way so might as well.
      in the end though you turn that 168,000 kCal of Fried mush into about 288,000 kCals or about 38400 per cycle. So 2 ranches one of which is also a farm yields enough food for nearly 40 dupes per cycle!

  • @myxal
    @myxal Год назад

    Great to see this approach. One issue though, I think - if you choose to set the non-prince puft drop-off to 5, then the ranch will not be restocked to full capacity until shortly after the prince dies, and will soon drop to 5 as soon as the next non-prince puft dies.
    After playing with slime pufts in the base game, I picked up Spaced Out a few weeks ago and am currently in the middle of automating my dense puft ranches. I figured that instead of trying to rely on the egg chances swinging back and forth based on the prince's presence, I'd rather maintain 2 ranches - one 16-cell ranch with a single dense puft producing prince eggs, and one 96-cell productivity ranch with 5 dense pufts and 1 prince.
    I'm trying to figure out an arrangement where dupes can only access 1 of 2 drop-offs at a time - then, I'd switch between the drop-offs based on counting the meat leaving the ranch.

    This tutorial is a little old, but I have to point out the calculation of calories is wrong. With an adult life of 70 cycles and an egg-laying interval of 4.54 cycles, each puft will create 15 eggs, not 15.4 as the 0.4 of an egg is never realised.
    This means for the barbecue calculation, we would have 15 eggs transforming into 2400kcal of meat, which can then be cooked into barbecue for a 25% increase in calories over a 75 cycle period, equating to 400kcal per cycle per puft. Which is equivalent to 2400kcal per ranch per cycle.

    Could the problems with multiple ranches for the same Puft type be solved by having one designated duplicant for each farm, so that only he can acces his designated ranch and incubator rooms? For example, you have 2 Puft ranches for Oxolite. You build both ranches and assign 2 ramchers. Rancher one can only go into ranch one and its incubators and rancher two can only go into ranch two and its incubators. In my mind that should work...

    Bottling polluted water or stacking polluted dirt in storage containers/reservoirs and deconstructing/dropping them into a single debris/bottle is also incredibly efficient for offgassing purposes. There is a way using automation and a sweepy, plus some clever positioning to create an auto-bottling point where sweepy mops and a dupe empties the dock but gets forced to drop the bottle beyond their reach before getting to a liquid dropoff as a door shuts in their face, but you can manually just place, fill, and deconstruct reservoirs for bottling 5 tons at a time. The math for calculating off-gas rates for stacked polluted dirt or bottled polluted water is 4/99 * mass of the object which can result in very powerful offgassing potential up to a maximum of the 1.8kg/s that causes polluted objects to stop offgassing (somewhere around 45 tons in bottled polluted water, or dirt so 2.25 storage containers full or 7 liquid reservoirs built, filled, and deconstructed. These objects will offgas 1.8kg/s and stifle until air pressure is lowered from consumption. From there you only need to occasionally increase the mass via more dropoff of resources in the same tile to add to the debris object in question.

  • @joeschmoe7324
    @joeschmoe7324 Год назад

    The polluted oxygen offgass amount is determined by the mass of the source cell of pwater. So to maximize offgassing have the trough bend 90degrees going up the right wall to insure th bottom tiles are always at least 1ton mass if po can't offgas up it will try to appear to the left of the tile.

  • @Serena-or7sl

    I use doors on the bottom of my puft ranches with a bit of water, so that when the dupes go inside the ranch they don't wet their feet. Only three tiles out of 8 (or any number) are then "solid" and in need of bein sweeped manually. The oxylite / egg any debris fall right on the bottom of the door It works quite nicely, and the auto sweeper still does its job.
    It can also be used to keep eggs out of the ranch before having an autosweeper; this way the puft will never become cramped (and it's also a quite nice evolution box by itself, with very easy setup early game, of course the dupes have to actually go there to collect the meat, so upgrading to an autosweeper is preferable).

    Just curious: with the extended pH2O for the regular pufts, it seems to be feasable to have several slime ranches. My curious brain however is wondering if that would require an incubation setup of it's own, or if one chamber could support two (or more) ranches.
    I know, I could do the math myself, but it's easier for me if someone else knows 😅

    • @leznets91
      @leznets91 Год назад

      The area of polluted water is usually insufficient unless the farm is very, very wide. Adding pufts adds consumption, so no. But you can design a polluted water diffuser which maximizes offgassing, and pump or otherwise direct the pO2 into the ranch

    • @salemprompthous3820
      @salemprompthous3820 Год назад

      @@leznets91 my question wasn't directed towards the use of polluted water, it was directed towards if one incubation chamber could support more than one ranch. The pufts and their consumption makes no difference, as the ranch itself can't be supported by the water alone. Supplemental gases would be required, as the extension of the water tank is required for the single ranch in the first place 😀

    you can also make small rooms with pufts, one for a puff prince and one for a puff prince breeder, every 75 cycles, this door opens up until the critter has left, utilizing a buffer gate and a critter sensor. Hopefully all the critters will have flown through the doorway and entered the room before the end of the day (which they probably garanteed will) you can use a dubble gate to ensure no pufts sneak into this room during the princey ritual day. This also would require less dupe labor. And since the critter does not need a feeder you can just leave them there. I don't know if this could effect your resorced negatively, but the glum debuff should help here. Let me know your thought.

      Ok, so we have two tiny rooms next to each ranch. One gets a prince egg dropped in it, one a puft egg. A critter sensor in the room blocks new eggs dropping if an egg or critter is there. So they constantly keep a "spare" critter in them and hatch a new one if empty. As soon as the number in the ranch drops below 6< it triggers a counter. 5 times it will open the door to the ranch room until the critter leaves it (then closing the door as soon as the hatching room is empty and enabling the egg dropper again). 1 time it does that with the prince room. - then repeat with 5 normal again.
      How does that sound? Zero wrangling.

    Cool video, never tried to counter automation before. Nice use case, although...
    I feel like it's kinda overthinking the whole process. I personally have had a ranch for each type and 1 extra with mixed puff and puff prince with a higher prority. I just use two evolution chambers. 1 for overflow eggs and 1 for babies from incubators that I don't have a place to put them. You get to the point that you're producing so many eggs of all types that automating it like this video is overengineering imo. Cool, but overkill.
    Although I might try the 2 Dropoff idea to get a one prince, 5 other idea. Figure it doesn't need absolute perfection to work.

    Gonna be honest, I just installed the mod that makes puft princes not be a thing. I don't see why we can't just put limits on individual species on the dropoff station, just say '5 puft 1 prince' sort of thing and be done with it. I mean I get that this would *only* help pufts from a gameplay perspective, but it would also be neat to have various critters in cross-species rooms without having to put in an unreasonable amount of effort.

    Found a issue: Automation to reset the conveyor meter will send two eggs, this is caused by the counter constantly sending a green signal until an egg is detected. I implemented two solutions on my end.
    First solution is to add another critter sensor detecting if there are more than 1 egg, so 2 or more egg to activate a sweeper to put the eggs into a conveyor loader. This solution helps when dupes delivery an egg instead of using the egg near the incubator as well.
    The second solution is to implement a rising edge detector to the green signal from the counter to reset the conveyor meter. In other words, a rising edge detector will just send a pulse of a green signal instead of constantly being green.
    Edit:
    Found another issue, more of a bug in the game. When loading into your save, your signal counters will be reset when they shouldn't, after looking around in forum posts it appears to be a issue with Critter Sensors and has been in the game for a while. In short, during the loading process Critter Sensor seem to be sending a green signal and because of how the automation is set, it will reset the counters. A solution to this problem is adding a filter gate to the wire connecting to the reset inputs for the counters. Keep in mind, when you load into your save the counters will be 0s but will return to their counts once you unpause the game.

    Nice video. And very nice explanation.
    The math on kcal is a bit off, but it doesn't matter. Point is, it's not statistics. It's not like sometimes they lay 15 eggs and sometimes 16 and the average is 15.4. That .4 never happens, as the critter dies with 40% reproduction. So it's 15 eggs.
    Also, it's 1 egg every 4.5 cycles exaclty, that 22% is rounded. Again, not relevant as the result is still 15 eggs in a lifetime.
    Finally, since you do add puflets to the ranch (at various ages) you can't simply use 70 cycles as the time a critter spends in the ranch. Some of them will be added at age 1, maybe. Those spend 74 cycles in the ranch while still producing only 15 eggs. 15 * 1600 / 74 * 6 = 1946 kcal/cycle, a tad short of two dups per ranch, in kinda the worst case scenario. It's safe to assume that on average pufts are introduced at around age 3, so 15 * 1600 / 72 * 6 = 2000. That's 2 dups, 2.6 is quite off.

      wouldn't this be fixed by only allowing adults in the ranch?

    • @TheMule71
      @TheMule71 Год назад

      @@Serena-or7sl yes, there are builds that do that using critter sensors and one directional movement of adults (there are ways to force an adult critter out of something and not make it go back - speaking of hatches here tho, I'm not sure about pufts). You trap one adult in such place, and open a door as soon as one breeder dies. It doesn't matter if the adult in question is 20 cycles old. Again how that applies to pufts I don't know.

    Seems overcomplicated.
    All you want is a single pufflet in smaller ranch, without prince, so it makes price eggs, and you start incubating price earlier, so it's under one cycle in "child" form, delivered asap when old dies.
    This is nice, but have downtime. I love the timer, AND door locking, I might steal that. I tended to just YOLO it with eggs and butcher station mod.
