Add in Smog Slugs, and now Sponge Slugs, instead of Gas/Liquid pumps, and now you have a significantly smaller amount of power being wasted to move gasses and liquids around! Win win!

    That's a pretty cool idea with the gas lock. Small tweak you can do: you can switch the airflow-tile and the pneumatic doors, so the tile is at the bottom. It will have absolutely no effect to the gasses traveling, but your dupes won't have to jump down twice and then back up again. With ladders at the side it will just be a straight line for them, while still having the same benefit of the gas lock.

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  2 года назад +1

      I worry then there will be times there will be no CO2 in the lock, which occasionally, if the slugs are in the right spot, the hydrogen will hook through before rising.

    • @salemprompthous3820
      @salemprompthous3820 2 года назад

      If switching the airflow tile and pneumatic door placements, the airflow tile isn't required, as the pneumatic door will lock in the room with diagonal tiles. This way, you'd have an extra 100kg of metal ores to feed the slugs 😉 if the jump between the tiles is annoying, put in a ladder tile below the door

    I can run a fully self contained low dupe evenuatly to NO Dupe labor, with ethanol that even produces cold oxygen for one dupe
    (with a little extra and have excess power from it the system of about 200w/s or a tiny bit more.)
    Yeah that seems like a lot of setup/space to do it several times, but it is done with wild lumber plants or with some outside help as needed a few farm planted lumber trees. That even cools the base

    Edit: tl;dr the variant Slugs, I like to use as mobile gas/liquid pumps, rather than having to put down a bunch, to get all the gas/liquids out of a room. They don't cost any power, just some metal, that can be made sustainable with metal volcanos.
    Edit2: For your Ranch Setup, I'd probably move the Feeder setup closer to the ceiling. That way the hydrogen doesn't take a long route up to the airflow tiles, potentially causing that lightning strike scenario where right as it's deciding what egg to lay, the plug slug is surrounded by hydrogen because 4 of its fellows just ate and a bunch of Hydrogen just poured into the system.
    Closer to the Airflow Tile, means less travel time out for hydrogen to cause problems. Also, if you put airflow tiles under the ranch, and build another ranch for Smog Slugs, they will siphon out the Carbon Dioxide, and prevent the Plug Slug ranch from becoming a problem.
    I've found the best use for smog slugs, isn't in collecting the Hydrogen Plug Slugs put out, but policing the unbreathable gasses that tend to flood around my base. If you can cool them enough Smog Slugs can survive, they provide an sustainable way to constantly expand, without having to use up a bunch of power, building a room, then sticking a ton of pumps down. Plus, Smog Slugs can move when the gasses do, so that pump you put to capture Hydrogen as it floats up to collect on the ceiling, that keeps sucking all the Hydrogen away in a small area, can be snagged because the slug will go to the Hydrogen, suck it up, and put it in the reservoir, rather than constructing 5 or 6 gas pumps.
    As for the Sponge Slug, the same thing applies with liquid pumps. Instead of putting down 2 or 3 of them, put a sponge slug in the room with the liquid you want pumped, and the slug will travel to the liquid, instead of waiting for it to spread out, getting sucked up, then spreading out another small puddle.

    I was gonna say you could use the sponge slugs as a power free way to clean up liquids that comes out of some buildings instead of having it going into a pit with a hydro sensor and liquid pump but you still need power to automatically feed them.
    I would say your plug slug ranch would be improved if you used smog plugs to pump out the hydrogen at the top instead of a pump I guess?

When the smog slug is in Oxygen/pOxygen, it's egg chances of smog slug drops significantly fast, while it only increases slowly in comparison.
      Ofc, for a short term cleaning of the gases, the smog slug actually seeks out the Co2, chasing it around (which is kinda funny to watch when there are several unbreathable gases in a large area) so it would work for it's lifetime. My suggestion for what to do with smog slugs: they’re basically unpowered gas pumps. It means you can store huge amounts of gas in a sealed room instead of gas reservoirs (which would normally have the advantage of requiring no power to get the gas back out). I’m about to try this out in my base where I’m looking for a gas storage solution for natural gas and hydrogen. If I create a room outside the base and use high pressure gas outlets to fill it, I can have a smog slug in there that is delivering these elements to a pipe connected to a single gas reservoir. Could also put a smog slug in a sealed natural gas vent for power free pumping. None of this is worth it though if the slugs still need to eat metal. Can’t find info on their diet in the wiki, so I’m assuming they don’t eat.

    Experimenting with tame plug slugs, turns out you can feed them 60kg of metal every other day and still get 1600w during the 75s of night.
    One wrinkle: hydrogen is produced only when the slug is fed so H2 out is halved too, averaging 1500g/cycle. Compare that to the electrolyzer which produces 67,200g/cycle of H2 and the hydrogen generator which consumes 60,000g/cycle. The H2 thing is not a significant part of the plug slug's value IMO.

    Tbh, I still think the simple solution are good ol' manual generators coupled with whatever is easily available on the map. If you build the manual generators in a CO2 pit, you can exploit the gasping mechanic to ration your dupes O2 consumption. You can have a dupe producing 400 kw of power about 2/3 of the time for the low price of about 20kg/cycle of 02 (most of which paid for from their own pee) and 1000 kcal of food. If dupes are put on shower time instead of work time, they will pee about twice a day instead of once. If they don't wash their hands, they will get food poisoning once in a while and produce even more pee.
    As a bonus, running on treadmills earns a dupe xp and trains up their athletic and mechanical skills. This means if you want a dupe for another job later, instead of hiring a new dupes and training them from scratch, you can take a dupe from your threadmills instead and instantly have a max athletic, max mech dupe which any perk you need.
    There is also a good synergy between having dupes running on treadmills and growing arbor trees. Petroleum generators produce enough water to make up for most of the water consumption from arbor trees. The small difference, about 7.5 kg of pwater per day per arbor tree, can be taken from dupe pee. Instead of breathing their own Electrolyzed pee, treadmill operators can breath sublimated polluted dirt. A little bit of pdirt can also be composted to feed the arbor trees. And dupes can take their food from slicksters who eat the co2 from your petroleum generator and ethanol distillers. With this, you can have an entirely self sustained ecosystem which produces plenty of power as well as excesses of pdirt, pwater, meat, co2 and a tiny bit of eggshell.

I'm wondering if it'd be possible to create a Plug Slug ranch, where the roof is airflow tiles, with an identical ranch set up specifically for Smog Slugs. Additionally, getting a Sponge Slug ranch in the bottom would net all three types of slugs. With all three working in tandem, they all create hydrogen to ensure the Smogs have enough to not become plugs when they lay eggs, and they procede to act as your air pumps in the night. The sponges are moreso for having all three, but do add to the hydrogen totals, while also letting the player get away with a central fluid tank without pumps. You would need Liquid filters, but that beats having pumps and filters!
    Like I said I could be very mistaken, the Wiki doesn't have much information on Smogs and Sponges, but it seems to me like they're less meant to have their own schtick, and moreso build on the plugs' by making power use as efficient as possible!

      I haven't actually done this, and it seems way more work than just bringing a few tons of coal with you, but it is an option :)

    With all the minute details on the difference between Plug Slug ranching for power and the petrolium gennies, I did miss the same ammount of attention to the Hydrogen gennie for daytime power supplements, considering solar panels are far from being available at the same time Plug Slugs usually are.
    One other thing that could have been a nice addition to this tutorial (atleast for anyone interested in Challenge Runs), would be the Achievement runs: by far, the easiest way to get that annoying achievement on natural, clean and renewable energy; build a Plug Slug ranch, and use all excess hatched eggs (omelettes won't count towards this, sadly) for the Carnivore achievement. This, ofc, requires having these critters on the map in the first place, but that's definately not an issue when starting on the Swampy planetoid where they're wild and free, and way too many roaming around, looking for metal debris 😅
    Yet another great tutorial, @Echo. Klei should have a link to this channel, among a few others, on the main menu of ONI, just to give new players a way of learning the basics.

    Locking a wild smog slug in that box above the ranch would give you a free method to absorb the hydrogen, but you'd want to put the filter outside it's little box so it doesn't inject oxygen or hydrogen into the wrong pipes.

    You brought up that smog slugs can suck up the hydrogen the plug slugs use - that could be used to have a wild-slug ranch in the space above the plug-slug ranch that fills itself with smog slugs, and pump out the hydrogen at no power cost.

    smog slugs might be a great combo with rust deoxidizers, since the deoxidizers drop iron ore and chlorine. using salt vines to dispose of them does use up sand. so, it may be worth using them for that alone. as for the other one, i don't know how to even make a stable for it, since it is an underwater based version. i assume though, that it would make for a powerless pump, since the liquid pump takes 240 watts.

      Only thing that comes to mind with sponges is possibly at the bottom of an industrial brick for liquid cleanup. But this only seems viable if you're expending tons of effort keeping it refrigerated. Hardly seems worth the effort, but then again I have seen quite a few over engineered industrial ice boxes over the years. imo, the variants both seem kinda niche at best. Almost like klei added them to incentivize keeping their ranches properly managed to avoid the variants occurring.

    If you're using volcanos for food, could you use the volcano as a kill chamber? You could have a receptacle instead of a chute in your incubation room, and then a sweeper could load the incubators with priority and then ship the spare eggs back to the hot room.
    If the doomed slugs are producing hydrogen in the steam room you could make a small metal hot box adjacent to the volcano.

      @MaldraediorG Nice. And with some nifty rail system, one could actually use that as an automated cooker for Omelettes.
      Rotate the eggs inside tiles (double layered tiles on the outside of the room, and rail-rotation on the innermost tiles, e.g.), and they'll lose viability, dropping raw eggs into the hot-room. Raw egg turns to omelette at about 73°C, and then ship the Omelettes to a freezer 😁

    About the smog slugs, can you just dump them in the room above to remove the hydrogen you get from you plug slugs? Do they still pump gas if they aren't groomed nor fed? Could you get a self regulating system like this without using a pump? I haven't actually tried, so that's why I'm asking.

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  2 года назад

      Yes you can do this, but if you are using already tame versions of the critter they will need to be replaced more often since they will starve.

    • @Tamizushi
      @Tamizushi 2 года назад

      @@EchoRidgeGaming Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. If the tame plug slugs lay smog plug eggs, it means that hydrogen has accumulated enough that they are now in contact with it. When that happens, just send the eggs to the top room and when the smog plugs hatch they will clear the hydrogen until the hydrogen cloud no longer extends to the bottom room, at which point the plug slugs will stop laying smog slugs. So you get a sept regulating system. Or at least, that’s the theory. The only real advantage over a pump is that you don’t have to power them.

    • @salemprompthous3820
      @salemprompthous3820 2 года назад

      To get wild smog slugs, wrangle a wild plug slug, drop-off inside a closed off area with unbreathables. It'll eventually drop a wild smog slug egg, which can then be placed inside the Hydrogen hat of the plug ranch. The smog slug will live in hydrogen, and have a minimal chance of laying a plug egg. If it does, that one will lay a new smog egg first chance. Tried this myself, with three smog eggs in the room to start, and always had atleast one smog slug working during a 1000cycle test colony.
