I've used these for years! Grip training always seemed "cool" to me. I think the idea of being able to crush things and roll frying pans was really appealing to my teenager self (or even now) And these grippers can work for increasing our crush-style grip strength. That said, there may be some downsides: - They don't train all types of grip strength. While the muscles used may be the same, it's similar to how there are different skills between calisthenics and powerlifting. There's pinching grip, bar grip, rope grip, etc. The crossover isn't as high as one might think. While the grippers can theoretically be used to train these too, it's not how they're designed and there may be more effective and efficient ways for that - Progressing can be difficult after a certain point. These grippers are often in 50lb intervals. While we can get through 100lb, 150lb, and even 200lb fairly smoothly, I've noticed even some fairly strong individuals get stuck around 250lb. The isometrics mentioned in the video are a way around this, but it may help if these were slightly more adjustable. The adjustable ones usually are not as heavy duty, or under 150lb from what I've seen. - Heavy grippers can irritate our joints. While we have the capacity to HOLD tremendous weight, MOVING it is sometimes a different ballgame, especially for the small joints in our fingers. Higher weights on grippers can sometimes cause some knuckle and finger pain if we repeatedly crush them (and we would through training). The isometrics I mention in the video are a way around this. Note that we can still crush with lighter loads and use the isometrics for heavier holds. This may be similar to Jefferson Curls vs Deadlifts. It may be possible that we can adapt our joints to the heavy movement - not sure on the specifics of that. But our muscles adapt faster than our joints and bones, so if you're training close to your limit, your joints are probably out of their depth. That's why these get the rating they do. I don't dislike them at all! But there may be more efficient and effective ways for people to train for their specific grip goals. These aren't necessary for most fitness goals. However, they may have a place for some people! That's my opinion and experience. Have a wonderful and beautiful day!

However, that brand is also much more expensive. If you're starting out, I'd just get a pack of cheaper ones. After you find the weight(s) that you'll spend a long time on, then you can upgrade to the name brand if you want. They might last slightly longer, since these often lose some resistance over time.
when I asked my PT about how I can train my grip strength with loose joints (connective tissue disorder), he gave me a grip putty. my impression is that it does simulate holding better than spring-based grip trainers, which makes it easier on *my* fingers. I wonder if it would be helpful for other people, too, so could you test it out and review?

I am a climber and would strongly recommend a hangboard to any other climbers looking to train finger strength. To anyone who doesn't climb, hangboards are a good option, but be very careful as its essy to damage your pulleys if you use too small a hold to quickly.

@@HybridCalisthenics Any hang board will get the job done, but I'd recommend a wooden one. There's nothing wrong with synthetic, but they're generally lower quality and harder on the hands. I personally own a beastmaker, but I really just picked it because it's the same as the one at my climbing gym. If you're interested in it for climbing, I would recommend one with a variable angle top to practice hanging on slopers.

I love those Captains of Crush grippers. I have the Trainers for warming up and the 1 and 1.5 for working sets. I concentrate on using as much pinky as possible (sometimes I'll even point my index finger straight so that I can't use it, while doing this).
You have to do a video on extension flexors. Sorry if my terminology is off, but I had a ton of wrist and forearm pain that was cruel by that little rubber extension band finger thingy
I don't get a ton of exercise outside of playing sports a couple times a week, but I like to use a grip strength trainer when I'm sitting similarly to a fidgit toy. Even at the max setting (which I think is supposed to be 60 lbs), it doesn't hurt my knuckles, but thinking about it this way, it might be better for me still to lighten it up! I love your positivity!
My dad made a arm weight once where he tied weight to a simple handle with some strong string. The way we used it was rolling the string onto the handle by twisting it with our arms straight out in front of us. It gave our forearms a good workout

Doing holds with these changed a lot for me, but honestly, just holding onto things in general (bars, barbells, pinch gripping weights, etc.) made the biggest difference.
I want to note just how important finger extension training is. My brother and I have both had wrist pain from using our grip all day at work. Once we started training extension with rubber bands, all the wrist pain went away
Holding kettlebells horizontally only supported by grip, palm up or down. can also do palm in for wrist/forearm stability, all static stuff. I’ve also seen weight tied to center of thick rod by a rope long enough to wrap around many times as you hold it in front of you and roll it, not just a forearms thing
You can also do a lot of grip training with rice! While sticking your hand in a bucket of rice as resistance, you can do all sorts of wrist, forearm, and grip exercises. Would love to see what you think of that idea!
As someone who tried many of these I things. DO NOT get the plastic ones with a counting mechanism. The convenience isn't worth it since those easily break if you use them extensively, aka multiple hundred presses a day. The style you're reviewing here are the ones I ended up with that are actually durable enough for prolonged use without any sign of wear.
One reason that I like the David Horne's basic routine is that covers mostly all the bases, but ultimately its still very safe vs grippers that in some people will lead to tendinopathy in their thumb/pointer/middle finger extensor tendons. Even worse, some people just get spontaneous ruptures, especially of the pointer finger.
Mad respect to you bruh but the metal ones and wood ones with similar structure are just goated, they made my forearms go from like 7 or 8 inches (or maybe lesser)to 11 inches+ in like a year of half consistent training and made my grip and armwrestling mad af
I have one that has the adjustable tension, and I've seen alot of people talking down on em. They are nice imo cause I can just lower it for my son/daughter then crank it back to max for me. Its around 125ish? So yeah, 6 out a 10 is honest!
nice ! I used this gripper as well as extension train as a theraphy when I had mild fracture on my hand. it works decently, but you want to start out light to engage the correct muscle (if you're injured), otherwise you would left out the correct muscle and compensate with other one. please do a gyroball review hampton, I want to see how it compares to grip
My favorite grip strength exercise is finding a block of metal that I can just barely get my fingers to the edge of, then holding it off the floor and trying to rotate my wrist.
I like them and you're right about the knuckles For me it's the palms because I'm using the 150 for my left hand trying to catch it up to my right hand which is using the 200 and at 200 just kills my palms
just for the record for any other climbers out there: these kinda suck for training climbing-specific grip strength. They still work, they're just slower/less effective than a good hangboard routine
Farmer carry is pretty cool. Just need big dumbbells. Or big anything else really. Just pick up something heavy and hard to hold (but safe) then hold it as long as possible (and safely)
I have one of those, and it's already gotten my forearms about as big and strong as I realistically need for the foreseeable future. If I decide I want more, I'll probably try to build muscle using dumbbell wrist curls and wrist extensions, rather than training technique with a heavier spring gripper.

Not all grippers are created equal. Most brands sell Grippers with suspiciously round numbers, this will help you weed out the bs brands.

There's a gripper in the shape of a ring, sold in a climbing franchise (Decathlon), which I found very refreshing to use.

I have one of those, and it's already gotten my forearms about as big and strong as I realistically need for the foreseeable future. If I decide I want more, I'll probably try to build muscle using dumbbell wrist curls and wrist extensions, rather than training technique with a heavier spring gripper.

They make other tools for exercising different parts of your hands. Also for training your fingertips nothing beats the hangers that rock climbers use

also make sure to not overuse these if you already train grip. i got a forearm injury because i was doing both this and pullups everyday along with a normal gym routine
