Overall a nice and tidy introduction to the madhhab. I can't be too critical, as I've been a practising Muslim for 20 years and a student of the Zaydi madhhab for the last four or five. I would like to voice my appreciation for you at least pointing out that the division of views regarding the Sahabah into Batri, Jarudi, Sulaymani, etc. didn't reflect a reality on the ground. And that is indeed the case, as heresiographers like al-Shahrastani (author of al-Milal wa al-Nihal) seemed to be rather fond of such artificial stratification. In reality, the spectrum of opinions on them are scattered amongst scholars and Imams of the madhhab (e.g. with some Imams favouring 'tardiyyah' [saying 'May Allah be pleased with him'] for al-Shaykhayn [Abu Bakr and Umar] and others adopting 'tawaqquf'). You also mentioned the 'Hadawi' school, which I feel the need to point out is more like a Sunni madhhab of fiqh (and historically there were others, e.g. Nasiri and Rassi), and the one practised in the mainstream by the Zaydis of Yemen today. And regarding the portion highlighting the affinity between the Mu'tazilah and the Zaydis, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Manekdim (a famous commentator on the Usul al-Khamsah of al-Qadi 'Abd al-Jabbar) was actually a Zaydi Imam himself!
Many shias abandoned Zayd ibn Ali in his rebellion against the umayyads because he refused to curse Abu Bakr Siddique and Umar ibn Al Khattab, and he said "they ruled according to the Qur’an". Also, one of the major supporters of Zayds rebellion was Imam Abu Hanifa (foudner of one of the main Sunni schools of Fiqh).
Not true! Zayd ibn Ali had been order by Jafar Al Sadiq to stop fighting & use passive aggressive against Umayyad & focus on teaching Islam. Not cos he refused to curse.
Gosh, I wish I could easily understand all this and preserve that knowledge in me, but I find it so hard! To be honest, the difference between different christian reformation movements has been hammered in my head since middle school(north eastern european here - baltic actually), but I'm sure, for someone raised muslim it's as hard to grasp different reformation movements. In any case - I've been watching your videos for good several years and I don't think I thanked you yet. So I am amending that oversight - thank you so SO much, Sir, for selflessly sharing your knowledge and insights and for making the internet a smarter place to be in. 🥳🥳🥳
From what I've read in my historical research, Zaydism grew prominent at least in the Southern Caspian (I'm not sure how similar the situation is for Yemen) because it was the fringe of the Islamic world in the 8th/9th centuries. Many Alid proto-Shias went there in order to escape Caliphal authority and they managed to gain many converts and supporters in the area which had been up to that point less influenced by Islam (many were still Zoroastrians). This is why it is assumed that the Daylamite Buyid emirs (Daylam being in Northern Iran on the Caspian coast) were originally Zaydis before embracing Twelver Shi'ism, though others have suggested that they may have been Twelvers from the start, and that Twelver/Imami missionaries also had a presence in the area for similar reasons.
Our maternal family are Sunnis and from the descendants of Sayyidina Zayd bin Ali and his son Sayyidina Yahya who also organised an uprising. One of our ancestors in the family lineage leading up to Zayd was called Sayyid Dawood Buzurg who was the governor of Kufa. Of course some many deny this, but it’s reported that Sayyidina Zayd was deserted by many of his supporters after showing unwavering support and respect for Sayyidina Abu Bakr as Sideeq and Sayyidina Umar رضي الله تعالى عنهم After this he called them the ‘Rafida’ which is term used for Shias today meaning something like rejectors.
Thank you for this fantastic explanation, it gets so confusing when description just goes into the succession and never says what that means in how theology, life, practices, etc are approached. Your explanation really shows the vibrant and living differences within the Muslim world. Thank you.
A pleasure to listen your researches in particular on religions. A thousand congratulations. you follow the lineage of ancient thinkers and philosopher.
something even Muslims do not know usually is that there are five rightly guided caliphs ; as Al Hassan son of Ali is also considered one but is overlooked because he was both the last and only ruled for six months.
Can you do a video on the Bektashi Sufi Order , they I believe even believe in the 12 imams like the 12er shias they are Sufis but also fall under the Shia category. It be interesting to learn it from you being an expert on sufism 😊
The king of Morocco should convert to zaydism and claim to be the imam. There's at least three great reasons for him to do so : - he can, since Hasan ibn Ali is his ancestor. - that would be a great reclaiming of the roots of his country, since Morocco was founded by Idris I, a zaydi imam himself. - that would really annoy Algeria, and as far as I understand it, that seems to be one of the main political goal of Morocco.
I think this person , knows more about Islam than some Muslims who born in the faith. I think instead of trying to debate , how about studying more and learn.
Please make a video on Baba Bulle Shah a Punjabi Sufi poet. I have seen all of your videos about sufis and they are exceptional and at the same time informational. I truly admire your work and pray that you keep presenting it in the best way possible Assalam o Alikum.

Discussing just Sunni and Shi'a is much like discussing just Protestantism and Catholicism. It ignores the existence of other ancient churches such as Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, and the Assyrian Church, as well as the distinction between, say, Lutherans, Quakers, Baptists, and LDS.
It totally different, the Protestant and catholic were one before schism their foundation never had difference but rather created it after milliniels, regard to Shia sunni they were seperate from start as Ali and mauwiya put sword on each other throat and tensions with previous rulers
Most of these Shia sects are extinct, from the first, Kaysanism, until now, so many have formed and went extinct, even subsects went extinct like Hafizism a branch of Mustalism, a branch of Ismaelism. Speaking of Isma'Eliyyah, Ismaelism is nearly extinct aswell, the largest branch being Nizarism / Nizariyyah, and they got just 1 scholar who knows more about the faith than The Nizari Isma'Eli Imam himself. Ismaelism is on the brink of extinction. Zaydism / Zaidiyyah are going strong but not much of info is avaliable on them in English and other languages, mostly Arabic and maybe Farsi
@@sus527- Catholic and Eastern Orthodox were one before the Great Schism of 1054. Oriental Orthodoxy split off in a schism following the Council of Chalcedon in 451. The Assyrian Church split off in a schism following the Council of Ephesus in 431. Talking about JUST Catholicism gives the appearance that there is one orthodoxy, one set of rituals, one history, which is flat-out a lie. Not to mention that there were three distinct phases of the Reformation: the first wave of "We are Catholic but reformed" which gave rise to Lutheranism, the second wave of "We are rebuilding Christianity" which gave rise to Calvinism and derivatives, and the third wave of "Screw this, we are throwing everything away to find authentic, ancient Christianity" that gave rise to the Quakers and Anabaptists.
I recently wrote a paper on the impact of the VOC on trade in Yemen, specifically on the coffee trade and also came across the zaydis and their wars (which they called jihads, I didn’t know that was possible between muslims) against the ottomans. Funny to see your video on it now afterwards, I found Zaydism very interesting, but my topic was very different.
As a Itna Ashari Shia ( twelver) who is a Syed Zaidi, we are descended from Zaid ibn Ali who is the first imam of the Zaidis I didn't know there was a sect called Zaidism. I just assumed when people said Zaidis they were speaking about us, very interesting learning about our cousins in fiqh.
A main thing that shia's and muslims in general (but mainly shi'a) is the idea that Allah can send prophets through any seed of abraham, and affirms that the lineage of Muhammad, through ancestors and offspring are also qualified to be elected as future prophets or saints for the end times, it's mainly the idea that Allah had opened his pool of candidates so that certain groups of people can not solely claim that real prophets or real elects of the true most high God (Allah) are restricted to any sort of qualifications, especially man decided qualifications. Like John the Baptist said "God can raise any one of these stones to be children of Abraham."
What was the reason behind the shia to adopt mutazilism as the foundation of their early theological doctrine than any other early kalam school such as Qadari, Jahmiyya, or even traditionist themselves?
Wasil ibn Ata, the founder of the Mu'tazila school, was closely linked to Imam Ali. Also, this logical approach was heavily pushed by Imam Jafar as-Saddiq, which even the Zaydi respect. Sunni Islam was also mostly ratified as a set of doctrines during the 1100s, and the reason based methodology was mostly removed from this newly merged sect to differentiate themselves from the Shia.
Well timed. I'm surprised you made no mention of how Zaiydism's notion of an Imam who "fights against oppressive regime" is directly behind the Houthis movement - it's civil war with Aden and it's more recent decision to cause trouble for israel's allies. .
The current activity of the houthi pirates neither targets exclusively, nor particularly harms The IDF and instead by disrupting maritime trade, has significantly increased cost of shipping for all goods passing through the region which leads to disastrous impacts broadly. Houthi leadership has claimed to only target Israeli vessels, which turned out to be a lie, to hurt Israel and help the Palestinians in Gaza, which I have trouble believing given their actions and the consequences of those actions. I don't believe their current actions constitute fighting oppression, and even if it may be perceived that way from within.
@@benjaminjenkins2384 "disasterous impacts abroad" Good if the palestinians are starving than i don't care how much more money you need to pay for your amazon package. Besides they never blockaded that streight before the israelis started genociding the palestinians.

(with the minor caveat that there's always room for a little doubt when trying to read current affairs without the benefit of historical hindsight or research, of course) From the perspective of religious studies, though, it certainly matters most how the Houthi Zaydis see themselves, right? Those large public demonstrations by militants in Dana's really fit the aspect of Zaydism described. If I am honest, I can't say I find this particular branch of Islam to be very socially or politically healthy. I try not to judge, but ... Sometimes a religion sect really does deserve criticism.
@@RobespierreThePoof I think like broadly, looking at the way religious communities see themselves is almost certainly the worst way to find out about them. Deep south Christians think they're loving but are the biggest pushers of homophobia in the states, for example.

Freedom from Saudi/US, or from Iran/Russia, or both? Gulf of A'aden implies that it used to be neither Arab nor Persian. But the old civilizations are gone. When you free Yemen... who is in charge, after that? The ones who attack the cargo ships, or the ones who hang out in the hotel? There has to be a better way. I wish the right local people can find that way, and that the infighting between factions who are bribed, and propped up, by foreign money can go away. The first thing - the ones who attack the cargo ships say that they do it because Israel attacks Gaza. Well, there's only one way to find out - stop attacking Gaza (continuing after the holidays), and see if the people in Yemen stop attacking cargo ships. That's the obvious first step. So far, they'd rather drive the ships all the way around Africa, than to stop attacking Gaza... so there's an impasse. That's what's holding up any path forward - Yemen is suffering because Iran is using them as proxy in the Israel/Gaza fight, which is wrong, and 2 wrongs don't make a right. And yet, despite that, they're correct that the obvious first step is for Israel to stop attacking, destroying, harrassing - whatever you want to call what they've been doing - to Gaza. I agree, we don't negotiate with terrorists yadda yadda, so just stop attacking Gaza, and let the humanitarian aid people do their jobs. There's no need to negotiate with any terrorists for that. Then, IDK how on Earth to attract foreign investment to Yemen that isn't terrible for the people of Yemen... which, unless they're sitting on a mountain of gold, is necessary for their prosperity and freedom from corruption both local and foreign.

I am from Zaidi ( Zaydi) progeny but may not be follower of 'Zaidism'. The fact is that there was no difference in terms of practicing Islamic prayers and rituals across all muslims in that time. Therefore this becomes insignificant which practices to be adopted now. Million thanks for sharing these details 🎉

Of course some many deny this, but it’s reported that Sayyidina Zayd was deserted by many of his supporters after showing unwavering support and respect for Sayyidina Abu Bakr as Sideeq and Sayyidina Umar رضي الله تعالى عنهم
After this he called them the ‘Rafida’ which is term used for Shias today meaning something like rejectors.

The king of Morocco should convert to zaydism and claim to be the imam. There's at least three great reasons for him to do so :
- he can, since Hasan ibn Ali is his ancestor.
- that would be a great reclaiming of the roots of his country, since Morocco was founded by Idris I, a zaydi imam himself.
- that would really annoy Algeria, and as far as I understand it, that seems to be one of the main political goal of Morocco.

Not really a good comparison innit?
80% of Shia are Twelver, Zaidiyyah are really only in Yemen. Ismaelism is just a cult that's nearly extinct now.

Great topic, I like how you mention both Sunni and Shia are not monolithic movements.
Didn't even know you did music too. Wow. Always wondered about the intro song and now I found it in Spotify. It's great.
It was mentioned that some ismailis don't take Hassan as an imam, than how they see them? The imamate just passed down to Hussein after Ali?
Shia didn't adopt any of their beliefs, having similar beliefs doesn't mean it was taken from them

From the perspective of religious studies, though, it certainly matters most how the Houthi Zaydis see themselves, right? Those large public demonstrations by militants in Dana's really fit the aspect of Zaydism described.
If I am honest, I can't say I find this particular branch of Islam to be very socially or politically healthy. I try not to judge, but ... Sometimes a religion sect really does deserve criticism.
@@RobespierreThePoof I think like broadly, looking at the way religious communities see themselves is almost certainly the worst way to find out about them. Deep south Christians think they're loving but are the biggest pushers of homophobia in the states, for example.

Free Yemen
