  • The snake roll is a change-of-direction cast that helps you make a quick transition from having your line hanging straight downstream to shooting it out in front of you. Much like a roll cast, It's extremely helpful to know in situations where you don't have much back cast room.
    By tracing a lower-case "e" with your rod tip, you will re-position your line by 90 degrees. Then all you do is make a standard roll-cast presentation. It may look complicated or difficult, but in reality it is a very simple motion and cast to learn. ORVIS casting instructor Peter Kutzer will get you snake rolling your way out of a tricky casting situation in no time after watching this lesson.

    Finally I found a casting series that combines the theoretical and practical sides of fly casting in an easy to understand way. You are a brilliant teacher Peter.

    Towards the bank, away from bank, smooth acceleration. This terminology helped a lot. Thanks.

    Wow just seeing this out of the box ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

    Is it possible to learn to use a fly rod from a sitting position? I have been trying to get someone to teach me. I know there is a program for disabled veterans and they would not do this if it were not possible if a guy cannot wade or stand a long time. I tie flies for fun and have sold some. I would love to learn to fish my flies. All the best, Sean

    Hi Pete. In this video you are demonstrating the cast for a river flowing left to right. Is the motion the same if the river is flowing from right to left?

    Thanks Orvis for your videos. Of course, this 3 minute video is simplified. A snake roll is a Spey Cast so I would like to add some complementary Spey terminology:
    1) Facing downstream, to your left is Left Bank/River Left and to your right is Right Bank/River Right.
    2) Spey casts are categorized by 1) Downstream wind or Upstream wind casts and 2) type of anchor, a) airborne( AKA splash and go) and b) waterborne (AKA sustained )
    3) A Snake Roll cast is a Downstream Wind/ Airborne (Splash and Go) cast.
    Now...to test your understanding...
    If you are casting right-handed, casting from Right Bank and the wind is blowing Downstream this is an acceptable cast, if you are on Left Bank or River Left you would have to cast Back-Handed/Cack-Handed. In other words, the wind must be blowing the D-Loop away from your body and casting shoulder for all Spey casts. Another acceptable cast for downstream wind would be Double Spey (waterborne anchor). (Cack-handed on Left Bank also).
    Acceptable casts for Upstream Wind would be Single Spey (airborne anchor) and the Snap T (waterborne anchor).
    I am not an expert. Single and Double Handed Spey casting in addition to Pontooning has opened up a whole new world for me..that includes Tree/shrub lined streams and rivers with less fishing pressure, Stillwater, Oceans, Back-Bays, even Surf Casting.
    Spey Casts are basically roll casts that change direction.

    But what's the actual point of a snake roll vs a regular roll? Is it incase a regular roll won't get out enough line in 1 cast?

    • @brianhall137
      @brianhall137 2 года назад

      It's purpose is to change the direction of the cast...you can't make an efficient change of direction with a standard roll cast. Example: If you are quartering downstream and and retrieving line 45 degrees from where it was cast, you can't efficiently re-cast to the starting point without aerializing the cast to change its direction.

    ....Why can't I just simply flick my line upstream? Seems excessive just to reposition the fly after it completes a drift.

    • @LuBearr
      @LuBearr 9 лет назад

      +BTNHarmony18 you could depending on the wind and the weights of your fly and line. Also, when you have a lot of line out with a streamer thats a few feet underwater, you're not gonna be able to just flick the line upstream.

      This technique is also great if you have obstructions behind you such as trees or bushes or higher ground that may get in the way.

      Valid question- and weird that people are snotty about it... I'd say you probably want to make a snap-T spey style cast in this scenario.

    I find some of these vids by Orvis helpful, but what bothers me is that they never have line out past 20'. Now if you fish tiny creeks, fine, but there's a whole bunch of people who fish ponds and need real world distance. (50-60ft min). Camera angle can be highly misleading such as one of the Roll Cast Vids where it looks like he's shooting 60-80 feet. (maybe with a heavy shooting head)...Come one guy's lets be a bit more forth coming and honest.
