  • The third episode of season two of RIO's "How To" series features RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth teaching, demonstrating and explaining "How To Make a Roll Cast". In this film, Simon covers the three most important things to learn in order to make a perfect roll cast. In addition, Simon shows which is the ideal line to help beginners learn this essential cast.
    RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

    For me, Simon Gawesworth is the ultimate fly fishing teacher and as an autodidact these videos are the most valuable and really helped me to get my casts the way I want them to be. I would not have made it that fast without them. Thank you, Simon for the ob point explanation and pointing out the mistakes many people make and thank you Rio for making these videos!

    Is there any reason to use a switch cast in place of a roll cast? I find the switch cast easier than the roll cast. Thanks for all you have given this wonderful sport.

    can you do a roll cast with a sinking leader and standing in moving water? particularly if you're trying to cast upstream

  • @jandebeer1508
    @jandebeer1508 5 лет назад +1

    How would you make a roll cast if you not standing in the water but on the shore. there is no opportunity to make a nice "D- Loop" next to you, because
    your line than in the grass. ? I live in the Nederlands, and a have to deal with this situations very often.

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  5 лет назад +2

      It gets a little harder from the shore, and you need a smaller D-loop, as a result. There is an "energy ratio" in the roll cast that simply means the smaller the D-loop, the more power you have to apply as caster, so when you can only create a small D-loop, you need to use more power on the forward cast - for a given length of line. The other option is just to accept you will make shorter casts.

    Can you use this Single handed line with a 8'6 or would it be too short of a rod?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  3 года назад

      No, it wouldn't be a problem at all. Maybe once you get to a 7ft rod, the longer head would cause problems, but not on one that is 8' 6" for certain

  • @johnholmes4960
    @johnholmes4960 2 года назад

    What weight is the line and rod. What is the rod length. How much line should I start with?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  2 года назад

      It was a 9ft, 5wt rod, medium fast in action. We checked with Simon on how much line to use and he said that if you were using that single handed Spey line, you would need the color change off the reel - minimum - for it to work perfectly, just because of the taper design. That would be about 24ft outside the rod.

      @@RIOPRODUCTS thanks, my last question is what would a normal distance to shoot for......and.......should I go for accuracy first or distance?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  2 года назад

      If you can learn to add a haul to your roll cast, and use a line specifically designed for roll casting,@@johnholmes4960, you will be able to shoot several feet. Without the haul, you can still shoot some, but a lot less. We'd suggest working on getting tight loops and effortless casts first, then move to distance.

    Send it back up the pipe or for baseball/softball players send the fly right back to the pitcher.
