  • The second episode of season two of RIO's "How To" series features RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth teaching, demonstrating and explaining "How To Perfect A Forward Cast". In this film Simon explains what to look for in a good forward cast, and shows the three commonest casting mistakes people tend to make on their forward cast. The film is an excellent instructional tool for improving the forward cast, and explains how to easily recognize what is going wrong by watching the loop on the forward cast.
    RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

    The best instruction series I've watched. Simon Gawesworth is professional perfection. This video and the others with Mr. Gawesworth are an investment in time rather than a waste time. I wish I came across this series years ago but I'm glad I've found them regardless. Thank you Mr. Gawesworth, you deserve praise.

    Good info Simon. As a 21 year guide, I always tell my beginners to "pause relax" their arm when they reach the stop position on the back cast. This prevents creep and enforces the turnover timing of the back cast.

    I found an old fly rod in the attic about two years ago. Tried for the past couple of years to learn on my own how to cast, which was becoming quite frustrating, and I was beginning to lose interest in fly fishing. Found this video, and it improved my cast 100 fold, which has allowed me to love fly fishing. Thanks!

    I read the other comments people made and I agree with them, excellent instructional video. He is a very good teacher, I am learning much and I can't wait to get back out on the water and try the techniques to improve my casting, as well as avoid the bad casts, like the creep and the others. I'll be happy when I am consistently making good casts instinctually, like I do when I'm spin casting. It's going to be so nice to watch that line roll out to perfection and the fly looking like it just landed like a real fly. Thanks to Simon and Rio for these well put together instructional videos.

    Hi nice video
    I have a question.
    When I cast forward the fly is tangling down before it goes forward. Why?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  3 года назад +1

      We asked Simon and he said it sounds like you have a "tailing loop", which he talked about in this video. If that is the problem, your acceleration is not smooth enough. Hope that helps a little...

    • @raymelvinchan
      @raymelvinchan 3 года назад

      I think I use force too much or acceleration on my forward cast. The question is how to avoid that?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  3 года назад +1

      @@raymelvinchan try and remember the acronym "SSFF" - Start Slow, Finish Fast for each casting stroke...

    What am I doing wrong when I cast and my fly line is leading my fly instead of the fly leading the fly line... Hope that makes sense. It's almost like an exaggerated "S" if you will. Doesn't happen all the time but it definitely happens more than I'd like it to. 👍🎣

    • @RIOPRODUCTS

      Sounds like your forward cast is climbing too high - caused by hitting the forward cast too hard, too early
