The best songs allow the listener to interpet lyrics on a personal level, one song can stir different emotions and meaning to different people. Martin is a master at writing like this.
Since no one answered, I will : the "theremin like" sound is an electric guitar with an e-bow. It's like a string bow, it makes the chosen string oscillate with a electromagnet system. It allows to obtain this continous sound, like making your guitar cry. In the DTS 5.1 version, the guitar is more saturated, which adds a bit of rage to the sadness.
This one is in my all-time top 3 of Depeche Mode. It's a masterpiece. Nothing more to say. And the Devotional live version was even better. When you listen to this, it will be S++ rank.
Oh boy great reaction...the production of this song is crazy ...so much layering of sounds ...also you must see this live in the epic devotional tour...❤❤❤
Love ur honesty. Watch 10 Live from Depeche and understand. First band besides the Stones to sell out the Rose Bowl in Cali...Dude your rawness is inssne...thank u 4 being you!
It’s marvelous. Well, actually, the album “Songs of Faith and Devotion” itself is also marvelous, taking the “dark and sentimental” tone that started with “Violator” one step further. So did the albums that followed.
It's one of my favorite songs from this album! Als ich diesen Song 1997 das erste Mal hörte, war ich hin und weg, obwohl ich den Text nicht verstanden hatte. Es waren einfach die Musik, die Atmosphäre und Daves Stimme zusammen.
They recently did this song in the piano room with a live orchestra and Dave did the interview for this which goes between each song they did which was 3, one old, one new and one cover (Walking In My Shoes, Ghosts Again and Sundown) and the interviewer because they had U2 also doing the Piano room to obviously promote Songs of Surrender which was an album that came out a week before Memento Mori said that this is a song that Bono (from U2) wished he had written this song as he put in it his 40 songs that saved his life playlist.
Id say this is up there with one of my favourite DM songs. It sucks to think this was when the band was falling apart at this period. Dave was a struggling heroin addict causing him to die for a minute, Martin was a alcoholic coming in and out from the hospital, Andy with depression and stress seizures and Alan having kidney stones then leaving because of the tensions rising
Great reaction once again. Not sure if it was mentioned before but you have to give props to Flood for producing SOFAD and Violater. He was the one who pushed them into this harder/heavier sound. And in my opinion gave us not only the best 2 DM albums but the best 2 albums ever made.
This album is at the height of their (DM) "power"- This song is up there for sure as one of their all time best, awesome song and incredible lyrics- very appealing to DM Devotees - but the live version absolutely KILLS ! Much better.
Perhaps one of Gore's best lyrics. Only when you see the video clip will you fully understand this cult. An abnormal anthem live. Two days ago, almost 40 thousand people, all dressed in black, sang together with Dave and Martin this perfection live in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Lyrics, bassline, melody in the background…. Just a timeless masterpiece! The arrangements of the sounds, espessially at the end is Alan Wilder in Bestform🥰
Songs of faith and Devotion is a masterpiece almost every song could have been a single… They done something completely different more organic in musical directions they never tried before… without telling you anything, just to tease you, you will be blown and surprise all along… « Condemnation », « In your Room » (LP version only), « One Caress », « Get right with me » and all the others…
I can’t wait till you hear this song from the devotional tour, it’ll give you goosebumps it’s that good and the visualisation is fantastic. Even though I feel that violator is my favourite album, the devotional tour just everything came together! Great reaction. This song can be interpreted in so many different ways. It’s a typical Martin song, brilliant in its simplicity and also devious!
The intro of this song came from an audio cassette that had some problems and they really liked what happened with the first sound. Martin explained this in a interview.
Great reaction Seph ! Indeed Walking In My Shoes is a masterpiece on all levels (lyric and production wise). As many members of your channel mentioned before, this is the very last album Alan Wilder got heavily involved in as well as the two tours that followed (The devotional Tour in 1993 and the Exotic/Summer Tour in 1994). For the 3rd song of the album (Condemnation), you should really react to both versions of the song at the same time : the single/video version called the "Paris Mix" and the album version which has more percussions but feel a bit more linear. Anyways, this is another gem from SOFAD for sure and Dave's best recorded vocals ever ! :) The video is really worth a watch !
Glad this one got to you... brilliant lyrics, lush sounds and layers, those voices... and a video you must check out! And this song isn't even in my top 10 DM. I actually got tired of it for a few years but recently I've been back to fully appreciating it.
This song is on top 10. This is a masterpiece. So Seph, when you do the "Songs Of Faith And Devotion - LIVE" you gonna hear this one as a live version - even better!! ......Over and out, from Sweden......
The album is even better than Violator in my opinion. They had conquered the world in the two previous albums this cemented their position as global music legends. You should watch some of the Devotional concert, especially the live version of this. Another whole level. Also the live version I Feel You from the same tour shows their stadium performing credentials.
It’s so hard to choose or place a tag on “best Depeche Mode’s song “ There are so many , but definitely this one is up there. In your room ( album version ) Barrel of a gun (ultra) Home ( Ultra)
Hi Seph, because of his addiction Dave had to go to a vocal coach, but I don’t know whether it was before the final recording of the album or before the devotional tour. His voice was rawer due to the drugs.
It‘s their best album, if you ask me. I live and love this song, hard to say if this is the best. You need to listen to the whole album. I recommend a completely dark room, a blanket and a pair of Neumann Headphones. You‘ll learn to fly Greetings from Germany
"Depeche Mode - Walking In My Shoes ft. BBC Concert Orchestra (Radio 2 Piano Room)" is a stunning and unique version from 2023. Maybe you can react to it in the future. :)
If you think Dave's voice sounds better just wait until the next track on this album....Condemnation. That's his best vocals EVER! I believe he himself thinks so too....
This is the single version btw, in my opinion the album version’s better That sound in the beginning is a harpsichord with effects on it (effects that would usually be used on a guitar) layered over piano- it was inspired by the sound of a cassette they played in the studio. The drums during the verses are sampled from a rap song, layered with Alan playing a hihat and him playing a snare on separate tracks (and probably a kick drum too) Also that solo is played on guitar, using an eBow and slide to get that unique sound. It’s layered with that same line played without an eBow and with heavier distortion, but it’s difficult to hear since they’re layered so well- or it could just be the same recording with different effects.
You've listened to the single version, the album version is 20 seconds longer and goes a little deeper. I just hope that you listen to the album version of "In Your Room" first and not the Zyphermix 7 inch. single version.☝
Very powerful song this, in every way. This has always been on my "top-10 list" of Depeche Mode songs. It has beauty, blackness, nerve, drive with an intelligent text and a typical distinctive (Alan Wilder) Depeche mode sound - although the sound is developed here in relation to previous records. I hear you are listening to the single version of the song. The difference is barely audible compared to the album version, so it's perfectly fine. BUT when you get to song no. 6 on the album; "in your room" be sure that you are then playing and listening to the album version and not the single version. The single version, which was released after the album, is completely redone with a completely different sound and soundscape, and in my opinion the song has completely lost it. The album version of "in your room" is also definitely on my top 10 list of Dpeche mode sogs, while the single version isn't even close to being on any such list.
I know Dave was known to around this time be taking lots of steroids for his vocal cords on the tours..i i wonder if at this time he was on them heavily for this album, to also help compensate for his heavy drug use and what it may be doing to his voice. But also he got in his I must be a rocker kind of mindset because of Grunge ,so maybe he went heavier in his vocals in studio.
Awesome song but the lyrics make me laugh a little only if you think of them literally about Martin's life: "Oh the poor pop star who's had all his dreams come true, whaa!" Joking aside, this and the whole album has some of the most dense production. The beginning sound is like three sounds layered, piano, harpsichord and something else. Alan has said this is one of his favorite songs they ever did. To me this is the start of Phase 2 for the band, whereas Violator was the last "pure" Depeche album, this is when everything changed. Even the singles and remixes changed. The sound that sounds like a therimum (mispelled, sorry) is Martin playing on one guitar string with this sort of vibrational device. (Stop it!) 😂
One of Martin's best songs... with Alan's best music.
It's not a theremin, it's a guitar with Ebow and you can even see Martin play it in live session and concert.
Love from Italy
I love that DM adds scratsches, noises and "ugly" sounds to give edge to their songs. Makes them unique and genuine.
The best songs allow the listener to interpet lyrics on a personal level, one song can stir different emotions and meaning to different people. Martin is a master at writing like this.
In the documentary for this particular album, Martin points out that even though Dave was on drugs, everytime he did a vocal it was amazing.
This is the thing about DM they wrote so many great songs.
Very much deserve their place in the R&R HOF across in Cleveland, Ohio.
This one is in my all-time top 3 of Depeche Mode. It's a masterpiece. Nothing more to say.
And the Devotional live version was even better. When you listen to this, it will be S++ rank.
And this version of DM with the BBC Concert Orchestra ruclips.net/video/lok52VfIE_c/видео.html
The song is so deep, so heavy and yet so beautifully melancholic. An incredible masterpiece
DM singing this song with the BBC Concert Orchestra is beautiful. ruclips.net/video/lok52VfIE_c/видео.html
Oh boy great reaction...the production of this song is crazy ...so much layering of sounds ...also you must see this live in the epic devotional tour...❤❤❤
it was 90% Alan
@@DxModel219 agreed💯
Best single track they've done imo. It's just a great tune with great lyrics.
A perfect track. The production, the atmosphere, the sounds, the lyrics and the vocals. Top notch.
The bassline of this song is dope as hell, indeed
Love ur honesty. Watch 10 Live from Depeche and understand. First band besides the Stones to sell out the Rose Bowl in Cali...Dude your rawness is inssne...thank u 4 being you!
Wait is "10" a song? 😂
It’s marvelous. Well, actually, the album “Songs of Faith and Devotion” itself is also marvelous, taking the “dark and sentimental” tone that started with “Violator” one step further. So did the albums that followed.
These guys made Just Can't Get Enough
The "distorted piano are a mix betwen emax gran piano and synthcalver with chourus and flanger effect
It's one of my favorite songs from this album! Als ich diesen Song 1997 das erste Mal hörte, war ich hin und weg, obwohl ich den Text nicht verstanden hatte. Es waren einfach die Musik, die Atmosphäre und Daves Stimme zusammen.
So ging es mir damals auch. Genialer Song!

Best song and best video ever by dM!
This album is at the height of their (DM) "power"- This song is up there for sure as one of their all time best, awesome song and incredible lyrics- very appealing to DM Devotees - but the live version absolutely KILLS ! Much better.
This version of them singing with the BBC Concert Orchestra is great. ruclips.net/video/lok52VfIE_c/видео.html
The live Devotional tour version is just on another level
Perhaps one of Gore's best lyrics. Only when you see the video clip will you fully understand this cult. An abnormal anthem live. Two days ago, almost 40 thousand people, all dressed in black, sang together with Dave and Martin this perfection live in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Hey! What you hear in that instrumental parts is Martin playing his guitar with an E-bow (a device that helps to create a similar effect of a violin)
Lyrics, bassline, melody in the background…. Just a timeless masterpiece!
The arrangements of the sounds, espessially at the end is Alan Wilder in Bestform🥰
Uwielbiam 🖤
Oh My! Wonderful reaction Seph! EPIC Song my friend (Especially Live)! So many layers ..... Fantastic as always! Cheers!!!
This is sooooo powerful---------------
I love this band !!!
Hi seph thanks its a masterpiece, banger
The clip of this song and the live version are masterpiece
Love the melody to this song such a moving track my fave from this album

Great reaction! You need to see this video clip.... and the ones for I Feel You, and next song Condemnation as well.
Yes another great reaction from seph. Can't wait till you react to rush on the live devotional tour : )
Walking in my shoes ist the best ever,
А эту песню я считаю однозначно, без всяких но, величайшей песней DM.
This album is so good!
The intro of this song came from an audio cassette that had some problems and they really liked what happened with the first sound. Martin explained this in a interview.
Great reaction. This was the single mix by the way
Great reaction Seph ! Indeed Walking In My Shoes is a masterpiece on all levels (lyric and production wise). I still in shock how much Dave's voice has improved. It's like hes a different person entirely from his first album!!
This song is on top 10. This is a masterpiece.
So Seph, when you do the "Songs Of Faith And Devotion - LIVE" you gonna hear this one as a live version - even better!! ......Over and out, from Sweden......
Live version of Dave with the BBC Concert Orchestra ruclips.net/video/lok52VfIE_c/видео.html
For sure one of the best! Curous about the next one ;)
Chorus starts with "You'll stumble In my footsteps". Very deep message. DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE TOO QUICK, You don't know them outside
The album is even better than Violator in my opinion. They had conquered the world in the two previous albums this cemented their position as global music legends. Hello again Seph, you must listen this song live in Berlín 2014 or the rehearsal walking in my shoes
Ahhh one of my *FAVES* ‼ Wow, thanks Seph!! This song is INTENSE! 😘😘
*THOSE DRUMS ALONE* 🥁🥁🥁
It's like dave is a different person!! Insane the progression to be fair!
You gotta listen to the Ambient Whale Mix of this song. So fun.
OK Im being serious you made me say the words "AMBIENT WHALE MIX" out loud hahahahhahahhahahhaahaha
molto molto bella...qui alan avrebbe dovuto avere il credits official!!!
Solved.
The instrument in the beginning is a piano, most likely with distortion.
Alan said that he thought this is the best song that Martin ever wrote!
"Depeche Mode - Walking In My Shoes ft. BBC Concert Orchestra (Radio 2 Piano Room)" is a stunning and unique version from 2023. Maybe you can react to it in the future. :)
The guitar sound (as a violin) is played with an e-bow
If you think Dave's voice sounds better just wait until the next track on this album....Condemnation. That's his best vocals EVER! I believe he himself thinks so too....
He did that vocal in one take. They felt there was no way he could do better. And he says is the best he's ever done.
This album is full of surprises... Next one is the 3rd song, which comes very soon, I hope 😀
This is the single version btw, in my opinion the album version’s better
That sound in the beginning is a harpsichord with effects on it (effects that would usually be used on a guitar) layered over piano- it was inspired by the sound of a cassette they played in the studio.
The drums during the verses are sampled from a rap song, layered with Alan playing a hihat and him playing a snare on separate tracks (and probably a kick drum too)
Also that solo is played on guitar, using an eBow and slide to get that unique sound. It’s layered with that same line played without an eBow and with heavier distortion, but it’s difficult to hear since they’re layered so well- or it could just be the same recording with different effects.
Watch the official videos from this album if possible. Goes well with the songs.
Very dark lyrics across this album. Im glad you are taking these tracks ine by one from thr album like we did in 1993.
Listen to the devotional live version. You will shed a tear.
Next one is Dave favorite song
Listen to the album versions!
I played this song on loop while fighting Ender Dragon in Minecraft with a friend
You've listened to the single version, the album version is 20 seconds longer and goes a little deeper. I just hope that you listen to the album version of "In Your Room" first and not the Zyphermix 7 inch. single version.☝

This is quality!!!!! Wait for Ultra!!!
Hey Seph, I want your background for my TEAM Meetings. Where did you find it???
I made it. But its pretty simple really, search for "Room with sofa" in google and it should bring up thousands of similar images haha
I know Dave was known to around this time be taking lots of steroids for his vocal cords on the tours..i i wonder if at this time he was on them heavily for this album, to also help compensate for his heavy drug use and what it may be doing to his voice. Ive listened to this twice since i made this video and each time ive heard something new in it. Layered is the right word here!
People write in the comments not to listen to the single versions, don't listen to them:)
I'm actually very confused in a way. A lot of people say one thing and the others say another haha
My life is one long excess, but i was a f**g rock star, you try it, I dare you
At some point you need to learn about the lives of Dave Gahan and the others.
