    I missed you Seph!!! This was a banger indeed! After Dave and Martin got sober, their stage chemistry improved and they are indeed having fun and enjoying their interaction. The “break down” is relatively new at this point, and I remember the audience going bananas for it. It’s always amazing to see thousands of people all singing. Great memory!

    Great to see you again Seph, was really missing you and your DM reactions! Enjoy the silence live is always a dance party. I love that you mention their genuineness... You should check out more of their interviews and their rock and roll Hall of Fame induction to get a feeling for their personalities... All of them have a great sense of humor.

    The transition from Freelove to ETS is the best part of this. Simply beautiful. They really nailed this part of the setlist.

    An Enjoy the Silence Live easter egg: since the tour of Violator, every guitar solo of Martin is sligtly different

    You didn’t remember this version because Enjoy the Silence is really their special: every tour has its own version: in the late tours they will add some nice electronic parts. And also that’s because you heard version from Devotional and Exotic tours: they had Alan and Andy who played all the keyboards and they also didn’t have one more person who could play drums so they have some improvisations from Christian Eigner now.
    Speaking about Devotional: that version has more dancing vibes, this version has rude guitar and drums and still has dancing spirit (especially when they performed it in Frankfurt, when you can hear additional drums and sounds even better)
    Comparing, I choose the Exciter one as my favourite, Christian adds more energy to some songs like I Feel You, Walking In My Shoes or this one (he will show it in the next tour and Memento Mori concerts)!

    If you've watched another live of this song (I think so.... don't mind my brain at the mo') you're likely vaguely recalling other times they've done a breakdown at this point; they normally do at this point in the song.... but how and what changes. This is the first time I've heard *this* version of it!
    Glad to see you back and in a bouncy mood!
    And I agree.... while I respect when a performance is a more intricate piece of work one has to focus hard on that, in a lot of bands in general anymore lives tend to be rather robotic/don't seem as though the band is truly interacting or having the occasional fun moment with each other. They just get out, do, get off.
    Saw The Cure recently, for the 4th time, and it was the longest - in their 60s after decades of work starting in 1979 - concert I've been to in years and they, too, showed a spirit of interaction and engagement that I don't see much anymore. With each other and with the audience. I especially enjoy Robert joking about how he'd screwed up during a song and advising other musicians in the audience how to hide it when it happens lol. There's some YT footage where in addition to group exchanges he also approaches offstage and the angle of the person recording catches that he's gone over to pay attention to his wife who is watching in the wings.
    I know and can appreciate the angle, too, of course, that a lot of musicians genuinely don't enjoy performing live. Like Martin and sooooooooooo many others there is anxiety, stage fright or just general lack of genuine interest. Some love to make music but standing in front of a crowd is "do it because of the job no matter how much you hate it or are in utter panic and trying to hide it".... but there are too many today that, well, it seems it's the norm to just not really be involved outside of getting it done and it's not stage fright or other such quality where it's not their thing but rather they just don't care, are just knocking it out, aren't having fun with band mates, etc.
    Some of that is label issues.... so many bands *aren't* bands in the sense of "folks who came together and chose to make music" but have over the years become so very more often/standard to be "label assigned this person other band members/these people to act like a band" so they don't have true personal ties. For more interpersonal connections small label or independent artists/bands nowadays need to be viewed if it's not an older group. (This, obviously, isn't universal but a sadly accurate generalization.)

    I personally HATE the drum solo garbage they do now with the song, I feel it takes away the impact from the song and comes across as rock n roll freestyle jam nonsense.

  • @FredrikAndersson597
    @FredrikAndersson597 18 дней назад +3

    I don't like this. This good song is slauthered here, especially during the mixed version towards the end through hysterical over-drumming and a glam rock influenced sound. This drummer, Christian, is certainly a technically good drummer, but with his over-drumming, he seems to have misunderstood what kind of band Depeche Mode is. It's not a glam rock or rock n' roll band, it's a band with music based on an electronic sound and atmosphere. Even Alan, who wasn't a drummer, did far better in the songs he sat on drums during the devotional tour.
    But I can think that Dave in particular likes this and the rock n' roll influenced mix. Since he moved to the US, he has always dreamed of participating in a rock n' roll band and has been an advocate and pusher to take Depeche in that direction.

    In addition, Dave's voice already here, in the early 2000s, begins to find it difficult to hold up a song like this.

    • @balovett
      @balovett 18 дней назад +1

      Agreed! There's good reason why Dave throws it to the audience to sing two of the choruses here. I'm not particularly interested in seeing Depeche Mode imitate a jam band, live. Their recorded material doesn't have even a whiff of that, so why would they expect the fans to be turned on by that sort of arrangement here?
