Cool vid(albeit the PS1 versions are very much not ideal).
On the subject of the III vid we were discussing, the think the issue is that Open World and Sandbox are both gigantic genres that are extremely big tent and can be paired with a ton of other genres. So it's really impossible for any one game to be the true Wolfenstein tier 'break out' of the genre because it's not got some gameplay style or root. Bethesda's Elder Scrolls was massively influential for huge branches of the Open World genre. So was Mario 64. So was Simcity. And more recently Minecraft really pushed the 'open' part of the word. It's like asking which game founded the 'Action' or 'Adventure Genre'.
Also calling Grand Theft Auto as a franchise 'sandbox' is extremely controversial, as there's a huge disconnect between the level of freedom in the missions and the level of freedom in free-roam in almost every game in the series. 3 onward has distinctly different rules between the two game modes, and even GTA 1 still has a linear mission structure if you follow it. 2 is the only game where your actions in the overworld outside of missions directly effects the missions, mostly just the respect mechanic though. It's not 'not' a Sandbox, but you don't have the same degree of freedom you do with something like Minecraft or Powder Toy or other 'Full' Sandbox games, and it's very much segregated to the 'not missions' stuff.
I think(based on what I remember you using in your picture for an example of stuff GTA inspired) the word that people would use more clearly to describe what you were trying to say is the "Open World Crime Sim Subgenre" or something to that effect(Or Open World Crime Games, or Open World Crime Sandbox, I've seen a few terms). That's the one that used to be called GTAClones and yeah for that specifically, GTA III was absolutely the big mainstream break that popularized the genre. The only prior games considered to be in it were the first 2 GTAs and the first 2 Drivers, maybe Body Harvest? None of those hit it huge like III so in that more specific context I'd agree 100% with your statements. This subgenre includes(alongside GTA and Driver), Mafia, The Getaway, Simpsons Hit and Run, , Reservoir Dogs The Game, Godfather the Game, Scarface The World is Yours, Watch_Dogs, The Crew, Retro City Rampage, Hotline Miami, and most famously Saints Row.
If you mean THIS subgenre, I 100% agree with every point in your original, GTA III took the niche genre previously dominated by Driver and made it mainstream, prompting a huge wave of other games in Gen 6 and Gen 7(Simpsons Hit and Run and ScarFace The World is Yours are great). It combined elements from racing games and shooter games along with open worlds based mostly on real life cities(very very different from dominant open world games of the day which were either fantasy based or procedural generated) and made something new. It also has sandbox elements in the free-roam mode, though I'd hedge off calling it a full blown sandbox series. GTA San Andreas and maybe GTA 2 probably qualifies the best of the whole series, most stuff to do in free roam and the most overlap between that and the missions. 3 has very little to do outside of missions and by the time you get to stuff like 5 the missions are way too linear to call sandbox.

I recently found your channel off of your treyarch retrospective and I binged watched all your videos. I can't wait for the continuation of this series and the continuation of the cod series. This is kinda random but I really like when you use your face with the spiky helmet in your videos a lot. I think I'm either your 699 or 700 subscriber and I can't wait for more videos

GTA London was based on the Mods & Rockers era, films like Quadrophenia show what this era were like. When these 2 gangs clashed it was said to be quite spectacular & brutal. Football hooliganism was also also rife so London was a bit of a meltdown pot for trouble so I think that was the reason/inspiration for the London games.

That’s honestly really good information and a great find, I could see that being their reasoning for it existing!

@@AppreciationCulture I secretly wish they would return to GTA London but I doubt they would, especially if it was more modern. With the gang culture over here it would cause the world of controversy.
Hey man, mad respects for the work you but into your videos. I love a bit of long form content & I came across your channel today. Just watched your Black Ops video followed by this. Great work 👏🏾👊🏾

If Rockstar makes a game, I know I’ll play it multiple times. They make the only games I’ve owned on multiple consoles.

What?!! 25 likes including my own like... shit mad underrated. But it is probablly because there is sooo much videos like this one about the GTA series and about Rockstar in general that this video will just get lost between them.

I appreciate these comments! I know some videos will do better than others but I really want a diverse (tons of variety) channel and not just to be a COD channel (due to the one very popular vid). So hoping these will eventually gain views but you remind me that my editing/writing efforts are solid and that there’s people who really like these non-cod vids as well. Thank you for your support!

Maybe just me, but the og GTA's graphics look dated even for 1997, it looks more like something from 1993
