  • Jan & Dean 1960s Albums Ranking: • RANKING Jan & Dean's 1...
Feeling lucky to present a RUclips first: ranking Jan & Dean's songs, following my ranking of their albums. As in the albums video, if one notices one of the following releases is missing, I made some calls based on the fact that not all of their releases were made under the usual circumstances - namely, sometimes neither Jan, Dean or both appeared vocally on some work with their name.
The Heart & Soul of Jan & Dean and Friends (1964), Filet of Soul - A "Live" One (1966), and Carnival of Sound (released 2010, recorded during the 1960s after Jan's car accident) feature only when they're studio recordings and both Jan & Dean appear vocally.
Jan & Dean's Pop Symphony No. 1 (1965) and Save For a Rainy Day (1966) don't appear because one's without vocals altogether, and the other is without Jan.
I hope nobody's put out too much by this, but I wanted to keep the comparison/criteria as fair and consistent as possible.

By the way, great list and a great spotlight on the music of Jan & Dean! On some selections you made I strongly agree, and on others I strongly disagree. But still a really fun retrospective of their music! 🎙🎷 surf 🏄‍♂️ 🌊

When you mentioned about the song Where were you when I needed you. You said it was a cover. But, Jan & Dean recorded it before The Grass Roots 👍

Like you, I also feel "Deadman's Curve" is the best Jan & Dean song.
My "sleeper" song (a song most people don't know) is "A Beginning From An End". The storyline "twist" during the spoken part will catch a first-time listener off guard.
My two songs that were "missed opportunities": She's My Summer Girl ...and... Someday (You'll Go Walking By). I feel these two songs were strong enough to have been singles, rather than "B" sides.
One of my favorite covers that Jan & Dean did was "Everybody Loves A Clown" from the Command Performance album.

Agree completely on "A Beginning From an End." The twist was inspired. Just made my top 20.

Just a comment about #8, the Little Old Lady From Pasedena. I agree it's a great song! However, as with several of Jan & Dean's recordings, the falsetto vocals on that one were actually provided by PF Sloan of the Fantastic Baggies. The Baggies provided background vocals on alot of their music. Dean actually stated in an interview that he did work on the song with Jan, but on the actual final record he was dubbed way down into the background somewhere, if he was even on the record at all. He's not the prominent falsetto voice on the song. Although when they did it live, Dean often would song (or lipsync to) the falsetto part. If you listen carefully to songs like "Linda" and Dead Man's Curve" and "New Girl In School" which did have Dean singing falsetto, you can most likely notice the difference in the sound of the falsetto. Sorry if I'm bustin' any bubbles. 🫧

I also cheated a bit, some of the early stuff first came out in '59.

I don't rule out fine-tuning my approach but whatever music is there I'll be talking over it anyhow. Also, ten secs per thought on each song and the vid's already pretty long so there wouldn't be much music anyway. Sorry this vid isn't what you thought it would be I guess lol.
