ROYAL MARRIES MAORI BUILDER
Lady Davina Windsor, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and 20th in line to the British throne, married a New Zealander at Kensington Palace on Saturday.
Lady Davina, 26, met Gary Lewis, a builder and surfing enthusiast, while on vacation in Bali, Indonesia, four years ago.
The 33-year-old is the first Maori to marry into the royal family. He has an 11-year-old son from a former relationship.
They married in the chapel of Kensington Palace - where Lady Davina grew up with her family in an 11-room apartment.
Princess Diana formerly occupied another apartment in the central London palace.
Only close friends and immediate family attended the wedding ceremony.
Among the guests was New Zealand author Witi Ihimaera, whose book The Whale Rider was adapted into the successful film of the same name.
Lewis is Ihimaera's nephew.
The bride's grandmother Princess Alice, who at 102 is the oldest member of the royal family, was absent due to physical frailty, but the couple visited her after their nuptials.
Lady Davina's father gave her away and her sister, Lady Rose Windsor, 24, was among the bridesmaids.
No other royals were present, although Princess Anne's former husband Mark Phillips attended.
About 40 members of Lewis' family were also there.
His son, Ari, read a Gaelic prayer, and Nick Harvey, a friend from New Zealand, was best man.
Lady Davina, whose father is Queen Elizabeth II's cousin, does not carry out any official royal duties.
She followed a course in media studies at the University of the West of England in Bristol.
Lewis comes from Gisborne on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island and is a former sheep shearer.
His father, Larry, was a champion shearer in New Zealand in the 1980s and his mother, Viki Carr, previously worked as a maid.
Announcing the wedding in March, a Kensington Palace spokeswoman said the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were "delighted" by their elder daughter's engagement.
The newlyweds are expected to settle in Britain.

I had the privilege of meeting the Duke of Gloucester in 1998. A lovely man who had the 'role' foisted on him when his elder brother died in a plane crash. The Duke wanted to be an Architect and had studied and gained his Degree, met his wife at University, married and settled down to a quiet anonymous life when BANG he had to give up his preferred career and take up the title of Duke of Gloucester instead. He must have been so glad his daughter wouldn't carry such restraints.
being a duke isn’t like having to rule it
I have so much respect for the Gloucester and Kent families they have supported the late Queen and Royal Family wonderfully throughout the year’s and show the way forward for the minor Royal’s 🇦🇺💗💗💗💗👏👏👏👏💕🇦🇺👏💗
This is the way forward for minor members of the royal family , modest and tasteful . The brides father is a royal Duke and the grandson of a King Emperor , I have always admired the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the late Princess Alice , a lot of public duties done with no nonsense and never the hint of scandal
How true Chris & may I offer - in a back-slapping ....sort of 'handshakes all-round sort of way.....he's a damnedly good looking young fellow......
Handsome groom. Sadly their marriage ended in divorce last year.
@@monalisasmile6629 , thanks, and it is sad to learn about it.
The late Princess Alice is a model for the Royal family to follow.
Please don't refer to the Gloucesters as "minor" royals. That's an oxymoronic term---one cannot be "minor" and "royal" at the same time. Plus, it sounds insulting. They are members of the extended royal family, so let's refer to them that way, please, and not as "minor". The Duke's father, was after all, just one position behind his brother, George VI, in inheriting the throne. Had George VI not had children, Henry, Duke of Gloucester would have acceded to the throne upon the death of King George, and we would now have had King Richard on the throne, since 1974, with his lovely wife, Queen Birgitte. Though the Gloucesters did not become king and queen, they have been hard-working royals, as have many of the late Queen's aunts, uncles, and cousins, including the Kents. Members of the extended royal family serve a very important function, and should not be referred to as "minor".
This was natural and not staged as royal weddings often are.....when the duke led his daughter in one could tell there was real affection there. I saw a photo taken in 1977 (again, not staged) when the Duke of Gloucester was riding home with his wife and newborn daughter (Lady Davina). He was bespectacled and looked the classic geek, but there was a glow about him as he looked at his daughter.....every newborn child should know such love from his or her father. It really struck me to see that, as royal family pictures are usually posed and often strained looking.
The Gloucesters, Princess Alexandra of Kent, the late Princess Alice have all always comported themselves with dignity ever mindful of duty and with demeanors revealing both modesty and simplicity, which is the essence of service.
Sadly Princess Alexandra's daughter Marina did not follow suit
@@sandymitchell258 Well, she is not a working royal, so it's more her loss.
The Kents have more European Royal blood in their veins that William and Harry have.

They are lovely and beautiful, I wish them all the best.💖🌹🌼🌺🌻⚘💐
He is v handsome. No wönder she fell for him.
Verry bautifu&humble bride, regular reception wedding in day light.
Beautiful. Never liked big weddings.
A beautiful couple.
The groom is soooooo handsome! No wonder she fell for him! The Duchess is so beautiful and elegant as always.
A handsome groom of Maori descent in the Royal family, so Meghan is not the first person of colour.
Queen Elizabeth is directly related to the prophet Mohammed. You can research that statement because its 100% true.
shut up muhammad was a rapist and child molester.. he had 8 year old girl as bride named aisha
Queen Charlotte was the first British royal of colour.

Good for her: she knows she’s got a guy she can count on, both as a man and as a builder!
He won't get his hands
dirty!
This took place in 2004!
Look below the caption. All the info on who's who, family connection, info on bride, etc. is all there. Bride is Lady Davina Windsor ( 20th in line) daughter of the Duke of Gloucester and the groom is a Maori Gary Lewis, a builder, former sheep shearer and surfing enthusiast from New,Zealand. He will be the first Maori to marry into the RF. He has a 11 yr old son from previous marriage. It's great to see more people of color marrying into the RF.
Very personal borring wedding
@@micjurulgd35 It was theirs. Perhaps it was enough for them and that's all that matters.
hummingnectarbird b
lovely couple.
That's the first royal wedding that I have seen without morning suit.
I believe you are wrong. At the time of this presentation, wedding, and then even the duke's birthday in 2019 he and his wife (not their children) were still working royals, who are among the most valued by the queen for their hard work and support of royal duties, causes. They have aged and are moving to smaller quarters, but I do not believe have retired from royal duties. They are at virtually every formal affair the queen hosts and often sub for her at events. These in addition to their own assignments on royal schedules, though not as busy as Anne.
They live in the Royal enclave at Kensington Palace
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester are Working Members of the British Royal Family. They have represented Queen Elizabeth for decades and are now continuing to support King Charles. They attend events and charities and are on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace at all major events. They are unassuming and do a great job. Their children are sometimes at royal events but very much in the background as they have no working role.
Would be nice to have a bit more information on who was who.
The bride is the Queen’s first cousin once removed, her father is a cousin of the Queen
Another beautiful Royal bride. I wish them many happy years together. ❤
They are divorced
The bride's father is the Duke of Gloucester who is the son of Henry Duke of Gloucester the brother of King Edward V11 ( the Duke of Windsor) and King George V1.
Meghan Markle is not the first "person of color" connection in the British royal family but is the first without an aristocratic background. Prince Philip's uncle George 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven (brother of Lord Mountbatten & great grandson of Queen Victoria) married Nadejda de Torby (Nada) in 1916. Nada Torby was the daughter of the Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich (Great great Grandson of Catherine the Great) and the Countess Sophie von Merenberg the grand daughter of the Russian poet Pushkin who's great grandfather was black. Nada Torby's sister Anastasia Torby is the great grandmother of the present Duke of Westminster the greatest landowner in Britain.
Good grief, I had no idea Ma'am, what a fascinating family.....
I have friends in Eriboll, Sutherland & fish there at least once a year...!!
Gary Lewis had no aristocratic background either. A carpenter, who ran a property renovation business and a keen surfer.
...Also she is related to Queen Charlotte, was biracial. .
Who cares about colour? Why does a person's genetic make-up have to matter?
Use Roman numerals instead of numbers. The Duke of Windsor was Edward VIII, not Edward vee eleven (you left out one digit, which would have been one hundred eleven, as he was the eighth, not the seventh). King George VI, not vee one. 😉
The bride looks just like her mother.
Yes, she does.
May I offer, she's a very pretty young lady, I'd have been incredibly proud to have walked the aisle with either filly....!!
Why did the Royals not attend the wedding?
Henna du plessis They were invited but unable to attend.
Same thought... Not even one of them attended
God bless
Did I hear someone say 'Native' or was it something else.
Think the bride and groom here are divorced now.
i love tyrone bowden
WHO IS SHE?
Daughter of HRH The Duke of Gloucester. He is the Queen's cousin. His Father & her Father were brothers. This wedding was years ago- 2004. They have 2 children!
Saskia Bruce ; Thanks for letting us know.
She’s a very minor member of the royal family. Hardly correct to even call her one. Where were some of the more major members? I would’ve thought Sophie and Edward would attend. Anyways, she seems to have found herself a very handsome husband.
She is the daughter of the Duke of Gloucester, who is first cousin to the Queen. That's reasonably royal!
Ann TwoShoes Then by that reasoning, Prince Charles and the Queen should be there but they aren’t. But maybe she kept this low-key for some reason.
Ann TwoShoes b
DlchMcV Having The Queen there changes everything. She was invited, but she was unable to attend. It was a very nice, very low key and relaxed wedding, just like anyone else's.
Lady Davina Windsor, Daughter of Prince Richard Duke of Gloucester. Great-granddaughter of King Emperor George V, great- niece of King Emperor George VI, second cousin to Queen Elizabeth II.
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester live at Kensington palace and undertake a full schedule of duties on behalf of the Queen and her government.
The couple wanted a small wedding, having senior royals attend would make that impossible.
He's definitely hot.
Who is she?
Teresia Wachira Daughter of The Queen's first cousin, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who like her is a grand child of King George V and Queen Mary.

And now after three years together the couple are apart Mother to two children all three living in London....Very low event...No senior members of Royal family
. Except HRH Duke & Duchess of
Gloucester. They did make a nice couple,
,
Wow. That's sad.
So quiet but much more feeling than all the komotion of Harrys.
I dont think so dear. This was a beautiful, but ordinary wedding in the chapel on the grounds of Kensington. At Harry and Meghan's wedding, the happiness, joy, and absolute warm emotions was coming across even over television screen. I dont know what your problem is; lack of taste, dislike of the Duchess, race or whatever it is, you need to lose it because you're coming across as a first-class dimwit. Btw, he's of mixed race, divorced before, with a son, and from very humble origins. But he looks to be a mature person who loves the bride and that's all thst matters.
Seeing as the service was private, this wedding was in 2004, how do you know that? She is also a minor Royal & is virtually unknown to the UK public. She does not carry out public engagements. Therefore why would it be a big wedding. Still I'm sure you already researched that before you commented!😂😂😂
Your racism of Future Queen Meghan is disgraceful
@@LE-zy2od Whilst I agree about the racism Meghan will not be Queen. Only if Charles, William, George, Charlotte & Louis die. If that happens & Harry becomes King she will only be Queen consort.
@@sazzieb1 yes Meghan is the Future Queen Consort. But like many before her she will be called Queen
Paparazzi footage.
That was the saddest wedding I've seen of a royal.😒
Cricket Bee78 why?
Yeah why?
Cricket Bee78 It was lovely, I was there. It was simple and gracious and not a state occasion. Beautiful service and reception. Weddings don't need to be over the top, with the bride wearing what looks like a cup cake. That is just vulgar making more of the accessories than the event itself.
@@mscott3918 Lucky you. Do you know Denny?
Saskia Bruce The Gloucester family is related to the Scott family by marriage. Princess Alice was a member of the Scott family.
They will own the company and probably distantly related 🤔. They don't marry plebs.
That was the most boring wedding and wedding party I've seen. Are you sure it wasn't a funeral?
I agree
Chamisal Shy-Nae What? A very short video just leaving the church is hardly indicative of anything. They just didnt put on a show.
Chamisal Shy-Nae Had you been there you would have seen that it was a very nice, unfussy wedding. A big vulgar display isn't necessary.
Um no thanks..totals think their better then everyone else...
M Scott Exactly. It looked like quite a happy family group and they simply were not interested in putting on some “show” for anyone else. Very classy.
It's sad when Royalty marries below their rank. We should go back to the strict standards of the past.
She is not royalty.
Jamie Rattigan ; Strict standards of the past is Royals marrying their cousins across Europe.
Jamie Rattigan Are you serious?? 😂😂😂😂
Dunsapie She is great grand daughter of King George V, second cousin of The Queen. That is pretty well royal.
Below their rank... my god, what do you think royals are? They are people like everybody... royalty should not exist anymore
