The songs from this album dealt with genuine heartbreak that Springsteen was going through. As I result I find the songs here particularly deep and meaningful. This one is my favorite.
I remember this song playing at the radio when I was child. At that time my dad was driving and I was watching the streets and the world running by my window. My soul bleeds if I things about all the dreams and hopes which never became true and I feel tired of living just to run through problems, illness, worries. But somehow this music helps me, and it remembers me the days when everything was easier and brighter, and my dad was there. If you are lucky to share your lives with a dear person or a family never ever forget to let them know how much you love them. How many emotions in a song

"God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of." How the HELL did he know what I was going through thirty years before I started going through it?
Me and Jennifer Joy sitting on the sidewalk of the quiet dead end street somewhere in New Jersey 1991...late summer, super quiet, the air was so still. Where is she now?
When I was just a dumb young kid, I thought this was the most boring video. I just watched it again for the first time in years. Isn't it amazing how putting some years onto a perspective can totally change it? Amazing video, gut wrenching performance by The Boss...I see it now!
Great post! I totally agree. In my teens I used to rip my sister's boyfriend for being into Bruce. Boring x10. 10 years later this was the sound track to the end of a 6 year relationship. Bruce's voice reeks of regret. I felt it x10.
Exactly. As a much younger person I thought a video should be more exciting than this. (Same with Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares to You, similar premise.). Now as a 50 year old, I watch this, and am blown away by the emotion in his singing as well as his face. Brilliant (no pun intended.)
I grew up in the 60’s. So in the 80’s was spoilt with original artists where songs had real meaning. Bruce Springsteen is amazing and the older I am the more I can appreciate him as a great singer/songwriter.
Him, Seger, Mellancamp and Knopfler all speak to me louder the older I get... they all write and sing about real life... none of this baby-baby-baby crap of the younger generation........true lyrics that speak to the soul.
Today I feel exactly like Bruce once sang this, a final breakup, the phase of one life spent with the wrong person is ending, and I thank God that I have the ability to recharge my depleted energy with Bruce in songs. He doesn't even know what magical and powerful fluid he has in him, he didn't just get the gift of musical talent, movement on stage, he's mysterious, he's a magnet, I have a high respect for him with an open heart....thank you for keeping me afloat and not drowning. ..
This video shows that someone with true talent doesn't need giant special effects, over the top glitz, and massive instrumentation to captivate an audience.
This video is incredible! Guy strumming a guitar and singing about love in his kitchen. By the end, the viewer doesn’t even realize he’s right inside the singer’s heart and mind! Brilliant.
In my opinion this has to be the greatest video of all time! Just a man and his guitar, and heart on his sleeve... His emotions and body language match how I feel inside when I listen to this song... Bruce has a way to pull you in with pure honesty... Outstanding lyricist.

I remember hearing this song for the first time as a kid and being like, Wow!! He’s really hurt. Also, can we give credit to the director of this video??🔥🔥🔥
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.

Never afraid to be human. Love his lyrics. Love his music. Love his interviews. Love him On Broadway. Love his butt 😆🫣🤷♀️ What can I say? I'm a big fan.
Too many song lyrics are about negative emotion to the point where it becomes cruel. REM's Fire is an example. Believe me I understand thinking about things that are waay more than every day thoughts - but to wallow - yes I wrote wallow - in obsession, addiction, aloneness is not going to get anyone anywhere but deeper into that negativity. Something has to offer hope. Laughter often does it. Innocent laughter with pets, birds and other critters. Turn the news and song lyrics OFF for freaking out loud!! IF the world ends during the time you take a break from that negaivity - it is what it is. Remember - the music industry exists to sell music. They don't care about your mental or emotional health any more than news media, social media and Big Tech do. NADA bit. Musicians, lyricists - can we change this please? Yes, I include myself and I do change lyrics - often radically - because I am a strange determined Independent creature. So there. 😊😎🤔 lolololol
I was saying how he sings with passion. Yep, from the heart. He’s a legendary artist. Along with Roy Orbison, Prince, Tina so many. That we live at time to hear these great songs is awesome.
Bruce is the epitome of greatness. True songwriting is all about giving the world something to think about in addition to entertainment. His songs remain forever ingrained in my psyche.
All of his songs from this era/chapter of his life have exponential meaning and depth. Truly an introspective time in the life of The Boss- searching for reasons, and an understanding of answers given to questions that he himself didn't realize he asked
One of the most genuine artists in the history of American rock period. This coming from one who isn't a great fan of his, but giving credit where credit is due.
I hear you, man! At a young age I felt Bruce to be pretentious - a working class hero, but somehow pretentious. Over the years, damn, those lyrics somehow started speaking to me...I realized he was a genius at writing from the heart.
@@warrenny I think for me, his lyrics were too mature being that I was ten when he wrote tunnel of love. I got mature, and I not only get it, but his music sounds better to me now.
The raw honesty of this song AND video - gets me every time - no matter how many times I watch/listen to it. The subtle eye contact; the direct eye contact; the avoidant eye contact - we've all been there in various stages of our lives. This might be the perfect song - we acknowledge our flaws, we know we were good, we know it might fall apart, but we have fears - fears of the unknown and what lies ahead. I could listen to this song - 10 times in one day and get something different out of it each time; other than the 1 constant - this song is timeless.
This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!

Ravinda Peiris Yes, he surely did. I think perhaps we humans had some understanding of that concept almost from the start of our living communally in caves, huddled together by fires and glancing sideways at each other, to see who'll take the largest piece of wild boar, who'll get the best spear for hunting the next day, who'll claim the finest female, etc. Suspicion might be inherent in humans - instinctual - to preserve for ourselves the better of the choices. Maybe?
reakingringpiece His poetry always sounded to me like he leaves it open for the listener to interpret it as they want. All his songs have separate meanings for everyone who hears them IMHO. Thanks.

I hold you in my arms
As the band plays
What are those words whispered baby
Just as you turn away
I saw you last night
Out on the edge of town
I wanna read your mind
To know just what I've got in this new thing I've found
So tell me what I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
I heard somebody call your name
From underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame
Underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby
But I just can't see
What a woman like you
Is doing with me
So tell me who I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Now look at me baby
Struggling to do everything right
And then it all falls apart
When out go the lights
I'm just a lonely pilgrim
I walk this world in wealth
I want to know if it's you I don't trust
'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself
Now you play the loving woman
I'll play the faithful man
But just don't look too close
Into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter
The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours
Well maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me
You better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Tonight our bed is cold
I'm lost in the darkness of our love
God have mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of

I remember this song playing at the radio when I was child. At that time my dad was driving and I was watching the streets and the world running by my window. My soul bleeds if I things about all the dreams and hopes which never became true and I feel tired of living just to run through problems, illness, worries. But somehow this music helps me, and it remembers me the days when everything was easier and brighter, and my dad was there. If you are lucky to share your lives with a dear person or a family never ever forget to let them know how much you love them. How many emotions in a song
En Rico I feel so proud of you to tell the world of yor deep heart felt feelings. My friend I wish we could meet other in person. Obviously you miss your dad but mate he is still with you just ask him and he will guide you. I sadly lost my parents some time ago but we still connect mate ya just have to listen and look
The Bruce is Gifted so much that He have to remain on Earth.
What do you admire most about Bruce

@@MarcosBryant-lj8zi His Talented Voice
This has to be his best, or certainly one of his best. It's definitely in the top 3.
It ranked #20 out of the 314 songs he released.
Mike L It's #1 to me.
kudakwashe chipunza To be honest I never heard it. I'll have to check it out. Actually, I was never a huge Springsteen fan. I liked some of his songs on a selective basis and admired him for his success but I can probably count on one hand the number of his songs that I truly like.
to me Thougher than the Rest in #1. with no doubt
MissVariabile I have to check that out. :-)
❤ Since I was a teen, I always enjoyed singing harmonies with Bruce. Since I discovered his Nebraska album, it's been Bruce, me and my guitar. 🎸
this is so a beautifully written song
so under rated.
hardly ever hear it on radio anymore
I remember the tunnel of Love, do you? That's how I know it's the real us
This is An 'amber baby eye
I think it is his most underrated song
This song does not get old. Had the pleasure of seeing him live back in the day. One of the very greats, no doubt!
😊
+just kjb The song is great though, even if the video is not creative. I can listen to it again and again.
JustKJB , funny. When this song first came out, I thought it was stupid. Now I love it!
He never fails to impress me. He just keeps going. The Boss is the best.
He’s as good as as the Beatles and everyone else that’s why he is the boss
Yep.😊
One the best videos ever made !
Man, I got the privilege of living through the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan and Springsteen. What a blessed life.
You and me both, 60's, 70's and early 80's was some epic music.
Amen.
Now what?
"I wanna know if it's you I don't trust, cause I damn sure don't trust myself?"
"God have mercy on a man, who doubts what he's sure of."
My favorite lines . So deep
My favorite lines . So deep
"God have mercy on a man who doubts what he's sure of" Amen
Cos I don’t dam trust myself ❤❤❤
“I’m just a lonely pilgrim, I walk this world in wealth” just one line but so descriptive. Brilliant lyrics
I want to know if it's you I don't trust cuz I damn sure don't trust myself...
And now we've got what? Drake?
@@CARVALHOALBORNOZ yeah he is one of the “best “ ones too. Doesn’t say anything good for the rest of todays music
Nebraska!!❤🇨🇭
I don't think this was just a performance for him. He wrote this because of life experience, and he wanted to share it with his fans. Well done.
He was mostly writing of his life experiences
God,he is handsome❤
❤❤❤oh yes.😊😊😊😊
Today I feel exactly like Bruce once sang this, a final breakup, the phase of one life spent with the wrong person is ending, and I thank God that I have the ability to recharge my depleted energy with Bruce in songs. He doesn't even know what magical and powerful fluid he has in him, he didn't just get the gift of musical talent, movement on stage, he's mysterious, he's a magnet, I have a high respect for him with an open heart....thank you for keeping me afloat and not drowning. ..
Absolutely agree. He saved me
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of......what a line...
THE BEST AT HIS BEST!
This song is pure genius
That’s why he’s the boss. Such a great song. “Maybe the gypsy lied”
This video shows that someone with true talent doesn't need giant special effects, over the top glitz, and massive instrumentation to captivate an audience.
I’ve always like The Boss, but something is clicking lately and I’m listening to him a lot.
Giovanni Adrian truly... THE BOSS..
to me, a real cruiser
When there is no distinction to be made between the artist and the art, that is true art, or true humanity, or just TRUE
You are right....
Just your opinion.
You just have to look at his face to feel all the emotions
And the moon
God, how I love this song.
me too. memories of another time, far away in the UK as a grad student. listening to this album was a touch of a home I missed....yet I miss my UK home too . sigh..
Me too !! Have to hear it often !! Cathartic anthem for me !!
ana nunes He's awesome!!
God,song I love this. Song
Me toooo always a Bruce Springsteen fan and his band still together
I remember hearing this song for the first time as a kid and being like, Wow!! He’s really hurt. Also, can we give credit to the director of this video??🔥🔥🔥
Many times, Springsteen is just telling a story, this is autobiographical, he lived this one.
That Lake Oswego Beauty Queen kicked his a**.
He cheated
A brilliant song from a brilliant artist there's no disguising that
I don't know who you are or what you are saying but I think you need professional help right now this a terrible meseage
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
He did the same thing on Streets of Philadelphia to great effect, singing into a hidden mic as he's walking through the streets of the city.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.
A genius
Fabulous Bruce Springsteen with love from Jacqueline Hunt xjxx
One of Bruce's biggest hits and I think his most underrated song reached number 5 on Billboard pop singles chart in 1987
Saw him on the Tunnel of Love tour in Sheffield, England.
I remember this like it was yesterday
Me too
I was there , still have ticket stub ! SUPERB CONCERT.
Me to ❤
“So tell me what I see, when I look in your eyes...is that you baby, or just a Brilliant Disguise?...” Great song...Love this song...💯❤️🙌🏼

I love him l hope i get to see him someday l am 50 years old getting older but l would die to see him xx
I really hope you somehow get to see him. I’ve seen him 15 times and will see him again in March 2023. If I had the money, I’d follow him around like a Deadhead.
Bruce Springsteen was going through a lot of pain when he was making this album. Losing his first wife
They were separating, he got with the female band member and married her, if you watch tougher than the rest song in concert on here you can tell what’s going on when they’re singing, I’ll just play it now
Left her.
His emotions are on full display here. What a man he is 💕
Magic from basically a chair, a table and a guitar. Incredible
Never afraid to be human. Love his lyrics. Love his music. Love his interviews. Love him On Broadway. Love his butt 😆🫣🤷♀️ What can I say? I'm a big fan.
Seriously, my mind is blown.
Oh those intense eyes full of emotion coupled with the masterpiece of a song.......really the boss.......
Well said
I like the song. I can’t help it though that I keep hearing Elvis’s Suspicious Minds when I listen to this song.
Living legend
He was singing from the heart. Great lyrics.
I was saying how he sings with passion. Yep, from the heart. He’s a legendary artist. Along with Roy Orbison, Prince, Tina so many. That we live at time to hear these great songs is awesome.
This album got me through a divorce. It is treasured
It helped me to after my divorce. Glad it helped you to.
This song -- hell, every song on "Tunnel Of Love" -- hits different after you've been married awhile.
So freaking good
😊😊
Bruce is the epitome of greatness. True songwriting is all about giving the world something to think about in addition to entertainment. His songs remain forever ingrained in my psyche.
A true poet.
Amen brother....
All of his songs from this era/chapter of his life have exponential meaning and depth. Truly an introspective time in the life of The Boss- searching for reasons, and an understanding of answers given to questions that he himself didn't realize he asked
Johnny Ev master story teller
fantastic :-)
One of the most genuine artists in the history of American rock period.
This coming from one who isn't a great fan of his, but giving credit where credit is due.
You don’t know shit if you think he is genuine
@@InstantKaarma Why?Because his opinions differ from yours?
@@InstantKaarma what an odd comment
This song is fucking poetry. The twists are incredible.
This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!
This is a masterpiece!!
I agree!
That's an understatement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agree !! Best of the Boss !! I have to hear it often !! Bright Blessings
who is this Bruce Springsteen guy?
And one of the few great American artist.
I went through a divorce about 4 years ago and this song just makes a ton of sense now!
For me this is Bruce's greatest song. Simply a masterpiece of storytelling.
Thats true
Agree.
ONE of LOL but yes deffo a masterpiece
100%
definitely makes the top 10
2025 and still relevant ❤❤❤ this was 2 of my relationships…. Same lonely pilgrim, I knew she was out, but if I go searching for her at midnight, the trust is gone and we’d have to break up.
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of.
Ian Mann Yes, yes I did. I felt you needed it. A little bit of Bruce and things are alright, and when you feel drained you know you found it. ♪ xo Pax et Unum
Catherine Rapicano beautiful lines catherine 'God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of.' xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx i wish more understood this song like you
Ravinda Peiris Yes, he surely did.
Thanks.
Catherine Rapicano i agree :) he was a beautiful song writer and singer
Every time I hear this ...reminds me of the one woman in this life I truly loved ..my ex wife...took me long time in life to realise what I had and foolishly wasted ...for you Mo.x
