I was 16, and had just dropped my first girlfriend off at home. To put it bluntly, I wanted her in a bad way. While driving home that summer night with the windows down, this song came on the radio. It was the first time a song read my soul. Now, I'm almost 50, and that girlfriend is my wife. This song takes me back to that night, with that same feeling every time I hear it.
Hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons cover of this ruclips.net/video/zenNOP-dWJg/видео.html

Yeah, right.
Sounds like private pleasure moment

Our fire will lives on.
Jin I’m so sorry. 😓
Forever remember her whenever you hear this song.
Its one off my fav as well .
My condolences. It is a very good song, and your wife had a great taste in music.
peace be with you
One thing I appreciated about Bruce's music was it was all about the working man and real problems, Not just the stereotypical love song
Wow, you said it. He is THE master of this. Normal people. I agree. His works are epic. Noone compares.
@@almohvn33 Love his music, but he is a prick.
Yea bc he was a working man he worked real hard didn't he
He’s such a fraud. Tax cheat and hangs with the elites who could give shits about the “working man” unless they’re buying his $2000 tickets.
Oh yeah ??? You always have horie rich women chasing after you ??? Like an common guy ..
My late fiance would sing this to me almost every day he passed on Aug 18th 2020. My sister and I went to the graveside last fall and I was telling him how much I missed him singing that song to me. Well we get to the gas station she and my 5 year old nephew go in the store and I turn the xm radio 6 channel 20 and it's Bruce Springsteen and the E street band station and this song came on and played from start to finish❤ I know you are there always my Bill xoxo

My favorite Bruce Springsteen song, by far, it seems like this song lasts only 30 seconds every time I hear it. It never gets old. Ever.
I wish he'd remake this song an make it longer
I totally agreed with you. I’m 44 and every time I hear it it takes me back to my childhood. Loved the song then and still do.

I felt your comment in my soul
This song is about wanting something you can't have. The song is short, and you want more of it, but can't have it, which is why you love it. The song is not too short, it's just right. If it was any longer, it would kill your desire. Sometimes, wanting something is better than having it. If we had it, we'd just fk it up anyway. You know you would. There are things in this world that are better off without us.
i copied and pasted this comment from another im on fire vid. its so true

On another I'm on Fire video, I saw a guy say this is a "feel good tune." WTF?!?! One of my all time favorites, but I can't listen without a glass of whiskey and a cigarette.

Love your explanation...like a situation I'm in now. Oh well keep on wanting...very sexy song!!!
This song is perfect. It's short length leaves you wishing the song was longer, for something you can't have. Just like the lyrics express.
Just listen to it twice. BWAHAHAHA!

Like it was yesterday…, I had just left Army boot camp heading for duty in Germany when this album came out. Never more proud to be an American than hearing this song playing outside Frankfurt airport in summer 1984. I’m still on fire!
What did you do in Germany other than booze and beautiful German chicks? It's a criminal empire the US. You should be ashamed.
I was about 3 weeks away from finishing the 9th grade when this was released. My mom and stepdad were WAY bigger Springsteen fans than myself. I did however like several off Born in the 🇺🇸.
And he still wants me
I think she knows
Oh
Suprised Bruce never tried his hand at acting ..he has incredible charisma
Stillverycool!
i watched this and was just thinking how genuine he was talking to the woman, not just dry delivery, but speaking under his breath saying goodbye, knowing its just pointless anyway, kinda stumbling through a word here and there, like real, a real reaction.
Bruce has been a lifelong sufferer from depression. He spends long recovery periods between albums. He retreats from the world for his own sanity.
Of course he does, that's why they call him The Boss!!
His guitarist did.
Amazing how a song with so few words and a simple beat can hit so deep.
...and after all these years too.
When every word counts, every beat counts, and every note counts, that's what you get.
I'd be honored if some Springsteen fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performance DANCING IN THE DARK in tribute to Bruce's biggest world-wide hit. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.

That gruffness and raspiness was common in the 70s and 80s. Singers had to sing live in small venues for many years before they could make it big. and their voices got seasoned. Not the case anymore.
this has to be my favorite Springsteen song, very moving and the music video captures the ethos of the time perfectly.

I remember back to when those PMRC people were criticizing these lyrics. They were saying it was promoting stalking and violence, which was total BS. To me, the music is about loneliness and the walls we erect between us that perpetuates it. Also, the video could be about happiness. She lives a privileged life with lots of wealth, but are you happy? The song says it all. He was expressing how he felt, not suggesting any specific action. Absolute masterpiece of a song.

Hey little girl, is your daddy home?
Did he go and leave you all alone? Mhmm
I got a bad desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Tell me now, baby, is he good to you?
And can he do to you the things that I do? Oh no
I can take you higher
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby
Edgy and dull and cut a six inch valley
Through the middle of my skull
At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
And a freight train running through the middle of my head
Only you can cool my desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire

Lexi So true.
Wish it never ended
I was born in 1980 and this song gives me a nostalgic feeling of things that never actually happened.
I think this is my fav Bruce song. It is brilliant.
Bruce was a 35 year old man asking if a little girls dad was home because he has a bad desire.
This video had great production values for the era in which it was produced. It doesn't really look dated 30-plus years later. I wish music videos were still like this...
I was just thinking the same thing
Yes and no, in my opinion. ; ] The crappy warble when the song begins is just as if you're listening to this on a tape deck in a car back in the '80s. However, in all fairness, I'm sure that wasn't in the original release. VEVO left awful production blunders in other videos, too. Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" comes to mind, with a squelch at its 3:57 mark -- right in the middle of the song's arguably best part, which is, again arguably, one of the nicest guitar solos of the '80s.
The foley work here is shoddy, but I don't mean to nitpick. The white-clad wonder woman's voice has a different reverb characteristic because it wasn't recorded on the spot in the scene. The keys falling into Bruce's hand don't sound 'correct' either. Those two examples of substandard editing could surely have been remedied back then, but there are also many sound effects in more modern productions which I opine could have been done better.
What I see as timelessly great is the overall genuine artfulness of the production, which I believe is another way of saying what you've said. The decision to build tension with the riveting moment where viewers realize they aren't going to see the woman's face is a hallmark of artistry. Great video, as it captures the essence of the song.
There were lackluster videos back in the '80s, just as there are today. "I'm On Fire" stands apart because it has substance and character, hinting at a dark subject with an element of decorum, or at least basic decency, which 'art' and life seem to glaringly lack today.
There`s also the bouncy picture at the beginning. Looks like Telecine Wobble. Watched the same video somewhere else and it`s not happening there. So VEVO screwed something up during the transfer from the film reels. Or somebody else did and VEVO just uploaded it for promotional purposes.

There's a method to his madness
Over time this has become my favorite Springsteen song of all time
I love how the music video is about how class distinctions between two people can rob them of romance. Totally changes how I view the song when I listen to it.
It was when she said “We live way out in the hills”
She dug him. But he didn’t wanna meet the husband.
I respect Springsteen's lack of vanity. Most musicians try so hard to look so damn sexy, cool or god-like in all their videos. He's always a mechanic covered in grease or a lonely man in a pub. It makes him feel so human.
Because he's the BOSS.
a lot of those guys were scripted and did it for the fame in the 80´s but bruce does it for the music and a lot of them had big egos to bruce doesnt have that nothing wrong with a ego though ! just dont be a dick !
Nailed it perfectly. That's who he is, just another guy. Man in the street, one of the boys.
Tbh it makes him look sexier. Natural, manly, strong.
Worker class hero
I think that the feeling that some people feel when listening to this song comes from the fact that the song has some reminiscence of the nostalgia that hurts the most, the one of what could have been, but never was. And in this case it was "complicated" for something to happen, it was better to leave the key and go and think what could have happened. I think the song brings us something of the perfume of our own youth and what we could have done and everything that happened, that's why a knot forms in our stomach, because we realize the finitude of our own life.
The song has something of the sadness of Tango.
Alejandro, from Uruguay.

A lot of guys have been in this situation. Sometimes the taste of forbidden fruit can drive you crazy.......I know all too well laying awake at night when those shadows start whispering.....
right on. i was going to comment but you said it all right there bud.
+rang3r34 ladies as well
+rang3r34 ladies as well
Karla Kirkpatrick I guess this is a feeling that effects both genders.......
+rang3r34 There isn't one obstacle I've dealt with in my entire life that the Boss hasn't written about. Downbound Train, I'm Goin' Down, Glory Days, I'm On Fire, Two Faces, Brilliant Disguise, Lucky Town, Better Days, and so on...
If I wrote a book on my life, he'd have a legitimate case at suing me for plagiarism.
It’s amazing how he turned an old freight train riden down the tracks late at night blowing that horn in the distance into a song. It embodies all of that late night summer quiet back road essence and the passion of thinking of a woman.
Duster Springfield hat eine unverkennbare Stimme. Sie war so großartig. RIP Dusty in Love💋♥️
The whole feeling of the video and the song is exactly how I feel in the situation. Being so close yet so distant, the longing, the sleepless nights because they're the only thing on your mind
Yes, exactly
This song makes me start crying. It gives me this nostalgic, wistful, sad, aching feeling. Like a 6 inch knife in the middle of your chest and skull. It feels like you’re floating the moment it starts. There’s this aching feeling in your heart because you know everything you’re imagining will never happen. It’s about wanting something you can’t have, longing for something you just can’t reach. It captures yearning, desire, frustration, and deep sadness so well. I could listen to this song for hours. And Bruce Springsteen is so cute in this video.
Hello, how are you doing today? Thanks for your love and support.
Except that he could have had her if he wanted.
@@Jimmy911ism in which part tho? i dont think so!
@@riinaWETH She wanted him and if he’d opened the door and gone in, it was party time.
Best music forever and ever.
Concordo
This song & Bruces voice does things to me 😫
so, i grew up in the 80's, my childhood was 79-97. My music was was mainly Cure/Joy Division. I was thinking about this song today, and how i wouldnt dare tell my friends i like springstein. i figure 25-30 years later i can like it, playing through my head everyonce and a while for that long. I sit down with an acoustic guitar today, to finally play this, with in two tries i had it down, beautiful muted rhythm and vocals. right away, its a natural, cool song. wife loved it. if you play an instrument, play this for youre girl tonight, you have no idea how it pays off. if i did this decades ago, would have lost virginity that much sooner. cheers.
Same for me. Bauhaus, Cure, Joy Divison, Gang of Four, DNA, etc.. But I love this song. It's very romantic.
And I love him too. As a man and as a musician. Respect for Bruce Springsteen. One of the best .. Ever
+Brendan Garman AMEN BROTHER!!!!!!!
Ha ha , tell them Man , nothing to afraid of , music makes the world go round !!!
That's a long ass childhood lol. If you were born in 1979, then it's 82-91 or so... about age 3-12. Teenagers are kids but when I hear the word childhood, I think of believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny and stuff.
And it does seem like all genres of music from back then flow together more these days, it can ALL get lumped into just being called "80s music" now. I mean everyone who grew up then is in their 40s, so of course it's not gonna be as cliquey and genre specific as when the fans were 14. Plus people's tastes also can mature with age. There's 80s metalheads who now admit they like Madonna and stuff.
Man this song brings up such good memories from my youth, I'm 53 now and when I hear this song, I can pin point exactly when and where I was when this song came out and the girl I was with at the time. I'll never forget her nor this song, growing old sucks. But at least we have our memories, thanks to songs like this. Thanks Bruce, you're and always will be The Boss!
I grew up in Ocean County (New Jersey) and you rocked my world Mr. Springsteen. I saw you perform in Asbury Park when I was 17.
This song brings back memories till this day I still love her even after we broke up
Back in the 80's watching this video as a kid, I always wondered how Bruce Springsteen was going to get back home at the end of this video.
I know, me too. According to her, they live way up in the hills so Bruce is a long way from home. Either he will be doing a lot of walking and bus rides (if the buses are still running) or finding a pay phone and calling up a cab, but paying a grip in the process.
I still wonder. Does he take a bus? Call a taxi? How does he get home???
Vanessa Enlow
The stupid dumbass probably walked all the way home! Even if he didn't he's such an idiot for taking it to her house when she said not to! And does that help get him that women? NO! She just forgets about him! What a dumbass! She would have remembered him better if she had come back for it! No wonder so many men are stupid AFC's today. They are probably Springsteen fans!
lol once he gets to a highway he hitch hikes! But since he has so much desire the walking doesn't matter anyway :)
He called his private helicopter cause he's Bruce Springsteen...
I haven't seen this video in almost 30 years and I'm 40 lol. Bruce is not only a great looking man, but his voice, his demeanor, and pure sentiment in his work shows greatly in this video. An American legend!
1st heard this song 10 years ago.
I had it on my Playlist. Then me and the wife went thru a separation. I was drinking in my vehicle. My mom came to talk to me about my drinking and where I was headed in my life.
I told I can't explain in words, so i played this song. My mom started crying. Then I learned my dad played this song for my mom when they dated.
My dad passed 3 years prior.
;_;
Singer Bruce Springesteen is the best of all time, and it‘s still as if he startet singing yesterday, well done Bruce, don‘t stop, continue, they‘re all with you, you‘re great!
This song is still the most passionate song ever. Nothing compares. And the ending of the video is a revelation. That he is so full of longing he is happy to go and feel the night air on a long walk home. Also a steamy symbol of a common man yearning for something better and beautiful... a work of art this.
Underrated comment and your absolutely right. 😊👍
Who's listening in 2019 thumps up👍👍 and who's gonna listen in 2020?😁
u all have a great music style! ❤
ps: i did never expect so much reactions and like's u all are the best!!
i just listened to it then so thumbs up
KIP moore sings it even better

love it
She was 19 and out of my league, and she had a boyfriend. I knew her for 3 weeks thanks to our mutual friends. We never talked to much but we would always give each other silly looks...
There was a students' party of a kind...
I was 22 and pretty shy but managed to have a nice conversation with her that night. I didn't expect anything to happen... Later that night she asked me to escort her to her dorm not far away. We were in her room, and this was one of the songs she had on her mp3 CD.
We did not kiss or anything. She called me tomorrow to tell me she broke up with her boyfriend....
I was surprised and my ego was high as the sky, I did not expect that.
We were crazy for each other for five months and then she broke up when she had to return to her hometown.
19 years later, a year ago, I see her with her daughter (probably 6), I was with my son (9) and she gave me that same silly smile and we said not a word to each other.
I'm only just now discovering this song, 1/5/24. Can't get enough of it especially the way he sings the Ohh-ooh parts. This feeling of America when it was at it's finest decade, big dreams running wild, success in the air, simplicity, living and loving, the girl that got away... all of that rings heavy with the oohhs
Yep, that's Bruce!
Same! I just heard this song by John Mayer on his battle studies album. I didn’t know it was a cover
@@ANBskinstudio I'll have to listen to that
U2 with their 80s songs give that same exact vibe for me. Free and hopeful America and long, beautiful stretches of road in between towns that we could drive forever on, feel the open air and listen to the hum of the tires...
One of the most haunting songs and best music videos ever. ❤️
Agreed. Is this your favorite song?
I'm on Fire Duo by Johnny Cash Bruce ruclips.net/video/KMV_Low49AQ/видео.html
hello, how are you doing it is nice meeting you here.
Certainly an incredible song, not sure this would even rank in the top 10,000 music video of all time though. It’s basically just a dude driving around.
Wow, are you related to Hall & Oates?
I listen to this on loop when I'm resting my head on the shoulders of sheer loneliness and slumping under a myriad of memories. Bruce has a way with time. He never gets old with his art of living through the old.
This song reminds me of a very guy. Ive loved him since i was a small girl. He is the oblymanthat has ever touched me to my very soul. I love u always and forever my beau...my sweet handsome wayne!
I don't know why, but whenever I hear this song, I begin to sob. Then I feel content. And I begin to remember many things in my life...
Who’s listening to this gem in 2021 nothing like real music❤️🙏
Me ... all the time .. whys the song so short 💙🤘 ... born in 1984 btw . This is the best song ever!!
Me! Otherwise i cant survive!
Absolutely
@@brentkiley519 You lucky bastard! 36 is a great age!! I'm 45.
yep quality gear right there!
2 minutes of pure musical beauty...this song should be 5 minutes longer,i love it
It wouldn't be as great if it were any longer.
See, that's the absolute artistic perfection of it -- it leaves us yearning for more, just like...
Well, you know.
@@smartalek180 i agree..... it s pure magic..that would be like a country song, but it has a night vibe, exactly like the scenes where bruce drives the car....this is perfection, you re right
This tune never gets old‼️‼️‼️
I'm 12 and I love this song
❤
Loved listening to this song with my dad in his HVAC service van for years and when my parents were divorced I used to sleep on an old army cot with a flannel shirt for a pillow, I miss my dad. Passed in 2011🥺
very sorry for your loss and pray you are well
He love's you too.
My condolences brother I love you

I'm a HVAC service tech and I wear flannel , my dad was my best friend , he passed in 2012 ...hes probably hanging out with your dad !
My dad passed away last November and he loved this song so everytime I listen to it, it makes me think of him
God bless my friend and al the best wishes from the Netherlands to you.

So sorry for your loss JJ. Beautiful song to remember him by x
Prayers And Blessings. Amen
Me too! Lost my dad 2 yrs ago, this song and Bobby Jean bring the best memories back for me. Perfect song!
This came out the year I was born. I've always loved this song. I don't know why I'm just now seeing the video but the video makes it that much more magical and addicting!
This song could be about the woman or the car. Either way, this is the shortest song ever to tell a long story. So much is packed into this and emotions it stirs makes you want someone to feel this way about.
Crazy how his “whoohooo” at the end represents the trains whistle that was “running through my head” while the beat of the song is the train running on tracks
thats it man. fuckin hell. thats something .
Wow, thank you for pointing that out. I never noticed before. But you are right. Makes it even more perfect. X
Absolutely, that’s what I’ve always loved about this song.
I never realized that!
Thank you I had never noticed but you are right, the beat is an old steam loco beating away
