    just some note for opening up this 2.5 HDD, the 3TB version and up are double drive, it's about 2X thicker than the normal 2.5 HDD Slot. So it's best to get the 2TB version if you're replacing it with the HDD on your laptop.

    • @vasiliynkudryavtsev
      @vasiliynkudryavtsev 4 года назад +4

      Well, you are right about that. More than 2TB drives are 15mm thick, so they really don't fit into modern notebook/ultrabook.
      I checked the thickness of the cd-rom hdd caddy -- it is ~10mm thick (for 9.5mm hdd), so definitely 15mm would not fit.
      My another 10 years old notebook has a caddy of 3mm thicker(12.5mm HDD), thus It won't fit it as well.
      These 15mm HDDs are meant for portables and NAS, not for ultrabooks.
      In my gaming laptop the HDD is fixed with the iron bracket, I wonder if I remove the bracket, would it possible to fit in the 15mm.... I should try measure that with my caliper.

    A Seagate HDD doesen't always break first. Sometimes it's only the HDD controller inside box or PSU. Same for 3.5" versions.
    This is why you can just take HDD out and try it on any other HDD controller to be sure.
    Edit: In my case right now, HDD Controller broke in this casing in the video. HDD works fine on a different controller.

    Some say the hard disks used in external drives aren't suitable for laptop/desktop use. They say these drives are designed for sequential reading/writing, and not for the fast random reading/writing required in computers. Additionally, since people tend to use external drives only for short periods of time, these drives are designed for such light use. When used in a computer, they are made to run for hours at a time,, and they quickly wear out.

    • @DoYouEvenTech
      @DoYouEvenTech  Год назад +2

      This can be true for some, however with most Seagate drives they are standard Barracuda or Exos (depending on the capacity) placed in a case.

    Be careful of these drives. They are much thicker than laptop drives and may not fit in your device, also in some of the newer drives, the SATA interface is not available, you only have USB, and you won't know until you crack it open.

    • @pyracurse
      @pyracurse 2 года назад +5

      If you stick to the 1TB and 2TB drives, you won't have a problem with the thickness of the drive; it's only the 4TB and 5TB drives which are double thickness. Also, avoid Western Digital and Toshiba if you want an internal drive with a SATA interface - they have the USB connector soldered directly onto the PCB of the drive.

    • @DoYouEvenTech

      I suppose you could reuse the enclosure as long as you were careful disassembling it. Do you drive I took out is a 2.5" SATA HDD that I believe is 15 mm thick so as long as what you were purchasing was no larger than that I would think it would probably work..... That being said I would most likely opt just to buy a HDD enclosure off of Amazon as there are some really nice features that can be included in some of them and they are just made to do exactly what you're talking about

If you have another USB cable that will fit it swap out the cables and at the least try a different USB port on your computer. If it is still not doing anything no lights, no drive spinning sounds or vibrations it is possible you have a little bigger issue. Other things you can try:
      - a different Windows PC
      - try and see if a Mac OS or Linux OS will see it

      As long as it is don't carefully it should not be lost. But static electricity CAN damage them and they are much less protected from the environment out of the case. • @DoYouEvenTech
      @DoYouEvenTech  2 года назад

      Without hearing it myself it would be difficult to say what it most likely is. One thing I would do is rather than shaking, gently rolling it over in the palm of your hand. By rolling rather than shaking if the sound is still heard it could just be a small piece of plastic inside the case, most components in the drive that fail do take a little more force to hear and are normally much quieter.

      If your drive is the same type as the one I had in the video, short answer is yes. You just have to be careful with the drives they are very sensitive to static shock and vibrations. But if preformed correctly you would have no problem buying a usb-c drive enclosure, removing the damaged USB to sata adapter on the drive like I showed in the video and use it without having to do anything special at all in the new case.

      The PS4 should have the same 2.5" form factor HDD but you have to pay attention to the thickness of it. I am not sure if you can put the larger 3, 4, or 5tb drives in it. They can be all the way up to 15mm thick where the more common thickness is 7mm.

    Do these drives work on pc without any mods after this?

    • @DoYouEvenTech
      @DoYouEvenTech  4 года назад +2

      Yes after this, it is a standard internal 2.5" sata hard drive (aka. laptop hard drive). The only thing you might run into is the higher the storage capacity the thicker the drive can be, up to 15mm I think, but this can keep it from fitting some applications. Sometimes it may need to be formatted to be used but not mods at all.

    • @501Bravo
      @501Bravo 3 года назад

      One thing to consider is any external drive that has the ability to encrypt...
      These drives will have a VCD partition you CAN NOT delete.
      This is a UDF type partition that is embedded in the firmware.
      You can use some partition editing tools (Ranish) to hide them - but they WILL NOT go away! The drive is still usable, but I would consider this to be a required "mod".
      It will also impact your partition count for for an OS that requires multiple partitions on the boot drive (Linux).
      If you read the fine print on the box, it will state whether the drive encrypts data or not.

      Sounds like a power problem. When the drive tries to spin up and can't they make a click/beep sound. You could try putting it in another enclosure but the way it sounds it very well could be a problem with the drive itself. if you get it to start you better get your stuff off of it.

    • @DoYouEvenTech
      @DoYouEvenTech  3 года назад +1

      You hit the nail on the head with the price difference in the external versus internal. In the case of the drive that I took apart it was a 4 TB that I bought for around $75. if I were to have thought an internal 2.5 in Seagate barracuda 4 TB it would have cost me $140. Because it's the same drive inside and I wanted an internal it made sense to save the extra money and just remove it from its casing. The other interesting added benefit for someone that does not already have a drive reader the USB 3 to SATA adapter board can be a very useful tool.
      The difference in 3.5 and 2.5 drives are there normal applications 3.5 being a desktop drive primarily and 2.5 being a laptop drive primarily you can get either size internal or external very easily.
