Hi and love from India 😊
I would recommend scool. That show has good vibes and literally the judges help teach the contestants.
You should check out UNIVERSE LEAGUE! It's a brand-new show, currently on its second episode, and trust me, it’s super exciting and not boring at all. The show is like a soccer-themed survival program, but instead of typical drama among trainees, the real competition is between the directors😂They’re the ones beefing with each other, which adds a hilarious twist to the whole concept.(i even witness a hybe vs sm in there just to get a certain trainee😭)
There are three teams competing against each other, and the ultimate winner will form the debut lineup for a new K-pop group. What’s cool is that there’s a twist: trainees can be "stolen" by rival teams to create stronger lineups. (This hasn’t aired yet, but the team that is coming out in the internet is different trainee of that group so it's certain ) There are only 42 trainees, and they’re all incredibly talented, which makes it harder for us to choose our main 😭
The first episode was already intense! The directors had to pick trainees from group performances, but if more than one director chose the same trainee, the trainee got to decide which team they wanted to join. It’s like soccer coaches scouting players, but with a K-pop twist. And the directors’ rivalry? Absolutely entertaining to watch!(still can't get over the hybe vs sm 😂)
I know my explanation might sound a little messy, but seriously, it’s such an interesting and unique show-you won’t get bored. Give it a try, and let me know what you think!

Scool is so far seems to be the only Kpop Survival Shows that is very much Fair and Unbias let alone the Judges are very fair when it comes to their criticism and eliminations so I recommend you to watch it
Imagine being a foreign contestant, interrupting the show and speaking up about mistreatment of others, KNOWING it could hurt the judges' impression of you (and in turn, your career). And getting shunned for it! Sun Ying Hao is a brave person. I wish they had responded to him properly.
Ying hao, the man you are✨✨✨
I hope he debut in a really nice group and become the leader.
Thank gosh the audience agreed with what he said and he got a lot of support because he stood up for the other trainees
This matter makes me lose all my respect for Lee Seung Gi. Yes, idols can perform more than 30 songs in one concert, but they still manage to catch a breath in-between & don't do it nonstop. Not to mention that not all the songs are dance songs. So, his point is invalid. He sounds more like a senior bullying his juniors because his senior mistreated him in the past.
@@zazaispratami3591And he’s not even an idol himself 😭 He’s a singer. I couldn’t even get to that point of the show and can’t bring myself to watch it at all. I’m just voting online for people I liked since auditions
yes i agree yinghao is very good he is my fav and that sill guider talking about concerts who knows nothing
but after that episode it isn't even that bad and the guider don't have full power over his debut
The audacity of Lee Seunggi saying idols "have to perform 30 songs in concerts" while him being mostly a ballad singer who just sit or stand around in his concert. Looks like the despicable behaviours of his in-laws have rubbed off on him. You're not inspiring anyone with your Ted Talk mister!
wow I didn’t even think of it that way…
it was already such a strange statement but with this in mind what he said is somehow so much worse. yuck
I was so disappointed when he said that. I thought he was a normal person, turns out that he is a very sadistic, cruel person. So disappointing
When Lee Seung Gi broke up with Yuna (my girl) I was sad. But now I relieved, Yuna need a real man ( Jun Ho, wink-wink).Lee is cry about the misstreatment of his previous management but here he is a bystander. No cool dude.
Exactly like go back to acting and shut up like damn
i didn't even know he made MUSIC TT. I thought he was an actor only so I was wondering why he was on the show
To the judge's point of 'oh well, idols have to perform up to 30 songs in a concert so you should be able to as well'. Okay, but rookies idol groups don't perform in concerts right off the bat, and they work their stamina up to the point where they can. So gonna call bullshit on that one.
Exactly! Also, concerts will often have ment sections where they take a break for a few minutes and sometimes solo stages so everyone is getting breaks for that too.
even if they had a debut concert, no rookie debuts with a 30 song album so he's still wrong 😭😅
Even in kpop concerts i went there and kpop idols don't dance non-stop there are vcr, ballad songs that idols sings only and not dance, moments they go backstage to change their outfits etc. So Lee seung gi said bullshit, is wrong
Also Kpop idols don't dance to every single song at their concert they have songs where they just stand and sing so they can have a break from dancing
Agree! And there are ballad songs that idols can sit or stand to sing and don't have to dance. With groups, they can have solo/mini groups stages so other members can change their outfits and recover their stamina. Idols will have small talk to fans between songs in other to connect to fans, make the crowd more hype to the next song and the most important is to catch a breath and take a little rest too
the fact that sun yinghao spoke up for the sake of his teammates even when he had already gotten picked early on impressed me so much. i want that man to debut
I don't normally stan men, but he MUST debut at this point.
Yes stand him right now. He isn’t afraid of speak up. It shows he has personality. Plus he is talent
they talked like SYH doesn't know how concert goes, concert has intermissions, also SYH did concert tours with IXFORM before they disbanded. IQYI hate these boys, they wont stop ruining their career.
Yes! And he would be a great leader!!
Ive been voting for him everyday, he's in third place currently!! Hoping he debuts
That nonstop dance challenge is so dystopian. It makes me feel sick to my stomach
Same. I can’t believe they thought that was something people would enjoy watching. It’s just cruel and evil.
Idols can dance for hours in concert cause viewers enjoy with them too.... How can anyone dance in front of dead audition.
The purpose of dancing with songs are enjoyment , which is totally dead by these judges
@@bratatidey1170 And let's not forget that idols do have breaks between songs, whether it's the short break at the end of a song to wait for the audience to finish their applause (the ending fairy, where you can see them catching their breath,) a moment to speak to the audience, or solo performances mixed in with group performances.
Not to mention that these are trainees, not seasoned idols who've been performing for years (as it usually takes a while before idols and idol groups have built a successful enough career to be able to have full concerts)
"Idols dance for hours in concerts" is a horrible reason to torment their young people to the point of needing medical care.
All three shows are bad, but Starlight Boys is honestly sinister. What made them think that physical abuse and suffering would entertain fans? I guess they took young adult dystopian novels too seriously...
Most of the songs that groups or idols perform on stage don’t even require choreography, oh and one more thing, IDOLS TAKE BREAKS FROM TIME TO TIME WHETHER THEY ARE ON TOUR OR PERFORMING ON STAGE! Not over exhaust themselves until they can’t breathe. Fans will STILL be grateful to see their idols on stage even during breaks as they obviously don’t want to see them die from exhaustion smh 🤦♂️
@@bhriannphilipLee Seungi is a hypocrite he literally sued his former company for mistreatment and here he is dumping his past experience to kids and young adults smh
Clearly the fans weren't entertained. And like the other dude said, real Idol groups don't start out with full-length concerts (not enough songs), they take breaks every few songs for MC stuff, _THEY HAVE WATER ONSTAGE,_ and of course not every song has full choreography.
And I’m sad about it I watch starlight boys and some of the trainees in there are really good 😭😭 and they have talent but they’re making them suffer.. and on the other hand the voting system is so messed up 😭😭 especially during that level test
@@hallooos7585 well I don't think it's Lee Seungi's words there. I bet they are the words he reads from a script.
Korea is confusing. No kdrama kiss ‘til episode 15…but they greenlight adult streamers with high schoolers?
Not high schoolers, PRIMARY SCHOOL KIDS (the youngest was 9 years old)
Something is off with that country. #1 Su**ide rate in the world for some reason.

Imagine a personal trainer making you squat 350lbs after barely starting your training, saying "Well bodybuilders squat that much, so you should be able to as well." Their bodies literally are not prepared for that, they haven't been trained! That judge from starlight boys is disgusting for expecting that and forcing them to continue.
They were literally called "trainees", they're not trained!! 😭
I am so angry at the judges from starlight boys I mean K-pop idols will have break in between the concert and K-pop concert is 4 hours or so but for 30 minute of the time they were not dancing.
It actually got better, the judge/guider you are talking abt is the only problem in the show.... iqiyi production did a wonderful job except for that one horrible thing
And it won't be a surprise! BTS know they're gonna perform 25 songs... It's harder when you're not prepared mentally at all because you thought you would perform once
ikr!!! like even ateez a seasoned group when performing coachella i.e 45 min stage had at the very least a 5 min break for their ment plus they werent dancing all the time they had rest parts in their songs and even then they were too tired so its not like its a requirement for kpop grps to perform for soo long without a break
I’m actually pissed cause I like some of the judges… What makes it even worse is that he said those things AFTER someone called them out for that mess, like, can’t you make a racional decision after seeing people cry and exhaust themselves in front of you??!
@@Ts27-i2d so how do you know it was Lee Seungi's personal decision to put them dancing for an hour and not the production company's order?

👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is just the kpop industry on general.
I respect that chinese trainee who stood up and told the judges to stop, knowing that it could ruin his reputation amongst the judges. That was so brave of him
Sun yinghao
Agreed!! I’ve taken 2 Korean classes (history and current events of the divided koreas, and Korean American pop culture) this past semester and it has really highlighted how xenophobic the general population is based on social norms (I’m not saying individuals are bad at all, this is a social issue that is clearly systemic - similarity to institutional racism in the US due to slavery.)
I’m not saying the US is any better, or that Koreans are bad people inherently or anything of the sort. I’m a devoted humanist that thinks that these issues do not reflect on individuals but rather reflect broken systems and prejudice due to historical conflicts and hardship.
These formal educational classes have really illuminated how Korea has a lot of healing and social growth to do. They have already excelled via economy and tech, in ways that are truly remarkable. Just a few decades ago most of the population was illiterate and starving to death. Now they are pioneers in tech and have the 12th largest economy in the world. They could definitely use some major progress now as far as social views and acceptance of (individual) differences.

Honestly shocking. Allowing such performances in front of minors, r*cism, forcing contestants to dance without a break, telling underage contestants to lose weight. It's nearly 2025 WHY are these people getting away with this? What the hell kind of dystopia are we living in? Thank you Ploopy for making this video and raising awareness. I feel like kpop fans are all so dedicated- I can only hope that one day everyone bands together and complains big time about such mistreatment then maybe we might actually see a change.
Korean survival shows are a joke nearly all of them are rigged
As we've seen many times over, it doesn't matter how much fans complain. As long as these companies keep getting money and support, these things will continue.
The thing with Syo DEFINETILY felt like xenophobia, just the fact that he got a lower score than his teammate it feels like they’re setting it up so they can kick him out as soon as possible
People aren’t talking about this enough!
@@dxhyunjinbecause they don't care
@@dxhyunjinthey really aren't
I think the company doesn't want him because of his looks so they sabotaged him from the beginning
Starlight boys was just pure horrific. I'm very dissapointed with the judges and 'mentors' esp w LSG. He doesn't even dance and had the AUDACITY to say anything abt being an idol. If it wasn't for his vocals or 'visuals' he wld be nothing
Or his talent too.
Regarding the judge who said that they should be able to do 30 songs, they are leaving out the OBVIOUS: 1. Not every single song is a high-energy dance song, and 2. the songs are not back-to-back-to-back. There's always downtime, such as ballads, ments and VCRs. Even SHINee, who broke ground for high-energy choreography while singing live vocals slow things down for a set after a set of fast songs.
I feel so bad for the actual former idols that were on Time Turner. The lineup had quite a few idols who were in nugu groups that disbanded. Sim Yerin was a member of Hi-L. Gwak Yujin was in eite and Lipbubble. Lea Navvab was a member of Viva. Dain was a member of Hot Issue. Khole Kim was in Majors.
Wow, I didn't know that Dain was in that show. That's sad, she deserves better.
starlight boys dance thing is genuinely horrifying
seeing those starlight boys tear up made me want to cry, nobody deserves that
It was so heartbreaking...
I mean look at KELLY yet people say PRETTY privilege is not real😭 she just make cringe faces like tiktoker rather than singing and dancing when it's what we should do to be a KPOP Idol 💀
I know that Kpop groups needs atleast one visual (Handsome\Pretty member) but those visual members usually have decent dancing or singing and have good stage presence and not bad at everything

15:05 yeah but in intervals! in a concert, idols will do 3 maybe 4 songs, then talk to the audience or play a VCR. really unrealistic.
for real! i was at music bank this year and the idols stopped to talk to fans every 3/4 songs. which means every 10/15 minutes they'll rest, take some water...
dancing for 1 hour is just risking the health of that poor trainees...
clicked, and immediately thought of time turner…im sorry but like you know its going to be bad when its airing on tiktok, not to mention no professionally trained judges as well..
It looked like a plain reherseal. As a person who never watch an idol survival show, I thought it was a behind the scene rehearsals until she said it was an exclusive TikTok livestream 😂
I aint ever been to a 30 song concert lol...Also, idols DO take Water and MC breaks, or take a slight stamina break by performing slower songs sooo thats complete BS of an excuse. Its just cruel.
What is worst is that Lee Seung Gi, has spoken about the abuse he suffered under his company for almost 20 years. He even has an act with his name.
PS:I thought ILAND would be here as well, I guess it's not the case.
PS2: I heard of Queen WA$ABII before but never heard her music.
ILand was actually crafted really well, it felt like an actual survival show.
What’s wrong is that they aren’t some actors, but real people.
At least with Iland2 they showed a better life for the girls, but it was so rough for the boys :(
i guess it's in 4th place, it definetly deserves to be in the top 5 of the worst survival shows 😭
I liked the idea of i-land, where the contestants basically choose who they think would make the best group. The final episode was a total gut punch when K didn’t make the final lineup. Fans thought that since his scores were always so high that they didn’t need to vote for him, so they voted like crazy for the trainees who were on the cusp of not making the lineup, and literally were selling and paying for votes. But having the “ground” literally be like prison was so wrong. Instead it should’ve been like a normal trainee apartment (which isn’t that great either but better than the nothingness in the ground). I get they wanted the trainees to be even more motivated by living in such a horrible environment, but it was too horrible and definitely crossed the line. Also how the food was greatly limited in the ground, while in the penthouse it was like a fantasy with every food, gifts, video games, large comfortable individual beds, only a few trainees in each room. The contrast was for “shock value” but they don’t consider how much that can mess with the mental health of the people who actually have to live there. In the end the lineup was pretty great and Ehna are killing it.
Wym 😢 the only thing the ground lacked was better architecture and cloth designs. There was food and there was clothes in ground as far as I know...
Don't tell me I've been too oblivious and they weren't even getting enough food?!
the only great thing about iland is the debut lineup. if there’s someone who’s interested in enhypen now and would like to know more about the members predebut story, no, they should never watch iland and instead support their post debut activities only
Sun Ying Hao is so amazing. I was blown away by them on Youth with You and didn’t know they were on starlight boys. I’m so glad they stood up for what was right.
I am sorry Lee Seunggi and judges, but fans do not enjoy watching torture, thank you...

I think that, so far, Chuang Asia Thailand has been the most "friendly" survival I've watched.
The mentors were highly recognized singers and actors, especially in Thailand and China, such as Jackson Wang, Ten, and Nene. The contestants came from different parts of Asia, which made it more interesting since the idea was to form a debut group with diverse backgrounds.
In the first episodes, the girls were able to showcase their individual talents, which I found interesting. This is something that might be considered unacceptable in Korean survival shows-for instance, the way the mentors and trainees interacted. There was no harsh or humiliating feedback, no censored songs, and both sides even made jokes and laughed together. Some contestants focused solely on singing, others only on dancing, and the mentors gave constructive advice without being overly critical.
Additionally, it didn’t seem like a rigged show because the trainees were chosen solely by public votes. For example, there was live voting during competitions, alongside the online and global voting system. At least if any judge had a favorite contestant, it was never shown-maybe they edited it out.
My only reservation is that, like in many other shows, there were minors among the contestants. Some of the choreography felt inappropriate and uncomfortable to watch, which was shocking to me at times.
That said, most of the girls were incredibly talented. The stages might not have been completely "perfect," but they were good considering the variety of skills and the different levels of training among the contestants. In my opinion, the best performance was "Nightwalker" by Ten. He not only "trained" the team but also participated in the performance himself (definitely check it out!).
I’m not sure how many people watched this version of Chuang, but I’d love to read different opinions. The last episode aired in April, so I don’t remember all the details.
By the way, the debut group is called Gen1es.
Ohh I can recommend the survival show Scool! The judges are like so good at being helpful and there is such a good vibe in the show!
I LOVE THAT SHOW
as someone who’s watched a lot of kpop and tpop survival shows, i definitely feel like thai survival shows are nicer in general in terms of conditions for the trainees. my favorites are project alpha, 789 survival (although the judges there can be really harsh at times), and laz icon !!! i’m planning on watching chuang asia too
You might also like Chuang 2021 then. The judges were very supportive and even the contestants had great friendship among themselves. Overall the show was just so fun to watch.
I think Chinese judges in general are also just quite sweet! _Chuang_ from China hasn’t seen much drama around how the mentors treat the contestants, and _Idol Producer_ and _Youth With You_ were both praised for the kindness of both mentors and trainees to each other as well as a lack of “evil editing.”
In fact, I still remember how in _Idol Producer,_ Li Ronghao checked in on a contestant who was sick, and he also gave gentle speeches of advice and encouragement to contestants who were struggling to practice singing.
One show even had Zhou Shen as a mentor, and he’s amazing-and another had Mao Buyi, who I really like for how gentle he is. There were also seasons with more “internationally well-known” Chinese idols, like Lay Zhang and The8 aka Xu Minghao. They all seemed quite lovely!
The bonds formed between contestants on these shows were also just really sweet.
This show was one of the reasons Im no longer a fan of Lee Seung Gi. Ive been his fan since he debut and ive seen him in ups and down and this was the most disappointing things Ive ever seen. As someone who tried to fight for himself against unfair treatment to see how he is acting to these younger trainees was disgusting. He should have been a role model to them not a source of pain
The kindness and empathy of Sun Ying Hao makes me hope he finds a good label to actually debut in a group under. I'm afraid this show would only scrutinize him for speaking up for his fellow trainees, no, his fellow humans...
Time Turner is a big joke like you can't tell me thats an actual kpop survival show no way 😭☠️
Maybe it’s bc she is my favourite, but I’ve liked the show Wendy (Red Velvet) is mentoring on and how she personally teaches. I hate when the mentors look like they’re just there to torment the contestants without giving proper instruction on how to do better.
Wendy is a sweet, I am not her fan but she stole my hearth with her away of teaching gentle and very precise. She never scream shit just explain how to fix. Very well

Why is Lee Seunggi not being cancelled yet? I've had enough of this guy.
Gotta admit seunggi just better stay as mc like in pd48 instead of mentor 💀💀💀
Lee Seung Gi technically _is_ already cancelled, before even Starlight Boys in South Korea. He fallen out of people's favors because he married Lee Da in, and believe it not, it wasn't the typical "NO MY OPPA WHO I'M PARASOCIALLY DATING GOT MARRIED 😭" reaction this time. His fans and the general public were mad because Lee Da in comes from a controversial family of scammers. Granted, Da in didn't publicly partake in or endorse the scams, and Seung Gi is an adult who can do whatever he wants when it comes to his love life.
But the negative association of Lee Da In's family really badly rubbed off on Seung Gi's reputation, and some of his fans thought it was peak irony for Seung Gi to marry into a scammer family, when he famously fought back against his first entertainment label, because of how they exploited and scammed him out of his money. So domestically, before Starlight Boys, Seungi's reputation as SK's golden boy is in the toilet
Now that Seung Gi is on an international show, he's now on i-netizens s***list, and the western audience is discovering his past. Ironically, fans joked and rumored that Seung Gi took up the judge gig to clean his tainted rep

I wrote an old comment on _Starlight Boys_ before, so I’ll copy and paste it here because the sentiment still stands for me:
The state of how that show treated its trainees, by established kpop industry veterans even, did surprise me since the original Chinese version, _Idol Producer_ and _Youth With You,_ didn’t have the mistreatment issue. A lot of the mentors back then were actually praised by fans of Korean idol survival shows for being gentle and patient, and I remember one case where they gently urged a feverish trainee to rest and checked on him in his dorms (iirc it was _Idol Producer,_ with Li Ronghao).
I guess it’s still culturally different though… _Starlight Boys_ is primarily shot and managed by Korean staff and mentors, and kpop itself has established itself with an infamous reputation for putting a lot of pressure on its idols, both in training them to perfection but also in the standards for appearance and behaviour.
China’s industry is a little different because China’s emphasis on a culture of sincerity has bled over to the industry. And I’m not saying Korean society is inherently more shallow or cruel-Korea just has quite an intense emphasis on the hierarchy system, so authority figures have to be treated very formally and have the final say.
Even here with Sun Yinghao speaking out, he is a Chinese contestant and evidently felt brave enough to challenge the mentors’ authority, which would technically be discouraged in Korean society (and he did feel the need to later apologize for it when a trainee insisted he could keep going forever).
Either way, this isn’t a comment on which country or musical industry is better; just an expression of disappointment because I did actually enjoy _Idol Producer_ and _Youth With You,_ along with the bands and artists they gave us (despite their own controversies with stuff like fan waste). I’ll also be wishing these trainees the best.
the way my jaw dropped 19:40. HOW DID THEY ALLOWED THAT??!!!
fr though, I had to pause to recollect myself and look if someone in the comments had the same thought as me😭
@defnot.langit seriously like poor minors and innocent contestants who were just there to pursue their dreams. I'd be traumatized fr. Like wtf gago hahaha
Syo from starlight boys’ situation makes me so mad for him. It’s obvious biases and was completely unfair for him. I cope up view of the gap in opportunities for people of different backgrounds
i stumbled on to time turner and omg. my ears are still ringing and ended up with double vision for a solid minute
Universe League just started but it's promising. The cast act friendly, and all contestants are at least reasonably talented. There's a little overdramatization like every survival show, but it's nowhere as bad as the Produce series, so very tolerable.
I watched 2 episodes and it was fairly good.
To be honest the F&F survivals are the best svs that I've seen so far. Universe ticket was amazing of course it also was lacking some things but overall all it was pretty fair. Now the same goes to Universe league, unlike other survival shows it's not borning and it also have a creative system similiar to the voice.
21:03 is lowkey killing me - why’s she getting outdanced by someone in the “audience”?
As an outsider of the kpop community, this is the kind of overview, summary, and detailed presentation that we need! thank you
“Idols regularly perform up to thirty songs in their concerts” yeah if you’re Twice,,, expecting literal trainees to have the endurance of some of the most successful veteran idols in the industry is insane
You should do a retrospective on The Unit which aired on KBS back in 2017! It’s been a while so many new kpop fans prob havent heard of it
I enjoyed watching this show because the contestant had experienced it on stage, so the quality of their voice and dance are so good. I hope this show has season 2
that was so good
when i saw time turner on 3rd, i was wondering how worse the other could be because imo this is the trash of the trashest survival show lol
Agree
I wish you would have went over the disaster that was Boys24, another Mnet boys survival show that came out before Produce 101 Season 2 but quickly right after Season 1 ended. From contestants and member issues to just the overall energy of the show... it was not it to say the least.
As a viewer of the show while it was active and a fan of the final group, IN2IT (now SKYE), I feel like this show is completely forgotten when it comes to bringing up the fuckery that is Mnet survival shows. It's also unfortunate that a lot of the articles for the show are no longer easily available for research.
edit: Just wanted to add that I am someone who watches a lot of these shows including the Chinese and Japanese ones, and I still find Boys24 to be one of the cruelest.
I remember this mess every single time there's a small mention of survival shows (alongside Mixnine) and there's a possibility that Mnet doesn't want people to remember that this show existed. To what I remember (and don't quote me on this), during the first few episodes of Produce X101 and Treasure Box, both shows had trainees that also participated in Boys24, but never showed any footage or even mentioned that those contestants participated in a survival show previously (which surprised me with Produce because this show and Boys24 were both ran by Mnet and you would think they would be able to use any footage they had to build a small backstory for those boys).
@monib111 That was the conclusion I came to as well. If we take an even further step back, we should consider the formation of VIXX and their survival show competition type with the show MyDOL, which was also produced by Mnet.
That company has had their hands in these things for a long time now. You're correct on PDX101. 4 of the boys were contestants for Mixnine, and 1 was a Boys24 contestant. I didn't have the heart to watch Treasure Box at the time.
For Boys24 specifically, I remember several of the boys from the 24 members asking fans not to vote for them to make it into the final group, countless injuries yet still being forced to perform, several member controversies - it's no wonder they don't want to ever bring the show nor the group up in any context. One of my picks was a YG trainee prior, and even when asked to come back afterward, he declined despite having such a strong dream to be a singer and idol. In another world, one of my other picks would have maybe debut under SM as a main vocal. Currently, one of my other picks is a tattoo artist after his group disbanded.
People need to realize how awful Mnet truly is. I loved all the groups made by their shows, but it shouldn't have been at the cost of this.
In2it is still around?! I didn't realise they changed their name, I thought they just quietly disbanded!
wait i heard of skye recently, isn’t one of the members on project 7 or something?
@@einaanna They left MMO Ent in 2020 and rebranded in 2023!
If that Infinity challenge on Starlight boys had been done in front of a live audience, the judges would've been screamed at and either the audience would be kicked out or the challenge would've been forced to end. "Taking away from the audiences right to enjoy the performance"??? We don't want to watch our idols suffer, cry and hurt themselves. No fan wants their idol to dance on stage to the point of collapse. Are they insane?? The took the name "survival show" too literally and though it meant "whoever lives long enough can debut". I stopped watching Starlight Boys during the first episode. I had a bad feeling after seeing how messed up the judging criteria was, at the time, I had no idea just how bad it was going to get.
I'm wondering what concerts Lee Song Gi has been to? Last time I checked, most groups don't sing 30 songs in one concert. And they also take breaks. Like they would talk to the audience and break into their units, so that some of the members could take a breather.
For good survival shows, I'd recommend SBS's two boy group shows!!!
1. Loud (2021) was a survival show I personally really liked, it was judged by PSY and JYP and there was no evil editing or drama amongst the trainees! The performances were also insane, and a lot of the songs were self written and produced by the contestants. The trainees didn't seem to be overworked, some of the students even went to school as usual during the show! The show had very unique rounds in the second half of the show. There were two final groups - The New Six (debuted 2022 under P Nation) and Kickflip (they'll debut under JYP in January 2025!)
2. Universe League (2024) just started, but it seems really promising! It has a unique sports concept with a different format to the average survival show, featuring teams. Unlike a lot of other shows, most of the more popular trainees are over the age of 20 and are really talented. The contestants were all picked quite well, and there are so many talents that I'm really looking forward too!
these recs seem really promising! I'm gonna check them out
The “concert” line is such BS, groups literally stop every 3-4 songs to catch their breath, drink some water, interact with the crowd, change costumes, etc. They stop all the time! It’s why a tour based on an album that’s 70 minutes long can take over 2.5 hours on stage!
The starlight boys contestants love Sun Yinghao for that. They're always referencing it. In a recent episode, the contestants all had to pick another contestant they wanted to get closer to, and Yinghao was chosen by most of them. Hope he does well.
I don’t know those survival shows exist until I noticed the news and videos on RUclips
28:09 you should try to watch NCT Universe: Lastart, the survival show that created NCT Wish. I think it's one of the better survival show (which came as a surprise since it's from sm). It didn't outsource judges, had no audience vote, had good quality trainees who showed good performances, and no unnecessary look into the trainees' bedrooms or orhter private places. It's a pretty straightforward one, but I don't think it's a bad thing. I wonder what you'd think of that one 😊
Yes! Now obviously I'm biased saying this as an NCTzen, but the show was surprisingly well-made given that SM didn't necessarily have the experience of producing or being involved with a show like this. They took out a potentially major source of controversy - audience voting - and kept it strictly to the judgment of SM's legacy of incredible performers (you can't go wrong with BoA as a lead judge, mentor, and co-host), which ensures the final group would have always been very talented from the jump.
Not to mention you have actual NCT members throughout giving advice to their future teammates, so all in all it felt oddly more supportive, and much less dramatic than other survival shows. Very talent-focused, left very little room for drama since the trainees all essentially knew each other, and had excellent mentors. Very great show!
9:48 if Pre debut BTS were to audition in Starlight boys, I'd say none of them had chance to debut 😂
What do you mean?
@@annalisekelley1716 It's just my guess but I think they mean since the judges' standards for the trainees on that show were so unrealistically high, and since the members of BTS had to work hard to improve their skills a lot over time (for example Jin started out with no singing or dancing experience), they would not have been given the chance to debut even though we now know that they became super successful. Plus this show was weirdly focused on visuals/beauty standards and honestly most of the BTS members would not fit those typical Korean beauty standards.
That is such a good point though, it shows that survival shows like this are not a good method for making groups that can grow and become more successful over time (with a few exceptions). They are so focused on making a "perfect" group from the start that they end up filtering out trainees with a lot of potential who just need a little more time and training. I think that's why many of these survival show groups only have short temporary contracts, because they were never intended to last more than a couple years.
Ikon and Winner's (and I think Twice's too) survival show is an internal project by their own company, an already big company who has produced legendary groups. But Up To You and Time Turner belong to questionable entities.
THIS IS LITERALLY THE DEFINITION OF PURE CRUELTY! 😭😭😭
I'm so glad you're talking about time turner because even watching that show from the outside looking in (i dont have tiktok) it was one hell of a mess lmao
I feel like I downloaded Tiktok for nothing...
Uptoyou is downright disgusting because they're wearing school uniforms ffs!!
I'm truly horrified. I'm getting angry. These poor kids on these awful shows.
Starlight boys was also so harsh because the contestants had NO clue when it would end! It was specifically done to harm them mentally and physically! In a show you will not have to do the most intense part of a dance over and over again and you will know how to pace yourself.
"idols perform up to 30 songs during concerts" yeah but they train months for it and also during concerts they have longer breaks to talk to fans
also they peform songs without choreos as well
they're literally just looking for excuses to treat them harshly
My heart breaks for Syo. He was genuinely such a talented dude but unfortunately some people in the entertainment industry are still backwards minded... I hope he realizes his dreams away from such people
He sadly has been eliminated. But, I do hope he doesn't give up on his dreams of becoming an idol. He has a lot of potential.
17:46: Wait, Starlight Boys wasn't the worst??? What the F------! (Dreading seeing what WAS the worst!)... EDIT: Yep, number 1 IS the worst!! - Does Korea have an equivalent FCC/FTC that can regulate this? Or child labor laws? Just wondering.
Girl, Starlight Boys' controversy were in the 2 eps
If you've heard anything about NJ and you'll know that chuld labor laws their are minimal.
actually watching your vids within the first 4 minutes of upload, notification bell need me for updates
15:43 honestly that episode sounds like pure rage-bait, except for the participants were actually tormented
My teenage Girls would be fine if the concept was always whole some and cute until everyone is 18, but it wasn't
Even the name just sounds creepy...
That non stop dance challenge was sooo dystopian literally reminded me of the animated show called Alien stage.
to be honset, i think survival shows were always exploitative and manipulative and rigged, these ones are just worse at hiding it.
I'm still watching Starlight Boys and it has to be the cruelest survival show there is... Besides the episode 2 infinite signal song challenge the whatever round was next changes the contestants votes depending on which group won the rounds and depending on the contestants vote placements during the live performances (depending only on the live votes tho -- and meaning the winner groups 1st place gets 70k more votes and the loser groups 7th place loses 70k votes and winner 2nd place 60k more votes and loser 6th place loses 60k votes and so on). I kinda get that they want to keep the most entertaining live performers in the show, but it's a very cruel way to take away the votes from other contestants... and most of the fans are there anyways so it's not nearly always that the most talented ones get the most votes... 😮💨After that round people can also buy votes (of course there's 1 free vote per day but still... 🙄)
Correction: The vote stealing rambling part is about Project 7... I watch both of the shows at the same time and I was confusing myself lol...
i think you're confusing starlight boys to project 7 😅
the stealing vote one is from project 7, starlight boys didn't have that kind of system
@@jea9978 oh, my bad! I'm indeed watching both of the shows in support of the BAE173 members so it's no wonder I'm confusing them... Thanks for the correction!
Same
Shows like these are the reason K-Pop is still seen as a cruel business and people hat on the industry. Not to say that we know whats going on behind the scenes in every company or group but just imagine the treatment of these trainees or idols if they are comfortable putting stuff like that in the show for everyone to see. Can't even imagine!
Starlight boys was actually so insanely unfair. It was sooooo obviously racist and just made no sense because the judges complimented only the ones they favored and not the ones that actually deserved it.
I was interested in Time Turner mainly to support Lea. But I later took a step back after seeing clips of the show, and I was disappointed in the poor quality.
Now I'm worried about the official debut and the song(s)...
Lee Seunggi had just sue his agency for a slave contract...Wtf is he talking about?? Dude the last one though?? Wtf?
the survival show fatigue is real. ever since produce x 101 the genre has been getting worse and worse
Sun Yinghao could've never known that speaking up would get him so much international fame from people who were incredibly supportive and proud of him. He did it despite the fact it would essentially sabotage him in the show and he likely believed it would completely ruin him. I can't speak to what knetz think, but international fans still love him for what he did and I believe will continue to support him if he decides to debut, which no one would fault him if he didn't
I have not watched starlight boys cause i knew its gonna be awful based on GP999 already but when i saw IXFORM boys my heart sank... those poor guys, they already went through 1 survivor show(that ended in big scandal btw) just to be shoved into even worse one ;_;
starlight boys is rlly shit.. sun yinghao (14:58) along with 3 trainees withdraw from the show bc yinghao revealed that he was receiving mistreatment
Starlight boys is coming at us the that ANTM Energy. If you feel like fainting, you don't want it bad enough I guess
Woof thats hard to watch again in this day and age
Great video! Great writing, great execution, and very to-the-point!
Evangeline, I admire your tolerance for pain, making yourself watch these godawful shows.
I've never been a fan of elimination shows in general but I can at least see why many enjoy them.
THESE, though? Textbook "aw hell naw!" That second one was so insanely racist even by Korean standards
"But we are humans, not machines". Very true, and a lot of people forget that.
Performing 30 songs in a concert is not even a common thing. Even the successful K-Pop group like BlackPink only have around 20+ original recorded songs. And they usually perform around 14 to 18 songs on their concerts. Plus Le Seungi himself never peformed more than 20 songs in one show. So what in the h*ll was he yappin' about?
Agreed. The only person I know who’s nuts enough to do 45 songs is Taylor Swift with her Eras tour. More power to her, but man. Over 3 hrs is a long concert! 2 hrs is really long enough. I honestly can’t believe some of her fans were wearing depends just to not have to use the bathroom 😳

The Global Billboard 200 is not that prestigious.
So I excluded the Global Billboard 200.
The Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Hot 200 are the only charts that are considered prestigious.
What makes me so upset is that Syo improved so so much during the show. Genuinely one of the more talented artists, but none of the judges ever complement him and none of the live audience votes for him. Like in the latest episode he sang so well yet the judges didn’t even bat an eye.
Lee seunggi shouldnt have even be a judge he’s not an idol nor has been on tours idols take breaks between concerts and have time to chill on stage and take a breath “dance til you drop” is a insane challenge
The starlight boys things breaks my heart especially because I liked quite a few on the judge panel as idols but they all sat back and just let this abuse happen I don't think I can continue to support them good for Sun Yinghao speaking up for them
Starlight boys got me fuming like the discrimination it's outrageous never been so pissed off by a survival show
I thought Starlight Boys was disturbing but nothing could've prepared me for the first pick...dear God. The relief I felt when a group of adult streamers didn't actually debut with a child.
I lost it watching starlight boys when the contestants were crying out of breath and the judges start walking around going "smile~". Like what the actual hell?
the only survival ive watched in real time is PeakTime tbh it was a really nice one, everyone was friends with each other and it wasnt cruel, now I'm watching project7 bc my bae173 boys are there, i tried to watch starlight boys but it was really awful
Even idols themselves has breaks after every set which contains about 5-6 songs each, not to forget the vcr's and the backup vocals or just lip-syncing
Kpopalypse thanks you for your sacrifice, Ploopy!
I just don't understand how stupid can starlight boys show be??? How do the judges expect to judge the contestants in a whole group???
