- Weekend construction had 3 trains terminating at 96th St, and using the middle track at 103rd St on the 1 line to turn around. This cut off the 3 line's access to 148th St yard. This, combined with the fact that multiple R62 sets were in the shop, led to R62A cars from the 1 line running in 3 service.
R62As looks very similar to the R62s that normally run on the 3 line. Here are a couple differences between the two types of cars:
R62s were built by Kawasaki, R62As built by Bombardier.
R62s have General Electric propulsion and WABCO braking, R62As have Westinghouse propulsion and NYAB braking.
The front route bullet font on the R62As is larger than on the R62s.
The R62s have orange yard stickers under their number plates, the R62As that ran on the 3 line this weekend were from the 1 line, and all had red yard stickers under their number plates.
The R62s have latches on the end doors that allow them to be hooked open, the R62As have had these removed.

The R62As used to have Yellow Yard stickers under the yard plate in 2001. And right now the R62As have red and on the 6 it’s purple.

Way back in the day the 3 line R62As had blue stickers, while the 1 line has red stickers, R62 on the 4 had orange stickers and the the R62A on the 6 had the yellow stickers
@Dagamez DM Now the R62AS 6 trains has the Green 🍏 stickers on them . No more yellow 🟡 stickers on them. The R62S still have those orange 🍊 stickers on them from the Jerome Ave 4 line.
I vividly remember those R62s (on the 3) used to run on the 4 line.
Back in the day only 9 car trains ran to 148th Street. Love that turn at Saratoga Ave!

+Dj Hammers Glad u pointed out to others who commented the difference between the 62 & 62A. To me? The 62A has that distinct airbrake noise and makes a whistling type sound when decreasing speed. Great Video btw. U were all over the 3 line chasing the 62A!
The R62 and R62A have different air brake systems. Also I notice that the interior lighting appears to be brighter on the R62A.
The 9 car consists on the 3 were discontinued when the services returned to normal after 9/11/01. Apparently there were enough cars available due to delivery of the R142 and R142A to operate 10 car trains on all A division lines except the 7 and the 42nd St. shuttle.

Now the R62s are taking over the 3 line. Nomore R62as on the Pelham. You will find them on the 1/6 trains until the brand new R262s comes for Cbtcs in the future

I am from New York and I ride the three train before
imo the most obvious difference is that when you are riding, the r62 lights will periodically turn off on third rail gaps whereas that doesn't happen on r62as.
107th and Bway baby 5 story walkup! The Olympia? across the street used to show double features like East of Eden and Rebel without a Cause for like $3 in the 80's.

+bluer68 Yeah. Those R62As were moved to the 7 line, displaced by R62s from the 4 line which were displaced by arriving R142 cars.

It's just occurred to me: every car in these trains is a driving motor, isn't it? No wonder sone NYC Subway trainsets have such great acceleration! Are all subway cars across all train models DM?

The last I know that the R62As ran on the 3 was about the late 90s to the early 2000s
I rode on one of these R62A's running on the 3 line. I was wondering what it was all about, other than the construction. Thanks!

I remember when I was younger, I would see tje R62a's on the 3 train with blue stickers in them, and the 4 trains had the Redbirds and also the R62s with the now orange stickers

Damn, I don't ever remember R62As on the 5 trains ever but I always wished to see one, the cool thing is the last redbird I ever rode was an R33 5 train going to Fulton st

Eternal the 3 is not rarer than the Z. The Z is the rarest service, with trains only operating in 2 time periods a day.

+Dj Hammers At Avenue M, there were no signs of Local Service on the B... I am not even sure that it counts as wrong rails.
No signs at Kings Hwy either.
+Tonyboy515 Sometimes a B train will run local because of a gap in Q service or an issue further up the line on the express tracks.
Also mention the fact that most R62A rollsigns in between cars are blanked out, while most R62's display a (1) or a (3) rollsign (mostly 3)

None of the R62As that ran on the 3 line that weekend had RFW's. The only sets with RFWs are on the 7 line now.

why does the side of the 3 train the 1?
Another difference between R62 and R62a is on the destination roll sign on the window has words saying example manhattan and south Ferry on top of each other on the R62a. But on the R62 it has the words in a straight line. And also you are right about the trains from the 1 line at 1:37 you can clearly tell it has been a 1 train. And the window frame is more flat on the R62A then the R62. The R62 doors has a two squared handle creator on the doors.

#3 train must use there own R62 cars equipment not the 1 trains equipment therefore a strip map sticker was displayed indicating 1 train on it! It’s confusing for other passengers and tourists too!

As a former MTA employee for 18 years i have seen them all. The difference between the R62 and R62A'S are the different propulsions and rollsigns. The R62 trains have a much brighter headlight system than the R62a's.

P Jay maybe the 3 can permanently use R62As from the 6. And then Kawashaki can make more R188s for the 6. And then for the rest for the 7 so that way the 6 and 7 can have 100% R188s. And one R62A can go on the 1 to replace the one set R62. So then the R62 would retire.
Not true they would simply open the doors in the front section only just as on the current R62 consists. They were doing this on the 1 at the old SF loop station until the new SF station finally reopened in June.

2HandedTrident nope these are R62A’s borrowed from the 1 line because a couple of R62’s were trapped at 148th street therefore these had to be used
The car numbers on those were the 2200s which means, they are a R62A. If they were 1301-1625... I believe, then they are R62s.
R62s are assigned to 3 now, the one difference I can say that all the rollsign bullet routes on the R62 are shown as (3) (sometimes a different) R62As don’t have all the bullet routes shown on the roll sign as they are only shown in used cabs, R62’s rollsign bullet are shown even with unused half cabs.
