  • We're continuing our DIY Service B work on our 2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 3.0L V6 diesel with 7-speed 7GTronic+ transnmission. We opted to save a LOT of money by doing this work ourselves.
If you watched our last video, and followed along on your own van, consider trying this job next. It requires a bit more tooling, but the bulk of the cost is in the oils required. In the end, it was far cheaper than paying the dealership to perform Service B for us.
Here's a bit of technical information for the job. We used 13L of engine oil. There are a few specifications that may be used. 229.52 is the Mercedes-Benz specification for engine oil that we used. 229.51 is also allowable, but note that it requires a shorter service interval and may produce more buildup in the diesel particulate filter. We chose to use the lowest-sulfur specification oil to prolong the life of our SCR and DPF systems. Recommended oil weights are 5W30 and 5W40, depending on the local ambient temperature. Use 5W30 for colder climates. The fluid capacity is 12.5L, but we cover how to verify the proper fluid level through the ECU.
Moving on to the transmission fluid change, we used 9L of ATF134FE fluid. This is for Mercedes-Benz specification 236.15. Their two most recent transmission fluid specifications are colored red and blue-green. This helps to differentiate the fluids visually. If you're not sure what fluid you need, ensure that you replace the fluid with like-colored fluid. ATF134 fluid is red and ATF134FE fluid is blue-green. The 7G Tronic+ or 7G Tronic PLUS transmission requires ATF134FE fluid. The specified fluid capacity is 9L, but we also show how to verify the proper fluid level using Xentry to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
Hopefully this helps at least one person out there to do this job on their own. It's slightly technically challenging, but it was not terribly difficult. It was well worth the cost savings to us to do it on our own. We saved several hundred dollars, and we can rest assured that the job was done correctly. If nothing else, it gives us a bit more confidence in tackling more jobs in the future on our own.
