Alright that is actually amazing - I will definitely be waiting for the main video! If everything is looking so good I'll definitely get some of these as a sweet arch Linux machine!
Man, you got the worst version of the T400, with THAT cpu (T7200 is a horrible one). If you got a Penryn equipped T400 you could put a Core 2 Xtreme X9100 there, and that CPU rock. I had a T400 with a X9100 and 8GB of RAM working with a ExpressCard eGPU using GTX 660 Ti, and that system was crazy fast (for a 2008 laptop). Only reason I don't have it anymore is because I let the laptop fall on the ground some months ago, and it was damaged pretty bad.
Sorry guys, for some reason RUclips didn't notify me about your comments, and I just found out about them today (as of... now). First: if you're going for a T400, get a Penryn equipped one, like one with P8400 processor or something like that. There are BIOS mods that allow you to get a Merom equipped T400 to accept a Penryn CPU, but it is easier to just get a Penryn one. Then get a Core 2 Xtreme X9100 for your T400. That CPU is crazy fast (for such an old architecture). Second: the ExpressCard eGPU: it does work pretty well, but limited to a PCIe x1 v1.1 speed. Nvidia has data compression for that generation of CPUs that helps a lot, but you can only use it up to a certain version of the driver (don't remember which now, but it is pretty simple to find out online). In order to get the eGPU to work properly, I would turn on the laptop, then put it to "sleep" mode, then connect the eGPU, then turn the laptop back on. About 10 seconds later it would recognize the eGPU and send video through it (I used an external monitor).
i have a t7250 in my dell latitude e5500 do you know somewhere i can see what i can upgrade it with would be nice getting some more cpu performance seeing my cpu is very often pegged at 99%
Keeping i mind the price and the space for the GPU, I assume that a PCI-E EXP GDC E-GPU Dock makes more sense, keeping in mind that they are both connecting at a PCI-E x1.
You could use a PCIE extender for a better grapihic card and cut the loud mini-fan. You can power with external powersource if that gpu needs power. Does the dock work with X230 t430??
I have problems with T60p and 2503 advanced dock, transition between internal and external gpu is not seamless, If I manage to make e-gpu, operational, it works on external screen only, internal gpu (FireGl 5250) is disabled and laptop's screen is off, I tried to change display setting in BIOS, but I made it worse :D (reinstalling drivers helps to make internal gpu operational again) I tried several gpu's, Radeon R7 250 is current, I tried Geforce 9600 (with pci-e extender) and GT 730 It would be grate if you make tutorial of sorts how to set it up correctly. BTW I am using Windows 7 32 bit to keep it "retro"-ish (unfortunately Steam will stop to work on XP in the end pf 2018)
Hey! Excellent video! I followed your vids and have been playing on this rig for about a year and I am so happy! I actually ended up using a T400 which is great but I know you were saying with a T60, or T61 I believe you can use 3g of RAM instead of the 2g with the T400. I recently picked up an R61 for a great price. Can that be used as well? With 3g? Thanks again for the info and awesome presentations!
Hi, I have a question. I have the Lenovo Thinkpad T420 with an Nvidia NVS 4200. Can I use this Docking Station with other graphics card and play modern ESports games such as Rocket league and CS GO? Thank you
do you have to setup in bios the preferred graphic card choice? is there a preferred order list or it has to be manually set each time you dock/undock the pc? thank you , great work!
This is neat! I wish that it was a true x16 link instead of the X1 link, but it's still really cool to see! I could see a SATA HBA card in this, and it would be interesting
Be aware that the PCIe on this dock accept x16 cards but only got x1 speed so it would be a bottleneck of some kind (still better than a T60 GPU though)
Checked out the X9100 as a CPU upgrade for the T400? I had one before with that cpu as an upgrade. Should be about 20$ if you buy it off aliexpress. Even when it comes to cooling it should work fine.
The location of those screws and the design of it is fairly typical. I would recommend you get an ifixit kit, they are pretty great for this kind of stuff.
Can the dock station power the laptop directly? I ask why the charging center no longer works, so I want to know if the Dock station would serve me as a desktop pc
I use a SL510 and this looks very appealing for me, i like to fiddle with old tech. So would such a dock paired with a gtx1030 work with it? I was thinking if i update the core 2 duo to strongest and the Ram to its max anyways.
have you tried the egpu adapter through ExpressCard on a more modern thinkpad (like a T430)? If yes, how would you compare the experiences? the ratio of cost to docking practicality? (kinda like the whole one cable thunderbolt trend)
@@jordananderson8299 it's a port that was quite common on old laptops. This dock has two limits: size and TDP. Size because it has limited internal space, only for a low profile GPU (can be avoided with a PCIe extension cable) and TDP because the dock will only supply up to 50W for the GPU.
I'd love to see you test one of the external gpu solutions that instead of using a mini pci slot (usually the wifi card slot) they run off of express card, I'd love that.

I've been searching and searching... I want this dock... I've found some, but no one anywhere actually lists what it works with. Does this work with the T420 and or T430? I've got a 420 with an i7 2760 QM pulling down 8500 passmark... and a 430 with an i7 3740qm pulling 9k... That's enough to feed a 1080ti frames and not even come close to a bottleneck... I want to do this now.. badly. Just got the the part about it being in a 1x slot... I don't even care... I'm still throwing my money at the screen hoping for the best. I wonder if you could come out of the msata / mini pcie in the machine... maybe an unused wifi or wwan slot if not populated with an ssd... that should at least give you pcie 4x. With some modifications. Sad they didn't take more advantage of that breakout docking connector, as it could had provided more than 1x.
