Hi! Thanks for making such interesting video. Your video has aroused my interest in buying the same docking station. However, I came across a problem when installing the driver of a GT 1030 display card. The device manager said the card was unusable due to an error code 12. Can you please help me solve my problem by telling me how you installed the display card on your docking station? Specs of my t61p: ram: 8gb cpu: core 2 extreme x9000 display card: GT 1030 2GB operating system: windows 10 1909
Could you please let me know how you were able to get hold of the replacement keys? Since over a week I am struggling to place an order at ITExchange company but as I am in Germany they want to ship to UK, then to Switzerland and then to Germany and the guy in Switzerland does not seem to be very motivated to get this going. Overall this process does not seem to make any sense to me.
It runs Crysis. Therefore, this is officially a legit gaming PC, possibly the first time "legit gaming PC" has been used regarding a T60. Outstanding work.
If you believe it or not, the T60 actually runs Crysis with it's integrated GPU, the ATI X1400. Not terribly fast, but at around 20-30FPS, which is playable, especially for Crysis. Even High end desktops struggled with it when it launched
@Juuhazan We’ll see, I don’t want to be redundant compared to this video. I am using a different graphics card and some of my game selections are different.
I was trying really hard to push this out before exams week that way I will be free to study later on. There are still a lot of popular games that I left out that you should take a look at. I know a lot of people are probably disappointed I did not give minecraft a go.
Was the 4GB ram limitation due to memory address availability in regards to assigning PCIe devices? If so, you might be able to perform a DSDT override. Information on that can be on egpu.io's website.
I think you might be right. This is something I am going to look into after my finals are over, I really want to get my upgraded T400 working with the dock.
You do a great job Bro. Now, I can't wait to see my Frankenpad (T9300 and 8 gb RAM) and my W500 (T9900 and 8 gb RAM) running in this docking station. Regards..
Hey man, Idk if you'll see this but I have the same dock with a ThinkPad T61 that is upgraded to 4GB RAM (all usable) a T9300 Core 2 Duo, and a 1440 x 900 internal display. I use it every day for work along side my W530 and it's a wonderful machine. Back in the day I ran a GT 520 and it was an absolutely awful experience, no drivers were compatible, and so many more issues with docking and undocking. (AMD cards actually worked better) I use it without an external GPU just for remote desktop connections. I just ordered a GT 1030 to do some benchmarks on it to see if i can get AT LEAST a few more years out of this thing as a usable machine rather than an antique display piece. So if you're interested in the numbers i come back with let me know!
I’m buying a *known safe* T61 board and doing a Frankenpad T601 setup as the money becomes available, I’ll have to see if the newer Core 2 Duo processors that the T61 supports and the higher RAM limit (4 GB, 8 GB with Middletown’s BIOS) make any sort of substantial improvement over the T60. It would be a dream to use my ThinkPad for Fortnite! :P
Hey, I have a Lenovo w700ds(that rare dual screen model from 2008) do you know of any good docks that would support a desktop GPU similar to that showed in this video?
I don't unfortunately. You're a lucky man / woman though, a lot of people dream of owning one of those (including yours truly). Sudos is right, those W700ds laptops sell for crazy money on the used market.
AA Computers and Technology Ok, thanks anyway, and I’m don’t think I’ll ever be selling this laptop because of how much it’s worth and how much I use it.
The most viable option would be an eGPU setup via an Express Card Beast adapter. I used a GTX 970 with that adapter and an external PSU in my T420 with no issues. GTX 10XX series need a mod to overcome error 43 in Windows 10, but they can be used too. Best regards!
You need to adjust the TOLUD on that t400. You're hitting memory addressing limitations due to the bios like a lot of other egpu solutions. I recommend looking in to documentation for t400 egpu solutions with the expresscard slot or mpcie slots. The documentation for getting that to work should fix it
In the description it says the T400 is compatible does that mean the T440P wouldn't be? Didn't know if that meant like T4XXX or just the T4000 model specifically.
Can you please tell me how did u get the GT1030 to work and what driver do u have ? i can get it to recognize and install a driver but then i get code error 43 and it does not do anything 3D.
I have one of these docking stations but the performance is unchanged when docked, maybe ots an issue with windows xp ? I'm going to try it with linux and see if that changes anything
Please please pllllleeeeaase test a express card egpu doc, almost all old thinkpads have it, and I believe it alots you a 4x connect, I'd would LOVE to see that
Wow, after seeing those results, I'd be really intreagued to find out, if using a T61/R61 with 4GB RAM and a T9300 (my got-to-on-the-go-daily-driver) or even a quad core machine would result in a noticable performance bump. Do you plan on any more experimentation with that setup?
You aren’t right!! There is no limitations for the ram!!I use my monster T61p with x9000 and 8 gb ddr2/800 and have no problem!! The problem maybe come from your t60.regards
Yes t60 and t60p have stupid limitation about ram because of the chipset.when you put 2x2gb ddr2/800 it will use 3 gb,but it mustn’t be a problem to work with dock! Try with t61 min with middleton bios for sure you will get much better results! Regards
Hahaha..I always wondering that "slot" at the bottom of lenovo thinkpad series..never knew its function..so awesome..i want to buy 1 of the dock..where can i found it?
Is there a similar dock for the X200? That's currently my only working ThinkPad. :( I'm looking at other eGPU solutions, but this would be cool as hell.
Ozzelot I have an x220 and have the same question. I have a 1060 in my my main rig and a gtx 1050 that I sold on eBay but they fucked it up so I might get it back so I’d be nice to be able to max out settings on a laptop.
I am curious the latest model Thinkpad that will work with. I bet it's pulling pcie from the South bridge meaning if a t430 works for ivy bridge you'd probably get pci-e 2.0 instead of 1.0. hell I wonder if Optimus works even to get that compression going
How the hell did you managed to get that 1030 work with this docking station? I am completely stuck, my T60 doesn't even boot up, the screen doesn't even come on. I have wasted like 2 hours already, and I am exactly at where I started, haven't managed to take even one step forward. It's infuriating. It would have been great if you went through the actual installation process in the video, and showed how you managed to get it working, because it's anything but straight forward.
Most Thinkpads work best with Nvidia GPUs as those allow the use of the internal LCD screen for video output. With AMD you're forced to use an external monitor. Best regards!

@@TheRailroad99 You're ruining my fun :(
One of the best videos you made. It's incredible and uncommon, I like videos with this kind of content. Congratulations!
Modern and retro hardware mixing is interesting... Keep it up.
Congrats! You beat me to it! Great video as always.
You were planning to pull off something like this? That's rad, I'd like to see your take on it as well.
@Juuhazan We’ll see, I don’t want to be redundant compared to this video. I am using a different graphics card and some of my game selections are different.

@CAT GARCIA An old Radeon HD card, 7500 series I think. 1 GB VRAM. Please turn off caps lock next time.

and now just to mod the dock to take a full size dual slot card like a 1070/rx590
I am looking for this too, as I have a T400 and that dock too, but couldn't make it work with a gpu.
Does the Thinkpad T430 works with this? Ive read the description and it says, T400, does it mean the whole series?
Love all of your videos! Keep up the great work man!

I have one of those and you just have to press eject button and then press unlatch lever to take the laptop off, no need for turning it off.
Hey, I have a Lenovo w700ds(that rare dual screen model from 2008) do you know of any good docks that would support a desktop GPU similar to that showed in this video?
you're better off selling the w700ds for crazy money on ebay and getting something else for the price of a dock that could support that beast.
I don't unfortunately. You're a lucky man / woman though, a lot of people dream of owning one of those (including yours truly). Sudos is right, those W700ds laptops sell for crazy money on the used market.

Would this kind of setup work with a t440p ?
i hope to see pc expert like you in my area 😭so genius!!
Excellent review. That dock must be really expensive and rare, right?
Too bad my thinkpad x200 is not compatible.

@@AAComputersandTechnology ill try that, thanks for the fast reply
@@AAComputersandTechnology did the trick ! epic combining a T60 with GT1030. but no sound yet ...
In bf1 the gpu had nothing to do with the lag, 3gb of ram and a core 2 duo is just ridiculous for faming
🙂 thank you for the neat experiments ✌️😏
Would you make a video on the Express card docks for your w541
Oh my god, I was playing on my T400 with Radeon 7870XT like that :D
I have one of these docking stations but the performance is unchanged when docked, maybe ots an issue with windows xp ? I'm going to try it with linux and see if that changes anything
With the Middleton bios you should be able to use 4gig of ram instead of 3.
Cool project

We are in need for an affortable laptop with the 2200g or 2400g.
You could probably play at 4k with the 1060 and still have the same performance as the 1030.
But can support thinkpad model X230? RAM of my laptop is 8gb ddr3.
Lenovo Thinkpad Advanced Dock for T430 exists?

I'm going to spend some more time over my winter break to see if I can get the T400 to work with the dock.
Good that we have cheaper alternative called EXP GDC for mpcie or pcmcia slot.

The PC Switch!
If you had the t7600 and 3gb of ram with 1060, I think it will increase the performance.
Does it even cool the laptop sufficiently?
Would like to see this with a T500 with 8GB RAM.

Fun fact: you can get the same amount of fps when you swap in more ram even if it is on near lowest settings possible.

So no t440 huh?

Actually, that's better performance the I thought, since I expected a huge bottleneck.
Though I am sure that using Linux might reduce RAM usage, and possibly CPU usage too.
