  • Experimenting with a new style here!
    Roller Coaster restraints come in all different shapes and sizes, however some are good, some are bad and some are quite simply awful! In this video I take a look at several specific designs and rank them in the classic tier list, from the top S class to the failure of F class
    I'll cover designs from RMC, Intamin, Premiere and more, so let me know what you think of these restraints and if this sort of video is something you'd like to see more of

    3: B&M clamshell 2: Inamin T-bars: 1 : Single position lap bars/buzz bars.

    B&M coasters don't usually wow me, but I can't argue the clamshell is one of the best restraints of all time. Good place to start!

    I appreciate this as someone who hasn't experienced most of these restraints. From my limited experiences, your opinions seem to match up pretty well with mine; RMC restraints are not comfortable at all to me, and they really have a tendency to dig into your thighs, especially if you're a larger rider like myself. They're also some of the least accommodating lap bars I've experienced thus far (though I think the worst offender is old-school Intamin over-the-shoulder restraints, like on their impulse coasters).

      @MinkyBoodle44 I like them just because its basically impossible to get stapled and that's why I don't like Mack lapbars

    As someone who loves rollercoasters but hasn't got to ride anywhere near as many as I'd like this is a great list and you deliver information entertainingly and unsensationally which I appreciate. You keep making them I and my family will keep watching them.

    How I’d rank em, covering most of the restraints I’ve encountered
    S tier - B&M Clamshells.
    Intamin Soft Straps (Intimidator 305, Maverick etc.)
    Buzzbars/anything with just seatbelts (only ridden Sea Dragon with it, but it’s a crazy sensation even on small coasters!)
    A tier - GCI Millennium Flyer lap bars.
    Gravity Group Timberliners.
    RMC lap bars.
    Intamin lap bars (Millennium Force variant.)
    B&M Vest Restraints.
    Maurer Spinning coaster lap bars.
    Vekoma family suspended lap bars. (Dragon Flier)
    B&M Flyer vest restraints.
    B tier - Premier Rides lap bars (Flight of Fear variant.)
    Arrow Mine Train lap bars.
    Vekoma Flying Dutchman vest restraints.
    S&S free spin vest restraints.
    C tier - B&M OTSR (floorless variant, not invert!)
    Arrow Suspended coaster OTSR.
    Zamperla spinning coaster lap bars.
    D tier - Skyrush lap bars.
    PTC lap bars (three row per car variant.)
    Arrow looper OTSR.
    F tier - PTC lap bars. (two row per car variant.)
    Arrow Hyper lap bars. (Magnum XL 200, don’t know if The Big One has em.)
    Vekoma SLC OTSR.
    B&M OTSR (Invert variant.)
    And lastly whatever tf kind of lap bar Lightning Run at Kentucky Kingdom has (I got stapled so bad on that I almost cried. 😵)
    As you can see I’m very particular about restraints, they can completely ruin a ride for me, and I don’t be giving them the benefit of the doubt for it.
    Funny story is I skipped out on Comet at Hershey Park cuz I thought they had PTC trains, then later I find out it actually had Buzzbars and is now being replaced with them. 😫
    There’s some I didn’t really feel comfortable placing anywhere, like the Intamin hard strap, I’ve only been on King Da Ka with it and it wasn’t that bad, but I know those can be pretty awful on layouts with more transitions.

      @RollercoasterDavid  4 месяца назад +2

      is there that much difference between 2 and 3 row PTC trains? I ranked them the same. The intamin hard strap is not good, my poor shoulders were black and blue after marathoning i-speed!

    My top 5 are:
    5- Intamin new overhead lapbars.
    4- Mack rides overhead lapbars.
    3- Intamin T bars
    2- Phantoms Revenge's lap bars.
    1- B&M Clamshells.

    It’s very rare that I watch a list video and agree with absolutely everything, but that’s the case here. I’d just add a couple, as for me the three S-tier restraints are clamshells, buzz bars, and whatever the restraints on Time Traveler/Ride to Happiness are called.

    • @RollercoasterDavid
      @RollercoasterDavid  4 месяца назад

      To me they're pretty much the same restraint as on the Mack mega coasters, just with a slightly different closing method and being back to back,

    I agree with your takes here. Can't beat the B&M clamshells. I'd probably drop the Mack to B tier just because of the silly seats wrapping around your shoulders and restricting side movement. New gen Intamin multi launchers, in A tier.

    • @RollercoasterDavid
      @RollercoasterDavid  4 месяца назад

      agree, but for me volicocoaster drops a tier due to the headrests being so bulky and restricting your view

    My Rankings
    1 Buzz Bars
    2 T Bars
    3 Intamin New Age Restraints
    4 RMC Restraints (I never got why everyone hates these I'm 6'2 and I have no problems with them they are heavy but that only slows down dispatches)
    5 Clamshells
    6 Timberliners
    7 Phantom's Revenge Restraints
    8 Morgan Lap bars
    9 Givanola hyper restraints (their perfect for feeling all the airtime this coaster has to off...... Oh wait)
    10 PTC lapbars (just like RMC Restraints for me)
    11 Premier Rides Lapbars (the ones found on full throttle the skyrocket 2s icebreaker etc: they are basically just clamshells)
    12 B&M OSTRs (bad in concept but B&Ms are smooth on firebird or kraken in the back row they probably would rank below SLC restraints though)
    13 Intamin Hard Restraints (no where as bad as peoplesay)
    14 Intamin Soft Strap
    15 Lightning Run's Restraints (basically RMC Restraints but you can get stapled pretty bad that usually isn't a possibility on RMC trains)
    16 Mack Lap Bars (these are comfortable but they can staple you extremely badly that's a huge deal breaker for me)
    17 S&S Freespin Restraints
    18 Vests (I think they're a bit better than people say they are but still pretty bad)
    19 Vekoma Family Coaster Restraints
    20 Motorbike Restraints (specifically on tron)
    21 SLC OSTRs
    22 Zacspin Restraints (my nickname for it is."the ball crusher")

    While I might not put RMC's restraints on D tier, simply because they are lapbars, which puts them above essentially any OTSR... I do think they get an unreasonable pass because of the high quality of these coasters. A lot of enthusiasts bag on Superman: The Ride's U-bricks when they're really not that different from RMC's restraints, as you can tell by walking several hundred feet and riding Wicked Cyclone.

    Call me in the minority, but I think that the restraint system is just as important as any other ride element.
    If not for the over-the-shoulder restraint system used on the Hulk, I might never have had the confidence to even go on an inverting roller coaster, and might never have become a ride enthusiast. Now I can count the Skyscraper and Slingshot family as some of the rides I've been on.
    I find it interesting how different manufacturers and ride designs use different restraints, and often times, how a restraint system looks can intrigue me, and make me want to go on a ride even more. Examples of this includes the X2's vest restraint, Gravity Works x-harness (used on their Ejection Seat and Skyscraper), and Entamin's over-the-shoulder restraint (at least the ones with the added padding).
    The ideal restraint system keeps you secure in your seat, while also somehow conforming over your body. Big bulky plastic models need not apply. A pity that most people don't know how to fasten a five-point-harness.
    Also, glad I'm not the only one who felt that Premier Ride's Ice Breaker is a pain in the ass to get in and out of. And while I get the appeal of a harness-like OTSR, there have got to be better and more comfortable ways to design and easy-to-buckle harness than the design that they used.

    • @RollercoasterDavid
      @RollercoasterDavid  4 месяца назад +1

      Interestingly, I one saw an amputee loading on to a b&M hyper abs they had a kind of five point harness that clipped in to back of the seats.

    • @assemblyrequired7342
      @assemblyrequired7342 4 месяца назад

      @@RollercoasterDavid I can't think of a better restraint system for an amputee. Kudos on B&M and the park that the ride was stationed at for keeping that around as an option, so guests of that nature have a chance to ride.

      @RollercoasterDavid  4 месяца назад +1

      It was actually at six flags over georgia and it wasn't the smoothest operation! I think the amputee knew that the harness was available but it took a while to find the correct stafft hat knew how to fit it!@@assemblyrequired7342
