Why Turbo 4.3L V6!?! Just LS Swap it!!!!

- Welcome to the introduction of my RUclips Channel!
I plan on posting lots of information about the process of building my 2003 GMC Sonoma into a street/strip vehicle.
The truck came with a completely stock 4.3L V6 engine, 4L60E transmission, and a drum brake 7.5" 10 bolt rear axle. I bought it with 122k miles
It came already modified with a Garrett GT3582R turbo and custom turbo kit already installed and running. It had a custom 3" stainless exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler. The engine was modified with an intake manifold that was mean't for marine applications (boats) to be able to upgrade the injectors from the standard spider injection. This manifold was installed with 42lb/hr (green giant) injectors.
The suspension was also modified all around. It had Belltech 2" drop spindles along with 3" drop springs in the front and Caltrac split mono leaf springs and Caltrac traction bars.
I have a handful of parts to upgrade the truck, and plenty of ideas for more upgrades in the future. I hope you all will subscribe to follow along with the progress of the build.
Thanks!
Glad to see a v6 build. It's a major inspiration for alot of people who have a low budget away from the LS swapping.
It was not built it was bought!!!
@@kennithchapman9689 you seem pretty upset are you okay?
It Cost more than a ls swap...if your broke work on your career rathaer than your truck
@@haroldstacy3785 don't understand your comment
LS swapping wouldn’t be too much more considering you are ok boosting stock LS in front of a stock transmission. If you want built on either end yes I agree with you the budget jumps significantly.
I am building a 4.3L NA race blazer. I am glad you kept the turbo v6.
I'm getting parts together for a 2004 S10 Blazer for an off road build. 4.3 pretty much stock with Dana 60's front and back with a turbo 400 Trans and a twin sticked 205. It will be on 38's for now since I have them already.
@@OldGriz708 look for me at King of the Hammers 2022
I’m building a Blazer myself with the 4.3.
How the build going???
It's too easy for people to just build whatever everyone else's flavor of the month happens to be, but it takes heart to build whatever the heck you feel like building. From what you described about the S10, sounds like the previous owner is a creative, practical car guy who knows what he's doing. You know people be doing some off the wall sh1t on their cars sometimes. Nice find. Looking forward to watching your other vids.
Yup! Better to be unique than just another parrot. I cant wait to start on my swap. Going to trigger a lot of people 🤣 ive even nicknamed my sonoma "trigger"
Love that you took this truck in and expanding on its awesomeness
Hey man just stopped in to say love the turbo v6. Got one myself that goes mid 7s in the 1/8th.
These 4.3's sound so good. Stock, turbo, charged etc.
Nice build bro,Im gonna build up a 4.3l with a rear turbo, forged pistons, balanced with a ford 8.8 lsp rear .these 4.3l are underrated
You totaly lost my interest in your build when you said Ford rear end.
All you need is a Moser rear end. Better in every way then a Ford rear end.
I had 04 stock s10 and it could eat 5.0 mustangs all day long
@@Chris-re6wv ain't no way unless you beat the driver. An old 5.0 will shit on a 4.3 s10 with a good driver behind the wheel in a car that isn't running on 6 or 7 of its 8 cylinders or something else causing it to loose power or performance. I could see a well driven 5 speed 4.3 in a stripper short bed reg cab 2wd s10 maybe keeping up a little but it is Def gonna loose stock for stock without a doubt equal drivers all things equal.
@@extremedrivr yea but thr 8.8 is stout and alot "cheaper" right thought you gm guys were all about being cheap lol
The 4.3 v6’s are also good motors. The 4.3 v6 in that truck is the 350 v8 based one which is the better one. More reliable
Best upgrade I ever did on a rwd s10 was doing a 4x4 chassis swap and then swapping the 4x4 components to the syclone's awd system. I highly recommend that you consider it for the insane traction value proposition.
Is there that big of a difference between the 2wd and 4wd chassis?
@@shawnbrownfield9857 Yes, all the 4x4 front end components fit tightly together in a relatively small space. The RWD chassis uses a completely different front.
@@whitewalls8778 I get that, but the frame itself...is it different, as in is the 4wd frame fully boxed?thicker steel?more bracing?
Yeah but RWD is the Drag Racers way!!
@@extremedrivr w/ awd you don't need a prepped track surface- you can launch hard anytime/ anywhere.
Nice truck. I ran my old 97 SS on a 150 Shot of NOS. Was a fun truck.
NICE! We have a 4.3 V6 build in process too, look forward to learning from what you experienced using this motor.
I'm gonna be rebuilding my 4.3 for daily driving but I want it to have a little more balls than it did before
Love it, my 03 ZR2 S10 rear mount turbo with decapped spider injection but even with that i am maxed out on fuel system without even going E85
The weight of the marine intake does not disadvantage it compared to the crappy stock manifold with the spider setup. The benefits of having the marine intake are by far better regardless of its weight. 50 pounds won't make a difference to how fast a 4.3 will go
Happy to finally see a vid of this thing! Happy to be following along!
I had a 99 Sonoma with a LT1 swap about 20 years ago. It was lowered in the rear and air ride in the front. Wish I would've kept that truck. Can't wait for more content.
Saw ya on FWF. Subscribed and learning. I have loved the 4.3 for years and am looking forward to learning about putting a turbo on them. Very cool. Long live the 3/4 350!!!!! 😂
Awesome! Thank you!
A proper way to ring in the new year. Great video! Looking forward to following along.
Hell yes! I am collecting parts to turbo mine. I would love more pics/info on the marine swap. I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. Was really hoping to find a already converted 2114 manifold
i need to find a marine manifold, im looking to turbo mine, and i dont have enough money to blow on a edelbrock intake, or the skill to chop one in half
glad to find this build, keep the content rolling
I quickly ran into “the boat manifold” problem as well. Going to 5.3 swap it. Rumor has it that they get 36mpg and are too much fun. My stock 4.3 motor is mint though. 255k miles and not even a lifter tick. I have a problem throwing away a good engine. Even though it’s worthless to swap into another vehicle with that mileage. Pro Tip for S-10/15’s Remove the butterfly valve and cut off the restriction plate. And reinstall it. Major improvement in take off speed. But good luck leaving the stop light in the rain. It will eventually stop spinning.
36 mpg my ass lol. A vette might get 28 highway or something because of its tall od and sleek aero but I can tell you an s10 with a 5.3 ls isn't gonna gear anywhere near 36 mpg in any kind of conditions ever on any road. Not happening.
@@midnight347 im pretty sure you can get those kind of mpg's if you know what you're doing.
@@davidhazel36 The 4.8 LS is also an option and no one cares about them because everyone wants 6.0s and some 5.3s. For a daily driver that's not thirsty a 4.8 would be a solid choice and they're cheap.
Yessir! Excited to see this truck in detail! Great video!
These a cracking little engines from Chevy/gm
Make great budget build hotrod, restomod engines too.
A 6.0l ls 2500 /3500 express/Savana work van running/driving for less than 1000, that's a win, that van can easily make back it's value within a week. For someone who does trade or hauling work
Not sure if I asked this before. I have bought a 1998 olds bravada. I bought it because I want to turbo the 4.3 in it. Make a nice more modern typhoon. I don't have a welder or any really big nice tools that I need at the moment. They make a cheap chinease turbo kit for around 700 bucks. I plan to do that and also the mercruiser manifold. I'm having a really hard time finding information and parts. I will upgrade stuff later but for now that will be my starting point. I don't want to remove my fender liners and don't want to change a bunch of stuff. I found a nicer set up thru cx racing but I have to remove the fender liners and change out my brake booster. I don't want to do all of that. This is my first turbo build ever. I have no idea about the computer, how to fool with it. I am not sure if I have to change the fuel pump with the mercruiser intake. This is a learn as i go type of build. I know nothing about turbos or waste gates or anything. I'm green when it comes to turbos but I am determined to learn and to make it happen. Any help would be appreciated. I have watched nearly all ur videos but I still have unanswered questions. I have also heard that the turbo kits that the manifold for the turbo won't clear the alternator. These are things I'm trying to find out before ordering. Thanks for any help.
I like the 4.3 turbo idea. Especially if you gotta sit at alot of stop lights and gas prices are high as fk.
Wonderful work. Thank you for sharing this!
The 2 step sounds surprising good
I see the cooling systems been upgraded 🤣
Hell yeah man. Been following you on the gram fo eva. Love the build! Wish I kept going on my 4.3 build:(
Love the truck I have a 96 4.3 Sonoma that I'm wanting to Turbo myself my goal is 600hp. I would love to hear more about your specific build or possibly ask some questions about it to get an idea of how to do it myself.
Keep the videos coming man Definitely could make it as a big RUclips
Man the sonoma hood is way way better looking than the s10 hood
Just finished my 2015 4.3 turbo / nitrous :)
Man thank so much for making this. I have a 93 1500 with the 4.3 v6. And I would love to know how to do the same thing to it.
I'm putting a centrifugal small block supercharger and vortec turbo on my 87 el camino 4.3 v6 to get 600+hp ohh boy I can't wait 🚀🚀🚀
You have no idea what your talking about
Hello love the video, been wanting the same truck forever finally got on last August 2020. I'm going to be following you from now on. I want to the following your lead to see what you go though to mirror your build. Thanks Tom
I have a 1/2 ton obs with a six in it been really thinking of turbos.
Such a cool idea
I feel ya, love it.
Elderbrock has a intake manifold aluminum and I’m running FAST standalone
If you’re still looking for your EFI fix, go with the Edelbrock aluminum 4bbl intake, CSU blow-through carburetor for the turbo, electric fuel pump. Done. Look up Richard Holdener here on RUclips. He got around 450 easy hp with his little 4.3 and a centrifugal.
What's up bro Nice you working on a V6 motor I have a Blazer extreme 2004 I'm located in Florida where you from
I'd love to do a Turbo or Supercharger on my 1995 S10 4.3 TBI/5 Speed
Nice use for the preacher
Nice. Intake patient.
I like the 4.3
I’m going to assume it’s on HP tuners ?
So basically add the boat intake manifold and slap a set of injectors
Your best move was taking those white “racing stripes” off.
I'm doimg a build with an old cup car chevy v-6 306,9 cid nitrous set up with 18 degree heads. Did a 4,3 stock block NA that ran the quarter @ 12,04 and 110 mph and a 8.0 1/8th years ago foot brake @ 3100 lbs.
You don’t need a LS engine if you just wanna have fun with the 4.3 liter V6 engine even Turbocharged
For y’all who don’t know … the 4.3 in these Sonoma’s and S10s are a V8 with 2 cylinders knocked off. Iron horse
It’s a 350 with 2 cylinders chopped off pretty much. Reliable as hell. Why not keep the same heart in her
You are working with the vortec? I think you wouldn't have as hard a time if you were working with the tbi
Im up all night thinking about how grandma past me in my 4.3 s10 flippin the bird as she goes round well after this video granny bring it
If you get bored you should put a overhead console in
Wanting to see this but with the newer lv3 4.3 with a turbo build in a s10 looking for a donar truck wrecked auctions where I'm looking gonna have to swap a bunch of stuff for it to work as the 92 s10 I want to do it in doesn't have any of the electronics on it lol (300k tired 2.8 60° v6) been a pain to find info on the swap also the dod and afm needing to be deleted as they are the main weakness of the motor and if you upgrade the cam too much you have to disable the vvt system as well (do have stage 1 vvt cams) but if you want 360ish hp and close to the same torque all motor stage 2 cam also wanting to do it awd so would need a 4wd v6 truck to then swap the transfer case to a awd unit.
Would like to boost my Jimmy. Nothing crazy, just want it to have a little muscle to it
I need that van 6.0 plus a 4l80e good god. 😳
Hey I got a few guys that are interested in doing a turbo on the 4.3 as I am building a nitrous one in my silverado I'm pretty curious about the turbo set up my self we will see how it goes dope truck by the way
Do it!
Ive got an 02 blazer 4x4, really want to do an ls swap but i keep reading that its a nightmare. I dont want crazy power, just some more go and keep my 4x4....maybe i need this
I have to say man is the video is awesome but I saw that you had a leak in front of your front tire and I was either your blow up on your turbo or else it was a leak because it looks like flames shooting out right out of your exhaust not otherwise love the video bye
Wastegate shot a flame
How did you do the 2 step setup? Can you make a video on it?
My 98 SS obviously had one
Bro your work looks great you opened that chest and I fell in love haha good job, keep uploading videos, greetings from Mexico
Gmc safari transfer case and front diff. Make it all wheel drive
Planning on doing the same turbo kit for my 03 xtreme s10
Interested in the specs of the turbo 4.3 have you put it on the dyno. Maybe 1/4 ETs
Nice Bro I live in the Hudson Vally of New York. I found a Nice very little rust GMC Safari 03 AWD. I want to do something to it.
I need this whole kit except for the fab work! Send me a link
I'm building a turbo 92 s10 blazer 2door 4x4 5speed and I'm going non balance shaft engine but I am going carburetor and doing a blow through setup
You can upgrade the fuel pump and add 350 injection 💉 and pistons
Brandon where have you been I haven't seen anything of you. Just wondering how the Firebird is coming along. Anyway hope your doing well thanks Ray
What's been done to engine or is it stock?
Hmm might need to try on my square body s10
I have 95 4.3 vortec 53 chevy body. What can i do to make nice power and how hard would a turbo install be. Nice video bro love the big motors but also love smokin someone with a little sleeper motor
Camshaft and valve springs would be the easiest way. A turbo would not be easy.
@@turbov6 thanks. Im about to replace the spider injectors anything you recommend on that like is there a better upgrade
Can’t wait for more information,
What sort of MPG you get in this with the turbo?
I want to know where that core support came from! 😮🤤
I made it
Is it aluminum? Looks simple and straightforward. Only has what needs to be there in mind
@@ChickenJoe24 yeah 1”x1” aluminum square tubing
That's awesome. #builtnotbought
How hard was it to determine all the factory mounting points for the grille and headlights? Great job btw
@@ChickenJoe24 it wasn’t easy. Mostly just a lot of time mocking everything up to make sure it fit.
Turbos turbos turbos!
What do you have in it for a rear end pretty much doing the same thing to my truck and not finding much about what would fit in it for an LSD
How much did you pay for the truck when you purchased the truck?
Would really appreciate it if you went into more detail on the intake manifold and where to find it
eBay 4.3l marine intake
I’m getting an 86 Monte Carlo LS with the 4.3 EFI V6. Is this the same core motor?
Ya but it a 130 hp peace of leaking junk. My 85 monte had the same engine now she has a 6.0 and 4l80 with 28 mpg plus over 500 hp no turbo needed. 😉
After you got off 2step it sounds like it was down a couple cylinders for a few seconds
I have a xtreme Blazer 4.3 turbo what you recommend me have stuck intake
Get a carburetor intake for it and then use Holley sniper Efi
Already have parts that I’ll be upgrading to. Also staying with the stock PCM for now.
It sounds so good 😍😍😈👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Nice truck what kinda of bed cover is that?
I recently got a Chevy s10 with a 4.3l v6 what's something I should do first to it to increase power?
Cam and tune
Sorry if you said it and I missed it, but how are you tuning? Megasquirt? Speeduino?
I’m running the stock pcm and tuning with TunerPro
they make race 4.3 parts.
Do you have e a FB also?? Thanks love the truck.
I know it shouldn't apply here buy whats the MPG like? Might do this do a Standard s10 for daily.
Quit keeping track because it was terrible lol. Maybe 10mpg
my stock '03 s10 maybe gives me 18 highway/13 city, its a work truck though so there is at least 500 lbs in the bed any given day.
Anti lag?
it is always "cooler" to modify the original engine than to engine swap anything. i'm glad you didn't LS swap it. LS's are SO boring. your 4.3 block is capable of pushing twice the hp of a stock truck LS AND you get to keep all of the oem components that were designed by top level engineers to work together. you only need to change individual failure prone parts instead of hacking up everything and losing durability. good choice of a vehicle with much potential and not copying every other build.
4.3 Turbos were common in the Typhoon/Syclone. I'd be curious to know there differences, were they cammed, different pistons, rods, crank, etc? Do you know?
They only made like 3000 of those of some shit so common is a word i wouldnt use with those lol...but yes they came stock with a 4.3 turbo and was awd
Would love to know how you got it to 2 step!?
Custom modifications to the stock PCM. I used an N2MB WOT Box in the past.
So i didnt read threw the coments. Way too many. But not only was flames com8ng from pipes but why the front too while reving to limiter
Wastegate dump
Can I ask what are the specs on the whole truck I wanna do the exact build, because I’m about to pull my stock 4.3 with a nv3500 behind it and I wanna put a turbo ect.
