It could be an ego statement with context, the following comes to mind. I'm not a real doctor, even though I have all the documents, qualifications and experience for doctor because a patient died on me yesterday and I'm an utter failure unlike Josh who's a genius doctor who's never had a patient die on him. Even though yesterday's surgery had 0.001% of success I could never operate again, it's all my fault and you should get a real doctor like Josh to do it.

timely reminder- I'm a recovering expert stuffer and I still have to pay attention to when I think I'm not feeling emotion and am in "logic" mind. Wildest thing therapy taught me was all those times I thought I was being logical and emotionless were high emotion, low awareness ones. When I am in what feels like a "pure" logical state I'm being driven by intense emotions that have shorted out the sensors for them. Learning core defaults helped too- ie I default to fear of worthlessness and abandonment which generally pushes me towards self sacrifice (in an unhealthy manner) or leaving first.

I'm autistic, I had to really learn how to become aware of my emotions so I could control my behaviour but also understand my limits. Most of the time, I'm emotionally stable now, so I'm no longer affected by my triggers in devastating ways and it no longer undermines my rational thought (though there are a few slip ups here and there, but luckily my support system knows when to reality check me out of this, and that I need a damn nap).
A big part of my equilibrium that has saved me has actually been to accept that there are certain things I want to be able to do, but cannot, due to the way my brain works. I work maximum between 8 - 12 hours a month, if I do more than that, the stress makes me be so uncomfortably aware of my frontal lobe and I risk dissociation and psychotic breaks. I've had psychotic breaks for over a decade in my teens because I kept chugging on and couldn't/didn't take the breaks my brain was begging for.
But I can work now. I can work out, I can socialise, I can live alone, I can take care of my cats, I can take care of myself, I manage my finances, I can help others with their own self-management. Things I can only with self-awareness and under the condition of limiting and boundaries.
If that means, by this logic, that my logic is flawed, then oh well, let my logic be flawed. I'm finally living a fulfilling, stable life.

This speaks to me so damn much. I have autism too and I have SUCH a hard time identifying and being aware of my emotions, when I really fuckin need to because it affects the things I do.
I’m also the same about work, I get burned out and riddled with anxiety so unimaginably fast and I have always told myself to just get over that or something? I’m really happy to learn I’m not alone with that struggle.
I live in an apartment by myself, but my mom comes over every single day (she lives literally 2 minutes away so she doesn’t mind) and helps me with most of my life. I feel way too dependent and it’s kind of scary, but I don’t know how to manage myself yet. I’ve started going back to therapy, so hopefully I can work on that issue 😰

I totally am with you here on the emotions being active but suppressed. I'm not sure how expressing limits is a form of ego. People have limits. I have limits. I started getting healthier once I started accepting them and not criticizing myself for my limitations. They aren't bad. In fact they are a great guide for life in a lot of ways. I wish I had been much more aware of my limits and accepting of them and myself in my early 20's. I would have made radically different choices. Now I am living a life almost pushed beyond what I can handle on the daily, but to raise my family its the life I have. Choices can have 20 year consequences.

    • @NLTops
      @NLTops 5 месяцев назад +1

I don't understand what his problem with ego is. It's perfectly normal to separate yourself from the world around you and to have a sense and understanding of self. I can't fly like a bird because I don't have wings or the right bone density. There's nothing flawed about that logic.
But it's important to understand you are not static. So making definitive determinations about yourself is a pitfall. You are now what you are now.
How you saw yourself 5 years ago is different than how you see yourself today. It is also different from how you see the you from 5 years ago today. We walk the path of our life, half with purpose, half wandering. And as we move along that path our perspective changes and we change.
Ten years ago you may never have anticipated to become capable of the things you are today. If you had made different choices, you may never have become capable of them. Or maybe you expected to grow way more in some respects, and you might have if you had made different choices.
But you can't retrace your steps and take another path. At best you can change direction now... still half with a purpose, half wandering... and see where you end up. But I have a feeling you like your limits. They work for you.

      @ghostratsarah Год назад +64

Case by case. You likely set aside your flawed logic to come to the conclusion that you have severe limitations. That is healthy, to accept what you can not do. It's when you use superficial limitations as an excuse to not try things that you very well could do. For example, someone who is able bodied and neurotypical saying they cannot get a job because they didn't graduate highschool and don'thave a drivers license. They could very easily lay out a game plan to get there, the hurdles in their way are easily overcomable, it just takes some patience and elbow grease. Yet they blame the fact that they didn't put in the effort before, so they don't have to put in the effort now.
That is very different from someone with disabilities who has done their best and has found where the lines need to be drawn. The hardest part for people with disabilities is often allowing ourselves to draw those lines, because we are scared of being the previously mentioned case study.

To function in a society is to internalize the dominant rationalizations and to be perfectly rational is to not have said automatic rationalizations making you underperform.
If you want to be rational and without emotion, you first need to understand all the implicit moral and ethical compromises that society will impose on you and then make your own conscious reasoning of which to follow and which not to.
It would be easier to just follow society's own assumptions and then slowly digest each one that is important to you and decide whether to follow it in the future or go against it.

I feel emotions and am aware of them, but any frustration, anger or sadness only lasts for a few minutes and then I forget about it and move on
And for things that makes me really angry or sad I get bursts of anger or sadness when I think about it
I've always found this strange considering the norm seem to be holding onto your feelings for way longer
Positive emotions seem to stay at least
For the ego part, Idk, I still catch myself almost relating something to something that has happened to me and stop myself, but it doesn't happen very often, or maybe I'm obnoxious and unaware of it 😂

As someone who studies stoicism this is correct. I find I'm right a lot of the time because I don't tie who I am to what I'm saying. I look at the bigger picture and imagine how someone else feels given a percieved problem. Its only when I go "how they feel is not my problem" that I divert attention back onto myself. Now their feelings about how they feel internally doesn't matter anymore because Im in the process of ignoring them. Which is a negative emotion. Therefore my response would be negative to their percieved problem. Even in my imaginative state of hallucinating their emotions, it would show that I'm empathizing with them because my response would be indicative that I actually am directing myself at how they might feel. That really tied something together for me there... the way that was said was amazing.

@eater_of_garbage_ No I've read beyond good and bad by Fredrick Nietzsche, I've read Discourses by Epictetus, I've read Plato's work, including his symposium, I've read the Illiad by Homer, I've read George Orwell's work, I've written my own philosophy.
Excuse my edited texts. That was for an unrelated video. What exactly was the point of you commenting that though? Are you mentally ill? Are you seeking some sort of validation? I don't really understand you needing to be rude to someone who says he does something. You absolutely have no reason not to trust that I've done what I've said, you've never met me. Nor will you ever.
If that's the kind of interactions you have with people who you walk by on the street then I'm sure that I don't really want to get to know you. Even though I've answered your question I don't believe you really think before you speak, and I don't think you care about yourself enough to interact with people appropriately. So with that being said I'm not gonna respond to whatever you say next.
I'm someone who reads for fun, do you think that hopping online and responding to my comment with some stupid remark like that shows you're better than me in any way? I also believe I wasn't speaking to you. In the belief of stoicism it's actually encouraged to check arrogant people which you so happen to be.
I also have a Mensa score of 121 and was a Paralegal Specialist for the military. Do you really think I'm that dumb? You speak to me like we're close friends, I don't believe you really have the right to judge me about anything. Nor tell me who I am or will be. I without a doubt know whatever comes of this interaction, you pay for it in the future.

There is nothing unhealthy about telling yourself something like "I need to improve because I'm not meeting my own goals" or even telling yourself harsh truths like "I am being lazy/selfish/inattentive/etc." I would even argue that forming those thoughts and coming to those conclusions is a big part of taking steps toward change.

The way I think of it is your always feeling something. If you feel nothing its because your ignoring or are unable to feel your emotions. Only make decisions when you can truly say that you are calm. If you are happy you will downplay the cons of the decision, if you are sad you will downplay the pros, if you are angry youll act irrationally. Only when calm, not happy, sad, or mad, can you make truly intelligent decisions. Thats my take.

    You're not a robot, you're not A.I.
Humans are bound to feel emotions and Ego, just like ID and Super-Ego, are both meant to be felt and experienced.
You're calling emotions flaws because you prone logic is the correct objective way to exist but the matter of fact is that your obsession with that point is also an emotion.
You just demonstrated the flaw of logic. Humans are not bound to be copy-pasta of one another with logic-working minds that cannot have different degrees of emotions.

I have to nit pick just a bit on the framing of the mind being “flawed” and not functioning “properly”because of emotions. If we demonize emotions, then it’s possible to then conclude it is better to have little respect for them. Emotions are natural part of the life experience, and contribute to navigating the world with meaning. They can also indicate important things about how life circumstances are affecting you-like the dashboard tells you important things about the functioning of car. I do agree that it is beneficial and more functional to develop awareness to your emotions to the highest level possible so that they don’t run your life.

Let's say I am in a situation where I need to make a difficult choice, and let's assume I don't feel emotionally controled.
Given how emotions are always around, would it be the right course of action to focus on invoking those feelings present, be able to name them, find their source and intent, and then based on that try to come up with a decision separately, knowing how those emotions want to control me?
TLDR: Deliberately focus on the emotions to know what they exactly are, to then be able to make an independent decision better?
