What is forgotten about the marshmallow experiment is that the kids who ate the marshmallow instead of waiting were already experiencing a lack of resources. I’d like to know how poverty, lack of care, lack of opportunity affected these children’s focus and concentration…
I’m here because I’ve been struggling to fight my urge to get my dream car, I can pay cash for it and it wouldn’t kill me but my long term goal is to buy my first house with cash. I know it’ll be worth the wait but I see that car and it’s really tempting. I’m very good with delayed gratification but this is the one thing I have even come close to considering over the house. Need videos like this to bring me back to earth and focus on my priorities. Thanks
Intermittent fasting (not eating for a day, or eating only once a day) 4-5 days throughout week, exercising 1-2 hours 4-5 days a week, regulating sleep to get at least 6-7 hours of sleep a day ,taking cold showers 3-5 minutes every day. Do this for a year, minimum 80% of the junk going on in your head and body will CLEAR OUT and let you breath (probably for the first time in your life), let you discipline yourself and let you do WHATEVER YOU WANT while having 100% concentration at given tasks.. This is probably a HARD RESET on your own body and mind. It works. Especially if you pile it up all at once. It does start to autopilot ( get some inertia) after few months. Meaning it becomes more easy to do the longer you do it. First you have to push, then it starts pushing you... VERY NICE feeling. Delaying Gratification MINDSET is what you get as a byproduct of this procedure. And it DOES DO everything this man is saying, AND MORE. As a matter of fact, you start LIVING the GRATIFICATION instead of chasing it. ;)
This is something I used to do when I was in school in order to get better grades. I would study during the day and only when I finish my assignments I would either game or hang out with my friends. Since then I stopped doing that which led to a severe drop in my everyday concentration. So definitely thank you for reminding me and everyone else why delaying gratification is so important. For the past few weeks I have stopped gaming, browsing news and social media and since then my concentration has been great. I've done a lot more work than before and I also feel much better about myself. So my advice to everyone is to let these words sink in: Delay instant gratification and try to learn something new every day, no matter how small it is. You WILL feel better and your motivation to continue doing this will only grow stronger.
I was suppose to be finished studying 7 months ago, but I kept delaying from time to time and then 3 months came up. I was either going to crunch it all in for the passed 3 months like I always do, or just keep a slower pace and not force myself. I chose to keep the slower pace. This was because my reading speed at the time was slow. It's sped up now. It was like I had to re-learn how to read effectively and fast. I chose not to CRUNCH be cause it would cause mental stress and possible burn out. Also it was a bad habit I learned from college. Consistency is better than crunch. Adding more hours and speeding through multiple subjects starts to become extremely detrimental. I realized that I should take the materials in like I play games. When I play games, I explore around the whole place and try things. When I get to something hard. I have to re-evaluate my skills and see where I am weak at. Then I train that weak area until I feel like it's good enough and go back and to the difficult section and complete it. I NEVER rush through games. Yet at some point I hit a state of flow when information and actions are at a high state. I realized this is how I truly learn. This is how I learn to enjoy things. Being consistent and being there everyday investing into it. I realized that short times over multiple days is better than large blocks over 2 days because it allows me to think about the subject for a while. I remember taking my time with Witcher 3 for example. I explored everywhere in that game. That was 2015....When I saw the trailers for the next gen upgrade, I knew exactly where the people were in the trailer. This is how I knew this slower path of doing things is the right path. Maybe, me rushing through the stuff was me selling out for the short term rewards....and now taking my time to actually know and explore my software skills means that I am finally delaying my gratification. I could have had A job by the end of the year...but would I have had THE job by the end of the year if I burned through the subjects. I don't think so. My goal is to have a job by the summer now.
It's so hard to stay consistently active and motivated, at least for me. I do a lot of those "crunches" where i study very hard for 3 months, and then have a break from all studying basically, only to slowly start again and suddenly crunch again. The results have been good for me (I study software development) but it would definitely be more healthy mentally and maybe physically to study consistently at a more reasonable pace.
@@KaLaka16 Here's the big tip, even when you don't feel like doing it, you do it. Even if it's for 30 minutes that day. It's better than nothing. You don't have to be perfect when you are learning. You have to simply improve from the last day! Let me give an analogy. I hate exercising. Every day I get up and exercise. I have all of the reasons and excuses not to do it that day. When I start, the first 15 minutes are hell. I ask myself why the hell I am doing it. My body is telling me to go sit back down and do nothing. Then about 20 minutes in, I start feeling good. My body is saying "LETS GET THIS DONE!!" and I finish. I noticed this happened every time I exercised. No matter how much muscles I put on, or how much fat I shred, it still feels hard to start. So now I am aware of this and know to push passed it. The same thing happened to me when I start a new game. Usually I play one MMO (which I am quitting now) and I've played it for years and the controls barely change. When I moved on to another game. I had that same feeling like the exercises. For about 4 days, I played on and off for about an hour. Then the 5th day, I finally had enough knowledge and skill of the game to keep a constant flow going. Obviously, this same thing applied to books. I couldn't even remember what I read the first few days lol. Then after about a week, I finally opened up my mental capacity to read and comprehend books again lol. You need to be aware of this. I call it rust and friction. Rust is when you had a flow of doing something, but you left for a while and now you have to clean the rust off to get the ball rolling again. Friction is when you are learning something new. In physics, you have to apply an initial force that gets passed the friction force. After the ball starts rolling, keeping it moving takes less force. I found that when I really don't want to do anything and procrastinate, I know it's these two things that I am trying to avoid getting through. That feeling of not knowing what the heck I am doing, that feeling that I am wasting time, that feeling like I am not smart. All that. That feeling is NORMAL!!!!!!!! and it's something that we have to get through in order to progress... So even if you don't feel like doing it do it...even if it's for 30 minutes....even if you don't accomplish much.. ETCH THAT TIME OUT AND DO SOMETHING ON THE SUBJECT EVERY DAY!!! you'll notice the next days it will start to become easier. If you can't at minimum put in 30 minutes in a day you really don't feel like doing the subject....you may have to re-evaluate your time usage.
@@RatusMax Nice comment, sounds relatable. Starting is often the most difficult thing. Another problem is getting distracted by all of the possible forms of entertainment available these days. Rust and friction are good words to use for the things you said, maybe I'll start using them :D
