The more films Ridley Scott makes, the more I start to believe any of his successes were a complete fluke.
He is very uneven, he can do terrific movies and terrible movies almost like Star Trek films where every other one is lousy
His earlier movies were no fluke. He was one of the best directors during one of the best times for films.
Scotts downfall isnt that hes always been a fraud. Its that he didnt know when to retire. If you go on for too long, not only do you change beyond recognition the industry does as well.
He is simply to old, weak and lacking in passion and the industry is too dumb, cultish and lacking in passion.
Alien and Blade Runner were not flukes. They were the products of a man in his prime working in an industry in its prime.
Ridley Scott is reverse John Carpenter. Scott is more successful but has made more bad movies than good. Carpenter is less successful but has made more good movies than bad.

I’m wholeheartedly against DEI in movies, especially time pieces where gladiators literally fight to the death, but the first Gladiator did have some bad ass female archers in the first scene in the coliseum. I believe they were called the Barbarian Horde. They were cool. Female warriors can be cool if done properly but odds are they’ll wokeify the female archer in this film.

My friend was a ghost writer for Hans late 90s to 2006. He's got some Wagner in gladiator sound track. He later used elements of gladiator for pirates of the Caribbean. Good times
Everything about this looks like a cheaper, worse version of the first movie. And it's impossible to not make those comparisons considering how good the first movie was and how long there has been since this movie.
Nearly two and a half decades should have been enough to just not bother.

Yet all the "Fantasy Scenarios" & "Fantasy Play" (aka War Games and Sparring) from the Training DO Teach a *great fu©k¡ng deal* about War, Fighting and Survival and actually do make the difference between Dying and Living to Fight another day!
So even if Shad isn't in the greatest of Physical Shape (far from it), AND does not seem to Train his Swordsmanship very rigorously, all of his Knowledge and Experience would still serve him and allow him to fare much better than almost anyone else who'd be put in a real Medieval Duel, as long as they'd be of the same level of fitness as his!

In fact, that was one of Rome's problems. They trained barbarians to eventually be conquered by them. Depending on the character's back story, it's not necessarily a DEI role, even though it checks BlackRock's boxes.

In scott's defense, Rome was extremely diversed and multicultural, they would bring slaves and rich tradesman from all parts of Asia, Europe and Africa, blck people were fairly common in the empire, not only as slaves but also as merchants and dealers
I think people forget that in ancient times, racism and this whole concept of white supremacy wasn’t really a big thing like in current times.
That didn’t happen until the Catholic Church needed a reason to justify conquering other lands and enslaving indigenous people for free.

Part of what people revere most about the original is the soundtrack! The music of Gladiator is an essential part of what made that movie great. People expect the same thing with a sequel

Maximus was a good and honorable man. There is zero chance that Maximus would end up in Hades, the judge would see what he did in life and he'd be in Elysium with his wife and kid.
True, but his revolt also led to several gladiators dying in his name for what was essentially a pointless act, since they were already betrayed. Also, remember that his entire mission was one of REVENGE. Not that the creepy emperor didn't have it coming.
@@sigmacademy revenge, or better described as avenging his family would not be seen as a negative by the judges of the dead. Also, Maximus did not force anyone to fight for his cause. They were inspired by him and fought willingly for their friend.

@@sigmacademy Why would Roman gods care that his mission was for revenge? His wife and child were murdered and then he avenged them. Why would the gods find that dishonorable? He took on an evil emperor, the most powerful man in the world and won. That's pretty bad ass and I'm sure would be a story that would live on for generations. If it were true we would still be talking about it.
