The reason they go to "Breaking Bad" "Game of Thrones" "Sopranos" etc, is because it has to be something made on this side of the Millennium. They have never read a history book, they don't know any classic literature. They probably have no clue who C.S. Lewis, Ernest Hemmingway, or Mark Twain are... This is all that they know. What was already on TV five minutes ago.
"Write what you know" is the golden rule. They don't know anything, ergo, they can't write anything. You read about someone like Harlan Ellison, who, whatever you think of him as a person, was a prolific writer... and he did things in his life. He drove a truck filled with TNT along the interstate, he was in the military. He did a lot, he saw a lot. He met people. He bedded a lot of women. He had stories to tell. He could reach into that deep well and pull stuff out... and he did, right up until he died.

@@troffle When Jackson made LOTR? He studied the books, the scripts were meticulous, and the preproduction was extensive. They also had classic Shakespearean actors playing the roles, one of which knew Tolkien personally.

I met Joseph Mawle in a bar in Copenhagen back when he had appeared in GOT.
I couldn't quite place him so I asked him if he had appeared in anything. He said, "I've done a few theater pieces in London", with an almost self-deprecating tone and demeanour.
It was only a few minutes later still talking to him it dawned on me he was one of my favourite GOT characters.
The man is very very humble and very polite, it saddens me that he became entangled and associated with Rings of Power, he's a damn' fine actor!
He was likely bullshitted to as well but cottoned on PDQ so walked away. Likely has integrity, sadly lacking in many actors today. Tennant I'm looking at you.

Some of these properties getting mutilated by these frankly-criminals helped raise a generation or two of people. I know that I learned things from some of them I would not have learned anywhere else in my childhood.
And then, I see what's become of them. I see people DEFENDING this horror. I see these people PROFITING off this desecration.

I foresee RoP going the exact same road as ST:D to a T. First season being a vanity project that pisses off the fans. Second season tries to fix things but the writers are morons and somehow make it worse. Third season they just throw in the towel and stop pretending that this is a show in the lore of the IP they are apart of. The budget goes lower season after season along with the viewership. And the final season crosses the finish line with a complete whimper.

I liked Peripheral until about episode 6 when they started in on that actual video game level practice thing they did. Was really well written until then, everything had a point and a purpose, good characters. Only bad thing was she still had to be a super duper grll boss that was better at video games than ALL of the male characters... that's just fantasy, not SciFi.

Very first sentence says Galadriel makes short work of this snow-troll. Because a tiny framed female can easily defeat a giant snow troll by herself when a seasoned team of larger men struggled with a smaller troll in actual good versions. Hollywood is lame and gay.
The Tolkien story I remember is that he had received a tax demand from the British Government which he disputed but he understood the futility of fighting the government so he signed the check paying them marked "under protest". On the same day he signed away the movie rights to "Lord of the Rings" to pay the tax debt.
Apparently that's true and it was right before a major takeoff in popularity that had he just waited a little would've seen him earn enough to pay that darn tax bill. In about the mid 70's on if you didn't have a copy of that book most turned their nose up at you. Needless to say I didn't know anyone who if they didn't already have one, didn't rush out and get one. The timing was terrible.

The issue is: if they took some basic writing ideas from Breaking Bad to then translate to a fantasy universe that in itself would not be the most terrible thing. BB was a well written show overall I'd say. (I am talking VERY basic things, like how you write a character, with an arc and motivations, or a story that actually makes sense in how it flows)
But they clearly are not smart enough to do that.
