for several years as primarily a rhythm guitarist I have used these techniques adapted over time from my punk rock origins. about a year ago my church hired a new pastor that used to play in punk bands and so now we're changing styles and we're punkifying all this new worship music. let me tell you, it is a blast! highly recommend trying it sometime. at least where I live and with our community of worshippers, they love it and engage really well.
THAT'S AMAZING! I play rhythm at my church and I grew up listening to Dream Theater and My Chemical Romance and Green Day etc. I never adapted to the worship sound and I hear it all the time..."you rocked out up there! we love it when you play! I can do solos like that too etc..." Of course, it isn't about me at all, yano? I'm just saying. If you play any kind of way, don't be afraid to bring it to the table. God made you a certain way and with a certain musical taste. Not the taste of everyone else in the worship community. Use it. Own that sucker! lol It bothers me when worship isn't a lifestyle anymore but a genre of music. It's about a heart to heart with God, not getting the lead line right or something like that. I'd love to hear what your church is doing! It sounds incredible!! (for the record, I LOVE worship guitar tones. They're crisp and beautiful and there's always a time for them :D) Ok I'm done now haha
Great advice on who to follow, and being an accent as a rhythm guitarist. Way too many rhythm guitarists want to be out in front of the mix because they don't realize their instrument is more about texture than about having every note heard.
Hey Dev! It's Abu. I e-mailed u a couple of months ago if u remember me from Beza International Church in Ethiopia. Awesome video! Those were key points u talked about that really help. God bless you Dev!
You're doing a lot of different things transposing chords, playing inversions, relative chords/substitutes, Riff behind lead guitar an octave higher or lower, Playing one note lines, Octaves and other intervals, it is about how well you know your instrument like in any music genre in general.
So I’ve been playing acoustic forever I have a nice tele but what I don’t like is the ringing through on electric. What are some tips or videos I can watch to overcome that?
If you mean you dont like the high treble or feedback, then you can try turning down the tone knob on the guitar and boosting mids and cutting treble on the amp. A bit of overdrive too (perhaps a tubescreamer) will compress your sound a bit more.
Are you using your guitars original pickups, or have you replaced them? I play a Mexican Stratocaster as well, and I've been debating on whether to save and buy new pickups or just go for an American Stratocaster (or possibly Telecaster). Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance, and also thank you for the video!
Hey man great video. Do you ever have tuning issues using a capo with electric guitar? For me, on a Les Paul at least, slapping a capo on *almost always brings all my strings sharp. I've been using an adjustable capo(Shubb) and it helps, but it's still an issue and not at all as simple as just quickly moving it around. Almost always have to retune, and theres not much time for that between songs. I try to have both my guitars with me, one with a capo already tuned up, and one without. Any tips? BTW, I use 10s on both my Les Paul and Strat.
+NICKHAM16 what does intonation have to do with a capo causing strings to go sharp? The guitar has been intonated and set to my exact action preference and I use locking tuners. I'm not having "tuning issues" my friend.
Make sure you're using an electric guitar capo. An acoustic guitar capo will put too much pressure on the strings, causing it to sharpen. One of the adjustable tensions capos would be your best bet to avoid tuning issues.
Is it really a choice of playing everything in power chords or using a capo? ...May be a matter of personal taste, but I really dislike the sound of a guitar playing every song in the "open G shape technique" see 03:00 Especially if the capo goes up beyond the 3rd fret. As a guitar player, I find the capo to be extremely limiting... I won't give up half of my guitar in order to play everything in key of G of C. Plus, abusing the capo will stomp your development as a guitar player. There are better ways to fill up those spaces, just takes more practice.
No. Guitars sound best when playing open, it’s the physics of the instrument and the intervals between strings. Capoing to E will always sound better than playing in F#
Nah. It's kind of obvious....he does know his open chords. Two guitars, one with a capo, one without makes a huge sound. When changing keys, it can preserve the inversion structure as well. Ignoring a capo is short-sighted at best.
Delay and reverb are not adding a "pad effect" to what we're playing, nor is it there to cover the space while changing chords. We hear sounds daily that come from somewhere - some space. We (people) enjoy the sounds that mimic those spaces. Recording guitar in a cave would make it sound like your guitar might occupy the space on the cave. Delays and reverbs do just that - they place your instrument somewhere and make it sound as though it comes from someplace natural. I beg you, please spend a few more years playing and learning before making another video.
A pad in most worship is literally just an open airy and reverby sound using full chords. Meaning to replicate that on guitar you add reverb and delay...Dont be so pretentious.

Thank You : You and Yours be more blessed.
Would like to see a video like this for when you're playing in a really crowded mix and DON'T want a really full guitar sound.
Punk goes worship. Hahahaha. This is my entire life.
I’m metal goes worship! I like to play both. They balance each other out for me so I don’t get bored with anything
I like tot think I’m still playing Rock just disguised as worship music....
Very good video. I really like your techniques for playing rhythm guitar with open chords!

PLEASE MAKE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!!!
Super helpful and very good attitude and presentation. Respect brother!
I'm glad I'm not the only one to use a capo and just transpose
Really helpful.. I like your overdrive sound..
Thank You be blessed more You and Yours.
Awesome video
Awesome vid, Devin! transposition is one of the hardest things to do musically but once you get it down you can master just about anything!
I use capo 2 for key of E with D form chords. Same thing for F on capo 3 and F# on capo 4.
Great stuff!!
How do you stay out of the sonic space of the acoustic guitar who is probably using the same open chords/capo? What differentiates you enough?
Timbre. But in worship music, multiple instruments also fill the same sonic space as others. It's what creates the big wall of sound in worship music.
EQ, strumming pattern (quarter notes, etc.), which strings you are accenting, etc.

Excellent!
Great share and Thanks for your sharing God Bless
great video
Bro you've got some serious tones
So weird coming across this video. Pretty sure I saw Devin 10 years ago at a Winter Retreat in VA while he was playing for the band Exodus
I’m very proud of ya!
Excelente video!!
We need a new chart 😅
Clicked the link to capo transposition. I think it’s broken or no longer active.
I have a GX14 ZOOM. What effects should I use for praise and worship?
Thanks man, this was super helpful.
Great video!!
+David Dawson thank you for watching!

What pickups do you have in that strat? They sound great!
Late reply, but those look like single coils
What matchless amp are you using?
Great videos these. ty
Genial. Bendiciones sigan subiendo mas videos
Anyone know who makes that capo?
What PickUps are you using on your strat?
This was helpful.

thanks for watching! Those are original pickups. check out lollars or seymour duncan!

Put the capo as close as possible to the fret to limit how much of the string is press down as possible. Should help a little.
I'm doing that already, still just hate using a capo unless I have a second guitar with me. Thanks brotha!
+Sean Hebert Get your guitar properly set-up and intonated and you will not have tuning issues.
+NICKHAM16 what does intonation have to do with a capo causing strings to go sharp? The guitar has been intonated and set to my exact action preference and I use locking tuners. I'm not having "tuning issues" my friend.

I've heard slight overdrive beside reverb and delay.
Is your drive here...from the amp? Or are you using a pedal?
Your link isn’t working sadly
Excelent!
Your strat sounds wicked. What gear are you using? Pickups? How is your tremolo setup?
Qual pedal você usa
Devin, in your signal chain, which is first-- reverb or delay?
I'm not sure what he does for his chain, but delay is almost always before reverb.
I need to know the name of the intro song please!! thank you!!!
aluizio540 did you find out the name of the song?
What kind of distortion it was? The whole playing was beautiful :)
I think it was the Walrus Audio Voyager. Not positive though.
I'm sorry, I think it's the Walrus Audio Mayflower.
cool

Well said.
Nothing says 2016 non denominational like pallet background
thnks for the vid
Good stuff, but you brought up music theory to learn to transpose, wouldn't music theory also teach to play without a capo ?
No. Guitars sound best when playing open, it’s the physics of the instrument and the intervals between strings. Capoing to E will always sound better than playing in F#
Like it!
Is that a Fender American Standard Strat with the fat 50s pickups?
Those sound much chunkier than the fat 50s to me.
It's a Mexican Strat with stock pickups.
Sounds too muddy for me…at least what I’m hearing in this video through my iPhone.
Everybody! Special announcement about a page update!!!

I don't use capo. I always lost them. Please use less capo
Does this work for a satan worshiping band?
cunt666 of course it can. Also for all those feet, tree, and dirt worshipers :)
To much talking,
Capos suck. learn your open chords
