I was thinking the same thing, at the very least took inspiration. But I bet the engineers were real annoyed with having to run the wires and connectors all into that area.

@michael wittmann I am a but confused in this matter. It is a car construction from Sweden made by the people in that country with parts from the Swedish factory. But the company is owned by Geely. Are Jaguar, Aston, The Mini, Rolls and Bentley Brits?

So, the Since 1959 thing. I asked the dealer about it when I bought a volvo a few years ago.
In 1959 volvo invented the seat belt and instead of patenting it and keeping it for them self's they decided to let all other auto makers use their design for free to save more lives. The 'Since 1959' refers to that.
Volvo was founded somewhere in the 1920s or 30s

Volvo invented the 3 point seatbelt design in1959. Thats the reason for "since1959" text. In fact they decided not to patent it and let other carmakers use it too as it was so safe.

I agree with a lot of Doug’s opinions, but I think he’s totally wrong in saying that the Polestar 1 should have been an SUV. A coupe (or even a sedan or wagon for that matter) makes for a much more compelling flagship car than an SUV. The lower, lighter car with a lower center of gravity means better acceleration and handling and sleeker, better looking design, not to mention slightly more aerodynamic and therefore better efficiency and range (every mile of electric range counts for plug-in buyers)
If it were a high volume model, he’d be absolutely right, but that’s what the Polestar 2 and other future models will be. The Polestar 1 was them putting their best foot forward on a desirable, low volume flagship model to draw attention to the brand. Even if SUVs are taking over the sales market, cars (especially coupes) will always have a performance edge and tend to be “cooler” and more desirable, especially when it comes to performance and flagship models (plus the more common SUVs become, the more cars will stand out)
Just like the flagship models of Bentley, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce etc... are not their SUV's.
Yeah the flagship car should always be a car imo. Even for brands like Mercedes, they may sell more SUVs but most people consider the S class the flagship.

Amazing quirk
In keeping with Volvo's obsession with safety, that glass window in the truck is also so firefighters responding to an accident can quickly find the master disconnect for the electrical system. It's right there, in the center. They can just pry open the trunk, smash the glass and pull the disconnect.
Volvo usually puts since 1959 on their seatbelts because that is the year that they invented the 3 point safety belt.
Doug: it does 0-60 I'm 3.7 seconds (intro)
Also Doug: it does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds (Doug score)
It’s tested at 3.7 s on C&D. 4.2 seconds is the time with a not full battery, no brake torquing and ESP on. I know it because I actually did a run at 3.87 seconds to 100 km/h, with all ideal conditions met.
Even 3.7 seems very slow considering its a hybrid with 600hp.... 3.0 flat should be the target for that. IMHO
Ian F It weighs 2.358 tons...it’s not going to be 3 seconds fast. However you say that but in the quarter mile, it actually out speeds cars in the low 3’s, like the Conti GT or the M4 GTS. It has a very « on/off » acceleration.
The electric motors are geared for higher speeds because of their low redline (single speed) so once you’re above 50 km/h it just rockets it’s way up to 155. It’s a tad faster from 50 to any speed than the Conti GT.
Keep in mind it’s a GT, not a Porsche 911 Turbo killer.

I think the manufacture listed time is 4.2 even though many have tested lower than that.

I'm pretty positive that "window" in the trunk isn't for viewing your cool high voltage wires. It's probably for emergencies. If it's in an accident. Firefighters can easily break that glass and unplug the high voltage connections to help prevent fires.
I doubt it. You don't just "unplug" high voltage connections. Also a lot of these wires were for other functions, rather than power supply. Probably just for looks

At 12:07 they talk about the High Voltage Shutdown and they show the wire you're supposed to cut in order to SHUT DOWN the high voltage system. Yes. The system still contains energy that can be discharged. It's just no longer connected to the source of that high voltage energy.

It's also a grenade. The Drive-E engine has an open deck design with thin cylinder walls running well over 30psi of boost.
Golden Grenadier well, no, if you add up the boost coming from the super charger and the turbo charger at the same time sure, but they don’t come on at the same time. The supercharger is only activated in lower rpms to negate turbo boost without limiting power. And new technology allows manufacturers to run high boost with thin walls

It was actually the three pointed seatbelt that was introduced in 1959. The two pointed belt was around before that. Volvo has been around since 1926 and was introduced as an affiliate to the Swedish ball bearing company SKF.

Volvo was always ahead of its time. My father has the s40 from 2006 and it still feels like its a modern sedan. Its design looks timeless and has features like hydraulic widows and doors but also you dont have to hold the trunk or port bagage with some metal sticks.
1959 is when volvo invented 3 point seatbelt, not when volvo was founded.
Which they also made open source so all manufacturers could use it.
The point is that it's a 10 month old brand but it's trying hard by putting "1959" in it. It's lame

Actually not the seatbelt, more specificly the threepoint seatbelt. It came as standard in the Volvo PV544 in 1959.

@@thomasholmes5515 It's just that Volvo has oftentimes marketed their heighened safety standards by mentioning that they were the first to introduce the 3 point seatbelts in mass produced cars. And indeed, they were the safest cars around in Europe.
In Germany, Volvos are colloquially called "Schwedenpanzer" ("Swedish tanks"), because they have the image of being safe, sturdy and durable like a tank.

That 1959 seatbelt detail: Doug didn't get one of the quirkiest features of the car: the complete absence of Volvo references EXCEPT for the one that reminds you that you got a car with Volvo's main quality.
It's like, "it's not a Volvo, it's not a Volvo, it's not a Volvo... but hey you DO get Volvo's excellence in safety engineering throughout this entire car".

First, the car is indeed beautiful. Second -'Since 1959' makes perfect sense, seeing as it could just refer to the fact that the first car with seat belts fitted as standard was released in 1959 - it just happens it was a Volvo.

As a Volvo owner (2015.5 S60) I've been watching the development of this car. It is absolutely gorgeous and if I had $150k I would pick it up without hesitation.

@@nobodynemoq Nils Bohlin invented the belt. Was first installed in a Volvo. Patent ran out in 1968 and was not renewed, so that every other maker could use it in their cars.

@@Nerdy_Biker Yes, but Polestar were used for the sporty versions of their normal cars, like the Volvo V40 Polestar. Kind of Civic Type R, Focus ST, Golf R and so on.

I've given up on watching the guy, I just really wanted to see this car, but I am yet again disappointed with the whole production.

You say starting out with a coupe is a mistake, I beg to differ. Every SUV looks the same and then it’ll be like “oh, well I could go to a different dealer and get the same thing for cheaper”. You have to be bold and unique. And while it goes against my hatred for electric vehicles, the Polestar 1 is a hybrid that I would be proud to own.
I couldn't agree more...SUV's are like family sized homes. I don't live in one, nor do I want one.

I have had push button start cars for years and years now and still despise that system, I like a key to turn, I can't even begin to count how many times I have gotten into my car and pushed the button to start it and realized I don't have the key on my and have to go back inside and get it. 🤬
There's a certain classic nostalgia to pushing a clutch in and turning a key. The future of electrics and automatics won't be able to replace that.
Like Saab, their key slot is down behind the gearstick.
I have a 2010 push start and I love it. I just leave the keys in my work bag and never need to take them out. The bags with me, the car opens and fires up

@@SERGIO-cr6uy Polestar is a performance/luxury brand of Volvo plus they use most of the interior from the Volvo XC 60 therfore is part of Volvo. But think Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Lincoln and Genesis use most parts from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford and Hyundai, Technically its still a Volvo

Geely owns Volvo and Volvo is under Volvo Car group, but they list Polestar as an affiliate....which they say is a non-consolidated independent joint venture company. Geely owns 50% of Polestar as does Volvo. So, not exactly like the others in your example.

I was sitting in the polestar 1 back in 2018 at the auto Salon in Geneva, Polestar is founded 2017 (as a stand alone Car Brand). But polestar is similar to AMG started as a cartuner and racing Team 2005...
Check out the Volvo S90 and you see Volvo as well outside of the Polestar 1
