    Have been teaching video games design for 10 years in the video games capital of the world and here a very honest reality check for people who want to start making video games :
    1# Learning 3d modeling software 2 to 3 years to become really good and to make assets in a reasonable time frame.
    2# Learning a major sculpting software 1 years to become good enough with it.
    3# 1 to 2 years learning texturing software and the basic of 2D graphic
    4# Learning C++ or C# coding language 2 to 3 years before you can start knowing how to do serious stuff.
    5# Drop any kind of social life if you want to make good progress in acquiring the above skills.
    6# A big + if you are living in your mother basement since you will need to eat and not worry about paying the rent.
    I know this will make many cry a river but at least you are being warned by someone who saw many broken dreams!

    I learned C++ at college and figured it'd be easier to pick UE4 because Unity uses C#, but after a few months of game programming in both engines I've realized Unity is definitely the best option for your first game engine, regardless of your programming knowledge (unless you're intending to use the blueprint feature in UE4). The simplicity of the engine and scripting makes it great for beginners, but in the long term I'll be looking to move over to UE4 due to the optimization possibilities of both the game engine and the programming language.

    • @TheSphynxoid

      C# is easy to learn (if you want) but on the other hand C++ Is harder

    • @thisisfun333
      @thisisfun333 5 лет назад

      Base on the type....
      i’m a good learner so C++ or C# is not that hard to learn and use.
      For me pure 2D game and less coding skill, we should you game maker studio ( believe me most of the tine just import sprite and drag is enough for a normal game), also the gms is not free anymore :(
      For 2d or 3d or hybrid, unity is better to use it since first it’s free. second, it ‘s easier to code.
      For go full power on 3d high quality, go with unreal.

    Thanks Sykoo - Liked. That's just what I wanted to hear. I've worked with a few game engines on a basic level, and some things are falling into place, but I've still got a way to go before I can feel more confident as a game developer. I know what I want to build, but knowing how to build it to completion is the challenge. I'm doing an online Unity course , but have recently started to focus on Gamemaker, to use the drag and drop coding to try and build another version of my proof of concept faster. It's coming along, but sometimes it does feel like 1 step forwards, 2 steps back. I'm determined to not let the bugs beat me, as this feels like my calling.
    It would be great to see more videos like this, as I'm very interested in becoming more competent as a game developer to bring my concepts to life, and hopefully, in time, turn it into a career.
    Thanks for your videos. Looking forward to your future content.
    Peace

    I'm a total noob but I started learning UE4 despite others saying the editor and specific systems like lightning, particles and wind, are difficult and complex. I'm thinking of building games in UE4, the models in Blender (also a noob) and the colors/textures in simple tifs made in Autodesk Sketchbook. Do you think I'm on the right track?

      I would suggest you using Unity because it is easier for a fresh developer to try create a game and the tutorial is easier to understand

    • @novacti5254
      @novacti5254 7 лет назад +7

      I personally tried both and I sticked with Unity. I am a rather fresh game developer and programmer and Unity fits my needs as of now. Easy to pick up interface, not so complicated programming language and such.

    • @phoenixdblack
      @phoenixdblack 7 лет назад +6

      Stick with UE4 if you really want to make 3D games, IMO the Interface and the coding is much clearer than in Unity. But I wouldn't recommend to start making gamesin 3D, so thats that.

    • @Legendarior
      @Legendarior 7 лет назад +11

      Stick with UE4, it has a lot more tools at your disposal, it is cheaper in the long run, open-source, good coding practices (Unity enforces bad practices like exposing public fields...)
      Also Unreal Engine's community is way more serious regarding development, than Unity's.
      Also looking the list of tools you are listing, I assume you are an artist, so you will have better time with UE4.

    Man I love your work, but you seem to use a lot of Unity default shaders and that's dragging your scenes behind the profesional quality standard (in my opinion), I don't know if this is only for your videos because you want them to be kind of newbie informative, but It would be amazing if you start using more precise PBR shaders to show of how your scenes would look at its full potential.

    As a ue4 user wich started with shallow knowledge I can say that the blueprint system really helped me with getting around understanding the system of game making and as a side part learning C++ on the side makes a real good compliment.
    But what I would say is a good thing with unity is that if you learn C# you can use that knowledge for other programming than just game developing.
    So both of these has their pros and cons

    Well... Blueprint is for sure easier to learn. But sometimes its ineffective. Many times i told myself, that with code i would make this and this in no time and with blueprints you sometimes have to go around which costs you performance. As well code gives you full control over your programming. You dont know how nodes are programmed, you dont know if they are optimized for what you want to do with them

    I started with unity and I am still learning.
    I got into coding and it's very entertaining for me!
    I don't get people that want to make games, but don't want to learn coding.
    Its like saying you want to eat without tasting it.
    Eventually you have to learn coding if you want to continue. Right?
    Better learn it sooner than later.
    And I think for someone starting to learn game development, he doesn't need something as powerful as unreal. Unity is simple, easy to get into, and there's plenty tutorials for both 2d and 3d.
    I am not an expert but I think unity is a great starting engine!
    Thanks for reading!

      Rohan Patel you can learn unity 3D straight from the unity website. check them at first. Then decide whether you want to learn from somewhere else too. Also do check the unity community. Many of the problems,can be solved as someone before you would also had the same problem. Hope that would help.

    • @Xameska

      You can learn a lot from the vast amount of unity tutorials on youtube, before deciding if you have an area in which you need more help with, but even then i would advise you do some reading about the course provider before you part with any cash.
      some have a bad rep for their so called "experts" selling other folks tutorials that they have gotten from youtube for free

    • @cetiah
      @cetiah 5 лет назад

      I know personally I learn better initially by following a prescribed course by professional teachers rather than trying to learn piecemeal through google and youtube. Udemy has been great for me, not just for the videos, but for other little features as well. Once I felt I had the foundations down, I was more comfortable researching on my own, choosing my own topics, and learning from different sources and perspectives. So at that point, youtube became a much more useful resource for me. I am starting to supplement that with podcasts and tech books.
      The most important thing is to pick a path and start running, not paralyzing yourself trying to pick the best path. You're going to do some course correction later anyway.
      I think if you are an *absolute* beginner (like I was not long ago), then finding an instructor you are reasonably comfortable with and a place where you feel safe asking questions is the most important thing. At that point, the content, language, engine, etc is not that important. Some people find that that in RUclips, some people find it in school, some people find it in forums. For me, it was an online course/community.

    im not really a game developer, but i do like to play around with ue4.
    its alright. havent tested unity to be able to give a comparison.
    from what ive seen so far, ue4 definitely has its complexity
    and the tutorials from the ue4 team are a good addition.
    my smaller concern so far with the blueprint system was the naming scheme of certain instructions, some are a bit unintuitively named, but its still a great way to avoid manual coding, which i just cant get in to.
    in my opinion absolutely worth to give it a try

    You forgot something crucial: you can also make game engine yourself. You will understand everything there perfectly, learn why things are like they are in best way, coding skills level-up +25, you start to respect desing choices in other game engines and more. Hardest part; you must realize making a game engine takes a long time, and most of them never get finished. Starting with simple games you need really simple game engines with only one while(running){} loop.

  • @Valcuda

    The first engine I ever made a game is called GDevelop, it got me to kind of experience what developing a game is like before I learned a coding language. Thanks to it, I am trying to learn GDSCRIPT so I can use Godot. So my tip is to start with GDevelop to see if game development is something you like, as you have to work hard to get things to work, but you don't have to code

    I can't really say I love one engine than another because it's based on features I like. I might like the realistic effect Cry Engine gives but I know I would struggle with it if I attempted a 2D game in it. Same thing goes for any other engine out therel. Since I'm more of a 2D person, I would say I'm liking the steady development of the Defold Engine. But I'm still using Unity for now

    I've read documentation and poked around with Unreal, but nothing else, so I don't really have "footing" for a solid opinion. But I like what I've seen with Unreal.

    When armoury engine for Blender comes out, I will immediantly swap to it from Unity.

      The new engines are going to be, EVEE and Clay engine.

      Armoury is not an official engine, one guy called Lubos Lenco is doing it open source. It looks amazing thats for sure, has good performace but still some bugs and mostly missing features.

      Yeah, I have looked at it a few times. It is very promising. Evee is gonna blow it's RT rendering away though.

    Good day, nice video, I want to make a game like Child or Light 2d turn based rpg game. What free game engine and character creation software do you recommend? thanks

    Tried using RPGmaker MV for an RPG, but after 100+ hours of use, I found that it doesn't handle mechanics that break the mold particularly well unless you find specialised plugins and install a boatload of them. I eventually got fed up and moved to Gamemaker, where I have to learn how to store masses of data myself as well as make a dialogue and menu system from the ground up. I'd recommend the RPGmaker engines if you don't really have an interest in breaking many traditions in the RPG genre and just want to tell a story or showcase your art.

    For architectural stuff I like CryEngine, the Voxel GI looks awesome and don't need to invest time in UVunwrapping lightmaps.

    • @TheDiamondGames
      @TheDiamondGames 7 лет назад

      There are also paid solutions for unity: SEGI. But the downside is that you have to pay for them.

      Maybe for personal work or hobby, but CryEngine's EULA prohibits the use of the engine for anything other than games, including architecture, which is one field they name specifically. I have no idea why they do this...but it's one of the main reasons I avoid using it.

    One Engine I recomened people start with is Valves Source engine. its easy to learn and although building maps in Hammer will take the while, but with the right lighting and textures, it will look nice. not pretty, but nice, and highly optimized.
    now starting with it is not easy. but after practice and some modding you can make some great games!

    I see a lot of open world creation in your videos, it´s very impressive. But what about creating an avatar, and interacting with the environment? Meaning, making sure you dont walk through walls, actually swim when you enter the water, or even push object you might not want permanently stationary?

    I can't decide between Unity and Unreal. I have basically no experience in the game designing world but I've watched hours of videos of information and advice. I am unable to choose which to use though because I have a lack of skill and knowledge. In the video, he said unity is easier to learn but what exactly makes it easier than unreal? I'm leaning a lot towards unreal but I'd like some feedback.

    I've used both Unity and UE for a little while, but I decided to stick with Unity because its editor runs better in my 4Gb RAM and slow HDD. So if system requirements are an issue for you, I recommend Unity even though I love UE.

    I think Unreal is my number one pick. I like the new additions like destructible environments Chaos and photo realism Quixel. Unreal 4 is now hands down the top pick for game development in my opinion. Games will never be the same.

    I wanna try unity and gamemaker and wanna make a 2d web game, so my friends can check it out. What languages do unity and gamemaker use? I would like to program instead of drag and drop. I feel that my game would be better if I coded it.

    What are the advantages and disadvantages of picking a game engine over a simple programming environment? I want to program a mobile game for android and ios with similar requirements like clash of clans or plants vs zombies. Basically a 2D game with 3D graphics. Furthermore I want to experiment with in app payment and multiplayer. I know, that I have to start simple, but I want to pick a game engine or programming language, that will suit this purpose in future (and also is free). So far I have little experience with small basic and the arduino programming language (similar to C++). I have also tried Java, but I have not done more than "hello world". I am very thankful for any help!

    I think that considering the game engine regarding the game genre you're gonna make is a pretty smart decision. I wouldn't want to use Unity for a shmup, I'd use Construct or Game maker instead.

  • @Giogiogio4

    Unreal is built upon by the industry. Its a tool that has been built up by many big studios and games. Those tools created get added to the engine. This in turn makes a better engine for gaming.
    Unity doesnt have that type of support. Things that come easier like lighting and rendering just look better in Unreal. The little things you have to go out of your way to do in Unity. it's nice to have that kind of support and workflow in an engine.
    That's why I picked UE. Spending too long in Unity to get the look I wanted because the tools just weren't there as they are in Unreal. With games like Kingdom Hearts 3 being done in UE hopefully that will bring even more to the engine.
