- A comparison video between Unity's and Unreal Engine's post-processing and graphics!
I also tried explaining why Unreal Engine has "better" graphics by default. I went into its standard image effects being added since the creation of a level, and explained further why Unity does not look as good at start.
Don't forget to let us know what YOU think and feel about this topic! Do you think Unreal Engine has beautiful image effects? Do you think Unity will be able to take over UE4 with its post-processing stack in 5.6?
I hope you guys enjoy!

What plugins and content packs are you using in unreal engine? All content packs i find costs as much as much as my car
and what specs does your computer have?
One of them, for the buildings and statues was Infinity Blade: Grasslands, which is free
Source SDK BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this video was a very god comparison. I have very little experience with Unity, but from what I hear Unity has an easier time rendering certain things like foliage (plants), but that's probably due to some of the things you discussed in this video.
the lack of built in post processing in unity is probably the reason we see more artistic styles in unity and more realistic styles in unreal.
unity 4 had no past processing at all? that's rough.
Just want to mention that with 5.x they are free...
i didn't say you couldn't do it in unreal, but i think having no post processing in the first place encourages stylized visuals, while UE4 ships with decent realistic visuals that you don't even have to tweak in some cases.
i just based my argument on what i see coming from those engines, UE4 has games like ark, paragon, pubg, gears of war, mostly realistic looking games, rarely games like abzu.
Unity has ori and the blind forest, inside, beyond eyes, enter the gungeon, firewatch, and many more stylized games, i guess cities skylines is one of the few realistic looking games that would come to my mind.
so either Unity attracts more devs who want to create stylized games or it encourages them to do so somehow.
Unity engine had PPFX since 2.x series in Unity Pro license. Unity made all of the engine free in Unity 5.x upwards; and now they are providing a one-pass multi effect solution thats actually a cinematic-quality AAA stack since 5.6.
I met a Unity developer at GDC 2017 who said that anyone making a game in Unity should script their own shaders to give your game a better look.
Any serious developer who wants to make this for a living should learn how to code shaders.
sdfsdfs13 yup... even then some games don't reaaaally need it but it's definetely something you need to learn if you are serious about the way you approach your games
Just like you should make your own materials in UE4.
Aidiakapi Materials are basically shaders, except Unreal likes to call them Materials. The equivalent of Materials (the ones in Unity) in Unreal is a Material instance.
OpenGL actually still calls those programs (shaders in Unity, and materials in Unreal) shaders, like in Unity. And a material is called a "shader program". It's like every engine/library uses their own name. :P
Yes, I kinda cringe with some games where they just add the default shaders and everything goes slow if you just enable them in the settings and doesn't look as polished. I am used to code OpenGL and glsl shaders for hobby projects, but a bit of Unity at my previous job, which I find it kinda cool but always tried to do some things myself, and there are issues with performance and rendering that are better solved if you circumvent what is already there. Now, these ready made engines makes some developers happy, just using the default stuff and not taking care of issues, scrap some physics and goat simulator like thing and you made a game.
Would really like to see a comparison video using the same assets in both engines.
I hoped this one is that video, clickbait :(
ylham eresov I do have both installed if someone can supply the assets. My PC is an aging beast so it'd be good for testing how well both engines handle "lower end" machines.
Just use some free assets?
Agreed. The biggest difference I was seeing in the videos was nothing to do with the achievable quality of the engines, but just that in UE4 he was placing some really really nice assets and in Unity the assets he was using weren't all that great. Some fair points on anti-aliasing etc, but it comes across as incredibly biased overall. Just look at the tech demos like the blacksmith or adam and you can see much better assets in use.
Burak Baggins tend to agree with that. The major issue being that most free assets aren't good and wouldn't bottleneck either engines. Also getting free assets is one thing, placing them all into game world exactly the same for both engines is still time consuming. I'd do it myself but I'm really not that worried.
Unreal and Unity both have "Un" and if we remove it, they become "real" and "Ity", and you mix them together it turns into "Reality"
U stoel
The one you made for unity looked like a scene for The Last Of Us.

There are worse fates than death. And his profile picture is one of them - Totally not ripped from MKX
Ew a child
I too only use Unity, but I still don't like the grass and wind in Unity at least compare UE4
To be honest, the terrain system in unity is pretty bad. I would love to see a new terrain there!
However I like the rest of Unity - specifically that you can write your shaders with code an not with nodes - I don't know I cannot get used to node based coding.
And what is great as well is that you can create your own global light and shadow models. There is an asset in the asset store which gives you pcss shadows for example.
Der Nox you can program your own shaders in unreal without blue prints though.. They have documentation for it on their website.
YOU WANT GRASS, USE CryENGINE
Yeah Cry Engine looks positively gorgeous compared to both these, but I'll be damned if I have any clue how the hell to do even the most basic things in Cry.
Argonwolfproject well to me I get really close CRY for doing basic stuff in CRY-Engine
Unreal has better graphics than Unity. Unfortunately I think it is not that easy to "just make Unity look as good as Unreal". I mean the entire Unreal 4 engine has been built from ground up around the idea of making the most amazing, best looking real time rendering engine. This is what Unreal did in the past when it was still competing with Quake 3 engine, this is what they have 2 decades of experience doing: amazing looking real time render engines.
Unity on the other hand was created with the idea of "democratization" of game development. They build an engine that is easy to use, if you know a bit of code. The focus was for it to be extremely flexible and generic (the code), making easy to develop any sort of game.
This is why Unity will NOT get toe-to-toe with Unreal. Because Unreal was built ground up for doing what it does best: amazing graphics.
With that said, I think Unity will remain as the most popular game engine. Why? Because it easy to use, it is easy to get full functional games done. And this is what matters for 95% of indie developers. "What good is the graphics for if I can't get a game done on it?" But Unreal will remain being the preferred engine for mid-to-large size companies, because of the superior visual quality.
Well the problem is that Unity tried to make 1 gigantic renderer that work on 30+ platforms that they support. Turns out that giant renderer is hard to maintain, hard to add features, and give only average look at average performance.
They are changing their monolithic renderer into a data-driven one (called Scriptable Render Loop) where they can make a special renderer per platform i.e. one for high end pc, one for mobile, one for VR. This approach is similar to how EA works with their Frostbite game engine. Unreal also have 3 renderers (defer for high-end pc/console, tiled-forward for VR, and plain forward for low-end mobile). I hope they can make the transition, but who really knows they set big plans in the past and didn't deliver. Nested prefab and terrain system comes to mind.
sdfsdfs13 I think one thing that helps is that Epic is making Paragon and when they need some feature added for better performance, more realistic animation, better particles, etc, etc they make it and add it to the engine. They are currently developing a high end AAA photorealistic game and updating the engine with the fixes that not only the community needs but they need to make their game as well.
UE4 has the better render engine out of all 3 engines you listed. It depends on the developer to make the graphics look cartoony or meaty, not the engine.
But Unreal 3 and and 4 are the most-used engines professionally (by far), and professionals are willing to spend far more money on making solid products than indie devs, so Unity will never compete with that.
Nick not to mention UE4’s render engine is far superior to every other engine.
I could just sit and watch a level build video... all day. This is amazing mate, amazing job! Subbed for future content.
In UE4 graphics are not a problem at all neither they are in unity. But in unity, as you said, you need to implement more time in them. I personally like both engines but I think that, in terms of graphics, UE4 does a better job. I am not saying that unity's graphics are sh!t or something like that. I just think that you don't have to deal with the graphics in UE4 that much as you need in unity.
Ponyyish lol
Ponyyish Bullshit, you should have some arguments
Ponyyish Thats an argument
Maybe, Unity Team want ppl to buy asset for those already built-in effects of UE4.
Sorry I'm Late Everything is possible. but I doubt
If you are a complete beginner to game development then post-processing is the least of your worries. Just go with Unity and learn how to make functional game play first. Programming is much easier in Unity and there are plenty of good tutorials online. You're not going to make GTA 6 as your first game anyway, so the slightly better graphics in UE shouldn't be a deciding factor.
Rebale thanx
Rebale their are better tutorials for unreal engine and better community, like most of the unity community out there are 12 year old making either slenderman rip offs or shitty games with roblox graphics and models. Anyway, unreal is the biggest engine of all time, making hits like ark survival and other shit that I can't remember cause it's 5 am
There are many bad games made with Unity, because it's so easy to use that anyone can make something with it. Unity is also much more popular than Unreal. Games like Rust, Kerbal Space Program and Subnautica are made with Unity. Professional teams can make good games with either engine. Anyway, for beginners, Unity is much easier in my opinion.
Dino looks like you didnt know anything about game development, i quit unreal engine just in 2 weeks. for me graphics in unreal doesnt matter but the coding is the BIG PROBLEM. also there are COUNTABLE unreal engine tutorial out there and they didnt even teach you what this function does what this variable does. Unreal engine coding documentary it self just like a shit and mess up, looks like unreal engine developer it self get confused by unreal engine coding API, is it what you call DECENT PROGRAM? Unreal engine has VERRY VERY SMALL COMMUNITY AND COUNTABLE TUTORIALS, why?? BECAUSE THE DEVELOPER IT SELF GET CONFUSED BY ITS PROGRAM, in other side unity has LARGE COMMUNITY, TONS OF TUTORIALS, AND GREAT CODING DOCUMENTARY which you can UNDERSTAND WITHOUT RUclips TUTORIALS. Assasin creed made with unity, dead trigger 2 made with unity and its highly optimized.
sounds like you're the one who knows nothing about game dev
Thank for the video been waiting so long for this video :)
Your design vision is beautiful! Respect man, keep up the good work, loved that project you worked on here!
From a non-developers viewpoint the unreal engine seems more appealing visually
Unity is easier and faster to work with from beginners viewpoint.
Sebastián Svoboda Why? you have blueprints in UE and a lot of features that sure you can also get in Unity but looks more accessible in UE.
i don't even know why this fool is comparing unity with unreal. its like comparing a ferrari with a camry. unity was made to purposefully be compatible with all sorts of mobile devices while unreal is an engine designed to push the top of the line computers.
GreenBastardmint noob comment
just like you
Would be neat to see an updated version of this with focus on Unity 2019 and whatever version Unreal is on.
of course i get a unity ad before watching this XD

Thank you for your kindness, my man!
it would be nice if you had video showing what you were talking about. rather than just blabbing over the top of your old random content.
Yep. plus there's no comparison...UE4 wins easy. Unity can achieve near UE4 graphics but it still hasn't surpassed it yet. I've been using Unity for 5 years as well, so I'm not talking crap about it. I hate all of the comparison videos of Unity because depending on the outcome it gives Unity a worse name than it already has.
the best comment yet-
My major concern is that all Unity games seem to run really poorly. I'll be playing Unreal engine games far more demanding that run super smooth with all settings high, Unity makes all the pcs I've had over the last four years feel like low spec laptops.
Nich Hustler You should try Ori and the Blind Forest
(Unless you're talking only of lifelike games)
+atomatopia1 that game is my absolute jam. Pure perfection in gaming. And they just announced the sequel at E3.
It also ran like a dream. I've actually played a few 2D Unity games that run fantastically. It seems to just be the 3D that developers don't seem to understand well enough to make it run well.
I didn't understand much of this, but I loved to watch you design each level. It looks incredible.
I hope your channel will keep growing!
Man make some tutorials on how to build like that, that is truly amazing...
They are actually working at redefining rendering from the blank slate. They will have a new renderer called Scriptable Render Pipeline. It will be open source (so everyone would improve it), will have some very good features from the start (fast, scattering model, SSS, proper GGX, volumetric and polygonal lighting and many more) and will have it's own material editor later (github commits heavily suggest about it). And this project is led by a graphics engineer who also worked on graphics in Frostbite 3. So, bright future ahead, eh?
UE4 or unity? I have no idea what you're referring to sorry.
Insurgentgaming Unity, of course
Pechka Productions sounds great
Pechka Productions unity has more funds in the end it will supress unreal. there was no need to it in mobile games so they didnt bother but now they target VR
No it doesn't....they're both well over $1 billion, and it will never surpass Unreal simply because professionals and AAA devs will never use Unity
Video game map design is my dream job :) Great video really enjoyed it. Keep it up!
With a recent ambition in computer design, especially on a 3D scale, I'm really glad this channel was recommended to me. I'll keep tuned in for further videos.

How can you say Unity cant do certain post processing effects, when you depend on the asset store? How about writing the post processing effect yourself? Unity now exposes the command buffer to do ANY effect you want. Only your ability is getting in the way.
I would say this about most differences between Unity and Unreal. Usability are the main differences, not the actual ability to do something in them.
ppl don't wanna L2program
Dragaan they shouldn't even start trying to make a game then
Proof for those numbers? Although I do agree. I'd say near 30-40% of the people using Unity just make asset flips instead of real games.
+Whiteleaf Arts The Asset Store is mostly to blame for these terrible Asset Flips.
I still use only Unity default stuff or otherwise custom built stuff for my games.
Assets for graphics and Audio are the only real difficulty for me personally but what makes me really rage inside is just how many pepple don't want to learn basic programming.
I'd say half of the games made on Unity are made by people who probably don't even know what a "float" is and will outright refuse to learn.
My games are on my NimsoNy channel for anyone interested!

Good video. How about making a series on design. I'd love to see how you organize your assets and decide which ones to use on a project. If you have an asset pack out there perhaps use that in the series I would definitely go buy it so that I could follow the series. I would be more interested in Unity but I'm sure a series on both would find a lot of interest.
Since I'm a huge realistic graphics fanboy, i guess Unreal engine for me
Ferry Ansony I'm a sucker for really good lighting, so I'd probably go Unreal as well
Well, you can get the looks with Unity, you just need to put in much more work adjusting everything.
Ferry Ansony for any type of graphics Unreal is superior.

Comparasing without comparasing
I'm very new to game development and both have been great. I think it's a matter of what you're creating. Despite Unreal having much more features and better graphics, Unity does the job and that's what counts. Don't choose what's "better", choose what's better for the job you're doing right now.
Kansai Ben
UE4 is much, much more flexible than Unity. Unity isn't a bad engine by any means but UE4 can do a lot more due to using C++, which is a much more powerful language than C#. Unity needs to step up its game to catch up, it can't hinge its success on being free anymore.
What do you mean with more powerful than C#?
Except for low-level programming (like drivers and microcontroller code) C# can do anything that C++ can. It might be a bit slower here and there, but the code would be done faster because, generally, C# is easier to use.
Oh, and there's reflection. I love reflection. But C++ is having none of that (for valid reasons).
+Geoxion
The slowness is exactly why C# is less capable, because it bogs down the product. It's why Unity games are harder to optimize than UE4 games, and Unity also really doesn't like multiplayer at all, there's always netcode issues when a game is using Unity. Unreal does not have that issue since it was originally designed for an arena shooter, where good netcode is absolutely critical. But the main issue I have with Unity is how difficult it is to optimize, many of the Unity games I've seen or played had performance issues while only a couple UE4 games did.
Again, I'm not saying Unity is a bad engine, but to say it can keep up with UE4 is just false. It has to go through a lot of work to catch up.
+KalDragon You should also take into account that most starters/noobs/amateurs use Unity. They won't know how to make a stable perfomant game in any engine.
The netcode... Same thing really. There's nothing to prevent you from writing good netcode. It's just that standard implementations of it get (ab)used a lot.
I'm an admin on a (mainly) unity forum with a lot of starters. From what I can see, it's not the implementation that's at fault, but the knowledge of the users.
C# performance is worse on average indeed. But the engine is made in C++. So all rendering is/could be as fast as UE's.
I don't have enough experience to say that UE's tools are generally better or not though.
+Geoxion
I've used both fairly extensively and UE's tools are quite a bit better, and you also get every tool for free. UE4 and Unity are pretty much tied on documentation, though, both have extremely extensive documentation that's easily navigated. From my experience, UE4 is the superior engine, but isn't quite as easy to learn as Unity which is why many go after Unity. My stance, however, is that since many end up switching to Unreal anyway once they hit the roadblocks of Unity it would be better to just deal with Unreal's greater learning curve and not have to switch in the first place. Of course that's just my opinion, had I started when UE4 was around I'd have probably still gone for Unity since, well, the mindset of a newbie is to use the option that's easier to learn.
This is a great video, totally unbiased and helpful. You mentioned in the video that you would link to the post processing effects (some paid for, not just the standard post processing stack for Unity) in the description but I can't see them? Would love to see the ones you found useful.
Very cool video! I Subecribed! I have bought some video game making courses for Unity I think. I hope I get some Unreal Engine too after hearing your thoughts. Big Crazy Like ;-) You sure got a lot of views on this video ;-)

Bit of a late reply but the reason they don't use it is because the lack the tutorials and learning materials in general and some of the workflow is a bit weird to work with from someone that worked with UE4 and Unity. I've tried working with CryEngine a few times but returned to UE4 due to the lack of tutorials and learning material.

For anyone new to game development; dont be discouraged to stop using unity because of this video. While unity lacks good graphical quality and lighting/post-processing effect, its far easier to learn and much more user friendly than unreal. Unreal is not an engine designed for new comers in the world of game development. I recommend you learn C# coding in unity and how to make great games there before moving onto unreal. Or not at all, Unity is a great engine and you can make some amazing games with it. For example: Firewatch, The Forest, Ori and the Blind Forest; All those games were made on the unity engine.
UE
Great video! But what packs do you use for the ruins/vines/grass/trees in unreal engine?
Hey im new great video keep up the work
Everyone:Unreal and Unity
CryEngine users TR!GGERED
That engine sucks
Or make your own engine
CrackedDylMil not everyone knows how to do that.
Because writing your own well optimized engine is really cost efficient, right?
Unless you're a major AAA studio writing you're own engine is usually a bad idea.
Have you ever written a basic shader or a physics engine? Most likely you haven't, good luck learning linear algebra, C++, physics and lots more.
hylke45 Yeah I've written a couple engines (OpenGL. Runs great on nvidia cards but it's pretty bad on AMD because their opengl support is awful) it's not near as hard as you think. It's actually really easy if you have the time
Ah yeah that's writing a shader. I've been working on some physics engine lately and perhaps it's that linear algebra isn't my strong point but it can be quite difficult. (it's also fun to try to write a ray tracer with specular lighting while you're at it with linear algebra)
What's a good place to start learning about that? I am very interested!
Very nice, what asset packages are you using in UE4, I like the look of them.
what assests was he using for the castle scene??? cant find it anywhere in the store

I really liked the video... the info was good and based on your own experience.
The outro was a little loud though.
something you didnt mention is that unity is also very much less intensive than unreal , i know this personally because i tried both and unreal kept crashing on my pc due to it just not being strong enough
That doesn't mean that the game is more demanding though. Just the tools are.
That's true , he just failed to mention it
Unity is just as intensive if you use the same quality assets with the same effects. Just turn the graphics settings down in Unreal if your PC can't handle it
Nick that is not the point. The stock settings should be set as low as possible but be highly scalable regardless of the engine , I know how unreal works I still use it at times and yes I did have to turn them down however I should not have had too
no it isn't. i had a older pc that could not run any unreal games well. i ran unity games easier. Personally unity a faster engine then unreal.
I've been a PC gamer for over 27 years and have a degree in C++ and i say go Unreal :P
As a software engineer with specialization in game development. It firstly depends on what you're making, with what kind of team you're making it.
There's also a reason indie game studios use Unity more than UE.
But yeah it really once again depends on what you're making and the composition and size of the team you're doing it with.
What is the reason indie developers are choosing Unity?
Noobs.
You have a degree in C++... Really? is that so? They give out degrees for specific coding languages now? Please do explain, i would love to drop my Software Engineering degree for something far more... fake.
+Nich Hustler
Easier to get into and make a finished product.
Tools which work well for small teams, bigger community and more help with it.
Asset store contains a lot more than Unreal variant and if you know what you're looking for you can get good thing for a low price (like some things could cost your team let's say 16h of worktime, or you can just buy it from asset store for $99. Trust me buying is a lot cheaper)
Unity also leads in mobile games.
There's abundant reasons to choose Unity for a small team and lots of reasons why not to choose it in specific cases.
Just like Unreal has a lot going for it in AAA productions, but not limited to that and also not always the right choice.

*Highkey 90% of the video really just him showing off his copy and pasting premade assets capabilities*
it's not a comparison of Blender vs. Maya, it's about game engines. No one makes assets in the game engines themselves, unless you're a professional time-waster.
*MANCHESTER UNITY vs UNREAL MADRID*
Hell yaaah!!!
I find it amazing that the engines are relatively simple to use these days for level creation yet you still see asset flippers and stuff like that on steam.
Hi. I am a total beginner and just started using C# in Unity and then look at the asset prices😒 and started to look in to unreal engine.
which do you suggest i go with? Also I love your videos!
I agree with unity, Because you don't wanna have everyone get into unity gets a ready template of a game which takes everyone to publish a default project hihihih, Well, this is life ,you need to do everything by yourself :O
yeah i agree, the day green light became a thing i got less and less interested to look through the steam store.
binary lol :D
yap that's how AAA studios make there games start from bare metal up to a functioning game :D

Wow, great video mate. You know where you got the UE4 static meshes from?
What engine was the caste ruin thing made on?
Given that unity runs like garbage then Unreal ftw.
Yelroc UE can run like garbage as well. Depends what you try to do with it.
If you don't want to optimize your game then don't use Unity. It already does enough for you.
If you spend an equal amount of time optimizing for each, would Unity perform better than Unreal? If it does then okay, if it doesn't then my point still stands.
Yelroc It depend on how optimized the engine is, I will be honest and say unreal is probably more optimized than unity. But if you had the exact same graphics, same models, scripts everything they'd probably preform nearly identical. Unreal probably slightly pulling ahead as the engines intention is graphics so its probably more optimized to handle better looking things.
Wow gz on 500k+ views :D
my laptop have i5 3rd generation...Intel HD graphics 4000...can I work with this graphic card...??
