Sykoo you forgot to add the price-tables to your description.
You could also maybe show some tables as overlay over your level design footage and maybe show footage of the engine your talking about while you talk about it to clear out confusion that might occur. ( I know thats much work, so I can totally understand why you don't done that - but in a comparison video it might makes sense to let the video look more professional - because you reach more people beyond you subscribers with these videos.)
Anyways, you commentary is great and I enjoy hearing it - I just can't always see the connection between your footage and your commentary.

    Hi, great comparisons!
As you said all engines have their pros and cons.
I personally put my hands more on Unity in the future, since they completely replace the Rendering pipeline in this year.
What hopefully lets you achieve the same stunning and highly professional results you can have with UE with alot of freedom how the things can look. :)

cool video, i have used both unity and UE4 and spent a fair bit of time in both to get a feel for them before settling on one for my future dev projects, ultimately I chose UE4, and these are my reasons :-
Visual coding and Blueprints - coming from an amateur C++ coding background I found it easy to be able to bring some of my existing code into UE4. I also found the whole blueprint system quite accessible and allows me to quickly develop things like input controls and events, seamlessly design and implement game play rules, manage animations and game play state changes etc.
Project Presets - the project presets give a great way to quickly test and idea and work out how if it can be quickly implemented. It saves a lot of monotonous coding and allows for the basics to be expanded quickly.
Importing external resources (3D objects, textures etc) I found it basically completely a seamless and very intuitive process in UE4. This was something I personally struggled with initially in unity.
For me C++ vs C#, I did not want to learn yet another language.
The quality of the available 3rd party assets, honestly, there are a lot of assets available for free on the untiy store, some of them are very good, but so many are either not so good or just completely unusable. Yes the unity store has more assets, but the quality of the assets I have seen on the UE4 store seriously do make quality over quantity an important choice to consider.
Financially I would be better off with unity I guess due to not having to pay royalties until I hit 100K in sales, that said, I would be happy to be paying 5% royalties after hitting 3K in sales...
GoDot recently come to my attention as a new engine to look at before I invest further into UE4, but to be honest I am really getting comfortable with UE4 now and do not like the prospect if learning another engine and another scripting language (GDScript) even though it might be more powerful in that you can script in new plugins for the actual editor...
For me I just want to use the engine to make my game ideas come to life, and to that end, UE4 does it for me...
I also own ledwerks and another engine, they were not up to scratch for the type of games I like to make nor for my 'master scope' game that hopefully my lesser games will fund in the future :)
I guess it comes down to what you are comfortable with using, there is no best nor worst really, they mostly all are just as capable as each other just in different ways

Super helpful video! I've been thinking about trying my hands at making a video game for a while. I've dabbled with the Source Engine (Valve Hammer Editor) a lot in the past and I love the idea of creating a world. As for what engine I'll try out? Definitely UE4. The asset store along with blueprints makes it a really compelling option for someone like me.

I have only been using Unity3D and Game Maker Studio 1. I gotta say, I will to stick to Unity for my 2018's project because of the simplicity (like you said in this video). I really want to try out UE4 in the near future though.
Have you ever tried making VR games? Which engine is suited for VR development?

That's very interesting. I'm just about to deicde which engine to use in the future. I develop simulations for example historical buildings (e.g. Versailles Castle), or complex factory facilities. I find UE4 better than Unity in the optical features. I'm desperate, however, as the workflow is the best with UE4. I need to put each walls as a separate object in a library? Or can i build whole rooms? What would be your advice, what is the best workflow for UE4? As an object editor I use Blender.
Thank's for your answer in advance.

Worked with UE4, Unity and Godot for prototypes and pre-production. The only one I didn't quite like as much was Unity; it felt too 'fragmented' to me, where you'd start relying on the asset store to do things.
Godot was great for 2D, easy to pick up, and GDscript is great. I haven't tried it much for 3D though, and they completely revamped the 3D renderer since last time I used it. They seem to be doing great progress, so I can recommend to at least check it out. The fact that it's MIT licensed and free is insane and incredible.
Unreal was excellent and felt like the most professional one, and I'd love to work with it again someday. I felt it was quite easy to make things look great, and Blueprint was really cool for getting things to work. Haven't done much coding in it yet though.
I echo the sentiment that you should just try things out and see which fits you best.

I'm Going for Godot... How good is the visual scripting on Godot For 2D Games?

    • @Maxatal
      @Maxatal 5 лет назад

Laissez - faire If by visual scripting you mean scripting in general or scripting that changes the game’s visuals, both answers are very good, maybe even better than Unity. GDscript is a branch-off of Python so it’s extremely easy to grasp and use. The 2D also has a pretty small learning curve in terms of GUI and creating. So it is easy, efficient, and a tad bit underpowered. Nonetheless I would recommend it.

    - good performance

      Kepusz Hi Kepusz
Sadly I can't answer your question regarding programming since I'm an artist only. However (from what I've heard) C# isn't as matured as C++ (C++ is currently more powerful).
My advice would simply be to test it out (since it's free).

Ok so I have watched many of your vids on all the engines and many other ppls vids and there is always one thing that I am looking for info on but can never find. And that's the art style of graphics and not just graphics. I have gathered the info I need on the diff engines but I need info on non realism graphics in the engines. Ppl are always making games in their vids with graphics resembling skyrim but what if I want to make a 3d game with art styles like doubtless or sea of thieves? What are the diff engines capabilities in that aspect. Same goes w 2d. What if I don't want a game resembling metroid or Mario but I want art like cuphead or orI?

Use whatever engine is useful for you. If your making a beautiful scenery based realistic fps game, use UE4 or CryEngine. If your making a low poly simplistic graphic looking game that randomly generates meshes, use Unity. These are examples btw. Every engine for its own type of game.

I recomend GameMaker Studio 2 for beginners. Yes, it's 2D mainly. But. Coding is simple and it's no so overwhelming for beginners.
As for Godot - try version 3.0. It's in beta, but 2.4 is techicaly outdated now. It have visual scripting, 2D engine with good features and 3D engine with PBR rendering.

    • @tecosv6927

Yes, I'm actually using godot, the 3.0 version is now available to download it, the engine has support of three languajes, GDscript, C# and visual script, also c++ but other languajes need other process to use it, godot has a node to almost everything you need, so I guess that a complete begginer can use it, obviously, will need to read the documentation or view some tutorial to learn use it, but that's normal with any engine you use

Unreal is POWERful, but very hard to learn and wrap your head around, but once you got it, it'll be awesome.

Hey so I could use some advice because I'm brand new to this topic. I intend to start a game but being that I have close to no knowledge in coding or the sort, I don't actually know what engine would go best with it (I don't care about the graphic level atm) or which coding language to go with. I won't give long term mechanics, but the game is pretty much an open world kaiju game where you pick a species or customize your own, and pretty much live as a kaiju. The maps would be small countries, big cities or a continent (for example, Australia) or island (for example, Britain). Or, at some point, a map of the entire world.
Any ideas anyone? I'm willing to learn but have no knowledge on anything haha.

The engine I'd like to work with (read: the engine I'd like to see more community content on) is Leadwerks. It feels like the Paint(dot)NET of game engines. That happy middleground between MS Paint and Photoshop/GIMP.

The Badger Squad , yeah, Star Citizen is not relevant at all...

The Badger Squad, well, you should know Lumberyard is still in beta stage, and it takes more than a year or two to develop something "relevant", so you will have to wait a little bit xD

Amazon doesn't even make good tech demos for it though....They took CryEngine only to make demos that look worse than Unity's.

Lumberyard is literally Amazon taking unity's source code and adding features.

I wish I could use CryEngine, because of all the free assets and good graphics, but none of the materialls work and I can't add materials to terrain for some reason.

i pushed and tried to adapt to unity but its so overwhelming you got to know so many things for the simplest of stuff and google is just a mess filled with technical words feel discouraged with unity tbh

When did they get rid of the huge $500 price tag for basic unity? I might actually try it out now, though I think i might still just stick with EU4

I really like Unity and that is what I have been investing my time in. What is the deal breaker for me is the horribly slow and in-accurate light generation. You can set the lighting to how you like it, after a ridiculously long render, everything is darker than previously set. Doing research the lighting generation only uses CPU and not GPU. I purchased a sweet gaming rig which I thought would cut down rendering time but they were the same as my 2013 MacBook. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. It's a shame as I've purchased a lot from the asset store but maybe I can use them in my next Middleware. I'm thinking of CryEngine as I'm a graphics snob. Although I think mobile development is the future of gaming. Which brings one back to unity due to it's device compatibility. Thanks for the great info everyone!
